Absolutely fabulous - food, staff and playlist were equally brilliant. Best Salmon and chorizo combo I’ve had EVER!!! Stopped by on way home from weekend in Pickering and couldn’t have chosen better🙂

Amazing evening meal. I had Brie for starter which was nicely presented and generous portion. For main, I chose off the special menu and had the belly pork which was cooked to perfection with crispy crackling, delicious dauphinoise potatoes and a smoky bean accompaniment! We were staying nearby and had been recommended The White Horse and it didn’t disappoint ! The steak pie was equally delicious according to my dad! The food although generous was perfect 💗 Attentive, friendly staff! 100% recommend and will be back when next in the area !

What an absolute gem of a country inn and cannot recommend highly enough. Just returned from a 2 night stay and have nothing but positives to say about our stay. From start to finish- welcoming staff, gorgeous clean room, fabulous food (generous portions- steak and ale pie beautiful, crammed full) and plentiful breakfast (full English and smoked salmon with scrambled eggs so tasty). Love the little tasteful snug area upstairs for residents where you can relax and have a drink away from the bar. Unfortunately, we didn’t make use of the outdoor bar area but looks lovely. Very dog friendly. Competitive price for our stay compared to others. Beautiful surroundings. We can’t wait to hopefully stay again next year. Ps recommend booking for food as only pub in the village and they were turning people away. Thank you to all staff for a wonderful stay.

The best that I can write about this pub is that it is okay. The staff were welcoming and friendly. However the food offer was disappointing and underwhelming overall. Some elements in the main for example were good, I had a pork belly which was a 'daily special' and that was nice and my wife had the scampi which she ate. The pub does not do chips but offers potato wedges (which it describes as hand cut chips). My wife had these and they arrived overcooked and soggy. She ate some but left most of them. I had dauphinoise potatoes with my dish and they were edible, that's the best I can write. My dish had baked beans in a tomato sauce which was watery and flavourless. The starters were enjoyable; we had pate (they were clearly low on bread and included a sausage roll to make up for it) our friends Doreen's black pudding (I think that's right - it was a special) which they said had an odd taste but they ate it. My wife had a caramel ice cream and cookie dough dessert which she liked. I didn't have a dessert. The portions were good; none of us felt cheated in this respect but overall we were not impressed with the quality of the offer, which we all agreed was immemorable. The pub is about half an hour from where we live but we experienced nothing to make us want to come back.

We live in close proximity to Ampleforth and the White Horse has become our regular local go-to since its recent takeover and refurb (by the couple who also run the delightful Blacksmith Arms in Lastingham). Prior to their tenure it was a run of the mill drinking pub, not renowned for food. That is no longer the case and we’ve had several really enjoyable dinners and Sunday lunches, I’d describe the menu as elevated pub grub, or, I guess ‘gastropub’. It retains a lovely rustic, country inn design and feel, with a few welcome tweaks of gentrification. (Though the loos still await a posh up). The layout is a handful of super cosy rooms, very convivial, alongside a teeny area of outdoor tables overlooking the rear car park. The welcome is warm and the young team sweet and obliging. We’ve taken a succession of friends, all of whom have really enjoyed both the food and ambience. The prices are right, and it’s just great to have on our doorstep. My only criticism is that wines, by the glass in particular, could be better.

Booked dinner and overnight stay here, as we were going to visit Castle Howard. We received a warm welcome from Albert the barman and we were shown to our rooms, which were cosy, spotlessly clean and had lots of nice touches. We had dinner there that night and met John our host. Food was excellent, drinks were reasonably priced and the inn just has a great atmosphere filled with lots of locals. After a very comfortable night, we then enjoyed a fantastic breakfast before we headed off. Would absolutely recommended here for a stay, food and drinks and we hope to return again.

Stayed at the White Horse Inn with my wife on the eve of the Yorkshire Marathon. Amazing little Coutry Inn situated in a very picturesque location. Hosts were fantastic, and the room was perfect. Probably the most comfortable bed I've slept in away from home and the pub downstairs was very welcoming. We both enjoyed chatting to the friendly locals whilst tucking into our evening meal in front of a roaring fire. With a very early start planned on Sunday morning, I wasn't expecting breakfast, but the hosts opened the kitchen early especially for us, which was much apprecieted. I then went on to smash a new Marathon PB, fuelled on poached eggs, toast and coffee. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a warm Yorkshire hospitality, tasty food and drink, and a comfortable night's sleep.

What a fabulous, friendly, cosy little Inn the White Horse is! No 'gastro pub' makeover here thankfully- and all the better it is for it too. Nice and original, with a crackling coal fire burning in the old grate on a cold Yorkshire night. Lovely local beer - Howardian Gold - and the food was really something special. I understand they have a new young chef - who should be very proud. We had dinner here twice in one week ... absolutely delicious fresh chicken liver pate with a superbly well dressed side salad, the perfect steak and ale pie with shortcrust pastry and real gravy - and fish and chips cooked to perfection... the crispest batter, well seasoned mushy peas as they should be, with home made tartare sauce too, no sachets here, yay! Believe me, this is some of the best 'pub' food I have ever had - in fact, I have had countless Michelin star meals over the years that haven't impressed me as much! Last but not least, we were warmly welcomed by John the owner (a genuinely lovley man!) and his team too - I felt very at home here, and I sincerely wish this place every success - it deserves it.

Booked two rooms for ourselves and daughter plus granddaughter whilst visiting Ampleforth College. Albert, the barman, greeted us and was extremely friendly and helpful. Both our rooms were beautifully presented with comfortable, clean bedding and towels. Complimentary water and home made biscuits plus milk in the fridge were very welcome. The usual pie night was unavailable owing to a family funeral however a table was booked for us at the other village pub, two minutes walk away. (Separate review). After a very restful night we had the opportunity to meet the hosts and enjoy the most amazing full English breakfast made with quality ingredients. We’ll definitely be back and hope to enjoy the evening menu too next time. Large car park at the rear always a bonus.

We stayed 2 nights at the White Horse which was in an excellent position for exploring North Yorkshire. The room was spotless and tastefully decorated. There was a fridge in the room stocked with drinks and nibbles for a reasonable price. I slept really well, the bed was extremely comfortable and the room wasn't too hot. We both opted for the full English breakfast which was delicious. Loads of choices all cooked very well. In fact we didn't eat again until 4pm we were so full! My only warning are the stairs to get up to the bedroom which are very steep indeed. I had a problem with my hip and literally had to crawl up the 10 or so steps. There is ample parking behind the pub.

Husband and I spent one night here after travelling down from Scotland en route home to the Midlands. Lovely, cosy pub with a great, very pretty, comfortable bedroom named Lily. There was a mini bar fridge and some lovely homemade chocolate brownies in the room. Lots of attention to detail showed a lot of thought had gone into guests comfort. Shower was good, bed very comfortable and wifi also good and reliable. Unfortunately there was no chef so Dawn kindly booked us a table at The White Swan for dinner. John did cook us the most amazing full English breakfast the following morning. Would quite happily stay here again.

Stopped here with my partner on a Thursday evening after visiting locally and so pleased we did. Greeted by the owner who helped us with our luggage up the rather steep stairs ( note if you have mobility issues). Made us feel like friends rather than simply guests. Very well equipped room , named Rose. Large bed with good facilities, smart tv, drinks in mini bar fridge and hot drink facilities including fresh milk. Very nice bathroom with powerful shower. They are waiting to employ a new chef so have a limited menu, but we had a super chicken curry with great glass of wine that evening. Excellent freshly cooked breakfast to order with super pot of coffee. The quality os service by the owners would put larger and more expensive premises to shame. It’s a superb place to stop and eat. We will be back.

To have a short break away, we rented a small cottage in Hovingham, Nth Yorkshire. Whilst travelling to places of local interest we passed through Ampleforth and noticed the White Horse Inn and decided to give it a try. We telephoned and booked a table for the Saturday evening. We arrived and used the hand cleansing station and was shown to our table, menus were cleaned and provided to us and our drinks order taken. Sufficient time was allowed to make our choices (4 of us dining) and it was a short time when the food arrived. I can wax lyrical on the Steak in Guinness pie, is nothing other than excellent and the hand made chips are superb. My wife and her parents chose scampi, chips and salad, all were generous portions. Very attentive staff, provided a first class service. It was our last day on Tuesday and we wanted to return for our last meal out there. I phoned on the Monday morning, to be informed by the owner it was fully booked and we were all disappointed. Ten minutes or so later she rang me back informing me that there had been a cancellation if we wanted it, I confirmed we did. Once again excellent service, most places would not have bothered. The pub is a real gem: cosy surroundings, friendly staff, well kept local beer and delicious home cooked food. The whitebait starter and Steak and Guinness pie were especially tasty.Recommend booking to avoid disappointment but highly recommend visiting.

An impromptu visit on a Thursday evening. A traditional, cosy pub with excellent food and very attentive staff. The chicken pie had loads of filling and delicious pastry and the fish and chips had an excellent light batter. Will definitely be back to sample more of the menu.

This restaurant is set in an old English Inn which still retains the atmosphere. Visited on a random Tuesday night and there was a very good choice of food which was well presented and delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be visiting again.

This is rare - a five star restaurant review from me. We went for dinner last Tuesday and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our meals - shared starter of King Prawns with Chilli Sauce and main meals of Lamb Henry and Crab and Lobster Burger were so enjoyable - the Crab and Lobster Burger which was my choice - with chips and salad, no burger bun - was delicious - could actually taste the shellfish. On top of that, the service was excellent. Friendly, comfortable and dishes brought with just the right intervals between. Would recommend without hesitation.

We were welcomed on our visit and had a lovely Sunday lunch. We returned later in the week to join a quiz night which was good fun.

Came in here for a much needed quick drink at the end of what looked like it had been a very busy Sunday lunchtime, but the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. The interior is utterly traditional and they serve a wonderful pint of Theakstons. Only downside was the guy at the next table feeding his Sunday lunch to his three dogs. Not the pub’s fault, but very off putting.

I have eaten here several times recently and never been disappointed. It is a limited menu with at least 2 specials every day. If you are lucky enough to be there when haddock or sea bass are on special you will not be disappointed. The fish is very fresh and beautifully and simply cooked. Meat is from a local supplier and makes excellent pies and home made burgers. Prices are very reasonable and have been made very welcome thanks to Nikki and her front of house staff. Highly recommended.

Stopped for lunch after a drive around the local area. The White Horse used to have the reputation for excellent food but I’m afraid that must be a while ago. Our food was ok, service was ok but there are many better places to have lunch in this area so the bar is set rather higher these days. Prices should be more competitive for the type of food on offer.

Three of us are here at this charming, cozy pub. Lovely log fire, great menu, cooked to order, great service. The bar is popular and quite small. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, the whole meal experience was very relaxed and unhurried. A good selection of wines too. Would thoroughly recommend.

Visiting family and booked a table here. Sadly we didn’t have time for a pudding, which is a shame as they sounded lovely. We had chicken dinners, haddock and chips and a chilli, which was very spicy. Reasonably priced. Would visit again but making sure we had time for desserts.

We arrived as a group of 9 cold and tired after a ten mile walk. We were greeting with a roaring fire and a very cosy pub indeed. The owners were so welcoming and friendly. We had pre-booked a table and the majority of us had the steak pie which was DELICIOUS! The bar is dog friendly too!

I went here recently at a friend's invitation. Neither of us had been before so didn't know what to expect, - it was chosen for convenience. What a suprise! The hotel is in the village centre close to the famous Ampleforth School, it was easy to find and had adequate parking for the time we were there. The dining rooms were quite small and cosy, so different from many similar establishments, the service was spot-on and the food was excellent as regards quality, quantity and, importantly, presentation.

Family of 5 , 3 kids and Arlo the lab were given a lovely warm welcome by Nikki and her team after a sunday walk in the rain. Kids and dog made a big fuss off (doggie treats and post lunch chocolate buttons for the kids). Roast beef was lovely and the atmosphere was warm and cozy. Will definitely return.Highly recommended.
