My sister booked Christmas dinner for the family. The experience of eating at this hotel has put me off ever going out for Christmas dinner again. It felt as though I was eating dinner in a school dinner hall. It had no atmosphere, the room was poorly decorated looking as though the decorations had been hung in haste and as though they had been retrieved from a loft where they had been stored since the 1970’s. There was no background music. The staff were pleasant and polite and tried where possible to inject some Christmas spirit. The food was abysmal. There was a large choice, the starters and deserts were better than the mains but it wouldn’t surprise me if they were prepared or come straight from a packet. The main was disgusting my husband had the venison which was tough, I had the turkey, two thin slices, one roast potato and one Yorkshire pudding which were edible, nobody could get heating from frozen wrong. The swede (neap) and carrots looked as though they had been boiled within an inch of their lives containing no colour, the sprouts couldn’t have seen a saucepan of boiling water, they were rock hard. I was lucky they didn’t shoot off the plate when I tried to put my fork into them. The mash had a hard crust and there was something else on the plate that looked like a pile of oats. Totally inedible. My Dad’s dinner was swimming in watery gravy. We couldn’t get out fast enough, not stopping to complain, I didn’t want to make a fuss at an important dinner.

We had our club christmas meal last week. The food was fine, but the brussels were a bit firm. Some might say al dente but I like mine a bit softer. Came to dessert and I had banoffee pie. The crust was very firm which was ok for me, but halfway through eating, my bananas tasted of onions. My only thought is they had been sliced with the same knife as the onions. Two others had cheesecakes of different types, and the one with the orange cheesecake had bits of mint from the other cheesecake. Again the cakes had been sliced with the same knife. Do they only have one knife in the kitchen. It has put me off and I probably won't be back. No, I didn't say anything.

We went for dinner to celebrate a friend passing an exam. His mother ordered a bottle of veuve clicquot champagne. Once tasting the champagne we discovered it was “corked” (off) so we told the waitress. She then told the owner who came through, tasted the champagne out of the glass that my friend had drank from & the same one I had tasted then started to protest that it was not off!!! She then took the same glass & went around the restaurant asking dinners to try it & asking them if it was off with the same glass with my lipstick on it!!!! They sheepishly said it wasn’t off but as avid champagne drinkers you know the smell & taste!! This was nothing but completely embarrassing & really spoilt our celebration. She then argued with us that it wasn’t off & that she wouldn’t be opening another bottle because if we didn’t like this bottle chances are we wouldn’t like the next bottle!!! She said she’d take it off our bill but that’s not the point. With a friend who owns bars I know you return these “corked” bottles for a full refund. After around 20 mins she must have had a second thought and came through with a porn star martini cocktail. Well from a champagne drinker that’s falls way short & they way she treated us didn’t cut it.The food was lovely but the owner’s attitude & the way she dealt with this has really put us off visiting again. Would she have done the same if we thought the food wasn't right??

Found ourselves in the village of Strichen tonight due to sons band practice. Had our dog with us and was looking for a dog friendly place to eat. Was given a lovely welcome from Elaine and her staff. We had the roast beef special and was thankful they do small portions. The skirlie was lovely, and the gravy was too. DH had strawberry tart and cream to follow which went down a treat. Next time our son is practicing we will definitely go back. Elaine made a fuss of our dog Wilson too he’s full up after his treats, thank you.

We went for lunch on a birthday. The service was good ans the choice on the menu was good too. The food was served quickly and it was very nice althought the chicken fillets was over cooked by a minute I would say, but very tasty.

Food was amazing, can’t fault them for that. But the young waitress that served us was very bold and very rude. They were not busy at all so she couldn’t have been stressed. I don understand why she was being so rude but in my opinion she should be sacked!

I feel like I struck gold finding this place! As a family of vegetarians/vegans we really struggle to eat out in the North East of Scotland. At best, most places have one vegetarian option on the menu (and "Vegan" seems to be a bad word in many food places up here) however The White Horse has a whole page of vegan/vegetarian options along with vegan options in the deserts too. To top this off, the food was incredible AND very reasonably priced too! I will definitely be making this my go-to place for eating out now and introduce my family and friends to it as well.

I went to the White Horse in a party of 4 due to having heard it had a great Vegetarian menu and we weren't disappointed. The food was well cooked and the pub area - as every Tuesday, I believe - where we repaired later for a drink, had local musicians playing a gig. However the second time we went, which was for a Christmas Day lunch, the service was disorganised and the atmosphere a bit lacking, while the venison was not well cooked - it was chewy. However, on the basis of our first experience, we will be going back for Christmas Day this year, and I'll choose something more conventional to eat!

Our neighbours mentioned a while ago that they had been to theWhite Horse with friends and they loved it. So on a very rare venture out we decided to give this a go. On sitting down we we were surprised at the prices just for a lunch. But we thought what the heck, we'll stay. I friend ordered her drink and I asked for a coke with no ice. Now lets face it folks, Coke with no ice has to be one of the easiest things to supply to a customer. Well, not when it came to me. When it arrived I had a sip and the taste of artificial sweetener hit my tastebuds. I am a huge advocate against artificial sweeteners especially aspartame and saccharin and will never put them in my body. When the person taking the order returned to our table, I asked if it was diet coke, and I was told yes. I said that I can have diet coke due to the sweeteners and she said 'so you want the full fat one'. Since being diagnosed with many many conditions, I take a cocktail of tablets every day and they have made my weight go from a size 12 to lets just say, big. I have huge issues around my weight, but it has destroyed my metabolism as well as given me other issues. To hear 'full fat' was incredibly insultive. But what I don't understand is I'm guessing she clearly thought I needed diet coke! As I only eat one meal a day (yep incredibly wrong but back to my disabilities) I thought I would have a treat. I ordered 'The All Day Breakfast'! Huge mistake. As far as I'm concerned one of the easiest things to do in a kitchen is cook a fry up. Especially a breakfast. Clearly not on this occasion. I would like to know what sort of person who works in a kitchen thinks its acceptable to serve a hard fried yolk complete with ultra crispy brown egg white! And the black pudding was so soggy with fat/oil etc it wouldn't stay together so I could get it on the fork! Saturated is the only word I can think of. For £8.95 I received a crispy hard fried egg, 1 sausage, 1 piece of saturated black pudding, a hash brown, mushrooms 2 small bits of dried up bacon, a small bowl of beans and a few chips. The only decent thing was the sausage. But I've had better from The Co-op. My friend liked hers which was good, but personally, humiliated, annoyed and I thought way over charged I just put an incredibly brave face on. A very rare event of eating out, turned out to be a horrible experience. And trust me, I'm 53 and I'm not easily insulted! After the 'coke comment' really I should have just walked out. Ive eaten all over the uk and in many countries world wide and never have I felt like that. Certainly won't be back.

First time we've visited the White Horse Hotel in Strichen. Very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and at a very reasonable price. Extensive menu for a small village hotel especially the vegetarian option, I counted seven choices for the veggie main course, not just the usual macaroni cheese! Excellent service too, will definitely return and recommend to friends.

We have been to The White Horse a few times before and thought we would stop for something to eat after being out all day. How disappointed were we? We were greeted by a waitress who said yes they could accommodate 3 adults and a highchair but it would take a while as she 'had just cleared the table'???? whatever that meant! There was only one other table of 5 in the room! We were given menus and a specials sheet written in pencil on a piece of paper ripped from a notepad. Not a good start, but the girl came and took our order and off she went. I had asked if the chef would make a creamy mushroom or peppercorn sauce to go with the chicken Maryland I ordered and she said she would ask. To say we were waiting a while would be an understatement about 50 mins! My daughters pasta was barely edible except for the bit that was covered in sauce, although it was tasty. My hubby's fish was breaded but overcooked and dry. My chicken Maryland was ok but the chips were just cooked and the portion was tiny. As for my sauce I asked for I was told no they couldn't do that! Although we did eat what we had it was poorly cooked and nothing special at all. Waitress was very poor she didn't ask if we wanted any sauces with our food, if it was ok, didn't ask if we wanted puddings or coffee. Very disappointing overall and we won't bother again.
