Great evening spent at The White Horse, which was packed and had a wonderful atmosphere. Group of 8 of us. Service was excellent and lady was very amicable. Food was extremely good we tried every starter, main and dessert all of which we found to be excellent quality. Great portion sizes and fair pricing. Would definitely recommend and return. Thank you for a lovely experience.

Just had lunch here, beautiful village pub, landlord and landlady present very chatty and friendly, the food was excellent, extremely upmarket, if I could recommend anything have the KFC for starter, cauliflower in a sauce to die for and sea bass for main, cooked to perfection, the chef came out and told us his history of where he worked previously, chilled atmosphere with a wonderful reasonably priced menu, highly recommend

The White Horse has a new chef, and the food being served currently is very good. Have had a couple of Sunday lunches, which were excellent. Super Fish and Chips on Friday. Noticed 10oz Rib-Eye steak on menu and decided I would return the following week to try it. Wow ! I can honestly say, this was the best steak I have ever had, it was expensive, but clearly this was top quality meat, prepared to an excellent standard. Chips were good and the was some greenery, but really it was all about the Rib-Eye, 10oz thick cut medium rare, as requested, complemented by a lovely bearnaise sauce; perfect ! And then an Eton Mess to die for ! Will definitely repeat this experience again soon !

Came in for the Saturday “Thai Kitchen” evening for the 2nd time and wanted to leave a review of the great food and service received. Very friendly welcome into the pub, drinks order taken and shown to our table. Food order taken (set menu but were happy to make tweaks at our request). Every single dish on the menu tonight was delicious and all tasted beautifully fresh and authentic. We were given plenty of time between courses (at our request) no rushed feeling that they want you in and out that you sometimes get at restaurants. This is a great little ‘pop-up’ type dining experience and great to be able to get it on your doorstep. We hope you get the support required to continue this.

What company I shared for a Sunday lunch ? David and Maggie - respectively a speed boat designer from the 60's (who rubbed shoulders with Donald Campbell) and the 'first lady' LGV1 instructress in the UK - who told us she had once nearly turned over an "8 legger" tipper with a 'live load'. I had to learn the trade of LGV 1 driving from (former Sgt) Bert French of "Big Wheelers" in Reading whose sweet advice was to "Think of all those Yorkie Bars !" - not to mention the breakfasts at Wally's Cafe on the A41 ? Roast Beef and Yorkshires with cauliflower cheese. Sunday treat with Eddie French's farm and 'The Moat' nearby. The river Ousel; still young and flowing under the road to Northall is where I first tried to catch a fish - where only minnows and bullheads truly lurk. Night fishing as a teenager, friend Keith caught a golden tench that topped the three pound mark whereas all I had to show for the night which was punctuated by the long, sonorous farts of a grazing, grey, cart horse with 'feathers' on its shins. Neil Waller's Dad shot me a fox to disect on Eddie French's farm. I got much learning from the agricultural pest. Histology, tissue staining with Erlich's haematoxylin and light microscopy were the modest ambitions of my late teenage years. Angling (for trout and a chance Salmon on the River Wye near Tintern Abbey) were the passions of my late childhood in the region whose finest waterway was the River Ousel, where at Stoke Hammond - my Dad caught his first pike, which we carried home in high procession, like an alpine wolk in Tuscany.

The pub is quite large, once inside, but we were told we could sit with a choice of two tables! The rest of the pub was virtually empty. The tables were very close to a group of three already there. As they were so close it was difficult to sit down . Ridiculous when the rest of the pub was empty. My husband chose fish and chips, which he said was ok, but I chose vegetable lasagna, which was a tiny portion and tasteless. We decided to give the deserts a miss, after the poor lasagna. When we returned home I made myself a sandwich, as I was hungry!! The lady behind the bar, who also served the food, was very attentive, but the food needs a lot of improvement.

My daughter has lived in the village for a while & I finally got to visit the pub . Absolutely lovely building and interior / very welcoming, but sadly that’s it . So yes after 40 years in hospitality I may be more critical than some ! Chips were still hard in the middle : mash potatoes were sloppy strange tasting affair . But the real killer was £6.50 for a bowl of Heinz soup , unbaked in colour but rock hard roll , not even an attempt to disguise it with a crouton ! Come on £6.50 is really taking the ….! What made it worse was the waitress just picked up the untouched bowl of soup ! No Oww is there something wrong ! It was when I said I couldn’t / wouldn’t eat it she said she would take off the bill .

We had seen some very negative reviews about this pub but we liked the menu so decided to give it a go as it was local to us. We were very agreeably surprised as our experience was totally different to what we had read. We were greeted by the friendly landlady and given a pleasant table overlooking the village green. My husband ordered the steak and ale pie which was served with cauliflower cheese stem broccoli carrots and mash which was all delicious. I opted for the chicken salad with garlic bread which was good with huge chunks of chicken. Greedily we order dessert..treacle syrup sponge and the roulade with ice cream..yummy. Not a huge choice but enough to want to return.Especially as service was good and the staff charming. We were very pleased that despite negativity beforehand. It is a cosy little pub which deserves local support in these hard time.

This is a great old pub (possibly Tudor) is memorable for me because I used to fish at night in the moat around Eaton Bray Castle. Under cover of darkness, the 'White Horse" in my lifetime was a heavy 'grey' which had done service as either a 'plough-puller' of maybe a jousting steed under Henry VIII ? But as we fished for bream and golden tench (a giant goldfish) the White Horse let rip the most outstanding farts that ever caused a fishing umbrella to nearly take off ! To this day.. a great place for friends and family to eat, drink and be merry

Visited for Sunday lunch. Have never been before. Pub has a nice village setting. Inside it looks good and is cosy. Staff friendly (didn't encounter the man mentioned in previous reviews). We were informed there was a half hour wait for food, although the place was virtually empty. The food was mediocre. Tomato soup obviously out of a tin. Roasts (chicken and beef) cold and of very low quality, with a small portion of thin beef and chewy chicken. We won't be back which is a pity because it obviously could be good. But it isn't worth the risk. My first thought was that the chef had quit, hence the poor quality of food being and long wait. Perhaps they were just trying to cover in the kitchen. But from previous reviews it's obvious that this has been going on for a while.

Very poor from start to finish. Pub was so quite, two people other than us. Pub speaks for itself. Seriously not one to complain, hate being one of them customers but it was a must. Came in with partner and mum for Sunday roast. Initially staff were cold but thought fair enough. Sunday roast came up, was very cold, meat wasn’t cooked properly, two potatoes, veg was bleak and cauliflower was almost none. Mums parter wanted a vegetarian option, staff were reluctant to even check if there was any. I hate complaining at all but for £11:50, so I asked staff could we at least get some more cauliflower/ potatoes to which staff said, the chef has said “NO”. I decided to go speak to the manager who I would describe as the most arrogant man I have come across in a long time. Initially I asked could we get some more veg to which he said, “they are set portions, you are not getting anymore” he was so arrogant I just asked for a refund after this, “ NO YOUR NOT GETTING A REFUND NOW” I then said, so you won’t refund me, you won’t give me a little bit more food, I then asked could you at least re heat the food, he said. “ bring the plates back then” This is when I said, “why should I have to bring the plates back in?” Only because other customers were inside were about to leave did he decide to re heat the food, he didn’t want to. There was so much anger in this mans face I thought he was going to hit me. I had to eat the food as I had paid for it, it was horrible, I then asked for a receipt to which I was refused as well. Staff were hostile, manager was arrogant, food was horrible, seriously take your money elsewhere, pub looks nice, manager has got bad temper.. Look at the other reviews, the pub was completely empty and this speaks for the reason why.

This is a lovely independent pub/restaurant which serves great food. We visited September 2017 for lunch. My wife had the Bunkers sausage's with Bubble and Squeak and me, chicken BBQ sauce and Bunkers sausage with lyonnaise potatoes. We assume the sausages are from a local butcher and twice the size of a standard sausage. If you like a big meaty sausage, calm down ladies! You will like these, there is plenty to get your chops round. The food was good and hot. We didn't expect service at the table, being in the bar, but are order was taken at the table which was nice. You also get a chocolate at the end of your meal which is unusual for a pub lunch. I was drinking Budweiser drought lager at £5.00 a pint, which is a bit expensive, other beers may have been cheaper but I assume I was paying over the odds as it is a independent pub. That aside, it is a great place to eat with a nice beer garden where they offer live jazz music on a Sunday afternoon if you fancy a bit of music with your Sunday roast. I believe a previous review mentioned 'tired garden furniture.' Well it looks as if this comment has been addressed, as it looked quite new when we visited. Very good.

We went with friends on a Friday evening expecting a traditional local pub with a friendly atmosphere and reasonably priced drinks. The pub was almost empty at 8pm in the evening with an atmosphere similar to the local crematorium. If thats not enough to put you off I paid £6.30 for a house gin and tonic! That was the point where I understood why the place was deserted. There are loads of great pubs within a mile or two, I'd urge you, if you fancy and enjoyable night out with friends to try one of them.

Still not reached the heights of its previous incarnations of a few years ago sadly. Nice selection of beers but not such a good selection of white wine and the garden could definitely do with a spruce up to make it more welcoming. However, a reasonable menu selection of light lunches, snacks and a-la-carte at reasonable prices. Sadly for us, there was very little choice of GF and DF allergy meals which is a bit sad in this day and age. Whilst there were a number of GF options marked up on the menu,( which was good) the DF request was met with some uncertainty which did not engender a great deal of confidence that the kitchen brigade knew if the produce was or wasn't DF. Shame as otherwise the rating would be higher.

Lovely pub on the outside and has been in the village for 300 years. Only problem is that that the landlord (Tom) wants to turn it into an image of himself; sullen, miserable, quiet and rather boring. Don't go here if you expect a warm welcome or even a pleasant greeting, these things aren't part of the deal. I think his idea is to make customers feel as unwelcome as possible in order to have the place to himself. This could be a great village pub but it's gradually being run down by lack of music, TV, entertainment and ambience.

Ordered drinks but despite only a few people also ordering it took 15 mins to get the drinks. Apparently problems with the lemonade. The barmaid was very unfriendly and we got the impression that unless you were a local you weren't welcome. Won't go there again.

Couldn't fault it. They let us take the dog in while we sat and ate our lunch. The food was fantastic and the staff were lovely. Had some conversations with what looked like locals and had a very nice atmosphere to the entire place. Will definitely be returning the next time we visit. (Whatever dressing was on the salad was the nicest I've ever had )

We have been to The White Horse four times in recent weeks and each time have enjoyed a good pub meal. The menu caters for everyone and each night there are also specials. Tonight I had the Bunkers sausages with celeriac mash & onion rings. As the gentleman in the previous review says there are two Bunker sausages( speciality sausage from the local butcher) but they are large, not small, and are very tasty. The celeriac mash was not lumpy and complimented the sausages. . We had starters and main courses washed down with a bottle of delicious St Clair, Sauvignon blanc,( didn't fancy red wine tonight) and we had a very enjoyable meal.

An initially warm welcome turned sour on being charged 90p for half a pint of water. I was in a rush and needed some food otherwise I would have left. I ordered sausage and mash for £12.25. That did seem expensive but sounded quick. I did not realise but the menu did not say how many sausages - which is usually 3. It was 2! And small ones. The mash was lumpy and served with deep fried onion rings - presumably from the freezer. All in all a thoroughly disappointing meal for £12.25 plus 90p for half a pint of water. This once very busy pub was almost deserted - an inevitable result of just ripping off customers.

This is a nice country pub that we frequented years ago and decided to try it again for lunch. I ordered a pint of Peroni and a glass of wine. The Peroni was warm, I took it back and was eventually told that the cellar cooler had to be rebooted and the larger would take at least an hour and a half to cool down. I was offered the bottled variety but opted for a real ale. You purists out there would have loved it but for me that was also a little too warm. Anyway food: We were out that evening so just went for the sharing platter. This was a mix of chicken goujons, samosas, duck rolls etc. It took an absolute age to arrive and when it did it was all just warm except for the chicken bits. We will probably try this place again for a proper meal as i'm hoping they'll take more care than they did with the buffet food.

To some of us "Real" (cask) ales are something to be enjoyed ... in moderation of course (!!), but all too frequently they are not because of the way they are kept. Not so at the White Horse in Eaton Bray where the cask ales are really excellent. Having frequented this pub for a number of years I can honestly say that in my opinion you will not find a better pint of Old Speckled Hen anywhere ... it really is superb, and so good that I opt for it in preference to the wonderful London Pride and Doombar which are also on offer. So if you like your real ale then try the White Horse ... I am sure you will not be disappointed.

I was fortunate enough to eat here to celebrate a friend's birthday. The staff were very efficient, yet warm and friendly. The menu catered for all possible requirements, and the food was beautiful! Very well presented, good sized portions and very tasty. I chose the lamb shank, which was served on top of mashed potatoes and various other vegetables on a huge soup bowl style platter. The meat was 'melt in your mouth' tender, and the veg cooked to perfection. My chocolate brownie pud was to die for ...... large portion, surrounded by sauce and the cream made into an attractive feather pattern. I want to marry the person that made it - sooooooo yummy. Would I go back ..... oh yesssss!! Highly recommend this lovely place!

Were taken there by friends. There was a very warm welcome and cheerful and efficient service. The presentation of all dishes was something which sold the meals. Although this was backed up by quality food well cooked. Imaginative menu and unusual specials. We were certainly well looked after and felt really welcome. Would go again

Visited here several times for drinks and decided to eat hereFood was ok, cheese a little thin on ground on the jacket potato. My biggest shock was £5.95 for a pudding. There was no prices on the smaller menu but thought they would be about £4.50 like the others. So ordered the roll poly with custard, nothing posh and the plate was as it says. When it came to pay 12pds for two average puddings. Also watch out when ordering cokes. Some members of staff will just give you a bottle, without checking some give draught the difference is 70 pence it's not a lot but for the same drink it's silly. Staff are friendly but to be honest this has put me off visiting againI don't mind paying for good food, and paying the extra for something special but two thin slices of roly poly and tinned custard (yes I could tell) £5.95 nope I think I will be keeping my money in the bank.

Popped in here a few weeks ago for a lunch time drink with the family after a long morning of shopping. Was warmly welcomed to the pub by the landlord and the girls behind the bar. Our daughter was given a table, crayons and colouring books to play with which was lovely... although a bit strange given that she's 23.(lol, only kidding, she's 3 really). We wasn’t intending to eat here but upon seeing the food going out to other tables, we couldn’t resist. The food was fresh and well cooked. I had the fresh scampi, chips and mushy peas which was superb. Our visit left such a good impression on us that we’ve been back 3 more times since! One tiny suggestion would be if they could add some burgers to their menu for a quick lunch time meal.

Most pubs provide food or bar meals, but the White Horse in Eaton Bray is exceptional. Overall, food quality is excellent, well presented and average cost. Service is very friendly and attentive, and a range of tastes are amply accommodated. Don't know where they found their chef, but we have never been disappointed and the choices, from several menus, easily meets most people's expectations. Sunday roasts and the treacle and stem ginger tart are recommended. Setting is olde worlde with and the whole character of the pub, itself, is excellent. Highly recommended !

Eighteen of us had lunch at the White Horse after a walk on Thursday 22nd October. People were unanimous in their praise for the meal and several said that it was the best pub lunch that the group had had and very good value for money. My husband and I, who organised the visit, found the management very pleasant and efficient to deal with and the serving staff were friendly and helpful.

Always a great time in the Highwayman. The staff are always welcoming and helpful, a special mention for Maria who is always so bubbly and smiling even when it's busy. One massive gripe is GK should replace the chairs on tables 33, 34 and 35! Other than that great place!
