This is a lovely independent pub/restaurant which serves great food. We visited September 2017 for lunch. My wife had the Bunkers sausage's with Bubble and Squeak and me, chicken BBQ sauce and Bunkers sausage with lyonnaise potatoes. We assume the sausages are from a local butcher and twice the size of a standard sausage. If you like a big meaty sausage, calm down ladies! You will like these, there is plenty to get your chops round. The food was good and hot. We didn't expect service at the table, being in the bar, but are order was taken at the table which was nice. You also get a chocolate at the end of your meal which is unusual for a pub lunch. I was drinking Budweiser drought lager at £5.00 a pint, which is a bit expensive, other beers may have been cheaper but I assume I was paying over the odds as it is a independent pub. That aside, it is a great place to eat with a nice beer garden where they offer live jazz music on a Sunday afternoon if you fancy a bit of music with your Sunday roast. I believe a previous review mentioned 'tired garden furniture.' Well it looks as if this comment has been addressed, as it looked quite new when we visited. Very good.

I don't often write bad reviews but I can't help myself after visiting. We went with friends on a Friday evening expecting a traditional local pub with a friendly atmosphere and reasonably priced drinks. The pub was almost empty at 8pm in the evening with an atmosphere similar to the local crematorium. If thats not enough to put you off I paid £6.30 for a house gin and tonic! That was the point where I understood why the place was deserted. There are loads of great pubs within a mile or two, I'd urge you, if you fancy and enjoyable night out with friends to try one of them.

I visited with my family as we were passing through the village. The service and atmosphere were good. I wasn't blown away by the food though.I had sausage with bubble & squeak. The sausages tasted very cheap. I'm unsure if they had been deep fried but I wouldn't choose it again. The bubble & squeak was bland. My husband had the roast which he finished so I guess this is the dish to opt for!The children's meals were very standard, I wish they could have healthy options, not all children want chips with everything and no veg!Served its purpose but the food could be a lot better.

Was hunting for the perfect venue for my 50 th birthday get together, for family and friends, and found everything I wanted in the White Horse in Eaton Bray ; a warm and cosy traditional country pub. Tom and team couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating , the buffet food was delicious and plentiful and catered well for the vegetarians and gluten free guests. The blues band were fabulous , and stayed on late at our request. The dining room was set aside for our personal use , but was close enough to get the buzz from the pub and to hear the music. Honestly couldn't have hoped for a more perfect location for my special birthday. Highly recommended for your special events. We will definitely be back

Still not reached the heights of its previous incarnations of a few years ago sadly. Nice selection of beers but not such a good selection of white wine and the garden could definitely do with a spruce up to make it more welcoming. However, a reasonable menu selection of light lunches, snacks and a-la-carte at reasonable prices. Sadly for us, there was very little choice of GF and DF allergy meals which is a bit sad in this day and age. Whilst there were a number of GF options marked up on the menu,( which was good) the DF request was met with some uncertainty which did not engender a great deal of confidence that the kitchen brigade knew if the produce was or wasn't DF. Shame as otherwise the rating would be higher.

Lovely pub on the outside and has been in the village for 300 years. Only problem is that that the landlord (Tom) wants to turn it into an image of himself; sullen, miserable, quiet and rather boring. Don't go here if you expect a warm welcome or even a pleasant greeting, these things aren't part of the deal. I think his idea is to make customers feel as unwelcome as possible in order to have the place to himself. This could be a great village pub but it's gradually being run down by lack of music, TV, entertainment and ambience.

We have been to The White Horse four times in recent weeks and each time have enjoyed a good pub meal. The menu caters for everyone and each night there are also specials. Tonight I had the Bunkers sausages with celeriac mash & onion rings. As the gentleman in the previous review says there are two Bunker sausages( speciality sausage from the local butcher) but they are large, not small, and are very tasty. The celeriac mash was not lumpy and complimented the sausages. . We had starters and main courses washed down with a bottle of delicious St Clair, Sauvignon blanc,( didn't fancy red wine tonight) and we had a very enjoyable meal.

An initially warm welcome turned sour on being charged 90p for half a pint of water. I was in a rush and needed some food otherwise I would have left. I ordered sausage and mash for £12.25. That did seem expensive but sounded quick. I did not realise but the menu did not say how many sausages - which is usually 3. It was 2! And small ones. The mash was lumpy and served with deep fried onion rings - presumably from the freezer. All in all a thoroughly disappointing meal for £12.25 plus 90p for half a pint of water. This once very busy pub was almost deserted - an inevitable result of just ripping off customers.

This is a nice country pub that we frequented years ago and decided to try it again for lunch. I ordered a pint of Peroni and a glass of wine. The Peroni was warm, I took it back and was eventually told that the cellar cooler had to be rebooted and the larger would take at least an hour and a half to cool down. I was offered the bottled variety but opted for a real ale. You purists out there would have loved it but for me that was also a little too warm. Anyway food: We were out that evening so just went for the sharing platter. This was a mix of chicken goujons, samosas, duck rolls etc. It took an absolute age to arrive and when it did it was all just warm except for the chicken bits. We will probably try this place again for a proper meal as i'm hoping they'll take more care than they did with the buffet food.

To some of us "Real" (cask) ales are something to be enjoyed ... in moderation of course (!!), but all too frequently they are not because of the way they are kept. Not so at the White Horse in Eaton Bray where the cask ales are really excellent. Having frequented this pub for a number of years I can honestly say that in my opinion you will not find a better pint of Old Speckled Hen anywhere ... it really is superb, and so good that I opt for it in preference to the wonderful London Pride and Doombar which are also on offer. So if you like your real ale then try the White Horse ... I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Visited here several times for drinks and decided to eat hereFood was ok, cheese a little thin on ground on the jacket potato. My biggest shock was £5.95 for a pudding. There was no prices on the smaller menu but thought they would be about £4.50 like the others. So ordered the roll poly with custard, nothing posh and the plate was as it says. When it came to pay 12pds for two average puddings. Also watch out when ordering cokes. Some members of staff will just give you a bottle, without checking some give draught the difference is 70 pence it's not a lot but for the same drink it's silly. Staff are friendly but to be honest this has put me off visiting againI don't mind paying for good food, and paying the extra for something special but two thin slices of roly poly and tinned custard (yes I could tell) £5.95 nope I think I will be keeping my money in the bank.

This is a local pub to me and I have eaten here many times. The menu has a good selection and the fish dishes are very nice. I've never had a bad meal here whether it be steak, fish, salad or pie, friday's and saturdays can be quite busy in the evening so would recommend booking if you want the typical 7:30 - 8pm slot. Sometimes you have a little wait for the food on these nights but it's not a big deal. Resonably priced, nice friendly staff, good atmosphere and puddings are very nice! It has a separate dining area from the pub area, but I've always eaten in the pub area. The dining area can be hired out for a large group.

Stopped in while passing through for a quick snack - evidently something that the White Horse does not offer!Ordered one portion of chips. Ten minutes later checked on our order to be told that the kitchen was busy but the chips were being cooked as we spoke, so should only be a few minutes.A further ten minutes passed and I checked again - amazingly the chips had gone back in time and were no longer being cooked, but had reverted to their pre-cooked "about to go on" state...Ten more minutes pass, I ask for a refund. The waitress promises that the chips are just cooking! By this stage I was just looking forward to leaving, but having waited half an hour already decide that a few more minutes wont' hurt and at least I can leave having finally got the chips....but guess what happened after a further five minutes? That was the last straw, and after persisting in my request for a refund the waitress finally backed down, stopped lying that chips were cooking, and gave me my money back. Shame she couldn't give me back thirty five minutes of my life along with it!There was also a large queue of customers at the bar complaining that they'd waited over an hour for a roast dinner and their kids were now starting to play up. At least the service is consistent. You've got to give them that.Overall, if you don't mind a very long wait, poor service, and being lied to, try the White Horse! If you want to be respected as a customer and provided with decent service, avoid.

The menu is great, lots of choice nice specials, unusual but not pretentious, well cooked and such value for money - esp if they have an offer of 2 or 3 course. It seems locally either the pubs are expensive or rubbish this is none of those, good value and good old fashioned customer service. Will def come back.

Let me say first off that the White Horse is our local. We have lived here for seven years ( Eaton Bray ), and have visited our local on various occasions, usually for food. In the past, quality has varied between good and so so. This evening, we were celebrating an anniversary, didn't fancy taking the car so we walked over the road. Service was quick and polite, we found a table and we're handed the menus and specials card. Kathy, who has dietary problems, went for her usual plain meal ( scampi and chips) and I had soup and the smoked cod from the specials card. The soup arrived, it was butternut squash and something else. Surprise surprise it was interesting, with a bit of spice to it, very nice with warm bread and butter. The main course arrived after a short wait as it was being cooked fresh and it was worth the wait. Smoked cod covered with a mushroom sauce with shrimps, vegetables and mashed potatoes. Quite often, these dishes look better on the card than in the flesh, as it were. This was even better than expectation. The fish was lovely and fresh, the accompanying sauce perfect. Even the vegetables were good. The dessert menu was small and I usually go for the cheese board but this time there was a dessert on the specials card that appealed. Apple and stem ginger pudding. Again, this turned out to be above expectation. Lovely light sponge soaked in the apple and ginger and it tasted as per description, which, in my experience, is quite often not the case. Served with a raspberry sauce, presentation was very good.Because We are not wine drinkers, Kathy will have a glass of water and I like a real ale which was served well, not always the case. I like putting good reviews on Trip advisor and this one I liked a lot.

I took my Fiancée to this place for Valentines must say what a lovely place, old pub with super real ales and the food was fantastic the staff very friendly and didn't bother us to much rose petles scattered on the table were a nice touch the steak was lovely just that I had the lamb shank and could have done with a bit more meat on it for the price but we will go again and is on our list for best pubs.

just a quick review of this fantastic village pub, if you want a good selection of food cooked with care and attention then this is the place to go, I have eaten here on many occasions and the chef has never failed to deliver a tasty well presented meal. This pub deserves to be bursting at the seams with patrons. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and deserve to succeed in keeping this traditional British pub authentic .It really is a hidden gem. Go and sample the great food before a restauranter with deep pockets snaps the chef up for his own use..The food is in my opinion very good value, for those of you who disagree I suggest you continue your meals out at mc Donald's.Thanks to all staff, keep up the good work.

Saturday lunch and what a surprise! Smoked goose with blueberry sauce - inspirational. Beautifully presented. Mash with shallots, red cabbage & asparagus. It was divine! Compliments to the chef & the staff. Relaxed, comfortable, unpretentious and all within walking distance. For those not so lucky, The White Horse is definitely worth the drive.

Good food, good beer, friendly staff, lovely quaint English pub.Found during a local geneology trip around the area looking for my wife's mothers family -they lived around here in the 1600's apparently, and looking at some of the buildings today, they would have been familiar to them in the past -we would like to think they drank in the White Horse!Nice little village to walk around too.

We visited the White House as part of a family group of four on a Saturday evening and it was surprisingly quite. As two of us are vegetarians we asked if the menu had veggie options and were told it did. Unfortunately the landlord's idea of veggie options and vegetarians' ideas of what is vegetarian obviously differ: nearly all the options marked with a "V" were fish dishes! Note to restaurant and pub owners: fish isn't a vegetable! So that's a pretty poor start to the dining experience, especially as the menu seemed to have loads of sea food options and only a few other options for veggies. As we'd come out there and the meat eaters were OK with the menu we carried on. Once ordered the food came and was fine as a basic "pub food" but nothing really to write home about.

I took friends to The White Horse on Friday lunchtime. It was their first visit to the pub , although I had been there before to eat in the past and was very impressed with the place .We were greeted by the Landlord who asked us to go straight to our table while he sent a waitress to take our drinks order. We all chose from the £6 weekday lunchtime menu, and our meals were all of an excellent quality and very enjoyable indeed. I have never known better value for money , and we all agreed that the service and standard of our lunchtime expirence was that of a restaurant charging three times the price. Desserts are not to be missed , as the chef created 'works of art' on our plates which tasted just as beautiful as they looked.I would not hesitate in recommending or taking friends to The White Horse in the future .

A friendly village pub with a classic menu. This means there are no surprises with the food choice, but what is on offer is fantastic, with some novel takes on classic dishes. Friendly staff and owner make you feel welcome from the start. Recommended if you are in the area.

Roast beef was excellent, cooked beautifully and sooo tender. Just perfect home-cooked food. Veg was a lovely accompaniment, not too much and not too little. Landlord was friendly and staff were helpful. What more do you need for Sunday lunch?

Although I have already praised this restaurant in the past. I feel I must add a huge thankyou to the Landlord, Landlady,Chef and staff. We had a wonderful family celebration for my Mum's 90th birthday. My brother and one of my son's had flown in especially to join us. I have to say that the meal was perfect (most had the Sunday roast), The Staff went over and above to help the lunch go well. There were 16 of us, so we took over the restaurant with one long table and they allowed us to decorate the room. The meals were all out at the same time and were hot and tasty. Mum had ice cream for pudding and the Chef even customised this - writing Happy 90th Birthday around the plate, a very special touch. Lots of positive comments from everyone. Some saying it was the best Sunday lunch in a restaurant they'd ever had. Mum's favourite drink is a bellini, it was no trouble at all for them to start us off with these and they went down very well indeed. Would certainly recommend this restaurant whatever the occasion.

An attractive pub overlooking the picturesque village green, it consists of a beer garden at the rear, a single room bar wrapped around a central bar counter and a restaurant area off to one side. It seems a very pleasant pub in a very nice spot, and the landlord was friendly and very helpful. The main bar area has a traditional country pub feel to it, with a blue carpeted floor and the walls being predominantly rough white plasterwork with black timbers. The low ceiling had a number of beams adjourned with horse brasses whilst there were a few local pictures, plates, etc., scattered around the walls. There were a couple of brick chimney breasts, although whether the fires are used in the colder weather I’m not sure. One contained a stack of logs, the other an old gas fire. The restaurant area looked to be more contemporary with a wooden floor and upright, leather chairs although I did not investigate this. The garden had plenty of picnic benches, as well as a covered area off to one side that included a plasma screen showing the tennis.Food wise, the menu wasn’t particularly extensive, but I’d always go for quality over quantity and there should be something to suit most tastes. Main courses were mostly somewhere around the £9 - £12 range, and included pub classics such as Steak or Scampi & Chips, but also some slightly more adventurous options such as a lamb shank or chilli, coriander & red onion sausages. My crayfish, pea & wild mushroom risotto was a decent and tasty dish.Beers on tap were London Pride, Doom Bar, Old Speckled Hen and Greene King IPA. The solitary cider was Aspall’s Suffolk. Overall, despite the slightly unadventurous beer choice, I really liked this pub and would certainly return if on the area.

This was our first visit since the pub changed ownership which I think is more than a year ago, previous visit did not leave us wanting to rush to return, but we did and were pleasantly surprised. The pub is an honest village pub with very friendly staff, and a well constructed menu. It is not over elaborate and the atmosphere was homely, the food was well cooked, asked for my steak rare and it was perfectly done, the battered cod did look as if it might have come from a packet but those eating it did not complain. We had a lovely evening, no loud music to compete with, no clanging fruit machines or overbearing football jabber. We will return, its a really nice place

Our first visit for a meal was not brilliant. The salmon dish was great, but the steak in peppercorn sauce was bland and devoid of pepper. Wanting to give them a second chance we booked again, for a table of three and the food was even worse than before. The prawn starter was tasteless but worse still we were served a chicken liver pate that was as runny as water and they KNEW was not yet set or ready to be served (when queried, a waitress told us "oh yeah..it wasn't ready..do you wanna refund?!!!!!..). Will definately NOT return here again.

This is clearly a "local pub for local people", but unlike in The League of Gentlemen we were made very welcome. The atmosphere was friendly, as were the bar staff, and our meal was not only delicious but well presented and great value too. If you live in the village you're very lucky. If you don't, it's worth a trip for a meal and a decent choice of beers in pleasant surroundings.

A late review, but not because of any issues with the White Horse.Considering it was Valentine's Night, it was not heaving, but acceptably busy, though we found some of the other diner's attire perplexingly unromantic and scruffy considering the underlying reasons for taking one's partner out on this night. The restaurant area was enhanced with some heart-shaped helium balloons and the tables had heart-shaped candles and trimmings - not excessive, just something to add to the occasion. Also each table had a Valentine's card for the couple on the table. (We were invited to take our table decorations away with us - but restricted ourselves to the helium balloon, but don't ask us why.)The evening offered a small 'Special' Valentine's menu in addition to the main menu, and we both chose from this. We both had the Chicken Liver Parfait, which we both agreed was delicious and felt that this could, with some alteration to the portion size, be adapted as a lunch snack, the home made bread complementing the whole and the taste balance perceived to be about right. We followed this with Sea Bass Fillets and the Pork Chop, and both were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The accompanying seasonal vegetables were different for the two dishes - the sea bass including asparagus and the pork chop having an unexpected selection that had been sauteéd or stir-fried, this actually went very well with the pork and probably improved the enjoyment of the dishNot having the larger appetites of the under 40s, we declined the dessert, prefer to be content with what we had had, though whether this was down to the Chicken Liver Parfait and the home made bread, is a point for discussion! All in all, the White Horse is exactly what it is supposed to be, a friendly efficient and well-run village pub, with good value food, a friendly atmosphere and the owners and their team giving customers a comfortable atmosphere and relaxing environment (no gaming machines, football on the TV, or intrusive music).Would we go again?Without doubt.

I consider that I have high expectations when dining and don't usually dine in pubs because experience has taught me that the food delivered isn't really of a standard I appreciate. However I dined with a friend who has moved to the village and couldn't believe the quality (and quantity) of the food. Phil's beef and ale pie served with mashed potato and seasonal vegetables was absolutely delicious. I recommend it heartily!

I have been to a good few Burns celebrations but this was one of the best. Going to a restaurant is primarily about the quality of the food for me and the new chef at the White Horse excelled again on Burns night. The main (accompanied by the traditional address to the haggis) was shoulder of lamb haggis neeps and tatties with the most delightful hearty gravy. Served by delightful staff in a great atmosphere. I'm definitely going back

I was booked in here with the rest of my family for the 2 nights either side of my son's wedding. The accommodation is situated in the car park with the beer garden opposite. This made it too noisy for me to get an early night on the Friday as there were cars driving right past my room and a very noisy party in the beer garden. The person in the room above made a telephone call and I heard most of his side of that too. It finally quietened down around midnight. Saturday we were too busy partying elsewhere and when we got back at half midnight everything was quiet. The bed however was one of the comfiest I've ever slept on! I did struggle with the room being very hot as there was only 1 small opening window and I couldn't really sleep with the door open! As the website says it provides Bed and Breakfast, I was looking forward to a cooked breakfast. Sadly the reason there is a fridge in your room, is because you get presented with a small carton of milk and there is a small pack of cornflakes in your room, plus a cereal bar. Not what any of my family were expecting!
