You can’t go to Whitby and not visit the abbey,So while you are there you have to visit the brewery great ale and lovely atmosphere.

Love this place for a cheeky pint! Black death is a must try! Would be 5 Stars if there was more seating and the pizzas were a little more value for money. Other than that it's a belter of a place!

Lovely old building housing the brewery. Quite a few seats inside and loads more outside seating with views of the ruins of the Whitby Abbey. Also great views nearby over Whitby Bay.

Good beer and a great place to recover from a long hike along the coast.

Fresh, tasty beer directly from the brewery in a charmingly renovated old farm in the shade of the mighty ruins of Whitby Abbey. What more could you want!?

Can get busy but that's because it's good! Only card payments are accepted so make sure whoever is paying has theirs! We took the tour last year, ably hosted by Devon, which was very informative and included sampling various ales, well worth the ticket price. Visited again this year for a swift one, not disappointed. Soft drinks available for the kids / drivers and public pay n display carpark just around the corner. Fab views of the abbey literally opposite. Recommended.

Beautiful setting, up opposite the staggeringly beautiful and iconic abbey. Service was busy, a queuing system was in place,the server was an extremely miserable woman who clearly didn't want to be there,( not sure why as I'd kill to work in this setting rather than sat homeworking everyday not seeing anyone!)...but we persevered through the order , 2 beers and a pizza! Beer was....ok, not a great drinker of ale but I do like my local Ossett pale and wasn't a scratch on that ( in my humble opinion) the pizza however was amazing , freshly made in front of your very eyes! Hot and delicious. So all in all i'd advice go at least once in your life, if only to drink a beer by the Abbey .

Found this place on the first day of our holiday as our campsite was a half hour walk away, stayed for a couple of Smugglers Gold and Proseccos and bought some bottles and a glass to take back. Lovely vibe and views of the Abbey so we decided to walk back the following day for pizza. That is where we made a mistake! The next evening we walked the half an hour back there with 2 tired dogs and 2 hungry teenagers looking forward to pizza and a few drinks. The website stated that they served food until 7pm. They don’t. Upon arrival at 6.15pm on a very warm Monday we were told that they had sold out. I asked if we could get a takeaway (so that we could at least stay for a few drinks). Absolutely not, as it was their business (even though they didn’t have any food!). The lady (in charge?) kindly suggested that we walk all the way back to our site and order a Dominoes there. Good job we’d bought a couple of bottles the day before I guess! So yes, a very disappointing evening out and I do not recommend walking there for food. I have now seen other reviews which say the same thing. And we now have an unwanted “Whitby Brewery” glass to remind us of the experience 🤦🏻‍♀️

Beers are outstanding, in an iconic location. Pizzas top notch and light as a feather. Dog and child friendly, live music Friday Saturday. Well done for knocking it out of the park.

Very little keg ale on offer. Yes Black Death is lovely but 6.66%! Its summer and Keg is far more refreshing than cask, the barman agreed but only seems to ever have one or maybe a one off other on occasionally. We came for pizza on our 2nd occasion (6pm so Tea time!) summer holiday Wednesday and all sold out!! A little surprised and was unwelcome as we had come here for tea after an 8 mile walk. No signs to say they had sold out of food either.

Worth the walk up. Lovely pint could halve stopped for more. Staff very pleasant nice seating area. Will definitely call again

A lovely hidden gem that we found by accident but definitely would come again, lovely home brewed lager and ale and the pizza went down a treat for lunch 🍻🍕

The car park is quite a walk from the brewery and is very expensive at the Abbey. The access from the pavement is down a grass slope onto the road which should have a few steps and handrails for the elderly/disabled. The brewery does not offer tea or coffee options for drivers or those not wanting alcohol. I know this is a brewery but people shouldn't have to drink and drive if they are wanting to attend. The parking issue is not good for a visitor centre.

It's well worth climbing the 199 steps to find this little gem. We sat on benches in the sunshine with Whitby Abby peeping over the wall behind us

Nowhere better to have a pint in Whitby!

Whitby Brewery is an absolute hidden gem behind Whitby Abbey. Traverse the 100 steps, pass through the Abbey and you will see it ahead of you. They brew their own ales, the Whitby Whaler and the Smugglers Gold are particuly good. Prices are decent, a must-try line up of independant ales. The location alone wins it for me, as you get an amazing view of the Abbey from outside and plenty of seeting. Staff are awesome, they have a pizza kitchen inside the barn. Love the grafittied tables, like being back at school. They also have a stage for live events. Must be a sight to see during Goth weekend? Highly recommend, I stop here for a pint or 2 everytime I visit Whitby. Can't recommend this place enough.

Great place to stop and have a drink after walking up the steps to the top. Good selection of beers and also sells other drinks. Lovely outside seating for good weather and also inside seating. The husband thoroughly enjoyed his blonde beer and I was very happy with my cider. Great staff. The toilet facilities were clean and well maintained too.

Nice and friendly place for drinks

The staff were not interested in customers on Friday 26 April. No knowledge of their products, no knowledge of performing bands to another customer, more interested in their own conversations. We will go elsewhere to spend our money. Total waste of time. Bad experience.

Great location for a freshly brewed beer after climbing the steps up to the Abbey

Great location and equally good choice of beers for around £5 a pint. Had 4 or 5 cask and same number of keg ales ranging from larger to blond ales and stouts. Music on a Saturday at 7pm and Sunday afternoon if that's your thing. We happily stayed for a couple and would revisit for sure! New toilets in the making or so the sign said.

Nice place to go In summer and sit outside with a lovely view of the abbey. Homemade pizzas are lovely aswell.

Called in after a long walk, tried a few different lagers and a home made pizza made in their big oven, lovely place, friendly, helpful staff and an overall great experience. 👍😁🍻🍕

Visited with elderly mother. Was very busy but we did find a table luckily. Great choice of beers and the pizza smelled lovely. Got bottles to take home for hubby too. Was lovely to see all the dogs welcomed.

I love traditional beer brewed with care and passion .. queued up to get gas .. bottled beer .. not impressed .. long queues .. reallt not worth it..

Very nice beers and pizzas but the venue is very basic inside . Uncomfortable keg barrel seating with dangerous loose seats and silly inside tables made of graffiti covered slatted pallets that are just perfect for your glass or bottle to tipple over in the gaps between the slats .

Our favourite place for a drink in Whitby, totally worth the walk up. Love the new bar and warm indoor seating area. The pizzas are to die for! Anytime of year it’s a wonderful place with lovely staff and delicious ales.

Went in on Christmas Eve, so it was rammed. Had to sit outside on a rather blustery day. Did offer an amazing view of the clouds over the Abbey though! Perfect pint of Jet Black. Guinness WISHES it was this good. Will come back when quieter as the pizzas looked amazing. I'd imagine the beer garden is perfect in summer months too.

We visited whilst the craft fair was on. There were stalls and live music on at the brewery tap. Very good beer and there is an outside area with benches. Seating inside as well. Parking is on the car park for Whitby abbey which is only 5 minute walk. Free parking Nov - March but charges apply outside this period.

Very nice place to have a beer 🍻. Bought a few bottles to take home. Enjoyed them enough to order some more online. Ordered Jet Black, and IPA. Both excellent beer's.

Best cask in Whitby, and maybe the surrounding area too. Fantastic selection from easy lightweight pales to heavier stouts. Pizza well made and great value. Gigs on Saturdays in a spacious venue, what’s not to love? Can’t wait to come back again.

Superb little pub with excellent beer brewed ont' premises. Great atmosphere with seating inside and out. Limited grub available, mainly pizza cooked on site.

Love this place....You work up a thirst on the 199 steps up to the Abbey first and your reward at the top is this place. Lovely to sit outside with a pint and have the Abbey as your back drop. Great atmosphere, if you go to Whitby, you need to call in here.

This is a lovely place to stop off after visiting the Abbey. Great beer, and even better pizza. Although there is limited seating inside, even just taking the pizza to-go is worth it. Couldn’t ask for a better lunch spot!

I absolutely love this place it’s my reward for walking up the 199 steps. I usually go for the darker beers so like the Jet Black or Black Death Gothic Stout. On my recent visit I enjoyed the Autumn special aptly named the John Barleycorn’s Blood which is a red ale. It’s a stunning location and always find the staff provide a friendly service. Well worth the walk up!

Cool building, amazing location and lovely atmosphere. Just a shame the beer comes second to the merch. ‘Real Ale’ served at its own brewery on gas?? And disguised as a hand-pull when in reality it is all on gas, very disappointing. Beer wasn’t good, but I guess it is fine if you’re just here for the atmosphere. There is a lot of potential for this place, just a shame about the beer

Popped in for a beer and pizza on a whim. Personally the beer wasn't particularly to my liking. Pizza was OK but not outstanding in any way though the lad working the oven had a very cheery smile. Place seems to be a big hit with the majority of it's patrons however it was nothing special in my opinion.

Really enjoyed the atmosphere here. Had a fun couple of hours. Couple of beers and scampi fries and views of the sunset over the bay.

Loved this place! Great draught, good entertainment and a good atmosphere. Set off by the backdrop of the abbey. Bar staff were friendly too and happy to chat. Will definitely be back.

Brilliant place to visit. Really worth stopping by for pizza and/or beer after climbing the 199 steps and taking in the views. Also, a great place to see the abbey from the outside. The atmosphere was very pleasant and not too protengious.

Worth the walk up the 199 steps although we had to sit outside as inside was full. Good beer and efficient service. I bet it's glorious in kinder weather.

Bit of a climb to get there but worth the journey (though you can also drive up). Beer was good and the view from our table of the Abbey was stunning. Shame they had run out of the Black Plague beer 6.66%! Perhaps we'll get to try it next time.

The perfect place to stop for refreshments after climbing the ‘199 Steps’. Decent selection of cask ales, an impressive pizza oven (although we didn’t eat), with a great outdoor seating area overlooking the Abbey ruins. There is a small gift shop area adjacent to the bar and fairly basic seating indoors. The toilets are in a separate block, but are more like porter-loos and could be improved, as you can wash your hands inside the cubicle but only dry them outside. I imagine that this place gets very busy in peak season but is definitely worth a visit.
