Great value, home cooked food, not straight out of a microwave bag like so many pubs in the area. Staff are also lovely. Still cash only and we needed to book to get a space in the beer garden as we had a dog with us.

Thank you for excellent hospitality early 2020. We went off our way a bit on a walk, arriving here just as it got dark and we couldn't safely walk back to our car. The staff were very helpful and arranged for a taxi to take us back to our car. We enjoyed a drink by the log fires and look forward to returning again when we can relax a bit and learn how to read a map!

(Forgive the late review) We went here for a lovely meal on the 25th September 2020 and we couldn’t fault it. Staff were lovely, food was great, and we were treated to a nice bit of history about the place by a gentleman that I think was the landlord. Lovely experience and we’ll be happy to go back once restrictions have eased . 😊

If I could rate this place any lower I would. Terrible. No phones allowed. It's in the middle of nowhere but they don't even accept cards so try buying a drink if you don't happen to have enough cash. This is no service to anyone, best if it just simply shuts. To top it all off, I was told no phones allowed even though people at the bar were on their phones. Seems to be a policy that's applied only to "ousiders". Avoid at all costs.

An old-fashioned pub and all the better for it. It's split across several rooms so one can usually find a quiet corner if required. Beer by Sam Smiths which is okay for the most part and made better by the very reasonable prices.

Friendly staff. Clean and well kept. Good food which even caters for vegans! Nice selection of local non-commercial craft beers on draft - even an organic larger (Samuel Smith)!. A pub designed with socialising in mind, mobile-phone free zone, complimentary board games provided. The pub gives an honorary tradition to General George Smith Patton (1885-1945) who frequented the Whipping Stock and as paid a full years subscription for a flower arrangement on the table where he used to sit. A worthy visit if your in the area.

Really nice old pub, not a massive selection of beers, but good enough. The reason they lost the fist star is because the food was incredibly slow, it was a Friday lunch so it shouldn't be a surprise to them that there will be a high food demand. The second star was lost because they don't take card, it's just not acceptable for any business to be cash only, I payed on card for pick and mix the other day! Small changes to get 5 stars!

The only reason I have given this place any stars is because the beer was good and reasonably priced. But how can a modern pub restaurant be run on a cash only basis? The main man behind the bar whom I took to be the landlord had a miserable attitude and seemed to be unfamiliar with the computerised ordering system. When our main course came about 1 hour after we had ordered it, the pork my wife had ordered was like the sliced meat from a supermarket. The "mashed potato" we both had appeared to be from a packet mix and both our meals were cold. We could not eat it so I asked for a refund. The landlord started to argue and offered me a part refund because we had eaten our starters. I said that because of the inconvenience and the fact that I was still hungry he should refund the whole amount. He begrudgingly gave me what I think was the full amount and we left and went home and a had a fish and chips takeaway. I do not usually complain in restaurants or pubs, but I felt that I was justified this time because the whole experience was so awful. We will not be back.

This pub is a real find! The location is a little out of the way but great for walkers, dog walkers and those travelling in a car. There's a big car park and big beer garden. Outside and inside the pub looks like a high end pub, exceptionally clean, very warm and welcoming with the real log fires. What really shocked us was the prices! its so cheap its amazing! Drinks choices are limited to the brewery's own brand and there was only one red wine to choose from but it was nice. 3 drinks and change from £10! The staff at the pub are lovely and you can tell they work really hard and really go out of their way on a quiet evening to get to know those sat at the bar. We didn't eat there but their is a basic menu and the food did look good. Would definitely return. Ray and Helen are brilliant!

Welcoming staff, good prices and great old fashioned country pub atmosphere. Been coming here once a week for twenty years to meet friends. Drink prices are low and the joke is to send someone from London to buy a round of drinks and see how they handle the low prices. I'm not sure if it's always this bad. We came for a Sunday roast. Took over half an hour to get served and when we did the girl that took our order said someone else needed to help with it then just never came back..we had to go find someone in the end to take our order. The food came in under 5 minutes which I'm sure is not a good sign ! The potatoes oozed grease when you bit into them. The greens had barely been cooked. A nearly cracked a tooth on the parsnips. The stuffing never came so we had to ask for it. It was cold and rock hard when it did come. Will never come here again and would recommend no one else does if you don't want to waste your money. Shame because the pub itself is lovely.
