Excellent experience! It was our first day visiting and our hotel recommended we try this place for lunch. The service was excellent, and everything we ordered was far above our expectations! We tried the haggis croquettes, calamari, vegetable goan curry, and fish & chips! The toffee pudding was delicious, and we ordered Chantilly cream to go with it. Highly recommend. Atmosphere 12/10

Found this lovely place by accident, what a happy accident! My wife and I absolutely loved it. Food was wonderful, wine flights were tremendous, and service was amazing. I was pretty much a regular at Whighams a few years ago but Covid seemed to change many people’s habits. I was back there last night for the first time in a while and I there was a real ’buzz’ back in the place which was great to see. Again, I had not eaten there from ages and the food was outstanding - the prawn linguini, which I had as a starter, was exceptional and the burger with chips was just excellent. Great to have an old favourite back on my ‘go to’ list.

We booked this restaurant because they promote themselves as a wine cellar with tasty wine recomandations. Unfortunately, that is also why I have to leave 2 stars. The wines are not worth the money. The food, we had the salmon, the calamari and both the fish and chips, was nice. We asked for a wine to combine with the food and we were recommended a tasting of 4 white wines. These 4 white wines were not very different from each other in terms of taste. All lighter, fresh wines with little explanation from a cart. The server didn’t say anything about them. a little disappointed, we ordered a full, buttery and round wine to go with the fish and chips. The woman said she knew something, without saying which wine or grape it might be. She did ask how big of a glass we wanted, which is a very strange question when ordering a wine glass. We ordered the large one and a little later the woman came back with two slightly full glasses. No wine bottle, no explanation, no question whether the wine is good, nothing you expect at a "wine cellar". The wine was also not full, buttery or round. With that, the food arrived in no time, which gives you the feeling of being in a food shack like McDonalds. Within an hour we where outside. How this place can promote itself as a wine restaurant is crazy. It is not at all worth the money, we could have just eaten at McDonalds.

Having been very excited to try Whighams after looking at the numerous recommendations online, I can only question how they were obtained. Making a booking was simple enough, and the initial warm reception was pleasant enough however it went downhill from there. After being seated we were advised that the mussels and catch of the day were unavailable due to demand- fair enough. When asked to order we requested a glass of sparkling wine and another non alcoholic drink, as well as 6 oysters and some olives. The drinks arrived shortly after along with some water. We ordered linguine and venison bourguignon as main courses when the drinks arrived. Around 5 minutes later the mains arrived. We believed that maybe the oysters and olives may be served after the mains for some reason. They never did. After waiting for someone to ask if we wished to have the bill to no avail, we decided to approach the bar to pay. The food was fine, however the complete disregard for accurately taking our order and providing what was requested would put me off returning nor recommending this restaurant. Venture to other more reputable and reliable restaurants instead where your money is actually valued.

For New Year’s Eve 2023, we were a party of seven who had traveled quite some distance to be together: two from Sweden, two from Switzerland, one from Paraguay, and ourselves from the U.S. We were all able to meet in Edinburgh for just 36 hours, and our experience with Whighams made our visit an absolute delight. The restaurant offered a five-course meal with wine pairings. Every dish was delicious, and we enjoyed the wine pairings very much. We were especially appreciative of the fact that they did not have a second seating. It was an act of generosity to have one seating, at a leisurely pace, with the option to stay until midnight (which we very nearly did). We truly appreciated the warm and friendly service, the cozy atmosphere, the amazing food, and the gift of time to ring in the new year with dear friends from far away. Highly recommended!

Staff are very attentive, nice and good. The ambience in the new bit is ok but the lighting is far too bright for a cellar bar cum restaurant. The fish and chips were good and bad. The good bit was the batter and freshness. However the fish was on the smallish side and there were an embarrassing number of chips on the plate (lack of!) I'm sure they had samphire grass last time?! The sticky toffee pudding was very poor.

Having had a fabulous night out here back in June I met up with friends last night before going to a show in the festival. While the food was good, the service was disappointing. Waitress kept moaning that she had been working since 12 ( it was only 6.30). Felt our meal was quite rushed, could this be they needed the table despite us having booked. When we asked for the bill she then returned to the table with the bill and just threw it onto the table. Maybe it was an off night due to it being busy with the festival being on, but still manners cost nothing. When the festival is over and the visitors to the city have gone it's the locals that will support the business. Will I go back not sure yet.

A nice and lively bar right in the heart of Edinburgh city centre, just steps from Princes Street! Descending from street level, you’ll find yourself in this unusual yet elegant bar, with neat little subterranean niches to one side, and the main bar opening up to the right. The niches are great for a more private drink, with padded semicircular seating and table in the centre. Anyone over about 5ft 6in tall we want to be aware that the entry is low, so mind your head on! A nice selection of beers and other beverages are on offer, along with a nice food menu to sate your hunger.

A lovely hidden gem in terms of atmosphere and location, really beautiful place and a gorg small outside seating area. Half of our meals let us down unfortunately, my linguine was a bit tasteless and the curry could have been better. The rest was fine. Mussels and fries were great! A shame about the wine - all the staff’s suggestions were really bad for the taste and quality, especially compared to the price - house wine £26 per bottle and it wasn’t better than a £5 bottle at Lidl - which we were very surprised about being a wine bar but I’m sure if you went with your own preference it would be better. The service was inattentive - we had very long periods of waiting for attention for drinks and the bill and actually had to just go to the bar each time to get service which was fine for us to do but not good dining experience at all - we all manage hospitality and know this shouldn’t be the case. Maybe better organisation in terms of sections? On the other hand the staff were all lovely when we did eventually get service. Thank you for our night

We have dined at Timberyard before and since the Michelin star accolade. Our experience on Saturday was very disappointing and felt very different to previous visits. What’s happened?? On no imagination is this a Michelin star restaurant: Red wine was freezing cold. The waiter ran it under to hot hap when we mentioned it was freezing cold. Classy? We asked what the wine grape was..the waiter pointed to the name of the wine estate on the bottle label…oops!! The meal was mostly bread. Bead before the meal. Bread with the starter. Not much else to follow. Portions were very small. The place felt cold. No atmosphere. The service was terrible. Waiters clearing our plates before we had finished. Felt very rushed and very intrusive. Waiters were walking up and down looking to clear plates. We were gifted a tea bag each on or way out as a special gift. Insult to injury! £230 for lunch for 2. Won’t be returning.
