Wheleans is a weird place. You could have an awesome time, or a terrible one. There is no in-between. The live music is great! When it is busy the atmosphere is great! Open until super late! Sometimes it is absolutely dead for no reason, but hey-ho. Sadly when the vibes are great, the service is terrible. Honestly, the service is almost as bad as Cornerstone. Just because of the slow service and rude staff this rating takes a hit. Genuinely it is a good time (sometimes).

It's a fantastic pub managed by the finest barmaid I have ever met. Madie is a genuine, efficient, smart, and striking young lady. Her service and company were a pleasure on a wet October evening. Whelan's located a moment's walk from Kingston Train Station is all I could wish for in a traditional Irish pub. Warm, tidy, and welcoming with a vast range of beverages to quench every guest's thirst. The sport was shown on multiple large screens. I will return as soon as I can. Thank you, Madie and your manager for the lovely evening. Shane.

A really nice pub with excellent staff who were friendly and helpful all night, and even helped the band loading in and out for their gig - not carrying, but manning the doors and holding them open - very thoughtful. TV screens abound inside, so if rugby, horse racing, hurling or other sport is playing, you're likely to be unable to escape seeing it, but also used to show the band when there's one playing, which is handy. A good and lively crowd (apart from a group of errant ladies who decided to climb on stage during the band's break and without asking "have a go" on their instruments; absolutely out of order privileged driunken sots). After the band there was a DJ till 03.00. Nice layout, compact & cosy, toilets a little aromatic and could do with some cleaning and odour treatment. Recommended for a fun night out. Parking available in a nearby car park (not on the nearby streets)> Wheelchair accessibility an issue owing to the steps to get in.

Been coming off & on for years.Always a gr8 pint of Guinness. Nice staff & management although continually changing. Visited for early evening pint on my birthday 16/08/2024. Was the only customer in there & the barmaid seemed disappointed that she had to serve me before she could go out for a cigarette to the front entrance. I explained that it was my birthday & that I traditionally come in on that day for a pint & some food. She said "We don't have a kitchen" as if I was asking for something outrageous! Drank my pint & when I went up for the second one I said with absolutely no arrogance "Same again" for her to retort "I don't remember what you had" this despite me being the only customer. The pint was filled awfully, with no care at all......almost as a subtle insult to my asking for food, delaying the cigarette break & requesting the "same again" drink. Decided to cut my losses & get out of there but whilst drinking the pint a manager or supervisor appeared on the scene & started bantering/flirting with the barmaid who joined him outside the bar. I am used of industrial language & quite like it but this was so loud & expletive laden that I gulped down the last of my drink. As I was leaving the small, authoritive manager(?) was still swearing & trying to impress the barmaid with boasts of owning a house in Britain & Ireland. Don't think she was too impressed though & had her cigarettes at the ready for another visit outside. Decided that this pub no longer cares for their customers or value them & won't be visiting again Rather forebodingly every time I have gone in here over the past year, the place has been virtually deserted with different staff every time. It wouldn't surprise me that the reason for the huge drop in standards is because it shall be up for sale in the future & there seems to be no wish to gain customers or provide a good customer experience

My friend, I and nearly everyone else in the pub (there were only 8 of us in total and now you are going to find out why) were watching the Wimbledon Tennis final, finely poised in the tie break at 3-1 in the third set at 16.00 on Sunday 160723, when the barmaid unceremoniously switched the rugby on (which nobody wanted to watch). They only have one operational satellite box (as the other two haven't been working for months) so goodbye tennis.p When I asked the barmaid she said she was only following Tony the operations managers decision (based in another Wheelans pub and detached from reality). She checked with him and he upheld his decision. The oak are very happy with Tony's decision because from today it's mine and my mates new local. Unfortunately I am not allowed to give zero stars. So one will have to suffice Austin how do you feel about loosing £8,500 revenue per year. The barmaid checked with the bar mannager (hands on) Mick for a decision but he wasn't available for comment. So my fellow beer drinkers and sports lovers alike, please be aware, if you want to know, whether a sports event will be shown to the end in Wheelans Kingston, dont ask the bar manager (hands on) Mick, instead I suggest you check with Tony the operations manager, whose decision making is on a par with Rishi Sunak's cabinet. As he may have other plans. Obituary Hands on Mick has by popular demand left the premises. Wednesday 14th March Austin; on hearing that "hands on" had left I decided to give your pub another chance to find he had been replaced by "jobsworth". I understand that your no hats rule is to stop people wearing hoodies and other items which disguises customers faces, following a terrible incident in your pub. Jobsworth asked me to remove my cap (which only covers my hair not my face). I pointed this out but he said rules are rules. The point is it didn't cover my face at all. Our dilemma here is that as a 67 law abiding OAP I will not use any establishment that tells me how I should dress. I left the pub as soon as I finished my drink and went to my local where respectable personal attire is not questioned. My grandfather who passed away 39 years ago was cheeky and as a child always made me wear a cap whilst we watched Cheltenham on itv headed by Brough Scott, because I always made fun of his flat caps. So I was wearing the cap in my grandfathers honour. It's a good job you weren't in business in 1571, when in order to stimulate trade in the woolen industry Parliament passed legislation whereby all males over 6 years of age had to wear a flat woolen cap on Sundays. Imagine Jobsworth's face as his entire male client base plus himself were arrested for not weaing a cap. But officer its a "pub rule" he probably would have heard to have been said as he was arrested.

The overwhelming majority of the 1 Star Reviews are from before the current manager, John, took over. In the short time since John has been in charge not only has the quality and care gone into maintaining the beer improved drastically, but he also understands one of the most fundamental things for a pub = The Atmosphere. The Atmosphere in Whelan's has gone from unwelcoming and cold, to outstanding under the new management. From the greeting at the door, the friendly staff, and the music - this pub has got it spot on. No matter what time of day (or night) you go in you'll always be welcomed warmly and find yourself in a very friendly pub! With so many remarkable improvements in such a short period of time, i thoroughly look forward to seeing what is in store, but this is now my go-to pub without a doubt. Do your self a favour, if you've had a bad experience in the past, please give Whelans another try! You won't be disappointed.

Good pub looking with good atmosphere & sports on television and fair a price to quality ratio when it comes to food. Very good pint of Guinness. Lager tasted bad. Sour taste.
