Working away from home in an area that had less than a stellar reputation finding Whelans was a godsend. A village pub atmosphere with super friendly staff in the middle of town! Came here every night I was in Croydon. The food deals are fantastic, steak Tuesday especially, 12.50 for a decent steak chips and trimmings. The guys behind the bar were amazing, accommodating and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble and the service truly impeccable. You'd be hard pressed to find a pub as warm and friendly in any town. Would highly recommend stopping in. They have sport and quizzes regularly and a real home from home feel. Thank you Whelans hope to visit again soon

Went to a retirement party found it a pleasant pub with good beer and service nice buffet laid on.

After seeing some good reviews about the burgers I decided to come and try it for my self. The burger is really amazing, one of the best burgers I've had, the atmosphere is great and service is fast and polite. Will definitely be back to try other items from the menu.

Whelan' in Croydon, went there for work's do, great atmosphere, shared a buffet which was plentiful and tasty, piped music was great, DJ was better, played some cracking tunes, all up dancing. Staff were extremely professional and friendly, recommend that as a venue

I was here for a family funeral wake. I haven't been to this pub for a while since moving. It was clean, food provided was of usual fare for wakes and fresh. A mix of hot and cold. We had the back end of the pub. Service was excellent and everything was set out ready. It's a great pub with little nooks to get away from the crowds. I used the pay and display parking bays by whitgift school £6 for 2 hours. There are parking spots elsewhere but not sure of ease and availability of these with a much shorter time.

The best calamari I've ever eaten, and the place is very nice.

Fantastic establishment, so much going on down here. Quiz not on a Thursday which is a good crack, normally fantastic music on a Friday or Saturday prices go up slightly on the drinks after 9pm on these nights but with the value for entertainment it’s justifiable. Never had any bad food in here and is good value for the money, Mac and cheese is on point👌🏻. Staff always friendly, even on busy nights like last night with the Ireland rugby game on there was no long waits. Good selection of sports on, if it’s not on, ask and they put it on for you with commentary. Brilliant idea of showing the commentary at the back part of the pub on quieter days as to not force it on the rest of the customers. Have had many social nights out here along with work nights. Always a good night. Keep up the good work and look to sign Randy 😉

Prices increase after 9pm. Came for rugby world cup, they turned the commentary off for a DJ playing music to no-one at 100+ decibels. Staff apologised, management couldn't care Edit to their faux apology: Why not just call it a gouge and be done with it, how did you pay for all these before without increasing the prices, (as if 6 quid a beer is enough). I will actively get people to stop going to this pub

Great pub. Fantastic management and amazing staff, clean and quick and friendly, and the food is delicious and well priced too. Can't go wrong 👍🏼I'm down there for a Sunday lunch in a minute 😉

Food wasn't bad (although, its a shame they've stopped selling Thai food and it's just burgers now), and the staff were OK if not all that attentive. But the reason for the one star review is the ridiculous pricing strategy they have. We bought a round of drinks at 7:30pm on a Friday night, then an hour later, the round had gone up by a pound. An hour later, the round went up by another pound! Apparently the till does this automatically as the night goes on!!! I won't be back.

A well decorated and cosy place. Always clean. Staff are friendly. Only drank in there during the day . Gonna try their food, have had good reviews from friends and family. Just popped in for a quick bite to eat whilst out shopping in Croydon . Loaded fries with the toppings of the nachos dish. Heaven in a bowl. Whoop whoop. New menu out and what a beautiful selection. Peoples get yourself down there. Keep forgetting to take pictures of food as start eating then realise🤪🤪🤪. So go and see for your selves. Food never fails my expectations.

I've not been in this establishment for a little while but I fully recommend coming into here for the Steak. A well cooked good bit of sirloin. Really enjoyed the service aswell!! Will be recommending

I have had some great Sunday roasts in here... Really good, and just now had the Tuesday sirloin steak. Fantastic. Lovely and tender and great flavour, tastes like it was on a BBQ And lovely staff too.

Really good pub. Plenty of different sports, great food, good beer and really good service. I highly recommend a visit. I have updated this as the kitchen has just been changed. I haven't eaten the new food yet but I am sitting here dribbling at the smells. Update - the food is GLORIOUS. Still the best pub locally and well worth a visit

Third reviews a charm! After a break from coming here, I returned with my partner and friend to our lovely, welcoming friend Megan behind the bar. I then also received an apology from the manager who was genuinely upset as last time I was here, I was mistaken from another patron and told to leave. He kindly offered us a round as an apology. Mistaken can happen and also be rectified. Pleased to add Whelans back on our list of locals as love taking family and friends here when they visit. Next is to try the food, it looks good and have gotten major food envy! Look forward to future visits!

Visited earlier today for dinner with the family - the pub is lovely - really great vibe the footie was playing so it was lovely and atmospheric but not overcrowded. The food was lovely HOWEVER I ordered a burger and when I saw the staff member deliver a small plate with just a burger I was extremely confused - no chips. According to staff members chips are not included in a £9.50 burger and nothing stated when ordered at bar nor is it it stated on the menu which is a bit annoying as it’s a pub and a burger as standard always comes with chips in every pub you visit so if they’re not serving chips with the burger especially for £9.50 it’s really the venue’s responsibility to put a disclaimer message on the menu or have the staff perhaps ask “would you like chips with that?” The burger itself was amazing though so no complaints about the food itself

Quiet when visited. Food and staff were excellent

Popped in for a Guiness and stayed for Sunday roast. A standard Sunday roast topped with a Yorkshire pudding, with qood portions. Whelans is a good pub. The guiness was well cold. Sport features highly with a good number of TV screens throughout the pub. I will return shortly.

A hidden gem. Surprised at how big this pub was. Busy when we went early Saturday evening. Didn't eat but menu looked good. Only gripe was that football commentary was so loud we couldn't hear ourselves speak. Seated in a booth it would have been nice if we could have turned speaker down. Would definitely go back for another go though.

Excellent roast dinner. Everything cooked to perfection. I had the beef and the missus had the chicken. Both were beautiful. Great portions, great service. Can’t fault it tbh. A slightly bigger portion and you would’ve got 5 ⭐️. Either way I left feeling full and satisfied.

Both the Roast beef and roast chicken dishes are well cooked, and you get ample portions, highly recommend. Great place to eat Sunday lunch. They serve a great pint of Guinness.

First time visiting this pub on a Saturday night. Good atmosphere, great for sports as there are loads of screens and the staff were friendly.

Certain staff a bit odd, stiff and pompous. Toilet broken Bar area clean Didn't eat so can't comment on the food. Hard to find parking

Went there to watch the game Poland vs France and ordered chips with melted cheese and mini slices or meat. I would also recommend plain chips.

Told me they wanted a chat outside AFTER I bought a drink and told me not tonight. Apparently it's a regular thing here from the comments I can see, steer clear.

Probably the worst pub in the UK. Terrible bar and kitchen. The staff were more interested in the the headwear policy than serving drinks. Manger to blame for terrible service and very rude attitude. Bette places nearby. Don’t bother

Recently came to the pub and as I was waiting to buy my very first round of drinks the bouncer asked if he could speak to me outside once I'm done ordering. I said no problem, was served and bought a round costing £35.90. Went straight outside to see the bouncer where he told me "not tonight." They said no refunds so have stolen from me. I spoke to people at my work today and THREE other blokes have the same story! DO NOT go here. They are THIEVES! One thing to not let people in but they are notorious for letting people order drinks followed by a quick conversation and a robbery.

Received a warm welcome from Naima this week at this venue. Very clean and the decor and different furnishings were very nice. I was unsure about having Thai in a pub environment but the prawn pad thai was absolutely delicious and very filling also great value at around £10. Me and my friends felt very comfortable and the lovely Naima who was so helpful and kind would definitely encourage a return, great asset to your company, see you soon 😊

Busy little place will return again

Best Sunday roast in Town, great tasting food, generous portions, and amazing value for money. In the week the Thai menu is first class, same quality food a a Thai restaurant cooked by an award winning Thai chef. Highly recommended.

A regular spot for me for a cheeky pint of Guinness on the way home but it’s very hit and miss in terms of quality. Today was a good day (7/10) despite the logo in the foam 😃

My first visit. Wasn't busy. Very clean including the loos and the lady behind the bar was friendly, welcoming and chatty but also attentive to the arrival of other customers. Had a nice pint of Guinness and a yellow curry from the Thai food menu. It was superb, spiced to perfection. There is plenty to work through so future visits are planned. Bangkok comes to South Croydon. Altogether, very impressed with my whole experience.

The menu is so good, really fresh authentic Thai food. Also options for burgers and traditional pub food which looked great too! The prices are also very reasonable. £8.50 for the curries (including rice) It’s a must! 10/10 ps - lovely staff :)

Brilliant Irish pub Thai menu is fantastic £8.50 for a beef Chow mein Great Guinness asked would they show the ulster and connacht rugby match and they turned it on for me brilliant pub highly recommended 10/10

Really nice Irish Pub. The young bar lass was very polite. I was wearing a hat and asked me nicely to remove it due to rule. I bought loads of Tatos crisp to take home. Not many places around like this establishment. Can't wait for the new food menu.

Went here for St Paddy's - cracking atmosphere & the live band was good fun! Knocked a star off because the bouncer was a bit weird. He kept saying the bar was full when it blatantly wasn't... Eventually managed to convince him to let us in.
