Wetherby Whaler in Leeds

We had a lovely meal on Saturday evening. A party of nine for my husbands 73rd birthday. He sadly has terminal cancer and wanted some decent fish and chips whilst he still could. They did not disappoint, the haddock was chunky with crispy brown batter. We brought a cake with us and the staff supplied a knife and cream. They didn’t charge platage like some restaurants do. Very attentive and pleasant staff. We sat near the lovely old gentleman who played so many great tunes on the piano, all without sheet music. Shame we were the only ones who clapped at his musical expertise.

I went here with my family very poor service the staff is rude and the food is very average and very over priced I would not recommend this place to no one .I highly recommend mergatroydes which is by far better quality prices and service

Asked for a fish butty. Given a piece of fish and a bread roll that came in a plastic bag. The fish was poor quality tasted frozen and defrosted it was chewy. Batter was poor and it was extremely greasy. Usually use Pudsey branch which is good. This is expensive and poor quality

Not the best of venues for the brand. Compared to the Wakefield one and Wetherby branch this one is not as nice inside it’s very dated. The food wasn’t the best either with the chips being under cooked and the fish tasting more fishier than what a fresh piece of fish does and the bread was going stale. I am a big fan of this fish shop at the other two branches but this one wasn’t as good.

Delectable food, really posh, great piano playing in the background, you NEED to go here, but it is quite expensive.

Take away Fish and chips are now £9 Today, I thought I'd get something cheaper, pie and chips! Very small microwaved pie and small chips in a medium-sized box. When you get fish and chips you get a layer of chips and fish on top. When I got my pie a portion was put on one side and when complained they said that's how it comes. I feel taken advantage of because I'd paid up front. I'm not sure I'll be coming back here again. There are plenty of other chippy's nearby.

Consistently great food and service for decades. Formerly the iconic Harry Ramsden’s that was once the largest fish and chip restaurant in the world. Still great despite the change of name and glad it still has live music to add to the atmosphere. Food - fish and chips of course - was excellent and great value, but there is lots more on the menu if you want it. Dining-in is recommended but there’s a takeaway too and outdoor seating, plus plenty of parking.

Fantastic fish and chips. Generous portions. Strangely, it feels the restaurant needs more takes as everything is spaced out!

Food here is amazing, I could hardly breathe after eating though my stomach was so full. This is a very busy place so I recommend booking early. Staff still take the time to welcome and pander to your every need. Very lovely and very professional staff. If you love fish and chips this is possibly the best place to eat them. Other variations of food also sold here.

First time I've been here in over 20 years as it is not local to where I live.but me and my cousin decided to give it a try on 5/04/25 for teatime as eat in customers . It was fairly quiet so got a table straight away and was not rushed with ordering. There was a good choice .my cousin got a pensioner special soup ,fish and chips.and ice cream .I got large haddock.and ginger sponge and custard. Everything was perfect for both of us ( I'm normally judgemental been an ex chef)but the things I found were just my preference not things wrong. Not enough ginger in the sponge but was still nice. Perfect on everything only thing I would possibly do differently is giving bread and butter with the meal instead of having to ask and pay separately for it. But will definitely return

Fish and chips were amazing as well as the atmosphere and staff. Shoutout to Rosella who served us, incredibly friendly and accommodating.

Always great food you can order your fish and chips in advance using the app or the website. My wife likes fish and chips fried oil so we do this in advance staff always really friendly quick service good food.

Was quiet Monday evening tea time. Staff attentive as always. Never disappoints.

Great place for fish and chips (no pun intended, usually haddock). Visiting Northern family my son's first visit who thought it was amazing... chandeliers and live pianist (grand piano). Excellent crispy fish batter and decent chips. Good friendly service too. Not cheap but worth it now and then.

You might be able to find fish and chips as good as Wetherby Whaler, but you won't find better.

I asked for a fish butty and was given a fish and a bread roll in a plastic bag. It was buttered and fresh but not really the fish butty that I had asked for. I mentioned it to the person who served me to be told. "That's just how we do it " Batter wasn't nice and I will not be going again.

we are French and like every time we visit our friends in Menston we take the time to come and treat ourselves to the best fish and chips in the region 😉👍

I used to come here for my birthday when it was Harry Ramsdens. Really pleased to see the Wetherby Whaler had kept the atmosphere and traditions going. Opted for the whale 🐋 size fish. It was delicious, well cooked and served with a generous portion of chips and a small dish of beans. I will certainly be returning.

We have eaten in the restaurant and used the takeaway several times. The fish in particular is consistently good quality and portions are a decent size. Always enjoyable

We visited last night and were greeted by a lovely lady called Rossella. She was absolutely the best part of our night as she was super attentive to our little boy and nothing was too much trouble. The meal was also really tasty! 😊

Ordered at approximately 16.40. The app said it’d be ready for 17.00. I waited for the app to say Ready to collect, I informed the staff member. They hadn’t started preparing the order. I had to wait another 15 minutes. Absolutely pointless ordering online, ready to collect. Everyone who came in got their order before the online orders. No apology of it being Kate. What a waste of time.

Must have been end of a busy shift but customer service lacking. We have visited a number of fish and chip restaurants ! in the area, and found it hard to find a place where both the fish and chips were both cooked properly i.e it is either the fish which was okay and chips poor or vice versa. This place is no exception .Having reeled back in horror at the restaurant prices we decided to go for slightly cheaper takeaway. The fish inside the batter was small and the chips were cold (and way too many chip ends ). The server was surly in his demeanour . Very average .

Always good.place is beautiful. Try it doubt you will be disappointed.

Wasn't the best Fish and chips, felt they were cooked in the oven not in a fryer, both my kids didn't eat their chips, kids not eating chips!!!

Driver was polite and friendly, he needed code number which I could not seem to get up, and never needed it before on deliveries, but good service.

Undoubtedly the best fish and chips EVER! A guy playing the piano. Crystal chandeliers. What more could you want?

Came across this place out of luck. Amazing fish and chips at a very reasonable price. Place was nice as well and staff were friendly enough. Would return again if I'm ever in the area.

We get a similar order each week from wetherby whaler. This week the food was not hot, just warm. Not great. According to app, food was ready well before driver at restaurant. This seems to be a developing trend. Perhaps not enough drivers or drivers and restaurant don’t seem to want to work together. Disappointed

Our waitress was very helpful and attentive during Friday evening service. We also had a pianist playing lovely music while we enjoyed our fish n chips and scampi.

The best fish chips in the UK. Excellent fish and perfect breading. Excellent service thanks also to the Italian Rossella with whom we chatted pleasantly. I will recommend it to anyone who is in the area. Compliments!

The food was just chucked at us. They lady didn't bother asking if we need cutlery or sauces. She didn't even bother asking if we want salt and vinger. I had to ask her if she put salt and vinger on whilst she was talking to her friend. I had to take my food out of the bags awkwardly and get some salt and vinger on my fish and chips. I have seen that she has asked all other other customers if they needed cutlery and sauces and she had put salt and vinger on for them her self. I'm just thinking is it the fact that i was the only one wearing a hijab. It was just really cold service. Never going there again. First and last time. The food wasn't event that great. But the sprinkles of racism mad it worse.

Was hard at work in the sun and I could think of nothing better than some fish and chips so had to make the trip whilst I was in the area. Went and got myself the standard Fish and Chips with curry sauce which I can’t lie was even better eating outside in the sun, literally have no complaint and will definitely be back🤤

I've been a regular customer of this restaurant for years and find the service to be consistently friendly, the food to be of good quality and the environment to be lovely. Particularly when the piano player is on some evenings. The portions are definitely not huge and the prices sure have jumped in recent years but I appreciate the costs of running a restaurant such as this aren't exactly low. Well worth a visit as a treat.

Travelled 21,435km to come here for fish, chips and curry sauce. Simply, no better place to go on the planet. I'd recommend the early evening sittings on the weekend when the pianist is playing.

Poor fish with strange thick batter .Dirty outside needs a good clean up benches need replacing or painting

Was just reading the reviews. A person just put that they are using beef dripping and not vegetable oil. I'm a nutritionist and it's my job to know about oils and fats. Beef dripping is incredibly good for you, it's the vegetable oils that are EXTREMELY bad for you!. Seed oils which is vegetable oil is the problem with a lot of peoples health!!!! It's the extraction (using solvents etc) process they use to de-gummy the oils and fats after they have been extracted (as they are gel like). Maybe you should do your home work before posting an awful scathing review like that. Fool!

These people appear to think that customers should earn the respect of Weatherby Whaler rather than vice versa. They don't offer frying in healthy vegetable oil, instead they fry in so called beef dripping which is seriously unhealthy. The "beef dripping belt" runs from approx Sheffield to Newcastle and it is where all the UK slaughterhouses dispose of their unwanted (by the rest of the country) and abominable slurry of mixed pig fat, sheep fat and cow fat.

Always, at each Wetherby Whaler we have visited, an enjoyable experience. Here the pianist was in full flow.

Hi chips were ok , but not sure why the fish batter is crispy but saturated in grease . The batter had soaked up the grease . It was made fresh but the batter was like it had been reheated . Don’t mind paying . But cmon guys sort out your fish

Lovely food, but unfortunately arrived cold

Ordered a take out to eat out and not great to be honest. The batter was very heavy , greasy and the chips dry . Could see the grease bits on the paper box not nice at all.

the dish and chips were piping hot really tasty. just bag of scraps missing but not a problem as there was so many chips couldn't eat everything. Really enjoyable will order from them again

The first time eating, the food was delicious. Two varieties of curry sauce to choose from, very tasty. The restaurant was spacious, nice decor and .echo...staff seemed to disperse once you had eaten. Order at the table, pay at the table? We paid at the desk. Waited too long. Would I go again. Yes. Good food. Good price. 👍

Just called in for gluten free fish & chips , no problem getting it, nice staff decent chippy

The takeaway does not have vegetarian dishes, other than chips and peas.
