Arrived and our pre booked table wasn’t booked - despite the booking being automatically added to my calendar with phone number - address - website - etc but they accommodated us great ok Then no pate en croute as the chef who cooks it was on holiday ! Ordered smoked salmon terrine - served moules fish cakes - sent back and after a short wait smoked salmon terrine arrived Main - lobster Thermidor - good - pork chop swimming in gravy / jus Sides - gratin inedible - overpowering taste of sage and after it was returned to the kitchen the chefs confirmed it was overpowering and would be changed tomorrow - our waiters said she’d never eat it Then the bill came - charged fur the fish cake which we never ordered and the side girls which was inedible and the optional 10% service charge

Fantastic. They’ve nailed that balance of exceptional food quality and cooking but not up itself. We did the pre-theatre and everyone was really happy with their food. Atmosphere is great too. All round spot on.

Booked a table for 12 people months in advance, had family and friends coming from all over the UK, EU and Australia. Got confirmation from the General Manager 3 weeks prior that all was OK, then 2 weeks to go we were told the booking was cancelled because of some other event. Having eaten out at many restaurants around the world for over 30 years in business, this is the first time this has happened to me. I had seen other review bemoaning the management of Kinos, which I chose to ignore. I wish i hadn't - Book at your peril, you have been warned. I cant comment on the food or staff as we didnt get that far.

I've been to several recent events at Kino, two of the "Staycation" series and Pastry Club. Chef Josh is incredible; the food isn't just well presented and playful, it's also packed with flavour. The service is really friendly, lovely atmosphere, great drinks menu. The events, and especially Pastry Club, are very reasonably priced. Eating at Kino isn't a meal, it's an event, it's an evening.

This was our first time in Kino, but won't be the last. We had dinner early evening on a gorgeous summer's night when the England game was also on, so the restaurant was (understandably) pretty empty. However, we kind of liked this, as it felt very relaxed and we weren't rushed at all. Everything on the menu looked so interesting, very unusual flavour combinations, and we were a bit worried if they could pull it off. But pull it off they did, and I can honestly say this is one of the best meals we have ever had in Leeds! The flavours of the dishes worked well, everything was cooked to perfection and the sauces (which are not the easiest thing to get right) were spot on. The only thing we weren't sure about was thyme on the creme caramel, but this is probably just a question of taste. The service was friendly and efficient and the wine list was also excellent. Not the cheapest in Leeds, but neither it should be, for this quality. Highly recommended.

What a fantastic evening! We had the great pleasure in attending the Marco Pierre White food experience at Kino at the weekend. What an experience it was! Everything from the warm friendly atmosphere, the incredible food, perfect wine combinations and insightful words from industry legend MPW who was on top form throughout, stopping to answer questions between courses, and having photos taken at the end was a real treat. Top marks also go to Kino Head chef Josh Whitehead who executed the four courses perfectly. That beef Wellington….! Service all round was excellent, and host Jason Shaw set everything up for what was a very special event. Great value for money too. Highly recommended.

Booked for Saturday at 5.30pm, friendly welcome and staff but service was not very efficient overall. Had to ask numerous times for tap water refills before we got them, the drinks didn’t arrive until after we’d eaten our starter and our desserts arrived only minutes after our main plates were cleared, despite asking for some time. Menu is very limited and given that there was one starter and one dessert not available, not much choice at all. The food we had was good quality but the overall experience leaves us reluctant to recommend or return.

Booked for pre theatre dinner . Three choices for each course but one starter not available. Had mackeral pate for starter , very fresh and delicious . Steak for main course was perfectly cooked and tender . Best course to come was dessert, Jerusalem artichoke cake with rosemary caramel sauce and walnut oil ice cream . Sounds bizarre but best dessert ever eaten . Light , full of flavour so delicious. Coffee after was very good too . Perfect place to enjoy relaxing dinner pre theatre. We arrived at 5.30 no rush and staff were very friendly, helpful and very professional, attentive but not overbearing. Definitely go for dinner again to try main menu . Very reasonable prices too . We had a wonderful time at Kino doing their Cocktail Masterclass. Jamie, the Restaurant Manager, is an aficionado of spirits and cocktails and taught us so much about the origins of the spirits we were using. There were seven of us, and we were greeted with a cocktail upon arrival and made three more throughout the class. Jamie even threw in a healthy competitive round. I would say this is a Cocktail Masterclass for leisurely drinkers rather than a "let's go and get drunk" experience, which we loved. The ambience was fabulous, and we sat on sofas as we sipped our creations. Well done Kino and Jamie for looking after us all so well.

Booked for mother's day. We were dressed and about to leave the house and they cancelled the booking 48 minutes before we were due to dine. No phone call, just an automated email. After calling to check if this was a mistake they took over 15 minutes to confirm that they couldn't sit us due to an error in the booking system. So if you've booked a table and received confirmation, it means nothing to them and they may cancel at the last minute. My wife had been talking about visiting for months but I will never book here again. Awful customer service.

We have wanted to try Kino for a while having followed where Josh has been working. We came here for Mother’s Day and we were definitely impressed. The bread and butter is always a good gauge of how the rest of the meal is going to be, and it was a cracking start. Crispy and soft, chewy sourdough with whipped butter. Delicious. We had the soup and devilled crab for starters. Both were really nice. Mains were the trout and prawn cannelloni, and the venison pie. The trout dish was superb. The bisque with nduja was deep and fragrant. The trout was perfectly cooked. It was really a delicious dish. My mouth is watering again thinking about it haha. The venison pie I’m told was nice. The pastry was great, tasty filling and good sauce. The mash was smooth. Possibly a bit over seasoned on the filling but overall really tasty. We had the Jerusalem artichoke cake with walnut oil ice cream, and the red chocolate tart with sorbet. The cake was delicious. The ice cream went with it really well. The tart was a bit bitter. Overall a great restaurant and would definitely recommend and be back soon!

It’s a great idea to have a nice restaurant right next to the Grand Theatre. A good dinner and a glass or two of wine is just the thing to get you in the mood for the high drama of the opera that’s about to follow. Well, we got the good dinner and the wine. We also had two very nice cocktails from a short ungimmicky menu. My Negroni was more orangey than usual and I loved that twist. The service, for both food and drink, was swift and amiable. Unsurprisingly, because this is the pre-theatre crowd and they want to be buying their programmes in the Grand’s foyer in time to read the opera synopsis before the lights go down. The pre-theatre menu is short, only two options for each course. I had the terrine, my partner had the soup, and we swapped plates halfway through. Both were utterly delicious, as was the confit duck which followed, good winter food to brace you for the freezing cold outside. Everything else was spot on: the bread, the wine, and the coffee. And the prices were reasonable for what we were served. But I’ve docked a star for two things that can be easily rectified. Firstly, the pre-theatre menu. The restaurant’s website promises you’ll be done in 90 minutes and it fulfilled that promise. But I fancied the full à la carte menu and brought our booking forward to give us more time to choose from said menu. Except it isn’t available in the early evening; only the pre-theatre menu is available. Now I’ve looked on Kino’s website and there is no mention of this at all (unless I’ve missed it somewhere) so I have no idea at what time the full menu becomes available. Secondly, our table was in front of a doorway (there are two entrances, this first one as you walk down from the theatre and the one further down you are meant to use). Sitting here meant we got a blast of cold night air every time a customer came in. I was on the verge of asking for another table when the maître d’hôtel locked the door, to our great relief. But please, Kino, clarify your website and keep that second door locked. Or at least put a sign on it to direct customers to the right door.

We chose to eat at Kino pre-opera, enticed in addition by the 10% reduction offered to Friends of Opera North. Despite this being one of the named perks, the restaurant staff seemed to have no idea that this was the case, then wanted to see proof that we were Friends, then only agreed due to the silly amount of time being wasted. A choice was given of a set menu and the full menu, although this also became a confusion as, with only 2 mains on offer on the set menu, one of which was vegetarian, even with a 5.15 pm booking there was only one portion of the meat dish left. We were told we could substitute a main from the other menu, but when we came to order this apparently meant that we also needed a starter from the main menu as you could not mix and match. It was not apparent at this point that this meant that the price was bumped up, from a price which was already quite high. Being quite hungry, we ate all our food and did not complain, but both being pretty good cooks we were both quite disappointed. My crab on half a scone starter was bland and lacked texture. I didn’t think it worked as a concept to have a scone. The duck main was good in terms of the duck, but the lentil accompaniment was incredibly salty and completely overwhelmed the dish. I make something similar myself but way better. It lacked any vegetables, or side portion of vegetables, so as a meal was not balanced at all. The vegetarian risotto looked unappealing, and when asked how it was, my companion could merely muster ‘it tastes…. healthy’. Being incredibly thirsty from the salty main, we tried for ages to catch a waitress to ask for tap water, but they were apparently overwhelmed and we gave up. We similarly gave up trying to get coffee, and I had to go over to ask for the bill. With the performance start time fast approaching and the opportunity lost to buy a programme, I wasted yet more time debating the bill, which was not accurate and lacked the 10% discount we had been promised. We were offered a refund on the crab starter to compensate (which I have not received back in my account yet) and coffees to be ready for us at the interval as we had no time for them. When the interval arrived the two staff behind the bar were deluged with the immediate arrival of dozens of people wanting an interval drink. With only 20 minutes window many people gave up and left, having wasted their interval completely. We found that our coffees were not ready as promised. We were left waiting for the entire interval while the staff focussed on bar drinks, being told we would get the coffees….. in the final moments grabbing them in paper cups, having to run up the stairs and finding ourselves trying to get to our seats in the dark, late and inconveniencing everybody in the gallery. I yet again failed to have time to buy a programme. All in all, we could see what Kino was trying to achieve, but the food was not worthy of the price tag. A 5.15pm booking should have been more than adequate for a 7pm performance, but it wasn’t and there was already a shortage of the main meat dish on the set menu, and no time for pudding or coffee. The waitresses were attentive and kind - until they were overwhelmed and we could not draw their attention. The billing process was shambolic. If you do pre performance meals and drinks in a interval you must be set up to meet tight time demands. Especially in the interval. Perhaps pre-ordering is the answer, like old-school theatre bars, but with the staff aware what time the interval actually is! Next time we decide to eat before the opera we will go to the Thai place by the car park. It is cheaper, quicker, better food, and far more organised. I want Kino to be good. It isn’t.

I have eaten at Kino twice now; the food is excellent with generous portions. My most recent visit was on a quiet weekday evening. I had really flavoursome Devilled Crab starter followed by a duck dish that included a really tasty sausage of duck offal wrapped in radicchio, which was the star of the show! A delightful Baked Alaska rounded off a lovely meal. Our waitress, Demi was attentive and very friendly. We were also able to meet Chef James, who spoke knowledgably about the food.

We had a voucher for the pre Theatre menu. For £31 per person, we thought the menu quite limited in both variety and quality. We had the ham croquette starter, followed by the duck (two of the only four options available). And both those were dressed with the same, strong, mustard based dressing, which left us with the taste of having eaten the same thing twice. And the only accompaniment to the duck was a bed of lentils - again, rather limited and lazy. The bread we asked for was lovely, and the staff were excellent.

We visited last night for a pre opera dinner. I booked some time ago and to be honest, was a little disappointed that because we were early the Valentine’s Day menu was not available. I mean we were out because it was Valentine’s Day ? And we couldn’t have been later as we would have missed the opera ? The welcome when we arrived was excellent and there was live music which was very enjoyable. I chose to start with the leek soup. The soup was delicious but the leeks, which were uncooked and cold, were very challenging to eat with a spoon without splashing the soup. Eating such a large amount of raw leek turned out a very bad idea for me about an hour later 🙄. But I guess that’s my problem . The main course of duck and lentils was tasty despite looking dull but then I usually take too many photos of my dinners out anyway. Dessert was excellent. Great friendly service but I was a little puzzled by the member of the staff with a very unbuttoned shirt. I confess I did a double take . I work in hospitality doing the same job and that is unusual even when hot but then I’m a woman so it might cause more of an issue ! Friendly staff and reasonable prices for Leeds.

I visited Kino on a quiet Tuesday evening and was very impressed with the quality of the food and the service. We went for their seasonal evening menu (they also have a fixed price pre-theatre menu available earlier in the evening), and the food was absolutely delicious. The menu is relatively small, but with options to suit most dietary requirements and tastes - there was even a vegan bourginon which we didn't try but sounded incredible. I had a devilled crab starter which was lovely and rich, the sea trout and shrimp cannelloni with an absolutely amazing nduja sauce, and a decadent chocolate delice with a beautiful homemade sour cherry sorbet. The service was excellent, and staff were friendly and attentive. The wine list was impressive, and the cocktails were lovely too. Overall, it was a wonderful evening and I would recommend Kino to anyone!

Very friendly staff and a good atmosphere, however the food left a very bad taste in my/our mouth so much that I thought i might make a return!!! Firstly, the starters - leek and potato soup - four pieces of thickly cut leek two stuffed with a potato soup. The potato soup was tasteless and I had to eat the thickly cut leek with a soup spoon... I like leeks but not big chunks. The chicken starter had way too many flavours but was better than the soup. My friend almost enjoyed it! Kind of ok so far. But it got much worse... We both had the vegetarian dish which had a really strange flavour, but we had not had this before we were unsure if it should taste like this. A meat substitute why! There are many dishes but this did not work. The only item we enjoyed was the side of potato. It seemed to us it was style, presentation over substance. We eat out several times a month and this meal has not been great so much so I felt the need to order a desert to hopefully take the taste away - the main had left with us, but it didn't. I thought it was just me but my friend also agreed.if we had, had a choice I would have not paid the £85 for such a poor meal, we kept telling the staff we didn't enjoy it, but we thought it was us not being familiar with the food. The bad taste and poor feeling in our stomachs continued throughout the night, I almost had to visit the toilet and return the meal! As we walked through the upper dinning floor to the assembly room, many people appeared to be enjoying their food, maybe we selected the wrong menu items for us. I'm afraid our visit was very disappointing and I doubt we will return any time soon. Sorry if this hurts as you read this Kino but it is my truthful account of our first experience of your food.

We had the pre theatre menu. It’s quite difficult to review because overall the food was very good but there were a few issues. The food itself was divine but the soup was a little salty which was a shame. The vegan choc dessert was absolutely divine. We had to ask for spoons for our soup and I hadn’t realised my main came with a gravy and it had arrived when I was a third of the way through eating my dish , it seemed to have been forgotten. The food was presented to a very high standard and there were some innovative concoctions of flavours. I would go back but a few tweaks are necessary to turn this place into a more refined restaurant.

We were going to Leeds Grand Theatre,as Kino is next door we thought we would give it a try. The restaurant offered a limited ( 2 choices each course) pre theatre menu for £32. We thought it a bit expensive , this is Yorkshire after all, but sat down to enjoy the meal. The plus points for Kino are the staff ( friendly and professional) and the food . The duck confit was better than most I’ve had in France. However we will not be returning. We thought we might come back in future so I asked to see the a la carte menu. I was surprised to find that if we had ordered the same two dishes from that menu it would have cost £26.The restaurant manager couldn’t explain why this should be the case. Subsequently I emailed the restaurant for an explanation but they haven’t bothered to reply. To add insult to injury I have since discovered that the restaurant was participating in a 50% off food offer in January. Needless to say that despite the quality of the food the experience has left a bitter taste.

Our meal was a birthday gift, and it proved to be a very welcome one. We were in no hurry, as we were not attending the theatre. The service was prompt, but not rushed and the staff extremely pleasant and courteous, in comfortable modern surroundings. I had an excellent Guinea Fowl dish; a generous portion of very juicy and superbly cooked bird sitting on a bean stew. My wife has a shellfish allergy, but loves fish, so the chef kindly created a shellfish-free version of the fish dish on the menu. We had three courses, but opted for cheese rather than a sweet pudding; a nice selection. The freshly-cooked bread at the start of the meal was also excellent. Do try this restaurant!

We dined at Kino prior to a superb performance by Opera North of Verdi's Falstaff. The food was great, the service very on the ball and friendly but the kitchen was somewhat slow to deliver. So we didn't have time for a dessert, recommend more than the 90 minutes if you want 3 courses. Excellent value for money.

The site says allow 90 minutes if you have a theatre ticket so we allowed 15 over this. The food was amazing and very well priced but we didn’t get our mains until 20 mins before curtain up, and that after threatening to leave. We...

An odd experience. Some brilliant dishes some very average dishes. Some good service, some comically poor (1 starter was just completely forgotten, beer and wine brought that wasnt what we ordered). Will try again in the hope they can even out the consistency. If they can step up their game a bit there is some real promise here.

This is a great find with exceptional and innovative food at a reasonable price. Ate there last night whilst here in Leeds on business. Friendly and engaging team in a stylish restaurant (albeit quiet on a Wednesday evening). Well-presented, plentiful, stylish and incredibly tasty food. Salmon & Scallop fish cake, Guinea fowl and and a to-die-for warm salted caramel and popcorn custard donut.

We visited Kino last Friday for my birthday. Arriving a bit early, we enjoyed a terrific glass of wine sat outside in the last of the sun, before heading in to eat. The food was brilliant, I had Fruit & Nut Pâté en Croûte, Beef Featherblade & Steak Pie Gravy and Popcorn Custard Donut - all of which was delicious. Great value too at £29 for three courses! I'll definitely be back.

Bizarrely we were the only people in the restaurant, but the staff couldn't have been more friendly and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed the food which was different from most other restaurants and extremely tasty, I especially loved my Jerusalem Artichoke Cake & Salted Popcorn Ice Cream dessert. I would highly recommend a visit.

I visited Kino with 3 friends last Friday. The food was amazing! We ate from the set menu and all had 3 courses. The quality of the food and the presentation of every dish was superb. We were even tempted to order a couple of side dishes of the Ramen Back potatoes from the smell alone, as they were taken to another table. We were not disappointed! Fantastic food from Josh and the kitchen team, and also excellent service from the front of house team who were equally as enthusiastic of the dishes. It is so refreshing to be served by someone who has a huge smile on their face, and knowledge of the food. We will certainly be returning and recommending Kino to others.

Me and my partner came for our anniversary and had the set vegan menu with one side dish and two glasses of wine each. The food was spectacular as we imagined it would be. We're huge fans of Josh's food and to see him come into his own here is great! Very inventive, fresh, and tasty flavour combinations, in particular the corn and polenta dish. Service was fantastic and for the quality of food and wine received the price was very fair. Highly recommend for theatre goers and just people out for dinner.

Went to Kino last night after the relaunch to check out the new menu. The value for money is amazing!! The food was absolutely delicious, I had three courses and felt like I really got my money’s worth. I’m not veggie but the veggie options were really great and I had the veggie main too which was so tasty. The veggie options were deffo not an afterthought like a lot of places I’ve been to. The restaurant itself is gorgeous and they have done a really nice job with the refit. Overall a really exciting and upcoming place in Leeds and I can’t wait to see where they take it from here - will definitely be returning!

How they do it for the price I don’t know. The monkfish (ate it so quick I forgot a photo) starter was delicious. We had pork for main and the desert was artic roll and pear, wow, yummy. We will certainly be back ! 3 courses for £29, great value.

New menu was amazing, the monkfish and coley must try’s!! Cheeseboard was unreal!! Value for money is great also!! Was a little disappointed with the front house staff… Need to know exactly what’s on the menu, what’s in each dish… there was only 10 items, to me the knowledge should be a given and would have made the experience 5 star all around! Very attentive and lovely people though!

Very disappointing. The whole point of pre-theatre dinning is to have a stress free meal before getting to the performance on time. We had starters that were ok but then had to wait so long for the main course that we had to bolt it down in 10mins and frantically get the bill. One of the party had the Guinea Fowl which he said was good but our vegetarian dish was probably the nastiest meal Ive ever had. Tasting mainly of vinegar it had a plie of pickled onions under the polenta topped with a greasy deep fried mushroom. What were they thinking? The restaurant was not busy and there were lots of staff - none of whom acknowledged or explained the slow service . We got to the theatre with only minutes to spare. Will not be going again and definitely would not recommend.

The food was very good. We had polenta, very tasty a lovely meal. The treacle tart was great, although more like a cake. The kitchen is very slow, so takes time. The manager who took the orders seemed to know what he was doing and did bring the bills without asking. The waiters are not doing much, carrying plates to the table when the kitchen have an order ready. The people next to us were refused a desert order as the restaurant couldn't serve it in the time left before the opera. We went for a main course rather than risk delays with a starter, having read previous reviews before we visited. We did have time for the desert. Took one and half hours for two courses -- not really concept of pre-theatre. Kino could be great if kitchen is faster, the waiters could then do their job.

Ordered deep fried cauliflower and raddichio salad. Nice atmosphere and service in the restaurant, food was fresh using good quality ingredients but I found it bland and underseasoned. Having said that, I don't understand why the restaurant was half empty, it is a nice concept and there are far worse places to eat in Leeds. I think I would probably try it again but try something different.

First Visit, ideally located next door to Leeds Grand Theatre. This venue is setup for pre and post Theatre dining. Hummus is fantastic, small menu but adequate selection. I believe this may be owned and operated by the Theatre which is a registered charity. Looked like they were struggling with staff numbers but really nice team.

Had a great evening here attending a comedy set. Didn't try the food so can't comment there but the bar service was good and the atmosphere in the basement / stage area for the show was fab. The place is located at the bottom end of Leeds City centre and there is a huge car park opposite. It is also opposite Leeds bus station.

A proper pub. Good range of beers etc. Friendly Landlord and staff. Large car park and outside kid's area. Plenty of tables and seating. It has become our regular refuelling station.
