Sorry to have to say not very good fish very small chips really greasy, a shame really it was once the place to go to for a decent portion to take away, but it's seems that all food outlets have gone down the pan of late

Excellent as always. Can't think of anywhere better to stop on a long journey home. Only a small detour from the A1. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Excellent chippy in Wetherby. The quality of the food is superb; had fish, chips and curry. Nothing was greasy, and a glass of merlot to compliment it. Second visit; will be going again. The staff are friendly and jovial. If you're in the area this is a great eatery.

Stopped here to eat on way to Lake District. Fish and chips, rather grey haddock in very dark and salted batter. Disappointing.

My husband always tries to have fish n chips on a Friday so as we was in Yorkshire we must have them , our daughter who has had them from there when she worked in Harrogate & told us she only had the take away but they are the best she has ever had , she wasn't wrong thay are very very good , the young girl that served us was very professional & they was very busy but still chatted a bit to us which was nice. The restaurant is upstairs but we noticed there is a lift & a ramp between the different part of the dining room so very goodfor people who can't manage the stairs .

A delicious Haddock n Chips with mushy peas. The batter was nice and thin and crispy, the fish cooked beautifully flakey and moist. And a Black Sheep beer, happy days!

Fish was a skinny tail end, chips were okay, not worth stopping off if your on the A1, used to be. Just another average fish shop.im out.

Fabulous fish and chips. The restaurant had a fabulous lift for disabled people and the restaurant was wheelchair accessible. The staff were lovely and very helpful.

Not as good as it was. They seem to have switched away from beef dripping which was the main reason I came back from Cheshire to eat there

Food was delicious - the manager, Carron, on the other hand. Wow, smile and be gracious towards your customers and the young girls you work with. She was just chaos walking around, demanding things from the young waiters. Ruined it.

The fish the size of a small batter sausage, Yorkshire fish cake with not much fish in it at all yet plenty of fish bones 🙈 crazy ! Mildly warm mushy peas, not great this time and we are pretty regular here sadly won’t be coming back for a while now. The fish has halved in size since we last came a couple months ago.

when we arrived we were shown to a table that was only suitable for one person not two the staff were miserable the fish batter was so hard the waitress took it away and brought me another which was almost the same where is the crispy batter seen in the photographs chips to be fair were good but you now have to pay for bread and butter over all not a good experience and we will not be going again

What you would expect. Traditional sit down Yorkshire fish and chips. Cup of tea, glass of dandelion and burdock, bread and butter. Go for it.🤗

Another great visit to Wetherby Whaler after a nice day out. Now fully refurbished and it looks great. Well finished and with good AC too made a comfortable meal with good service and great Fish and Chips.

Disappointed is not the word I wanted to use the food we received today from your shop was absolutely disgusting the quality of you food was extremely below par if I would had my way I would of returned the food so disappointed will NOT be returning

Had fish and chips yesterday, was served by Carron and staff, felt so looked after. Can't wait to return.

Called into the restaurant for a table of 8 including 5 kids. The server rolled her eyes at us when we walked in. Then said we could only have 2 tables of 4 which was fine. She got some menus and walked away. Came back a few seconds later and said "what are you doing? Are you coming or not". I said well you didn't ask us to follow you so are we just guessing? She rolled her eyes again and grunted at us to come to the tables. Chucked all the menus on one table and walked off. We ended up leaving and getting a takeaway. Supposed to be a family restraunt and we most definitely weren't welcome.

Food ok but expensive. Avoid going by car as nearby car park have hefty fines run by external companies. Family get together for a couple of hours cost over £300.

Always satisfied with the food, good portions. Recently refurbished to a high standard and always clean when I visit.

We had never been to wetherby before but it had been highly recommended by my brother in law who highlighted the several excellent butchers shops and especially this chip shop called the Wetherby whaler. He described the fish as being huge and in his words like a whale. He was right. No wonder the place……no pun intended……is so popular.

Lovely atmosphere and one of the best fish and chips we have ever had. The staff were brilliant and the price reasonable. Highly recommended and will definitely return.

Absolute top notch food. Service was ok. Friendly, but a little slow for a chippy imho. Had to remind the fella I wanted scraps (he’d forgotten) had to remind the fella I wanted ketchup (he’d forgotten) was not disappointed with the fish chips mushy peas etc for the 3 of us at all. Just had takeaway fish & chips from the Wetherby shop. Absolutely awful 😞 Fisn overcooked and definitely NOT fresh Had an awful smell and left a bitter taste in my mouth. Also vinegar was watered down and hand had no taste. Took back and left on counter. Will not be going again.

Lovely fish - haddock of course! We parked at the supermarket a few minutes walk away - it's free for 2 hours.

Myself and 3 friends were travelling from Sheffield to Whitehaven in Cumbria and I suggested we stop at the Wetherby Whaler for our tea on the way because they serve the most delicious fish and chips. A very pleasant young lady showed us to our table and a gentleman arrived to take our order. I ordered a large haddock and chips with mushy peas and 2 of my friends ordered medium haddock with chips and mushy peas. My other friend asked the waiter if he could have a small portion to which the waiter pointed out that the medium haddock was the smallest portion they could serve. So he asked if he could maybe have a child’s portion, we were informed that the child’s portion was the same size as the medium adult portion, company policy states that he couldn’t have a small portion or a child’s portion. After a little discussion my friend had no choice but to order the medium portion knowing full well that he couldn’t manage it. In hindsight we probably should have left the restaurant at that point because company policy stated that they couldn’t accommodate our needs. The food arrived but the atmosphere had changed considerably which spoiled the experience. My friend had become increasingly upset and bewildered as we had suggested to the waiter that maybe he could ask the chef to cut a medium fish in half, again company policy would not allow this. We finished our meals and my 2 of my friends helped my 3rd friend clear his plate. The waiter arrived and said to my friend ‘it appears you could eat all of your meal after all!!’ Not very pleasant. My friend then pointed out to the waiter that he was recovering from stomach surgery and had to have assistance with his meal, which upset him even more having to disclose personal information to try and justify himself to the waiter. The manageress then took over to sort out the bill and she said my friend could have had fish goujons but it was never offered when ordering and it’s not on the menu. May I point out that this has nothing to do with finances. My friend feels that he was discriminated against because of his appearance, I fail to see why the waiter could not have asked the chef to cut a haddock fillet in half? Has the Wetherby Whaler become so comfortable that the customer can either do as they are told or find somewhere else to dine?

My husband and I visited today, and the fish and chips were so delicious, we were served by a lovely lady called Lesley and she was so attentive, and very helpful, a credit to the business, her customer service was second to none, just how it should be so thank you Lesley for making our trip fir lunch so much nicer, would recommend to friends and family to pay a visit.

Worst chips I've been served in a long time. At nearly £3 a portion, they should be good.

Just completed a portion of standard fish and chips and was comprehensively disappointed. The fish was shockingly small, probably three mouthfuls, and the chips were a miserable ensemble of misshapen scraps of chips that contained little or no potato. All in all, a throughly miserable portion of fish and chips and certainly not value for money.. If there was a competition for the worst Fish and Chips in Yorkshire, the Wetherby Whaler would win hands down! After 19 years of patronage, this relationship has now come to an end.

Dreadful service - no staff behind the counter until the shop filled up and then four appeared and although my order had been taken and I'd been waiting the longest I was the last to get served.

We changed to another shop but since trying Wetherby Whaler again we were pleasantly surprised. Very good.

We called in yesterday (Saturday) on the way home from Harrogate. The food was lovely & hot, we didn't have to wait for the food to come to our table either. Nice, friendly staff, very clean surroundings. Thank you Wetherby Whaler.

Had plaice and chips the plaice was all batter and very little fish. Very disappointed not what I expected. Will think before visiting again

The wife and I had been to Ripon on business mid week and happened to say to the person we had dealt with that we would call into weatherby services was told to go into the town and look out for the weatherby whaler, decided to eat in the restaurant so went upstairs,after studying the menu decided on the senior 3 course meal.had home made tomato soup,then the haddock and chips with bread and butter pot of tea and to finish the wife had ice cream whilst I had a triffle all for £31 or so wouldn't have got that much in the services,the waitresses where attentive and the service was quick but there was no rush to get you out of the door.The décor was bright with old photos of the town which in its self was a pleasant walk around the shops ,the fishmonger's, butcher's all got my customer as the food looked nice.

My wife and I got two fish, a fishcake and chips from the takeaway away at around 5pm. The only acceptable part of the meal was the fishcake. The fish were very flat and mushy, as if they were frozen fillets, with little taste of the fresh haddock that we are more accustomed to in West Yorkshire. The fish batter was soft and unappetising. The chips were very scrappy and small, with only a couple being more than a couple of centimetres long. Suffice to say we won't be wasting our money again at this location.

I called in today to buy a Fish Butty and Chips to take out. I received my order, drove out of town and found somewhere peaceful to eat my meal. I opened the takeaway box containing the Fish to be greeted with something that resembled a fried Sardine. I was extremely disappointed but luckily for The Wetherby Whaler I was very hungry and too far away to go back.

Whaler haddock was so so so so so so so so so soggy. Batter no flavour. Chips cold. Fishcake with no fish. Disappointed

Shame, was not aware they only sold the cheap alternative and not proper fish ( COD). Haddock is ok for some, but has an acquired taste, dry and very "mealy". Guess it is often used because its cheaper alternative to proper Cod. Had enough chippys teas spoiled because of being forced into eating Haddock. Not for me,

Nice enough fish and chips, but the staff look absolutely miserable. Not a smile amongst them, no hello when you walk in, no acknowledgement when they serve you other than taking an order. I think they should go to Mr C's in Selby to understand what good customer service looks like, as taking money and handing over goods isn't a nice customer experience. I think the F&Cs were as good as other places, so probably won't go out of my way to visit again.

Lovely fish and chip shop with a great restaurant upstairs to boot. There was a queue to get in and you had to wait on the staircase but it was the busiest bit of lunch. Once seated we were served quickly and the food came quickly too. All in I'd highly recommend if you're looking for a classic fish and chips.

I called off here on the way to my mum and dad‘s house. The portions are unbelievably brilliant and the food itself is unbelievably tasty. The staff are friendly and everyone that was in there was chatty all in all and absolutely brilliant service.

Just moved to area first visit. disapointed . Bought takeaway fish a d chips and small fish. Good size fair price. But cold seemed to have been kept warm for a long time. A great reputation not kept to.
