food was good, great serving size, had a very homely feel, extremely filling. on the other hand our waiter was rude and unapproachable believe his name began with ‘M’ possibly mason. other than that it was a lovely atmosphere

The food was very nice and hot. Mushy peas were substituted with marrowfat peas but not mentioned by the server. The pianist made the occasion really. Young team members were stood chatting for most of the time during our visit. Difficult to attract their attention for additional drinks, tartare sauce and then the bill, so we just got up and went to the counter to,pay and leave. The mature team member worked her socks off, racing around clearing tables and serving.

Going to the Whaler has long been a family tradition. We have enjoyed the senior special for quite a few years now. Today, however, we were very disappointed. We had to wait a long time to get our pots of tea. There was no bread and butter. The fish was good but the chips not great, and we all left some. The desert was half warmed up, congealed custard and luke warm pudding. And the milk jug was filthy, stained with patches of sauce. The price had gone up and that is understandable. Every restaurant has had to increase its prices. Unfortunately the Whaler has also cut back on its product. I couldn’t recommend it.

This place has gone totally downhill. We went as a party of 7 for a family reunion with guests. A very little NG wait for the food to be served. Soup half a tin......horrible taste. Large fish and chips was large but the batter was out facing and the chips has to be seen to be believed. Small scraps of potato,not warm and peas were cold and claggy. It was embarrassing for our visitors when they had so much looked forward to it. Everyone left half of their food. The drinks were extortiate and despite asking for a.jug of water twice it never arrived. We also asked for more hot water for the tea....but it never came. Cost over £135......total rip off. No one asked if everything was alright andq I refused to pay the discretionary 10% charge for service A very , very big disappointment Will not be going there again.

Had an absolutely delicious meal here with fantastic service from Connor (helping out from the Pusey branch). Very quick service, food cooked to order and very tasty. Our only complaint is that the Brandy snap dream has been taken off the menu ☹️. Had the trifle instead but was a poor second although quite nice. Also surprised that bread and butter is now no longer included.

Ate here a few times a couple of years ago and it was delicious, with enormous portions and bread / butter and tea included. Ate here again a couple of nights ago, prices have gone up, portion size was a lot smaller than 2 years ago and bread, tea etc now extra! So pretty insulting but not unique to here at all sadly. Food was still excellent and the building is lovely so still enjoyed it but won't come back on principal until the prices have dropped or the portion sizes have increased to match the price. Shame as such nice fish & chips

Have to honest called here because the queue at Murgatroids was too long. Firstly no queue which was a bonus on a cold Sunday evening. Shown to a table and plenty of space which was nice. The piano was a bit loud but otherwise ok. Very impressed with the staff member who was courteous and polite and customer focused. We had two senior specials which were a fair price. The non senior meal was more expensive. We had two Haddock meals and a Scampi - all good.

We were just delighted with such a comprehensive gluten free menu in the restaurant. To be able to take my mother to a fish and chip restaurant where she has a real choice in all 3 courses is quite something - full marks! Compare that to Murgatroyds, where - to the best of my memory, it is a few years ago - she was basically told that she could have ocean pie, or one type of fish, and it came with French fries type chips, not the real thing, which was a little disappointing. Personally I would like to see cod on the menu; I have haddock all the time as a takeaway, and I enjoy having cod as a change whenever I go to Murgatroyds - it’s not commonly available in Yorkshire chippys, yet it’s a cheaper fish than haddock nowadays, so I can’t see any reason not to offer it. It would be popular with Southern visitors too! It’s been a little while since our meal so I can’t really remember the specifics of what we had, only that it was a very pleasant evening. They have fetched it back from the dead, I remember what it was like in the dying days of Harry Ramsdens - Oh my days! It was acceptable food, but “We can’t be doing with serving separate tables, not on a Thursday night love!” Hence we were told to share a long table and mingle with a pensioner’s coach party from Clacton, and a noisy entertainer with a microphone came round forcing us to sing a verse each of a daft song. We still share this amusing anecdote, they really had just given up! One more thing - if you could find a gluten free scampi option to add to the menu, you’d see us pretty regularly, as we have literally never found it anywhere? Oh, and how about that great seasonal Harry Ramsdens tradition where you paid a reasonable charge, and your child could choose a “Cheap and cheerful” wrapped present from under the enormous Christmas tree to fetch back? A great childhood memory! Don’t mean to be arrogant, not telling you how to run your business, I’m just suggesting things that would appeal to us and therefore presumably many others too.

Had fish and chips from here a few times recently and have to say, they have been pretty sickly and awful. This was also on the back of a couple of mates saying the same, one of which complained. The fish was dry and claggy, the batter soggy and awful. I wont be returning anytime soon. Midgley’s in Ilkley is 100 times better.

Great fish and chips, we all had the seniors meal. Absolutely delicious, fresh fish, crisp batter and lovely cooked chips. Followed by apple sponge and custard. Highly recommended

The staff in the takeaway section need some very basic customer service training. Making eye contact with & not ignoring customers would be a great start.

Been a few more times than my waistline allows, but had to write this review after our visit today. From our initial greeting to paying the bill and leaving the food, service and atmosphere was excellent. Where can you turn up without booking on a Sunday evening, be sat down, order and served within 10 minutes. As usual our fiah and chips were freshly cooked, tasty, with all the sides. The warm cherry Sunday was a delight. All this accompanied by the live pianist entertaining us.

I went for lunch with 2 senior friends, I ordered regular haddock and chips, my friends ordered the senior menu. I can not believe the portion size I received for my £15, it was a child’s portion!!!! on a childs size plate, I had exactly 12 chips? My senior friends portions were twice the size of mine, also , tea, bread and butter is now to pay for extra. I have never been out for fish and chips and come away not being full. Please do not waste your money or time going here, Murgatroyds is 100% nicer.

I remembered this place fondly from the past as Harry Ramsden's & it was a delight to return for early dinner with my parents. The pianist was playing, the staff were a delight & extremely preceptive about my mum in a wheelchair. Toilets were so clean, big plus point! It was great to have good fish & chips, in my case without batter & with a salad. There were lots of other people there with various disabilities & it is obvious that people feel very comfortable & assured they will be looked after courteously.

Was not impressed. The quality and service do not reflect the prices. Two fish and chips with 2 soft drinks £45. Didn't taste very nice. Restaurant was run down inside and grubby feel. I prefer Bannys in Colne. Much better service and value for money.

Overall the food was ok service was good but if your going to charge for bread and butter at least use fresh decent bread,mine had obviously been out of the packet for a while as it was hard and tasteless

Called in last week with a mate for a takeaway each . Both went for fish and chips in a tray . Sounds simple ! Not for this shower it wasn’t . My fish came battered but literally looked the shade of a small lobster !! My mate ended up with two pieces of battered fish . He couldn’t be bothered to say anything but I said I just wanted a haddock fillet . A minute later it was replaced with a fillet . Looks like they just serve the rubbish in the take away . Chips were cold and scrappy and both our fish were soggy and absolutely tasteless . The woman serving wasn’t interested in doing her job and the fryer needs sacking serving that utter utter rubbish . Never again will I grace that place and just pass it by folks you have been warned

Friends and I stopped off unexpectedly and weren't disappointed. The inside looks like it would suit a tea dance. We had a lovely meal, great service and the desserts are big enough to serve two.

Me sorprende cómo puede haber algunas críticas terribles para este lugar que he comido aquí muchas veces y todo siempre ha sido fantástico. ¡También diría que la masa de pescado y el helado son los mejores aquí de todos los balleneros! El menú Seniors (11. 95) ofreció un gran valor que los 3 de nosotros pedimos. Todo iba bien hasta que llegó el pescado exagerado. Rebozado plano, de un color bruñido profundo. (El resultado de demasiados pescados en la freidora con la caída de las temperaturas es la causa habitual) No se hicieron devoluciones de Ask, a pesar de que las camareras tenían tiempo para hacerlo. Quería mucho que nos gustara nuestra visita, pero necesitan elevar sus estándares tanto en el frente de la casa como en la cocina.

Tuvimos una comida fantástica aquí esta noche para celebrar el cumpleaños de mi esposo. El personal fue increíble, todo el lugar estaba impecable y nuestra camarera hizo todo lo posible por cumplir con sus obligaciones. El pescado estaba muy bien cocinado. Filete blanco espeso rodeado de una masa deliciosamente crujiente y el chasquido de helado y brandy fue solo la guinda del pastel para completar la carne.¡Un gran agradecimiento a todos los involucrados en hacer de nuestra noche especial!Lizb

Enjoyed a lovely family meal. Chap on door friendly and organised in taking on the door bookings. Good service. All staff wearing masks. Food lovely and fresh. Only negative/recommendation would be to have more choice on the senior menu for starters and desserts.

Muy decepcionado esta noche, cóctel de gambas. Lo peor que he comido nunca es montones de lechuga con unas gambas calientes encima, con poca salsa grandes trozos de pepino y. Tomates, mal presentados. pescado no está mal patatas fritas simplemente calientes, tuve que pedir salsa y sí, luego, para cubrir todo, se ha utilizado un pequeño helado con salsa aguada encima, productos muy baratos. Muy mala comida. No volveré.

This is my favourite place to go when I rarely go out but I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to book a table. The queue was out the door and it was raining so unfortunately I couldn’t go In on this occasion.

The pudding of syrup sponge pudding had no syrup that I could taste. A crumble would be better.The one thing they need to do is take a Look in the bottom of the double glazed windows as they are full of dirt and need cleaning out. It's a bit off putting when your eating and you can see the dirt.

I went with my family to this place in August 2020, taking advantage of the help to eat scheme. We requested our fish & chips to be fried in vegetable oil and after 15 minutes the food was on our table, labeled with a tag that it was fried in vegetable oil. Our meal also included a large pot of tea, served in traditional metal teapot. All the sauces were also included. I normally don't write reviews unless the food was exceptional and good value and this was one of those few occasions that it was. The service was spot on and the place is very clean.I would definitely go back and would happily pay the full price after the help to eat scheme has ended.

Honestly you have to try here is you haven’t already. The food is absolutely delicious and incomparable I cannot wait to go back

It was great to return. Whilst the Seniors Lunch now costs £11.95 it is still fantastic value in spite of the fact that there are only one soup and two desserts available. A great deal of thought has gone into the planning at it is a very safe environment and the staff as always are friendly and very helpful, I certainly enjoyed my three visits and will be back again. Will also be trying out the York venue.

Have visited this restaurant many times over the years & always loved the food but this is our first post lockdown trip to a restaurant & we were very reassured that they were following all the safety recommendations. First you now have to book a table then they have hand sanitizer at the entrance, there's a 1 way system to walk round the property & a lot of the tables have been removed so the tables are very well spaced out. The staff wear visors & you have paper menus & sachets of salt, vinegar etc. The quality of the food was great as ever & the staff are lovely but above all it was brilliant to be able to eat out for the 1st time in months while still feeling as safe as you can be at the moment, well done to all concerned & thank you for giving our family a semi normal Saturday lunchtime.

Place your order online pick a time slot turn up at your time, barely queue and hey presto gorgeous fish n chips for the family. They email you prior to pick up time to tell you your pick up point.
