Stopped here for lunch Bank Holiday Monday, sat in the spacious garden with the dogs and ate some good quality food. Pub food has become so expensive last few years that what was once a regular activity has become a treat. So great when you do get good food and lovely staff.

We recently booked an overnight stay at the Premier Inn Ross on Wye only to find their restaurant had closed. We looked for a nearby place where we could eat dinner and as this pub was less than 10 mins away we gambled on it being ok! The pub is an olde world type place in lovely gardens and the ambience was quiet but very nice. We were given a warm welcome by the friendly staff and there was a good choice of food. The food served was really excellent in every way, hot, plentiful and of an excellent quality and I would recommend the steak and mushroom pie which was served with a choice of potatoes and a selection of vegetables……yummy! My wife had the chicken in leek and cider sauce which she also thoroughly enjoyed! Don’t have rhubarb crumble, which was excellent, but enough to feed an army! Prices were also very reasonable! Thank you to all for coming to the rescue!

After being away from the county of my birth for 24 years it was lovely to find that the friendliness & hospitality of the Herefordshire people is still alive & well, & is never more in evidence than at the Weston Cross Inn. The Landlord Graham & his wife Lesley were delightful as were two of their staff, Anna & David. The food, home-cooked, was very enjoyable as was a very nice glass of Malbec. I would certainly recommend a visit to the Weston Cross to anyone visiting the Wye valley.

I visited for an evening meal with 17 other women, unfortunately it had only been booked for 17. I had ordered roast beef - was the last to be served to be told there was no more. ? (I suspect pre-packed roast dinners..). The lady in charge then stood in the middle of the room bemoaning the fact that the numbers were wrong; she made me feel as if it were my fault and was quite unhelpful. She said did I want fish and chips? Or cottage pie? Eventually brought a menu (suspiciously large) and I chose sirloin. At which point she said I would have to pay more for that! Of course when the food was brought out most of the others had finished their meal. The meat was gristly and I left most of it. (my friend had a doggy bag for her dog and that is where it went to) When I went to pay she didn't charge extra for the sirloin which was just as well. I have given one star for service, I may say the other girls serving were fine. The food, may be one star as well I am afraid. We are all locals, and this pub will not be getting our support again.

Distinctly average lunch experience. If you like factory made starters (samosas/prawn sticks etc) warmed up for service, and pre-cut meats for your Sunday main, rather than freshly cooked, with uninspiring overcooked vegetables, then this is for you. Pleasant, attentive service by the young woman waitress redeemed our experience a little but not enough to encourage our return. The whole offering needs investment.

We visited here for second time as a family and the food and service was good but you could hear a pin drop so made the conversation difficult as the people around us were listening to every single word we said. We were met by friendly staff on both our visits (once for a drink, once for a meal). They do a nice drop of Bass, but my wife's tea was only offered in a cup, not a pot - so no refill ... When we ate we made a mistake - we had starters. Don't get me wrong, they were delicious -and quite hefty (whitebait, and a black-pudding-bacon-and-cheese stack) - these would have been a good meal for lunch. When the mains came (lamb rump, and faggots, we could neithr of us finihs the massive protions but they do offer doggy bags. The chips I left behind did us both the follwoing evening with some oven fish. I was served enough mushy peas to feed four or five people. Delicious and good value for money. Regrettably, but not surprisingly, we had no room for dessert, so can't comment on the quality of theirs puddings.

Having been keeping "safe" for many months this weekend we ventured forth to the Weston Cross. We have only been using the take out service during this time.So impressed with the hygiene tasks being carried out by the staff. Much better we hear than many other establishments in the area. With table spacing you feel safe in the knowledge the team are doing a good job.. The tables are booked and then reserved with your name on.Enough has already been said about the great food served previously so wont mention it. But I was appalled by the comments by the person who couldnt bring a dog into the bar dining area on a wet day - whats happened to common sense!. Of course, dogs not allowed. I have a dog but wouldnt dream of having it in an area where people were eating. Its a stressful time for everyone and sometimes communication can be lost but surely the complainer should have realised that hygiene and a pleasant environment for the many comes first. - But then to lose it on trip advisor. Pathetic, in these particularly sad times.

We booked lunch here for noon and we asked if dogs were welcome to which they replied “ Outside - Yes”. Due to the weather, we booked our meals online and I asked if we would be able to eat inside. I was told yes. We turned up in dreadful weather and the waitress lead us to a table. I assume it was a very grumpy owner who said “ No dogs inside”. No apologies.Even the waitress looked stunned in disbelief !We got up to leave and she said “ So your leaving ? Your not going to sit outside under a brolly ? “ ( It was bouncing of the road). I shook my head and left disgusted by this.As folks will know, if you have not booked in advanced, you cant get in anywhere at short notice.Covid is financial crisis for this industry but common manners and decency should be standard these days. This week, we have eaten at the old court hotel and the red lion inn. After a friendly welcome from the owners, with drinks in the garden before our meal, the food was delicious. One of the things which attracted me to the Weston Cross (apart from the fact that it's not far from home and the staff are super-friendly) is the variety of fish dishes on the menu. Not just the "traditional fish and chips" you find on most pub menus. So I ordered smoked haddock with a poached egg. And it was perfect. I mean the haddock was excellent, but the poached egg was perfect - and I know from bitter experience how difficult that is. 10 out of 10 for the chef.We were with a group of friends and not one had a duff meal. Our only complaint - the servings were huge (this is the Forest of Dean after all, where small portions are a hanging offence).Swift and friendly service, very reasonable prices and a lovely and out-of-the-ordinary choice of desserts. Plus easy parking and - in the summer if it ever comes - a lovely outdoor play area for children.

Didnt stay for a meal. Staff put off regulars by keeping the doors barred then offered a substantially reduced menu because they had 'a party' to cater for. We were staying in the Penyard Hotel about 5mins walk down the road so popped up for a drink at about 8.30 in the evening. We walked in and first thought was about the decor being a bit worn out. There’s traditional pub but this is just a bit shabby and definitely doesn’t live up to the exterior. Most disappointing though was the lack of good ales. We’re surrounded by good breweries but I was told the only ales available were Bass or London Pride. That’s not good. The service from the bar staff was adequate but not particularly friendly, no response to my good night as we left (pretty much as quickly as we could).

Pub looks lovely from outside but inside is tired and dated. Read previous reviews and looked forward to a great meal. Firstly, we asked for a table for 2, admittedly we hadn't booked it being a Tuesday evening we thought we'd be OK but the chef was very ungracious, made us feel we were inconveniencing them, then we're told after purchasing a drink at the bar to go through to the sinning room. Our order was taken but people entering after us were served first and we waited till last to receive our meal which although hot and freshly cooked was distinctly average and not the food reviews inclined us to expect. We went to pay and were charged again on the bill for the drinks we had paid for at the bar on arrival, these were removed after I pointed it out. All in all the service was poor, staff a bit basil fawlty and the food very average, deserts were in a chiller cabinet and were cheesecake or ice cream. Wouldn't go again or recommend unless you like to be made to feel they are doing you a favour in serving you

One thing about this area seems to be the lack of dog friendly pubs doing meals. Sure there are a few but they know how to charge and some are not all that friendly. It was a warm day, so we sat outside, but were told we had to eat inside, as they were short staffed! - not impressed. The dining room was very cramped with very very average unimaginative pub food. There is a cake fridge in the dining room. It is 2019 not 1989!. Outside we had a nice view of the pub staff laundry. Why don’t the owners fence this off? In the pub garden, there is what appears to be a large septic tank, why is this monstrosity not disguised. Maybe try again in 2029.

We enjoyed it so much that we returned on our second night in the area - for a drink only on that occasion as we had already eaten. Again, great welcome, from the friendly helpful staff. Would highly recommend!

This public house was visited for an evening meal and was not disappointed. There was a large chalkboard with many different choices. When served, it was presented well by friendly staff, even though the venue was full with patrons using the large garden for meals and drinks. The meals were a little more expensive than the regular pub chain meals, but it was well worth it. It was cooked to perfection with a lot of flavour. Thanks to everyone for looking after us on Friday night.

Delicious home cooked food at reasonable prices. Owners give a very warm welcome and don’t hassle you to order quick. Easy to find on the A40 (though you don’t hear any road noise) in the middle of the village and 10 min walk from Penyard House Hotel.

We were staying nearby at Penyard House on a B & B so had the freedom to have evening meals at an alternative venue. Made a good choice here, great value & quality food - enormous helpings! Very friendly people. They have a large board with extensive choice of meals. Highly recommended and would come back here if & when in this area.

Stayed nearby and walked to the pub. Very warmly welcomed by staff. Ate there on 3 occasions. All the food was home cooked and absolutely lovely. Recommendations were given about local attractions which was very helpful. Totally recommend this pub. Many thanks for three lovely evenings.

My wife, her 98 year old mother and myself went here for Sunday Lunch.Mother in law doesn't manage to get out very often and so was really looking forward to it. We chose here based on TripAdvisor but our experience was far from other reviews had stated. When we arrived we were asked for drink order almost before we sat down. Beer was good. Then we ordered the meal. After we ordered my mother in law asked to use loo. This was going to be a slow process. As they were going out to loo the meal was coming in the opposite direction and dumped on the table. It was obvious the elderly lady was going to be a while and there was no offer of holding the meals until they got back. So the hot food Sat on the table until their slow return. Subsequently the food was cold when the elderly lady was only half way through as was ours. So she did not enjoy. The roast beef was not freshly cut it was warmed and flooded in gravy. It was lacking any real flavour. Plenty of vegetables on offer and good variety.

Don't be put off by dated interiors, the food and drinks are brilliant and the staff are perfect too. Dropped in by chance on a Sunday lunch and actually had steak and a venison pie - very well cooked and very generous portions. Would come back!

Lovely food, lovely service. No more to say. Visit this pub if you are in the area. This pub is a five minute walk from Penyard House. Have a walk and receive better food, better service, cheaper drinks and great customer service, unlike the hotel.

Hadn’t been here for years as there wasn’t much to recommend it under previous management, but was very pleasantly surprised when we called in on a Boxing Day walk. Well kept beer and extensive home made menu. Soup & pate were excellent, with plenty of toast for the latter. Will definitely be going back to try something more substantial.

A textbook experience from the moment we entered this charmingly characterful pub restaurant. The staff were attentive from the beginning to the end, polite & friendly. Our meals were well cooked & delicious & we ended with a tea & coffee; my coffee was the best I've experienced in a long time! We shall certainly return quite soon!

Absolutely shocking Saturday lunch experience. Arrived mid lunch time to an empty pub and miserable, unwelcoming, inconvenienced bar maid. All the ale was off. Most of the specials weren’t on so ordered the wild boar hot dog with a salad. It arrived in a stale, cremated smart price bun. The actual hot dog had been oven cooked until it was blackened, it looked like it had been heated up multiple times. Diced, undercooked onions. The meal arrived with a huge portion of oven chips (frozen, undercooked), no salad. Tried mentioning this to the waitress but she’d stormed off. Honestly, the worst paid meal I’ve ever had. Didn’t finish, left and won’t ever be back. Now I understand why the place was empty. The place has so much potential. Hopefully it goes bust and is bought by someone that understands good hospitality.

We were staying on the Malvern View Country and Leisure Park for a weekend stay which we could not fault. However, we dined at The Old Barnhouse on the Saturday evening and unfortunately the food was terrible. We waited for nearly an hour and when the food arrived it was half cold. My mother and father had scampi and chips, no peas and they were out of tartare sauce! My sister and I had the New Yorker chicken which consisted of a huge portion of coleslaw that wasn’t very nice and the chicken was small and if poor quality. My daughter had a kids pizza, chips and beans which was just about acceptable. The five meals and a round of drinks came to over £80 which was appalling for the quality of the food. Avoid The Old Barnhouse for food! Pleasant enough for a drink.
