Decided to try as wanted somewhere local that we haven't been to before. Was pleasantly surprised. Meal was very well cooked and presented. Plenty of veg. Good Yorkshire puds and lovely Cauliflower cheese. The apple crumble was home cooked rather than bought in as many places are and wasn't overly sweet. Would definitely go back again.

Our first visit to this lovely pub for Sunday lunch. Booked to have Sunday roast. Lovely atmosphere and welcoming log burner. Was made to feel very welcome . . We ordered our lunch and we didn’t have to wait . The meal was delicious perfectly cooked with good choice of meat & veg. Generous portions and very reasonably priced. The desserts looked amazing but sadly we didn’t have enough room to eat any more. Will definitely be returning and thoroughly recommend.

Um, not a good experience sadly. We'd booked a room for 2 nights. And arrived at approximately 5:10pm, as the checkin information stated that checkin wasn't until after 5pm. The place was in total darkness and just 1 vehicle in the car park apart from ours. We however proceeded to walk towards the building, where a lady with a dog appeared to have just exited the building, and asked us whether she could help us. We told her we had a room booked, the response was 'oh, what name?' We gave her our name and that still clearly didn't register with her, as she then asked us who we had booked through. It was quite clear she was not expecting us. However, she proceeded to tell us she could check us in, and put the heating on in our room, but the bar wouldn't be open until 6pm. With the place in darkness, a less than positive reaction from this person, and a bar not open until 6pm, it really didn't fill us with confidence or a warm welcome feeling. We decided to leave, although we had paid for two nights. At which point the lady became quite unpleasant. A very unfortunate experience indeed. I certainly wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Maybe it's more welcoming in season. However, all is well that ends well, as we then booked in at 'The Hoops Inn' at Horns Cross. What a difference, a fabulous warm welcome, very helpful staff, and fabulous food, and excellent value for money. Well worth a visit.

Visited for Sunday lunch and it was absolutely delicious. Four choices of meat and a good selection of vegetables. Servings were huge and well worth the £14 also a large selection of desserts. At first, we didn`t have great confidence in this pub. There was only one solitary other diner and we wondered whether we might have chosen poorly. We changed our minds when the food arrived. Our table (of six) had ordered several different dishes from the extensive menu. All were very good and we were well satisfied.

A slightly ragged experience, we are local to the area so knew what to expect, for sophisticated travellers however it might be a step too far. We had dinner, and breakfast the following morning, not the best value for money but prices have gone crazy in the UK recently and I think places are exploiting that in many cases.

We booked a twin room. It didn’t feel like it had been used for ages. It was very dusty. The carpet was very thin and the bedding too. The room window was directly above the smoking are so couldn’t be opened to vent the room. The bathroom window opens onto the fire escape so did not want to leave this one open either. The shower door had no handle, it was a suction hook, which was not very suctiony. (Broken by a previous guest) Inside the shower was lots of black mould, all around the edges and the tray did not drain well. The water is EXCEPTIONALLY hot, to a dangerous level. In the dining room at breakfast we found tinsel behind the very dusty cushions! The one lady we saw who checked us in, served breakfast etc was friendly and very, very busy!

We stayed at the West country Inn for 2 nights. After a very long drive we couldn't check in until 5/6pm and when we got there the door was locked. We rang the bell and after 10 minutes the landlady came down out of breath saying sorry she was upstairs. She said our room number and showed us to our room. First look the room was very nice but really did need a deep clean especially thr bathroom. We wanted to eat in the evening and when we asked for the menu we were told it was just roast that was on the menu that night. Meal was ok but nothing special. Breakfast on both days was not great eggs and sausages were undercooked. We asked if we were able to come back during the day and was told NO. Had to wait until 6pm before we could go back. We were visiting family while we were there and they wanted to join us for a meal and when they arrived they were asked who they were and not made feel welcome. Would not stay here again.

Myself, my husband, 2 year old son and my father decided to eat out whilst on holiday in Bideford, North Devon pulling into the car park of the West Country Inn situated on the Atlantic Highway, Bursdon Moor, Clovelly. It was a little past 6pm and the Inn had not long opened but there were a couple of customers sat at the bar. We ordered drinks and food and waited for the food to arrive. There was no heating on or lit fires so the pub was pretty cold. When the food arrived, my son's pizza charged at £5.25 looked like a supermarket value pizza costing 50p and came with 1/4 tomato 1 cucumber slice and a couple of chunks of iceberg lettuce, the batter on my husbands fish, cost £10.95, was burnt my fathers gammon, cost £12.00 was thin, poor quality and greasy and my burger, certainly wasn't worth £8.95 and I had to share what chips I had with my son. We are not big on complaining so decided to eat what we had, my father settled the bill and we headed back to Bideford. On reaching our accommodation my father asked "do you know how much that meal cost?" and showed me the duplicate receipt. Unfortunately, he didn't check the bill at the Inn and didn't mention the cost whilst we were there. On looking at the receipt, my father had been charged for 2 kids pizzas totalling £10.50 and for 2 burgers totalling £17.90.I attempted to call the Inn and initially the reception was poor and I said I would call back. I tried again and spoke to a gentleman, started to explain what had happened and the receiver hung up. I tried again and the receiver was left off the hook so that I could hear other people in the Inn, and left waiting. I hung up and my husband tried to speak to the Inn, and he received the same treatment. I definitely would not recommend dining here. The food is overpriced, poor quality, extremely bad customer service, cold. Very very unhappy!

Fresh coffee instead of 8nstabt from a machine would be nice. The place is ok as a stop off for food if your passing, otherwise isn't worth a special trip out. However we would not recommend you stay here.We were lucky to have a room out the back.Your other choices are above the bar or over looking the A39.

My partner and I were staying in nearby Hartland this week, and on our way back from a day trip into Cornwall we decided to stop off at this hostelry for our evening meal. The bar was just about to open, so we ordered our drinks and chose our meals from the menu...so far, so good.We asked to eat in the restaurant section as opposed to the bar, as the prices were more restaurant orientated than public bar fare!I had a soup which was ok, nothing special, but ok, the bread that accompanied it was of the sort you buy and then bake yourself, which is pretty poor when you're eating out.My partner had the duck dish, which was mediocre, but again, it was ok.I had a mixed grill that was generous in size, but apart from the steak the other meats were overcooked. The reason for this review however is because of what transpired whilst I was eating my meal.I had ordered a Stilton sauce to accompany my meal and as I was eating I bit onto something hard.It turns out I had a piece of plastic in my food, which being white I hadn't noticed in the sauce, which incidentally was pretty ropey, thin and fairly tasteless. However, I wasn't particularly enjoying my meal and after the plastic turning up I'd had enough! When the plates were collected I showed the lady and I couldn't believe her response.I got no apology, and we were told it was the FOURTH time it had happened! Apparently the cream cartons they use have a flip type top and it was that, that had been in the sauce. They break off we were told, and because they are the same colour as the sauce, the chef doesn't notice!A little later, the other lady came along amd asked if our meal had been ok, so we told her too (they obviously don't converse). She did apolgise, but I purposely didn't ask for a reduction in the bill to reflect the poor quality of our meal, just to see if it would be forthcoming. All we got was the same glib platitudes about the plastic cartons and how they would contact the supplier about it.In short I wish we'd never set foot in the place, it wasn't cheap, and I really begrudge giving hard earnt money to people who simply couldn't give a damn whether their patrons have had an enjoyable experience or not.Avoid this place.Just as an aside, when we were leaving we were asked by a fellow traveller if our meal had been any good ( I think he heard us talking as we walked back to the car)Turns out he was part of a group of four, all in one campervan. He had told them that the four of them wanted to eat and then spend the evening drinking in the establishment, so could they park up in the car park for the night? As it was still only about 7.30pm they would have spent a fair bit of money I'd imagine.BUT, they were told that there would be a £10.00 per head charge to sleep in the van, in the car park!.....consequently they went on their merry way.A lucky escape if you ask me!

Family of five called for meal at 6pm. Landlady looked drunk and unclean but we decided to give it a go as we were hungry after a busy day out. What a mistake, drinks were heavily watered for the kids soft drinks (just tasted of soda water not coke) and the meals were disgusting. When my wife attempted to pay the bill she had to wait ages whilst the drunken landlady flirted with a male customer who was staying there and shouted at her children who were serving in the back room. The toilets were filthy, no toilet paper, and the solution for a broken hand dryer was a dirty and damp towel that had obviously seen the floor several times, placed on top of it. The gents toilet cubicle wash awash with urine, also all over the seat too, it was so bad I had to hold my toddler son suspended over it so he could use it.It's a lovely looking (from outside) pub with a commanding position to make a lot of money from passing trade, but for whatever reason it's being run down. Families like mine will only visit once, but that's once too many for ours. The food was so greasy and such poor quality (expensive too!) that it actually made three of us ill.FAMILIES LOOKNG FOR FOOD AVOID AT ALL COST

We were thrilled to be able to meet up with old friends of my husband that he hadn't seen for many years The West Country Inn was a great halfway point between our holiday base, and their home, so seemed the ideal venue. We should, perhaps have been alerted by the fact that the place was empty apart from our party at lunch time on a lovely late spring day. We were a party of six, and there appeared to be two staff working front of house. Our initial round of drinks arrived one short, which was rectified when we asked for the rest of the round. Between us we ordered three baked potatoes, one steak pie, scampi and ham & eggs. The potatoes had a decent size portion of prawns with them, and fresh side salad. Ham was reported good, though the accompanying egg and chips described as luke warm.' Vegetables on both of the other dinners were left, probably another victim of 'luke warm'. We didn't try the deserts, so not able to make comment about them. I didn't have coffee, but my other half tells me it was hot and 'OK'

Arrived just after 12 for Sunday lunch without a booking but were easily accommodated as there were very few people there. We were a bit apprehensive as on our previous visit the place was packed. The meal when it arrived after quite a wait was very tasty although some of the vegetables were cold. We sat in the bar which was also very cold to such an extent that I had to put my coat back on. The lady behind the bar seemed to be the only front of house staff as she appeared to be manning the bar, serving the meals and clearing the tables on her own. If we are passing that way we will probably pay the Inn another visit.

Arrived for a 12.30 Sunday lunch booking for four (two elderly in-laws, my wife and myself) to find the place deserted - this should have been a warning! Eventually, at nearly 1 o'clock, the nearly cold, boring veg arrived (runny flavourless swede, broccoli, and carrots, plus leeks in cheese source), but we still waited for the meat plates. Three of the orders were small (child's) size and these plates also were cold on arrival. There seemed little point in complaining by now. When we did make a comment at the end of the meal, the waitress had to check with the chef, and returned with the explanation that the plates were 'not hot' so that children didn't burn themselves - this, in spite of the fact that we were a party of senior citizens! Not a good experience and not surprising that the place was almost deserted. I assume that very few make a return visit.

The West Country Inn in Bideford is in a great location. The staff were willing to accommodate 21 of us in the bar area where dogs are also allowed. We were a little less fortunate when it came to the actual meal experience. We were told to order before 6pm so the chef could get organised and get our food out on time. I ordered the gammon which came with a side of chips. The chips came out as the first part of my meal, they were cold, so I sent them back and they were replaced with fresh ones. The gammon then came out, it had obviously been sat under a grill for an amount of time, it was solid! I then sent it back having not eaten any of the onion rings or pineapple that it came with. The chef then sent out another gammon steak (30 minutes later) with microwaved onion rings which had gone soggy as a result. I had also requested peppercorn sauce in the meantime, one of the staff members behind the bar was not impressed by this request and was making complaints about it to another staff member. I was only made aware of this because one member of our party overheard her. The steaks on our table came out undercooked to preferences and peppercorn sauce arrived after the steaks had been finished. The last meal came out an hour and 20 minutes after the order was placed. There were no apologies. Unfriendly and disorganised restaurant.

Ate here on our first night in the area, large party of us and we were glad to get a table. Menu looked fine and the adults in the party were happy. Unfortunately the children were not so lucky as first the burger didn't have any bacon and the waitress was quite insistent that I hadn't ordered it with bacon (I had) and the 3 other children had all ordered macaroni cheese which although it looked promising was basically inedible - it was literally pasta in oily cream with cheese grated on top.I did query with the waitress as to whether the chef had forgotten the cheese in the sauce but she came back and said there was definitely cheese in it! No apology or attempt to make amends despite the fact that they all left most of it. We all tried it and agreed it was just milky, oily, cream - disgusting.

Don't bother stopping here for a meal, we had to wait 90 mins, for a meal for two, when it finally arrived they had forgotten to provide the vegetables to go with the steak and ale pie, which was very chewy. The manageress told another customer who complained that they were lucky to wait 90 mins as other restaurants in near by Bude, you could be waiting 2 hours, The bar waitress Debbie was very apologetic about the wait and very friendly, shame the we had to wait so long.On paying the bill the owner never even apologised about the delay.

Lovely old Coaching Inn on the moors. Have enjoyed meals on saturdays and a nice roast on sundays. My guy and I had a wonderful romantic valentines meal in the dining room as well as our usual meals in the pub area. I love the fire place on a cold winters night

Went here for a meal in August and would never go back again. We were told it would be about a 40 minute wait, wrong, it was a 90 minute wait! We had ordered 2 chicken curries which contained more cauliflower and sweetcorn than chicken, a lasagna which was dry and overlooked and fish and chips and the fish was extremely greasy and soggy. 3 burgers which were ok but nothing special. However the ham, egg and chips was very nice. Staff were not friendly and left us feeling like they couldn't be bothered with us. I had the curry and it was the worst meal I have ever had, even the poppadom's were soggy!

Booked a table for 9 people in the bar area as we had a dog. We were told the wait for food would be 30-45 minutes, which was ok as we weren't in a rush & it wasn't busy, so thought it would be nearer the 30 minute mark ...how wrong were we! 1 1/2 hrs later our food arrived: fish & chips with greasy batter, chicken curry with no flavour but loads of cauliflower & sweetcorn and lasagne which was black on top & just not very nice. Ham, egg & chips were ok, as were the burgers. Comments were made to staff about the long wait for food & poor curry, but there was no real apology or recompense for it. We won't be visiting again.

on our last night of our holiday, we decided to got to the west country inn to round off two lovely weeks in north Devon. As a large family, we have 4 children, they accommodated us well without problems, sitting at two tables. The menu was ok, good enough choice of food. My self and my husband ordered the fish and chips, the fish came so greasy that both of us felt sick well into the next day. My two older children ordered the Exmoor burger, this came undercooked to the point the burger was very very pink on the inside and had to send the burgers back. the staff said sorry, and got a fresh burger cooked, when stated that both burgers were raw they offered to cook a second burger to which we refused, as this has turned everyone off there meal.My two younger ones ordered off the children's menu, they had pizza and a burger no problems with there meal. We also ordered the pic and mix to go with our meal, the mozzarella sticks onion rings and shrimp bites, it wasn't until these ware placed on the table that we were told that they didn't have enough onion rings and had replaced the missing ones with the other two we had ordered. All in all, I feel the staff are ok, surroundings are lovely, but there food is appalling. total waste of £90.00! never again!!

My family and I went on a Sunday for the roast. Great taste, great service, fun atmosphere, large portions and great price. I enjoyed the main meal, beef and pork mix with all the veg you could want, I was full and satisfied. My kids, 5yrs, 9yrs and 12yrs enjoyed their main, they had beef, but tasted our pork and liked it, they then, as kids do, had desert and it was too much for them to finish. The main was great and the staff were fun. We will return for more..
