Tourist trap! Food was nice but absurdly overpriced, £100+ for 4 fish and chips and drinks, crazy price considering you have to collect your own food and it's served in paper trays without proper cutlery. Boutique restaurant price for takeaway food.

I cannot understand for the life of me, why people pay £9 each to walk down a steep winding hill, all the way down to a small bay and a pub 🤷♂️ On the way down, there is a pub advertising a Sunday roast lunch @ £15. On arrival we were informed there were no Yorkshire puddings with the beef…. Good start. The dining area was more like a cheap cafe, as for the meal itself, forget it !! Sorry but Clovelley does absolutely nothing for the £9 admission fee but keep the occupants going 🤷♂️

This hotel/restaurant/Bar & Takeaway is situated right on the waters edge at Clovelly. We called in for drinks & a snack whilst exploring Clovelly. Great location is the main advantage. The area we were in which was like a cross between a bar/café & takeaway was fairly small. We managed to get a table & settled down for 40mins or so. All okay, but nothing to special & although busy it had an odd & very quiet atmosphere 🤔

Just spend a lovely night at The Red Lion Hotel, with both dinner and breakfast in the Harbourside Restaurant. We both had lobster, which was a whopper, beautifully prepared and served. Brilliant setting with breathtaking views, charming staff and great choice of food and drink, all reasonably priced. Very comfortable room (12) with its own private balcony overlooking the harbour. Great place for a weekend break

At the village I think it's only one place to get a hot meal. Food is a bit pricey, but as a part of our daytrip it was definitely worth it. I ordered half portion of fish and chips and it was more then enough for me. The fish was super fresh, nicely done chips and finally tasty tartar sauce, perfect lunch on the coast.

Currently serving a takeaway only service due to Covid however there were very long waits for food after queuing to order. Had to wait outside for over 45 minutes for 2 sandwiches and chips. Had I known the wait would be so long I would not have ordered, as it meant we spent the majority of our time in the harbour waiting outside the Red Lion, which took the shine off our visit a bit. Food was very tasty when it finally arrived though.

The poor barman was running around like a headless chicken when we arrived, and the table had to be cleared before we could sit down. We had booked a table in the bar as the restaurant was full. He was very friendly and was doing his absolute best, but it was rather disorganised and clearly short staffed. The food was ok, but over-priced for what we had - a burger stack and a half sized portion of scampi and chips. Another staff member appeared at one point but made no attempt to say hello or ask if everything was ok, and was clearly talking negatively about another staff member in full hearing of us in the bar. Dessert was eye wateringly expensive for average items, the hazelnuts were stale and we seemed to have one strawberry sliced very thinly between us to serve as a garnish. Not awful, but not worth the effort to walk all the way down to the harbour and back up afterwards.

We booked over the phone before travelling to Clovelly village . It was pretty quiet in there but then it was a 1230 lunch . I had the Sunday roast and the missus had soup and bread . They were really hot and tasty and accompanied by a local pint made for a good lunch . Our waitress was lovely and we had quite a good chat with her ( loved her local accent ) as it was quiet . Certainly enjoyed our meal and a good warm up and dry out from the walk down in the rain . Recommended

Beautiful setting, when you have the weather this location is up there with the best in England. The food was just 'okay', but considering the prices you'd expect a bit more quality. It's very busy so they can get away with it I guess. Terrific drink selection, great West Country ciders and beer on tap. Bar staff were good considering the pressure they were under with how busy it was.

The meals at restaurant are all takeaway due to the covid-19 restrictions which is fair enough although since the lifting of some of the restrictions we have had eaten in several places that have managed to provide an excellent food and service . We had the fish sharing platter most of it was overcooked and dry . I looked for some tartare sauce to make it more pleasant in the bag we were given with the cutlery etc but there was only vinegar. My partner went in to ask if there was any tartare sauce to be told -you will have to go back to the bar and pay for it. I used the toilet before making the long climb back up the cobbled hill , they were dirty toilet paper all over the floor no soap. Obviously not being regularly checked or sanitized .Lazy lazy lazy just because there is no competition . If you go to Clovelly admire the lovely view but definitely do not eat here.

Quite disappointed overall. The crab had lots of bits of shell in it and had been mixed so much it was a paste and so for what I received it was extremely overpriced. The service was quite slow as there was only one person catering for the whole floor and the menu didn’t resemble what was online and so the experience didn’t match what I had expected. However, the view was very nice.

This could be a dream restaurant, nestled in a quaint corner of the divine harbour setting of Clovelly. But for us it was a massive fail for multiple reasons. The inside is uninspiring, with little atmosphere at all. The food was very overpriced, with frozen chips used in a £25 main. The biggest problem however were the flies. Not one or two, but swarms of flies which ruined the experience for us. When we complained we were told there is nothing they can do. They begrudgingly gave us a little discount on the second time of asking and joked that the bar is much worse in the summer, so we probably won't recommend the bar either, which looks a little like a concrete tunnel, scruffy and slightly depressing. Left very disappointed.

The food here was overpriced and poor quality. We paid £8.95 for calamari that was far too thickly coated in what appeared to be breadcrumbs and overcooked. One member of our party also paid £14 for a tiny burger which didn't even have cheese. This is a restaurant that clearly trades solely on its location. We won't be returning unless the food standard improves.

The Red Lion have been offering take out during these uncertain times, we visited this week with family and were overjoyed to find that the pandemic, lack of landrover service and the typical British drizzle seemed to have held the tourists off - we had this beautiful village almost completely to ourselves. The men of the group were positively buzzing at the prospect of £1.50 pints of doombar, served in eco friendly compostable single use pint pots. There was a large selection on the take out menu, and thanks to the near constant fog and sea fret there was also an abundance of outside seating. We had fish and chips for grown ups and children - delicious generous portions. I hope for the Red Lion’s sake that the pandemic doesn’t keep people away this summer, but it was a real treat to enjoy this little village so quietly for a change!

The Harbour is at the bottom of the steep walk through Clovelly and is handy for lunch to fortify the walk back up. We sat outside and had a lovely view of the sea. The beach is not good for walking, all pebbles no sand. We didnt have the best experience at the Harbour as our order didnt make it from the bar to the kitchen. We had to remind the staff several times and were waiting over an hour for our lunch. It was nice when it arrived, but not really worth the wait! I think the final insult was when the food was put in front of us I asked where the cutlery was and was told to fetch it ourselves from inside the pub! Not exactly 5 star service! We were offered a free drink.as compensation for having to wait so long to be served.

We stayed in Clovelly at the New Inn and ate at the Red Lion. All of Clovelly is owned as part of a private estate and it's fair to say that they have a captive audience. When you call to book a table at the Red Lion they put you in the restaurant - this is sort of fine but when you first arrive you then see that you could eat in the bar from a separate, bar, menu - be nice to have the choice when you book for the first time. The restaurant is on the first floor and there are 4/5 tables at the windows that overlook the inner harbour - whilst we had booked, when we went to the restaurant it was early and empty and so asked if we could sit there - only to be told that they were already booked - maybe on making the reservation this could be offered? The restaurant itself is lovely and the service was very good. The food was suburb (so maybe don't eat in the bar!).

Visited Clovelly on a biking tour. Called in here for lunch. Setting and location are beautiful, which did mean it was also busy. We ordered sandwiches - I had the cheese with beer chutney, which was tasty. One of our group tried the fish goujon sandwiches and said it was superb, another said the crab sandwich was "really quite good" - he's a professional chef that will comment on the tiniest fault so this is high praise indeed! Side order chips were good. Only criticism I would make is that I'd like to see mayonnaise, ketchup and so on in bottles rather than plastic sachets. I'd recommend this place (indeed already did to the other groups heading to Clovelly from our event later in the week).

I was disappointed with the food when staying at the Red Lion. We wanted to treat ourselves as a special occasion but found it underwhelming. Service was very slow but staff were pleasant. Evening meal of steak and oysters for £28 per head. £36 for 3 courses so not cheap. I have had much better meals in pubs. Steak not seasoned, tasteless pepercorn sauce. Small handful of big chips. Had better steak from Aldi. All in all just not what we expected. Breakfast took an hour to be served. 20 mins just for somebody to ask if we wanted tea or coffee. When breakfast arrived my muffin for eggs Benedict were raw and soggy and sauce split. Husbunds full breakfast was of poor standard. Agsin staff friendly.Such a big shame. The Quality of the food was acceptable, but this being Pub Food only, the price is high, which is understandable, since they have such a 'captive' clientele [this seems to be the only place to eat in Clovelly]. What a disappointment this was and in one of our favourite places too. All we wanted was a simple fish & chip lunch, surely staple fare at an English harbour village. The service at the bar was all done with no eye contact & very little return conversation. This was compounded by the awful food. The fish was described as Cod, it was like no other Cod that we have tasted before. No flavour, just a solid lump of white meat in a soggy batter. Definitely one to avoid when we next return.

It wasn’t a brilliant experience. The starters took 75 minutes to appear, I only had three oysters which must have taken ages! While we were choosing wine a poor couple were standing in the doorway totally unacknowledged for at least five minutes. We should not have worried as they were served their mains before our starters. The mains weren’t much better. The skate was over cooked, the plaice wasn’t filleted and served with cold charred runner beans. The peppercorn sauce with steak had enough peppercorns for at least four portions. Puds were ok but the fig and ginger crumble was 1.5 figs warmed on top of a crushed ginger nut with some unremarkable ice cream. Wish I’d had The posset. It was part of my birthday celebrations, not good

Eating in the upstairs dinning room was nice and a good view of the harbour front, but inconvenient as you had to go downstairs to get a drink from the bar. I am giving a four, because the location and the beer were great, and also because we passed on the food on offer at the Red Lion Pub. We were served promptly at the bar by very cheerful staff, and were lucky enough to find a vacant table outside on a beautiful sunny day. Its a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy the view, and watch the tide come in. The food menu offers most of the usual pub choices, and seems moderately priced despite the lack of competition. However, after seeing the plates served on the neighbouring tables, (and going back only partially consumed!) and hearing our neighbours quietly grumbling, we decided to give the food a miss. Most of the selection had obviously been in the deep fryer, and nothing we saw had an appealing presentation. We did, however, thoroughly enjoy our visit!

After by passing a couple of coffee shops and a pub on a very steep downhill path through the beautiful village of Clovely we arrived at The Harbour Restaurant. If it had not been for the fact that we had a toddler and heavily pregnant woman in our group, and we were all starving, we would have left straight away to go back up the hill to one of the other eating places. We cleared a table in order to sit together and to try to deter the flies that were all through the restaurant and very unpleasant. Our food, despite there only being 2 hot meals out of the 7 ordered took over 45 minutes to arrive. 2 of the meals ordered were ploughmans one of which was cheese and had to be returned as the cheese was a thin slice of cheddar that was sweaty and floppy! The very embarrassed waiter returned with a better plate of food, but it still left a lot to be desired and at £11+ was very disappointing. The prawn cocktails were watery and tasteless and the rest of the food was of a similar poor standard. The tables around us remained dirty and uncleared throughout our meal which meant we were constantly battling with flies. We paid the bill and walked past three members of staff as we left and were not acknowledged by any of them. It was a very disappointing and unpleasant experience.

Unfortunately (due to it's absolutely beautiful surroundings and village), was full of flies everywhere, all over the food, felt more like a swamp than a restaurant. Plus slower than slow service - with it taking over half an hour for a jacket potato, sandwich, egg and chips and soup and very overpriced. Will definitely visit the village again, but never again for this particular establishment!

We ordered cheese boards and cheesey garlic bread. The cheeses were ok, so were the 4 crackers! A cube of chutney jelly, disgusting. And no garnish. A child could have done better. The cheesey garlic bread was just a roll, halved, with garlic butter and grated cheese that wasn't melted right through! Really disappointed.

This is my review of the restaurant, separate from my review of the hotel. The food here was really very good, perhaps unexpectedly so given that there doesn't appear to be too much competition in this small and thoroughly delightful place. There are lovely views of the pretty harbour, and a pleasant and refined ambience. From memory, there was no music - a big tick for me (which helped nudge this review up from a 4 to a 5). Food-wise, I went for the various fish options and finished with a delicious pudding. There's a good wine list, and the service was friendly and efficient. One can then retire to the lovely pub part of the hotel after dinner for some good real ale or one of their reasonably decent collection of single malts. A lovely experience - I hope to return.

Nice beer, good pasty but slow then slower service. Real shame as we decided not to have another drink and go else where. Top location amazing little pretty nook of Devon.

After a enjoyable walk through the steep streets in clovelly an enjoyable stop for a pint and something to eat

Getting down those cobbled streets deserves a pint. We reached the harbour The Red Lion awaited but it was 10.50. Ten minutes to wait in the sun taking in the surroundings. Lovely views over a pint and the food looked good too but we didn’t partake on this occasion. My partner had a cappuccino and said it was delicious. However, a saucer would have been nice. All in all a nice restful stop.

Ordered lunchtime snack (sandwiches), accompanied by coke and cider. Cider very moreish, sandwiches very average as was the limp salad clearly out of a supermarket bag. Long wait too.

We have previously been here before and had an excellent meal. But oh what a difference a year makes. Our friend who was driving asked for an orange juice and lemonade and received orange squash and lemonade. The service was very slow. My wife ordered for a starter pan fried red mullet with couscous. When it arrived it was cold. Her main was pave of hake and when she asked for a fish knife, she was eventually told that they do not have fish knives , you have to use ordinary knives.!!!!. We have been to pubs and have ben given a fish knife to use when we have ordered fish. Her hake was over cooked and dry. Overall the service was very poor and slow. If our waitress had been on time and motion she would have failed. We like to have a break in between courses, not a holiday. We finished with coffee but the waitress had no idea what a cappuccino was. The cost of the food was over priced and certainly will not be going back again.

When will restaurants learn that if you over price your food you will make customers picky? We enjoyed our meal and it was tasty however as the prices were quite high we began to pick up on the faults; pork was dry, meals were both too salty and I did have to send back my pudding as the tart wasn't cooked. We noticed another table sent back their main meal with the same complaints we had. We had high expectations and they were not met. The waitressing staff were also quite sullen and seemed to only do the bare minimum, I don't think we received a smile from either of our two waitresses for the whole 2 hours we were there. Wouldn't recommend

Called in on the off chance, booked a table for a Sunday roast. The food was delicious, very generous portions, nice friendly service, would certainly recommend, to anyone visiting the area.

Hands down the best Sunday roast I’ve had in a long time. Food was absolutely on point and at a price that is unarguably unbeatable. Brisket beef was to die for, roast potatoes and veg in abundance, cauliflower cheese was so tasty… went for the small plate, glad I did, a feast, you really need to be a big eater to go for the large! Trust me you will not be disappointed. I am guessing the Market Inn is family run, I say this because I found the atmosphere very welcoming and friendly, staff were great and happy to chat. Will surely be returning next time we are in Holsworthy.

We had a lovely cream tea here and sat upstairs, overlooking The Quay, enjoying the view. We had two huge homemade scones each and there was plenty of jam and clotted cream to go with them...delicious. The staff were friendly and the service was good, so we were happy.
