West Brewery, Bar & Restaurant in Glasgow City

We visit West on a regular occurrence as we live in the Templeton flats. Unfortunately we have started going elsewhere now (St Luke’s, the Gate etc) as the staff are awful…they consistently change and have no retention of staff at all. They are poor, the only lady that is lovely is the only one who’s been there a while. Small, brown haired and extremely good. The menu is also absolutely shocking for gluten free, very very limited. How hard is it. It’s also getting worse and they’re one of the most expensive. Doesn’t make sense when other places are much better and cost much less. Sort the above out West and we’ll be back however unfortunately for now we won’t be.

Food was fantastic ! Served by Archie up at the bar, it was his first day but he was so friendly and poured a fantastic pint - clearly a great hire ! Thank you the whole team <3

This is the 1st bad review that I've ever posted, but I feel like I need to. It's unfortunate because the drinks are fantastic and it's a nice spot, but if we had read the reviews before we went, we wouldn't have gone. We made a reservation in the afternoon for drinks and dinner for 2. When we arrived we were told that there weren't any tables, and because we only made our reservation on the day, we couldn't be seated. Apparently all the others had made reservations "weeks ago". Why were we allowed to make one? We're still not sure ...lol After finally getting a spot at the bar, they came over and told us we could have a table. Let me add, they were hosting a wedding. If you read other reviews, you'll see this is a trending point. In my experience, if a venue is hosting a wedding or other private function it is usually closed to the public. West does not operate like this. Their staff was so overwhelmed that I truly feel bad for them. The food was decent but small. Beer and cider were Great! Service was awful, but I believe it to be the operator not the employees. A second drink was impossible, it took 30min and wasn't until we tried to get the check that they decided to make it and forced us to have it. Upon trying to pay, we literally could not flag anyone and had to put on our coats and wait at the front door as if we were skipping the check for someone to let us give them money so we could leave. So unfortunate, as I think this used to be a great spot, and had / has so much potential to be great, but what an awful experience. Maybe on a weekday? Or and afternoon pint it's good? But if you find yourself there on a night when there's another event there..............turn around and leave. Forget about second fiddle, you'll be cleaning up after the band.

Excellent range of beers made to German purity standards along with a selection of wines and cocktails. The restaurant is worth a visit as well. You can book a brewery tour and there is a large function suite which can cater for weddings and other occasions. Their Octoberfest is available to book now

Nice venue with good selection of beers but they need more staff on: two barpersons serving on a Saturday afternoon - the management needs to sort out the rotas!

You'd think a brewery with a bar would be able to serve pints? Nah, 25 minute wait. This place needs to figure out what it is. Is it a bar? Is it a restaurant or is it an events space? Saturdays I find myself here for a pint, simple you think? No, queue out the door just to get drinks. Waited 25 minutes in a queue for a single pint today which is a disgrace. A wedding was on along with bookings in the restaurant and staff admitted that they prioritise those over the bar. Which is fair enough but 25 minutes for a pint!? Never enough staff working and they admitted they can't get staff becuase of the conditions. They'd make a fortune on a sunny day like today if they just had the little outdoor bar open. Instead of queued out the door for the bar. Toilets are a disgrace too. Sink in the men's has been out of order for weeks.

Really couldn’t organise a p**s up in their own brewery. They have you queuing up for a drink, one of their team comes along and says don’t queue just go to the bar and then the barmaid says we can’t serve you it’s for wedding guest only. You turn and it an all for one rather than first come first served. Left and spent our money elsewhere

Love this place, Amazing beer and great food.

Visited 17.08 and was just a bit of a shambles in all honesty. Although a good selection of beers, the food is over priced for what you get on a plate. The bar itself is very "hard" with no soft finishings anywhere meaning the seats are very uncomfortable and not suited to our wives who wanted to move on. The staff were nice however all over the shop with their service as if there was no guidance and it wasn't obvious who was running the show. Unfortunately it was the same last time I visited. Maybe an overhaul is what is required to get this place up to scratch.

Very disappointed on a visit to WEST Brewery yesterday. The Piper's event was on in Glasgow Green ,and there was a Wedding taking place. Our table had been booked in advance so managers should have been able to anticipate how busy they would be. The venue was woefully understaffed, chaotic and overcrowded. The service was poor as staff struggled to cope. By far the biggest issue was the toilets which were unusable due to disgusting behaviour by some members of the public. However when this was reported to a manager we were informed that he "had a list, and would get to it". All previous experiences at this venue have been good which makes it even more disappointing.

Have previously had good experiences which made this all the more disappointing. It has previously been a go to for birthdays and celebrations. Was ridiculously busy and they were continuing to let people in. Toilets were basically unusable. Told us when we went to pay they don’t accept cash. No mention on entry or on the reservation. Food was good Hense the second star but not sure I’ll be back.

Update review on 17th August 2024. Changed from a 5 to a 2 as used online booking service for lunch and received message to await confirmation but it didn't come and no message to update us on booking request. On arrival unable to seat us as too busy! Three of us for lunch and the food was excellent! I had the steak burger with fries and coleslaw which was very tasty. The other two had the currywurst sausages and fries and the other had the chicken burger with fries. Everything was very tasty. The service was good and the staff friendly. Dog friendly. We will return.

Family wedding, staff are very polite and mostly helpful Very over priced Do not except cash for payment of items AS CASH IS KING it meant that tips where given in hands of staff so people where missing out Toilets well mostly clean but the most stupid set up turn round the hand dryer goes off Try get soap and it goes all over you I personally will not return due to no cash card only

I am a big fan of WEST and have been going since it opened back in the late 00s. I live very locally - and it was always my go to, up until last night. I've tried to bring as many people to the place, and show the amazing product. I can no longer sit on my hands though, and not call out the utter shambles that this place has become. The vast array of different beers, nudge ever closer to a bland collection of lagers year by year. Strong beers gradually watered down to squeeze more profits (GPA/St Mungo). The most appalling aspect is the service - be it the ever revolving cast of bar staff (it's not uncommon to see someone starting one week, being the manager the next and gone the following - thats not an exaggeration). Staff are not trained, services is glacial and there's no focus on customer experience. The fact that the kitchen closes at 8PM now, and that they can't wait to get people out at an artistry time without calling last orders puts the tin hat on it. WHY IS THIS GOING ON. WHOEVER IS IN CHARGE needs fired, the for the love of god -figure out why your staff aren't being retained- pay them properly, and train them properly and staff your damn bar. Sure you've got a great beer garden and vibe, but you're on a slippery slope. I won't go back for the foreseeable future- and I'd recommend visitors look at either St Lukes, 226 or Van Winkles in the local area, where their staff seem happy, and are only too happy to help. I did not enjoy writing this review. Get it sorted!

Lovely beer and a nice building but if you're the designated driver it'll cost you £3.30 for a can of Sprite which is behind a joke.

Disappointing! Been visiting for Years. Great staff and service. However today something went seriously wrong. 30 minute wait at the bar and shouted at for making a que. 2.30 hour wait for food to be told that the kitchen was closed and out order had been missed. Here for lunch, it's now dinner time. Will not be back!

Very bad service from waiting staff. Had to ask to order drinks and food. One of the orders was missing (child’s burger) asked if we wanted a pretzel untill the missing food arrived. No pretzel appeared! No apology for missing food. Disappointed

Been to West loads in the past and it's became a running joke with my wife and I that the service is so hit or miss. Writing this as again I felt the service on this occasion really let them down. Had to ask for a drinks order after sitting down for 15 mins, which the staff came back to confirm and still got wrong (15 min wait in-between). We then ordered food, all seemed good but it when it arrived it was clear they had missed my daughter's order as the waiter had to ask us if we had anything else we were waiting for. Told it would be 4 mins, would she like a pretzel in-between, no pretzel was ever brought to the table and 15 mins later the missing burger arrived. They took it off the bill, but very little by way of acknowledging the error. The food is good, the venue is in a good spot but the service is consistent let down.

Decided on an Early Morning Walk as a Reconnaissance Mission for Family with Children .. Walked the Riverside and Park to the Craft Brewery with Restaurant .. Tasted a Pint of Black Stout .. Impressed then had a,Scout inside for Menus, Toilets and Childchanging Facilities .. Not Disappointed by any of them or the 2 Beer Gardens, Dog Friendly and very near to the Fountain and People's Palace and Bus Stop.

What a fantastic experience. The building is iconic, which is matched by great staff, beer and food. We spent s few hours in this incredible brewery and would recommend it to any of our friends. The selection of beers is great and the food we ordered and saw being served to other ms looked and on our part tastes great. A must visit if you like craft beer and good food.

On arrival met by manager ,Thom, who was very welcoming and organised hospitality as promised, thank you. Brewery tour - Annabel was excellent, She was very informative, friendly and knowledgeable, overall she is a great asset to West. Had a meal in restaurant which was thoroughly enjoyable. Overall a great afternoon and would highly recommend .

My original review was extremely positive having been coming here for a number of years. However, ever since Petra has stepped back this place has rapidly gone downhill. The service is shocking even when the bar is fully staffed, and the toilets are an absolute disgrace. My partner and I did plan on having our wedding here but there’s absolutely no chance we would pay the amount they want for the standards and service currently provided. It’s such a shame to see this place being so poorly managed given what it once was.

Great vegan options, very pleased with the fried pickles- very hard to find in the UK. Easy to find, big outdoor seating area.

Lovely authentic venue with really lovely staff who definitely know their stuff. Extremely eager and helpful when you’re trying to choose between their amazing beers. Would definitely visit again!

West is next to my house. Have Nürnberg sausages on the menu, which I adore. For the 2nd time tried to pass a bratwurst cut in two. Had a discussion with the front of house about the sausages. He said they always served that. Funny how I was served the order I asked for 3 years prior.

Table booked for 1:45 for a party of 10. Relatives visiting from abroad so this looked like a good central location with good surroundings which it was. Waited over an hour for the starters, ended up cancelling them and had to chase the main course up again. Although there was nothing wrong with the food, or the portion sizes for me personally, the portion sizes were very small. Hotdogs were no bigger than link sausage. There was a wedding party there so we put the poor service down to that but on talking to some of the regulars it appears the service in general is a bit of a hit and miss. Beautiful surroundings but sorry won’t be back. We were told we only had the table for 2 hours and we were only getting our main course by then.

This place has went drastically downhill. It’s an easy 10-15 mins wait at the bar even when it’s dead. The amount of staff in here who avoid serving at the bar is laughable. You can see them disappear one by one when it’s busy pretending they are doing something else. I’ve never known a place to go from excellent to bad in such a short space of time. Petra may have been overkill but by god she’s missed now as no one cares in here any more.

I wouldnt even put one star. Warning, Dont go here. 10 minutes to get seated in a nearly empty restaurant. 30 minutes wait to order. No warning ahead that it would take time. We asked for our food several times, the answer were, - coming now. Then 1 hour until the food arrives. The Mungo burger didn’t taste well either. So… find another restaurant

Beer is not really good but expensive. Bar itself is so wide that bartenders have issues with passing you a glass and taking money. I asked for cans to take away and got warm ones - bartender refused to take them back. The only nice thing there is a building where it is located.

If I could give a lower rating I would. I have been here various times but had a horrendous experience this evening after being assaulted by the bouncers. I also watched a few other people in my company also being assaulted by the bouncers as they tried to leave. The actions were completely unfounded, unforgivable and unacceptable. I think you need to look at the professional nature of your door team and make massive changes with regards to how they continue your work and how you are portrayed.

Three friends in my party were assaulted by the bouncers tonight, and when I tried to ask what was happening I was filmed by a man who claimed to be “management”. It turns out the initial argument came from a misunderstanding about gender neutral toilets, and I think the establishment needs to reconsider how it treats people who drink here. The bouncers antagonised everyone in our party and and I’m so disappointed that a birthday party ended in this way.

Left West a one star review before for a poor food and service experience. I gave West another chance and came back on a hot day. However sadly still had a bad experience, mainly due to the male bar manager with the blonde hair who has a stinking attitude.

Used to b good... but not this time! Service was shambolic, not enough staff and not joined up. Food came after an hour and the fries were cold!! The kitchen should revisit Germany to refresh themselves to what a schnitzel should be. The food was not good and the beer was also disappointing. Having been several times on visits in previous years, after this experience however, I am not inclined to return.

Nice venue but the slowest service in the world. No need for the queues to be solo long and staff be so slow. No sens of urgency whatsoever from the staff.

Great spot for a drink on a sunny day but have only given three stars because I was shocked at the stingy portion of chips - for £4! Literally just a small handful, didn’t even fill half of the tiny container. Would not order food here again 😡

A great place for food and great beers. A variety of seating options, with a limited but very good menu for the barside and outdoor tables. Advance booking recommended for the restaurant, especially at weekends. The Berliner burger was brilliant, and I'll be back for the chip shop trio soon. TBH , it's worth visiting even just for the pommes and currywurst ketchup 😋 There are also good vegan/veggie options. Staff always friendly and attentive, and the location is (well behaved) dog friendly.

Excellent food and beer, a little crowded at times but worth it

Nice outdoor area and good selection of drinks, but the food was poor. Ordered the vegan version of the loaded fries, ended up with just two out of four toppings due to stock issues. Queried this with staff but was still charged the full amount for the meal, which tasted pretty bad overall.

Fantastic bar and restaurant, the food and beer are superb. Probably the freshest pint you will get in Glasgow.

BOOK WITH CAUTION! We booked our wedding with West Brewery that was due to take place during the COVID-19 lockdown. This meant we had to move our date, we were not given any other options despite the venue being aware that I was very unwell and lost my job. They should of like many multi million pound companies offered us a cancellation under the government's COVID-19 guidelines but instead they forced us into booking another date. We paid the venue £3000 already. We we're left with nothing. Despite continued pleading and attempts at contact with the West Brewery ltd and their owner Petra Wetzel through email and letters. The company has never gotten back to us. They never even acknowledged us. If you are going to book anything with them please be cautious. We had 4 different contacts for our wedding booking over a short time and we're never treated with the care and respect as we deserved as paying customers. They still have our money. We cannot afford to take our complaints to the courts so we have no other choice.

One of the best family and dog friendly places to go to in Glasgow. Amazing fresh food, huge portions and great value for money. We turned up on a Saturday without booking and they were very accommodating even though it was busy. We waited about 15 minutes. Kids menu has a good variety. Also no rush to have the table back which made for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. The side portion of onion rings is well worth the extra.(massive). The beers speak for themselves. Don't think to come here for the food but we will be back.

Why haven't I visited this place before? My new German beer haus. Not only was the the beer amazing, but it was also made in compliance with German Beer Purity Laws. That's important! Lunch was perfect 👌

Fantastic food and drinks shared with great people

Absolutely horrific customer service at West Brewery yesterday. We arrived at 2:45 and the venue only had a few tables seated. We waited well over 40 minutes for a member of staff to come over to take our drinks order despite there being 8 staff on shift. We were completely ignored despite other groups coming in well after us who were seated had drinks and food served to them in this time frame. On 4 occasions my wife went over to a member of staff to ask if someone could take our order to be told "we will be with you in 2 minutes" and other members of staff walking in the complete opposite direction to avoid her. This all was extremely stressful as we had our 5 month old baby with us and we were on a time schedule. We finally got our drinks order despite being there for well over an hour and then had to wait another 20 minutes for someone to come over to take our food order (again despite there being loads of staff in the premises who were more interested in talking to each other). We eventually got our food which was completely underwhelming. The Jager Schnitzel was not traditional. It had no breadcrumbs on it and was literally a fried sausage with little flavour. Literally one of the worst places I have ever been to for the service in my life. All of the staff seemed not interested. Overall we were in West for almost 2 hours for some fried food and 1 beer each which is diabolical. I would understand if the place was extremely busy and short staffed but it was not (the tables were only a quarter full). Will definitely not be back and will not be recommending to others.

I went to west brewery for a charity dog event & parked in the car park where google took you (as I’ve never been b4 ) I had to type my reg into west brewery computer & now have a £60 fine which if I don’t pay goes up to £100 Manager of west not interested given security number which I called & can’t do anything either / email on fine isn’t active to dispute and only phone number email is to pay fine on slip Very disappointed I’m completely frustrated that no one can help & ive done nothing wrong 😑

Fab food and always fab service. Very dog friendly

Went in and ordered a burger and a hot dog. After an hour and people around us getting their food (after half our wait), we decided to just leave. Would give no stars, as didn't even get to try food, but unable to give less that 1. Won't be back. P.s. this is not the first time this has happened to us in there...and the coffee we received (but didn't pay for) was bitter and tasted like luke warm dish water.

I'm very sorry to give two stars (actually I would have liked to give one but considering that the beer and the pretzels are very good, I gave the second star). I've known their beers for a long time and for once I thought it would be interesting to do the tour, so I booked the experience package with tour and dinner. What a huge mistake. The tour was a nightmare, the guide spoke an incomprehensible language, practically as if someone from Naples goes to Milan and the guide starts speaking in strict Milanese dialect, same concept. I've been living in Glasgow for 5 years but it was really hard to understand what the guy was saying. Virtually a waste of money. Finally, we come to dinner. Reduced menu, and that's fine, what doesn't suit me is that if there is already a reduced menu, you should have the foresight to have all the already few dishes offered, and yet not even that. Really really bad. What a disappointment. Moral of the story, if you are not a native English speaker or very well versed in the really tight Glasgow accent, forget about the tour, it's a waste of money.

DJ'd at an intimate wedding and its the perfect space for a wee party. Good choice if looking for an alternative style venue.

Amazing German food!! Such a great space. It is really well laid out, lots of room. They allow dogs in, so if that's not your thing then don't go. Service is OK too.

The perfect wedding venue! My partner and I flew from Canada for this wedding and planned it all over Zoom and email. As you can imagine, we were really nervous as we wouldn't see our venue until the day before we got married. The staff at WEST put our mind at ease (special thanks to Arlene, the events coordinator, for answering our many questions)! The day was busy for WEST due to the Great Scottish Run finishing on the Green at the same time, but that didn't stop them from helping us with any questions or issues and making sure our wedding went smoothly. We got married in the Hop room with 24 guests and it was the perfect size. The staff then moved us out in to the ballroom for a small drinks reception while my husband and I got photos out on the green and they changed the room for dinner. It was quick and efficient and set up beautifully with our small flower arrangements. The food was amazing and I still think about it! They catered to all the dietary restrictions my group had with no troubles. After that, they asked us to head to the back one more time to change it into our reception before welcoming us back for dancing. We are so thankful for WEST hosting our wedding and we would thoroughly recommend them to anyone.

One of the best beer halls around. Excellent choice of beers brewed in house and an excellent ‘German’ based menu for food. Every time I visit, I never want to leave.

Still one of my favourite pubs.

I completely get that it's the busiest time of the year but the restaurant took so many big bookings at the same time. As a result we waited 30 mins for drinks and they didn't come back to ask us if we wanted more in the 2 hours we were there. It took 1 3/4 hours to get food and the food was ok but the whole experience was shambolic. We've been a good few times and it's never been like that so I hope it was a one off.

The food was OK. I had fish and chips. It was nice but far too greasy for me. Service was good.

Beers were great. Food was decent, recommend the salted pretzels and steak burgers. Service was quite slow, around 2 hours to get 2 courses and then settle the bill.

Freezing cold and a glass of wine i.e Small £8.50 won't be back

Fantastic. A taste of real Germany in the heart of Glasgow. Great food. Even greater beer and very good service. Lovely place too.

We arrived with our dog around 5.30. The place was busy, but not full as some tables available. Waitress tried to place us a table where staff would be walking around which with a dog wasn’t ideal. Asked to move to a quieter table which seemed to be a difficult question for them. They did move us. Few drinks and some food, both of which were good. Service was poor tbh. Kinda of felt like our waitress couldn’t really be bothered. It’s clear the staff obviously have their specific roles and they didn’t like being asked to do something out with it. On our last round I ordered a margarita cocktail, but was told they didn’t have any…..so I ordered an old fashioned and my partner a half pint. Her half pint arrived and I was told that they didn’t have the ingredients for an old fashioned. I complained that that was the 2nd cocktail that they didn’t have and why didn’t they tell me this before bringing my partners drink. As I said above, the service is poor, which is a shame as it’s a nice pub with decent food.

Friendly staff, cleansing ales.

Nice spot but the food was disappointing. Very greasy dish (Salmon fillet with brocolli mash and pea puree) they couldn't accommodate an exchange of the very buttery mash to extra brocolli or sauerkraut requested upon ordering. There was no pea puree either.

Tolle Brauerei mit vielen verschiedenen selbstgebrauten Bieren und lecker Essen. Die Inneneinrichtung erinnert ein wenig an ein gutes bayrisches Brauhaus, mache Gerichte auf der Karte auch.

Well.. Service! Waited 10 minutes to get seated.. No one even bothered to speak to us.. The bar staff said that it was reservation only and then the serving staff said the restaurant was closed.. No signage, nothing! Not impressed at all

Looking at the menu and the decor of the venue i had high expectations but what we received was sub standard at best you can't charge such high prices and give customers terrible products Dry beef burger Burnt chicken snitzel Chips tasted like that were cooked in dirty oil Really shocked at the service being served flat beer from a brewery is unforgivable wouldn't recommend this place.

Simply appalling food today. Worst hotdog and bun I’ve ever payed for and at £12 for basically 1 over cooked sausage in a bone dry roll and 1 potato worth of fries I’ll never darken their door again. Beer was ok.

Brewery on the outskirts of town. Impressive building but smaller then one would expect. Good beers.

Service was very variable over the three nights I visited. Food was generally decent quality but the wait staff were not all friendly, one being openly rude. Disappointed overall and will think twice about coming back.

I write this in the hope the owner does something about this. West used to be great before lockdown the staff were on the ball and the food was good. Now however a lot has changed recently the menu has been limited due to supplier issues but even before this the food quality has gone down hill. The food service is also very slow. The staff are friendly but completely unorganised. Orders go missing and you have to wait forever for drinks. Does not make for a pleasant dinning experience. I do hope it can be turned round to something like it used to be.

Enjoyable except the music volume increased with the number of customers. This made it difficult except by shouting to have a conversation

Nice guy served us, but I felt that we were ripped off as prices were very expensive and over inflated. Probably prices have been put up during UCI cycle world championships. Disgraceful and will never be back.

Nos hemos ido por la malísima atención de una chica en la zona del bar. Nos ha te ido 5 minutos esperando para luego decirnos que nos odiamos sentar donde quisiéramos. De verdad, si no te gusta tu trabajo, déjalo. Pero tu deber es atender bien a los clientes

Great place for a refreshing pint and hang around with friends or colleagues, wide selection of refreshments and simple yet great bar food. Amenities kept tidy and clean at all times. Only downside is that cash is not accepted.

Venue was excellent bar staff so helpful, only thing that let the establishment down was the 2 "bouncers". 2 bullies with a badge thinking their the best of the best. I suggest west brewery hire new door staff that treats customers with a bit of respect.

Good beer, the tap room was a bit dingey though, and it'd be nice to sit oot with a glass.

Burger and beer ,you cannae beat it. Nice way to spend a wee Sunday afternoon at the west after a lap round the park with man's best friend. (And that's not the wife) love this place despite prices creeping up quite a bit.

Really disappointed with our food soup was luke warm,sweet potato fries were soggy,chicken wings were saturated in sauces n had very little to no meat on them,I'm not a fussy eater,either is my daughter but we honestly couldn't eat a thing. To make matters worse it's ment to be dog friendly? there is nothing for dogs to eat n aren't allowed to be fed indoors, very disappointing for our pup which we had with us though have to say he was a we ⭐ n sat patiently so well behaved.Staff were pleasant n friendly but afraid because of the food won't be back or recommending West Brewery sorry😟

Good food and good beer, but you cannot eat the full menu outside… Why??? Frustrating!

It's OK. Not that comfy. Big tables and chairs that you need to balance on. Would be much friendlier/ more comfortable if it had a more friendly seating arrangement. It was quite expensive. Dog friendly but only up to a point. Staff were OK. Asked where the WIFI password was, and both staff pointed vaguely to the back restaurant wall. I'm not impressed.
