What a shame . This was my first trip out after lockdown . I took my daughter for lunch . The Houmous starter was average . The tagliatelle was okay but very basic and the garlic bread like a brick . We had to keep waving for service. All the staff were miserable. Asked if everything was okay as we paid . I fedback on the bread , no apology just ‘I’ll let the chef know’ . £66 not cheap for poor basic food . The whole hotel needs investment. It’s tatty and tired . Cracked dirty walls , stained chairs , chipped sinks and fittings in the spa. Such a shame as it has such potential.

Visited The Wellington restaurant as we wanted our last meal out before lockdown to be a special one and we were not disappointed. Covid-19 regulations in place and staff followed them to the letter. the process was explained to us and we were shown to our table in the dining room. Thomas, our waiter for lunch arrived, introduced himself to us and made us feel extremely welcome. The food, drinks and service were all worthy of 5 stars and both me and my wife thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience, looking forward to a night away in Wynyard Hall once we are allowed.

As we had friends over visiting from the USA we decided to do something different as traditionally English, what better than a visit to the Walled Garden followed by a traditional afternoon tea. We arrived 10 minutes early for our tea and were sat in a lovely atmospheric area near to the library, however over half an hour passed by before we were seated and then another ten minutes before anyone attended to us. What followed was quite a pleasant experience with staff polite if a little slow in dealing and serving us. However we were not necessarily in a rush so we just enjoyed the overall experience. I decided to try the Gentlemen’s Selection but found it underwhelming in parts, the half pork pie was of average quality and appeared shop bought. The rare breed sausage roll was delightful as was the ham hock terrine and piccalilli a piece of toast would have been a nice addition to this element. The most disappointing element was the spice cake, it was dry and unpleasant, my tea guests had the traditional tea and were very pleased with their choice, no complaints at all. Loose leaf tea was something that we all said reminded us of our childhood which is a nice touch. We have decided to return and do it again sometime as it was as I said a very pleasant experience and the library where we sat was a great location. However I would skip the Gentlemen’s Selection and enjoy the Traditional option.

The dining room is large, as you would expect and not particularly full on the evening we went. The room itself is quite dark, as is the furniture. It’s obviously cold in winter, given the number of radiators and the 2 enormous fireplaces, but I suspect it’s quite cosy. The food was good, nothing special but perfectly acceptable. Ditto wines. The staff were great, very helpful and happy to advise. Have a look around the rest of the building and grounds if you get the chance.

My boyfriend and I came for a three course meal here to celebrate his birthday and nothing was too much effort. The food was outstanding, we had some gorgeous sourdough bread as an appetizer. Gazpacho as a compliment to start which we actually spilt in which we got offered another after it was cleaned up. All of the food was outstanding and complimented by the wine. The waiters had a great depth of knowledge about the food and wine. Couldnt thank them enough for the exceptional service, nothing was of trouble and they made you feel really special. Such good value aswell for the quality of food you get

We’ve been here a couple of times now for Easter Sunday lunch. The surroundings are palatial and the food is very nice, but on both occasions the service has been grindingly slow. This time we decided to skip dessert as we didn’t want to wait an age for another course. It’s a nice place, but due to the very slow service we won’t be coming again.

Due to the occasion we stayed at the hotel, some in the main building and the rest in the cottages... we got picked up (free of charge) and taken to the Wellington restaurant. We stayed at the maple wood lodge (with hot tub) the driver was friendly and polite. The service showing us to the table was professional and in a manner to make you feel special, we had a choice of three menus, and the staff I have to say, we exceptional, they engaged with everyone at the table and even the kids (4&6) and made they welcome. They bent over backwards to make sure all was in order from drinks menu, to kids food menu and went out of their way to make sure the service was first rate. The food was good, I have had better but not by much... even when food was not available, they offered alternatives. All in all an excellent experience, which lead to a memorable night as we had organised balloons and presents to be delivered to the table at certain points of the night which made the night exceptional. As I said the food was good, but the service and interaction of the staff made it exceptional. Menu is there for the ‘safe eaters’ burgers, fish and chips, etc to the bold, venison and game, something for everyone... will eat there again and not boo pricey for a special occasion!

My family dine at the wellington restaurant frequently and it is usually nice. Very disappointed after our lunch on Christmas Day at over 100 pound a head- we were left very unimpressed. We were greeted upon arrival and then left in an empty room to hang up our own coats and then eventually asked to sit while they sorted out the main table- all very disorganised. Other tables were served appetisers but they did not come round to our table. Turkey lunch was very very disappointing- bought in ‘turkey roll’ with no fresh vegetables and one potato, didn’t taste good at all. Asked for a bottle of wine and it was plonked on the table for us to pour on our own!! Overall very poor experience, bad service with staff who clearly aren’t trained properly and disappointing food- a real shame as it is such a lovely setting in the restaurant but sadly will not be returning next Christmas- when spending over 550 for a meal I would eat expect a lot more! Really needs a good manager who knows how to run a restaurant properly as at the moment it’s not meeting it’s full potential.

We dined here recently on a saturday night and were disappointed with both the service and the quality of the food. We think saturdays are a problem for this restaurant because a big wedding was being held at the same time and it was obvious to us that the wedding came first in terms of both food quality and service. The service was very slow to ,say the least and the quality of both the starters and the main course left a lot to be desired. If this restaurant is going to charge high prices the quality of the food on offer needs to improve.

We visited with friends from 6.30pm for a 3 course meal from the market menu. The service and food were excellent. Between us we had a good selection from the menu. All courses tasted lovely we also had pre-starters and pre-desserts included to ensure a wonderful experience. The house wine both red and the white were good and reasonablely priced. We also enjoyed a bottle of prosecco. We sat the the lounge after the meal to relax with a drink before heading home. All staff were professional and friendly. This was so much more than I expected from the 'party' nights at Christmas. And we will definitely visit again soon I'm so glad we chose to try this for dinner. Dress was smart, the decor was nice and the hotel and dining area was spotless. Plenty of parking available and it had a disabled access ramp to the front of the Hall.

I rang the Wellington restaurant 7 times today to try to make a booking for a school reunion next week. The phone was unanswered between 11am and 7pm. I finally got through to reception after the third call and was given a wishy washy response to how busy they’ve been in the restaurant. I wasn’t buying that, given that I’d rung at various times during the day. Maya from the restaurant rang me back and said they’d been really busy due to the good weather. I pointed out that 7 calls during the day and over mealtimes should have prompted some response. She said that she only came on at 2 but hadn’t had a minute to answer the phone! I asked if the owner would be happy to know that the staff can’t take bookings because they are too busy to answer the phone. She said Yes, yes he would!!! Incidentally, the website offers no facility to book lunch online. How on earth can this hotel survive when staff are too busy to answer the phone to take bookings?

Used the Wellington Restaurant a couple of evenings whilst staying in the hotel. I found the menu somewhat limited, although basically catering for all tastes, but OK. Our choices on both evenings transpired to be very good indeed, well cooked, well presented and tasted fine. The staff were friendly and efficient without exercising very much initiative. We did not receive a check back or have our glasses refilled. Neither of which bothers me but might demonstrate a slight lack of training or supervision. The restaurant is simply wonderful, with plenty of space between tables, a nice outlook if by the window, or otherwise plenty of historical or architectural aspects to engage your interest. For those reasons alone, it is worth a visit.

New Year's Day lunch booked for 2.45pm at Wynyard Hall, and it was a total disaster. We had high expectations having attended for the previous 2 years on New Year's Day. Sadly, on this occasion the standard we had come to expect fell very short of those expectations and, therefore, impacted on the overall experience we had. If yesterday had been the first time we had attended such an 'event' it would not have impressed us in the least as in the previous 2 years which had been excellent and the food in another league! Firstly, on arrival we had drinks at the bar. On previous attendances we had been able to sit at a table whilst waiting to dine but this year there were only bar stools (4 if I remember correctly) which was inadequate for a party of 8. The ambience was good due to the excellent pianist it has to be said. After drinks at the bar we eventually had to ask if we could be seated at our table. Once seated in the dining room, we were (eventually) offered the menu to select our chosen courses (although we had already perused it while at the bar). We were all disappointed to note that the menu was headed 'Sunday Lunch' and not 'New Year's Day Lunch' as in the past. The crayfish and prawn cocktail dish was lacking in crayfish and the prawns were more like shrimps and served in exactly the same style of glass used for shorts drinks which were awkward to eat from! Most of the party chose the beef option for their main course; the beef was poor with lots of gristle and anaemic-looking fat surrounding it. Then it was 2 hours before we had pudding. Most of us chose the sticky toffee pudding which, overall, was satisfactory but, unfortunately, one of the party almost cracked her tooth on what appeared to be a piece of stone from a date! The Manager was most apologetic about this and we appreciate these things can happen from time to time but attention to detail should have prevented this.

Whilst chatting over drinks we perused the menu and orders taken. We were then taken into the dining room and shown to our table by our charming waitress for the evening. Having previously eaten at the restaurant a couple of times and attended other functions I've got to say this is by far the worst experience we've had in a long time..The occasion was for my mother-in-laws 70th birthday and we had guests visiting from Leeds area. Tbh, the welcome was luke warm, the receptionist just told us 'the restaurant is round there', not the usual 'please follow me'.We found our own way to the restaurant and introduced ourselves, the waitress seemed unsure as to what to do with us as some of our party were not present, we asked if we could sit in the lounge until the others arrived. We ordered some drinks and waited, the others turned up and a different waitress asked about drinks for them but only managed half of them, and I had to ask her back twice..A waiter then proceeded with 2 different menus for 8 of us. After struggling for ten minutes my wife asked for more, at this point we were told we all had to choose off the same menu, something to do with separate kitchens, maybe they've not heard of communication, I'm not sure...We were served with an amuse bouche, which when present seemed a little strange, four were served with stands and little spoons with a ramekin dish, four just served in the dish, strange for a place of this standing... The starters were served and were Luke warm at best, and to make matters worse, half the main courses were brought out 1st and the others took a few minutes longer sand again the food was like warm.During the meal we had a few rounds of beers, unfortunately there are only bottles served, but these were served warm and I did bring it to the attention of the waiting staff but warm ones were still supplied, so much so that I was forced to attend the bar myself and ask for a glass of ice, again my wife complained to the bar manager, who did manage to find us some cold ones.. I would've thought at some point he would of ventured over to the table to apologise but no this didn't happen...Although throughout the meal there were some nice touches I've got to say the service and standard of this restaurant was poor to terrible at best..Couple of little things -bottle of estrelle dam £5 each -glass of Chardonnay £11 each -bottle Sauvignon blanc £29 -soda water small £1.90After taking everything Into account and the bill coming in at close to £400, I think next time we'll eat in the local pub where the service and the food is of a much higher standard.Maybe the Hall should invest in some more experienced staff and not rely so heavily on casual staff.. We won't be returning anytime soon!!!

We booked the Wellington Restaurant as a treat for our Daughter's Graduation. We had recently stayed at the Hotel on a 'Steak and Share' deal and we were both suitably impressed with the service and the quality of the restaurant (unable to upload that review as I am unable to load more than one Hotel review every three months). We arrived early as the Ceremony wasn't as long as expected, the staff said this wasn't a problem and we were shown to our table. Menus presented by a charming and attentive waiter and drinks ordered. Our party really enjoyed the meal, the Wild Boar Scotch Egg starter is a meal on its own, superb taste and egg cooked perfectly. We took my mother who is 90 next week, she said it was the best Sea-Bass she had ever tasted, bless her. I settled for the Haddock tail, all I will say is, it must have been a massive fish!! Extremely light batter covering the whitest fish, cooked perfectly. We couldn't find room for desserts but settled on coffees, again hot and fresh.I have seen negative comments about Wynyard Hall and The Wellington restaurant but personally, I cannot fault the Staff, food or surroundings. We have visited on numerous occasions and I have worked in the Hotel as a videographer at weddings and I always make a point of asking guests about their experience and I have yet to hear a negative one. Our dining experience was worthy of my 5 stars, not only for the superb food but also for the way the staff conduct themselves, charming, attentive and very friendly. Sir John and the Management Team should be extremely proud of the attention to detail and service guests receive at Wynyard Hall and the Wellington Restaurant. We are looking forward to taking some friends for a Christmas meal in a few weeks time as they have never visited Wynyard Hall.

We booked the 5 course £50pp taster menu and were left somewhat disappointed. The food was lovely but at an average of £10 per course they were far too small, three of the courses only being one/two mouthfuls at most. One course would have been more filling but it was octopus risotto that left a chalky beefy 'oxo' taste in your mouth that was less than desirable, I tasted the rice but couldn't eat it.The staff were lovely and attentive but didn't know any answers to questions we had, we asked if there was an option to add a wine flight to the meal and they looked confused so we just chose a bottle. The dessert was great but we ordered a cheese course because we were still hungry. I understand the idea of a tasting menu but it wouldn't be unreasonable to have one or two of the courses being a bit more ample and as far as a seafood course goes a lighter fresher dish would surely compliment the menu better?I don't think this was value for money, but would be happy to pay more if the food was up to standard, even if the main course was adequate, we had the tiniest piece of lamb and it was just so disappointing, I wish we had ordered from the menu in hindsight as we would have got more value for money looking at the food people around us were having. We have also visited other places and had tasting menus such as The Raby Hunt and had much better experiences which is a shame because Wynyard Hall is very local to us.

The building is spectacular with large paintings hanging and antique furniture, very grandWe were shown to our table and asked whether we would like the A la Carte or Brasserie menu, we looked at both and decided on the A la Carte. We also ordered a couple of cocktails which were to die for. Before our starters arrived we were sent out a small mushroom mouse each followed by this Japanese drink in a shot glass that was vinegar based (I didn't think I would like it, but it was gorgeous) along with some homemade warm bread buns with different flavoured butters. Built on outdated splendour. The food is showy. Could look like something from Master Chef but the quality is mixed. The little touches and friendly (if a little naive and undertrained). The selection of breads were nice and the routine spiel charming. We were there on a Friday night and it was very quiet. For afternoon teas it is packed and to be fair they do those very well. I liked the strange tea that tasted like hot soy sauce but didn't like the strawberry dessert.

I came for afternoon tea on Friday 17th June with some friends. We arrived on time but waiting 10 minutes to be seated as the waiter was already dealing with someone. There seemed to be staff everywhere but not much being done or people being seen to (there was 2 young lads looking for a lighter in the same place?!). We were eventually seated and given menus. 10 minutes later someone came to take our drinks order, the same chap that seated us. He must have been the only one actually working. He must have forgotten the drinks, not surprisingly being the only one working, as we had to chase the order another 10 minutes later. The same chap came with our drinks shortly after and was very apologetic. The chap that was seeing to us was lovely, it was the service speed of everyone else that weren't seem to be helping him which was poor. Overall, the food was lovely, the service, not so.

We booked a table for 7 of us to celebrate my Mother's 70th Birthday at Wynyard on 22nd May as she said it was one of her favourite places in the area, but the service was so poor that it ruined what should have been a special day. When we arrived at the Restaurant, the member of staff at the reception desk ignored us while she appeared to be doing some paperwork. After this went on for some time, I asked if we could be taken to our table, but was asked (in an admittedly polite tone) if we "could just wait a minute". We then waited a fair while longer as she took the paperwork over to a colleague working on the bar to discuss whatever she had been doing. When she returned she booked us in (without apology or explanation for the wait) and then handed us over to a member of the restaurant staff to take us to our table, where the lack of service continued.Having been seated at our table for some time (and watching people who had arrived after us having their orders taken), we only managed to get someone to take our order by blatantly catching their attention. Then, as no wine/drinks list had been offered we had to get someone else's attention to request it, and also saw other tables being offered bread rolls before the starter course, but were not offered any ourselves and had to ask for them too. Our drinks then only arrived after the starters were finished and being cleared away. Just to continue the general experience, we then had to ask someone for the dessert menu.We were not being impatient as we wanted to have a nice relaxing time, and I know this might not seem like a major set of issues, but when you have specially travelled nearly 200 miles for a special celebration and are paying £30 per head for a pleasant (but not outstanding) Sunday lunch, you would at least expect that the premium is for the service. However, while the staff were consistently polite, the actual level of service received was worse than you get in a typical Pub restaurant.Sadly, instead of enjoying herself, my Mother spent more time apologising to us because she had asked to come to Wynyard for her Birthday. To round it off, we had mentioned that it was a 70th birthday when we made the booking and the member of staff who took it said that they had made a special note; surprise, surprise, that was ignored too.POOR SERVICE and OVER-PRICED.

It wasn't a package but it should have been. Although overall it was very good I felt that there were a few things that let it down.- I had not received any confirmation of my spa treatment or dinner booking-The masseuse although good, was very loud and this let down the ambience during the massage, there was also a draft blowing through the door which made me chilly and tense.- The 'restaurant' did not feel like a restaurant and a hotel of this grandeur could have done with a bit more customer service.- We were only offered one menu while the couple next to us were offered two-The staff all looked like they were trying to do the 'posh service' but failed on many occasions and made all sorts of hand gestures to each other over the room which was off puttingGood points though the food was really good and the little breads were cute. Butter could have done with being softened. Room was a bit too echoey and quiet and made conversation a little awkward.

We went as a group with 3 young children (admittedly probably not the best idea) to celebrate a birthday. My first gripe was that they don't do a kids menu so the option was anything from the main menu but as a smaller portion, now my children may be fussy but they are not a fan of lamb or cod in fancy sauce, however we battled on.....The service was hit and miss, we seemed to have at least 6 different (young) waiting staff that perhaps needed a bit more training in how to get an order right. The food other than the Yorkshire pudding was lukewarmThe setting was very grand and ideal for a wedding but maybe a little over the top for a Sunday lunch when there are more cosy (and cheaper) places to eat.

Enjoyed breakfast the morning after a wedding after a lovely overnight stay in Elmswood Cottage. We all enjoyed a full English breakfast Service was a bit slow as I think there was only a few members of staff on but that wasn't a problem as we were in no rush and was worth the wait. There was a lot to chose from on the menu along with pastries, cereal and fresh fruit and it wasn't an issue when we asked if our order could be amended. Our only comment was that the toaster was quite slow.

From the moment we arrived and were greeted at the door - then shown personally to the Wellington Room - this felt like a special occasion. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and professional, the food - and champagne - were gorgeous. We would definitely like to return and would thoroughly recommend the afternoon tea to anyone considering it.

The Hall is a very grand place. Wellington dining room has an ambiance of bygone days. The chairs are comfortable and tables placed apart for privacy. It is also rather cold. The staff were friendly but some inexperienced and others patronising . The food was nouvelle cuisine but poorly executed with tough meat and was cold. Additional vegetables ordered as a side were the same two as on the plate. Portion size was good, presentation pretty, but flavour missing. The menu was interesting but flavours muddled even on paper. mostly its execution was bland.

We booked a table in the Wellington restaurant at Wynyard Hall. However, when we arrived, our table was actually in the Brasserie. From a limited menu, my wife selected the battered haddock tail & I chose the 10 ounce steak. We were disappointed with the food when it arrived. The haddock was covered in a soggy batter & the fish was not of particularly good quality. We could really have done better at our local chippy. My steak looked quite a bit smaller than the 10 ounces advertised & was quite chewy. The Chablis we ordered was very nice. We do not envisage repeating our visit any time soon.

Visited here as part of a DBB package at the hotel for my birthday. We were taken to the library for drinks before ordering our meal. Had a choice of the a la carte or brasserie menu - opted for the a la carte and we weren't disappointed! After ordering we were taken through the the Wellington restaurant which is very grand! The breads and gazpacho were very tasty! Had a couple of issues with the wrong food being sent out but the staff were very apologetic and sorted it out straightaway - it didn't spoil the night. The beef fillet with wonton and wasabi pea was delicious - it would normally come medium rare but I asked for it to be well done due to being pregnant. It was very tender. The chocolate aero dessert was lovely and all of the food was beautifully presented. We'd definitely eat here again!

Leaving review for my godparents, bought for them as a gift to enjoy! They loved the afternoon tea, drinks was a little expensive but they both enjoyed it overall but on their return to collect their coats one had gone missing... Someone else had only took the wrong coat on their way! Not a very good system, in fact there wasn't any as anyone can take any on their way out... A little disappointed for a place like wynyard hall, not even a tag was given out to make sure u can't take someone else's!

We had our New Years Day lunch at Wynyard as we have done for quite a number of years and in the past never been let down !! However this year was terrible . The situation was made worse because I told my Dad how good it was because he wanted to treat us having lost our darling Mum suddenly in November ! The menus was so limited and certainly nothing for someone who prefers simple food like my Dad ( Older people do ) we were a family of six five of us had Smoked Salmon , the most unusual I have eaten , not please tell to the pallet at all and the presentation was nill , my brother in law had the soup and said it was very nice. Four of us had the beef as a main course , we should have sent it back it was cold and hardly cooked ! My Dad & niece had the Chicken there was so little on their plates I was embarrassed . For dessert we had various thing my sister had the cheese board you can't go wrong with that as for the rest of us we couldn't believe what was put in from of us no presentation at all and from my perspective they were not made in house by a chef ! Overall dreadful my Dad wouldn't let us complain so he paid his bill all £350 including a tip ! Unfortunately I am writing this from my bed , unfortunately I developed intense tummy pain less than twelve hours of having my meal , followed by sickness and what ever else , I thought I was coming down with the flu until my sister rang the next day to both her and my brother in law had had similar symptoms ! I contacted the hotel and spoke to a manager , he suggested I take a stool sample to my Doctor !! So as you can understand I feel pretty upset that I had to cancel the rest of my weekend ! I will wait for my results ! Thanks Wynyard .

this was my second visit for afternoon tea. The overall experience is very good for a special occassion. However, my feeling on both visits were that the experience would have been better with more savoury than sweet dishes on offer. I don't know many people today who sit down & consume two scones, & several cakes in one sitting. Perhaps reduce these & offer more sandwiches, savoury flan etc. Looking around the diners, it was evident that other people felt the same way as the cake boxes were being given to most of the people around us to take home the excess cakes. The surroundings & ambience of Wynyard Hall is delightful & well worth a visit. The staff are very pleasant & helpful but afternoon tea for two is just a bit too much to digest.

I had Afternoon Tea here with 2 family members. I emailed Wynard Hall to ask if they could supply vegetarian options, for my sister. This was very easy to do (when booking online you may add any notes to your booking) and we were given a plate of seperate vegetarian sandwiches, which my sister enjoyed. If I was to be really fussy I would suggest maybe a little more excitement in the vegetarian sandwich options and presentation, as the normal sandwiches are presented on different types of bread and wraps, however the vegetarian are just finger sandwiches. The tea & coffee menu you are given upon arrival is beautiful. Great selection to chose from. Cakes and pastries are presented wonderfully and are very tasty! 4 different types of dessert , and 2 scones with jam and clotted cream. The overall experience of this Afternoon Tea is fantastic, and I have had Afternoon Tea in a variety of places but Wynard Hall is second to none. The rooms are so well maintained and an absolute pleasure to be in. Beautiful to walk around inside and out. Staff are fantastic. Greeted & seated by a very friendly gentleman and then served by 2 polite and smiley young ladies. This is the 2nd time I have been & I will certainly be returning. Thank you!

Had a lovely first visit to Winyard Hall to celebrate my wife's birthday. The waitress asked if it was a special occasion,so when the stand of sandwiches and cakes came out with a birthday sentiment written in chocolate that was a really nice touch. The cakes were delicious, but, the egg shells filled with the passion fruit mousse were fabulous .The waitress was attentive and extremely pleasant. The cocktails are a bit expensive but for an occasional visit ok. We would definitely recommend Winyard Hall for afternoon tea and we will certainly be back.

Having been to this restaurant many times before I was looking forward to seeing the new refurbishment, I was not overly impressed as I in fact I preferred the original decorations, I thought it a little bright, also there were no tablecloths, I always think this is essential to the look of a place. Let me start with the menu, although it states a fixed price for a two or three course in fact when you look at it, all but two of the mains required supplement of up to almost £5. This was also the case with the starters. I find this very wrong! why a fixed price when in fact it clearly is not! It appears the restaurant is clearly trying very hard to improve its status in the area, all sorts of complementary items were sent out "from the chef " which where carefully described to us in great detail, even the bread! While this is all very nice the waiters seem to be overzealous in telling us how fantastic it all is and "how the chef does it I don't know" and almost asking us to let them know how lovely it all is. Another thing, too many different people where attending to our table trying to top up the wine when someone else had just topped it up! A bit of overdoing the " is everything ok sir ". We practically had no time to ourselves to talk. The food itself was quite nice overall but dare I say it, it's all a bit too pompous for my liking. Overall they seem to be trying very hard if not too hard to make you feel you have had some really great food and have just dined in a on the up modern restaurant.
