What a delightful bar we found on our first visit to York. Such friendly staff and customers-we felt like old friends very quickly. No food service but not needed with such well priced drinks. If you are staying nearby do yourself a favour and drop in.

Typical old style English pub with lovely staff and atmosphere. Only drinks are served. It is like being back to half a century ago. No Digital and electronic devices policy. If you're looking for a place to work at your laptop with a mocha latte, that's not the place for you. Instead, go to Wellington inn, enjoy a cheap good pint, nice chats, chill and boardgames. I love this place

Warm welcome in pub full of character; great to have real fire too. Old Brewery Bitter at 3 quid is such a bargain these days. Good to have card readers now; not sure if policy of no electronic devices is realistic in 2024, maybe could just encourage people to put them away rather than a total ban.

Would have loved to have left a positive review but as our children (10 & 15 years old) were not allowed to sit in the pub and were only allowed to sit in the garden, we left. This was a Thursday afternoon at 4pm and the pub was virtually empty. Obviously this is not a family friendly pub.

Definitely my first ever visit to this fantastic and traditional back street local. Both Jorvic and Paulicarus loved the friendly welcome. A front bar and two side snugs with real coal fires. Some outside seating in the rear yard where you find the toilets. ( bet the mens were once open air!) A Sam Smiths pub selling excellent Old Brewery Bitter. A no modern tech rule so no inside photos allowed...Jorvic might have cheated when the lovely lady was not looking. Would love it to be my local. Had a pack of the best prawn cocktail crisps ever, Lister's Yorkshire farm.

Absolutely feels like you are in the year 1851.. ..as it was when it was built as an original Coaching Inn, but now with electricity ...well worth a visit.....@ 10 minutes stroll from the City Centre.....this pub is packed with nearly all original interiors, and are becoming rarer and rarer ..nice friendly and informative landlady....as with all Samuel Smith's Pubs, mobiles, iPads, and laptops not allowed to be used inside the pub, but ok in the rear yard.....sometimes no bad thing in this full throttle world we live in.....

Small Sam Smiths pub set in a row of terrace houses leading to or from the river depending on your direction of travel. It's on a walk crossing the bridge at Clifford's Tower, along to Rowntree Park, then cross the pedestrian and cycle Millennium bridge (seats on the bridge) and back up the river towards town. Three rooms that are proper old pub decor and a sheltered small garden. Usual Sam Smiths beers on tap and a rotating selection of bottled beer. I had the chocolate porter, not too sweet and delightfully chilled on a 27 degree day. Food limited to crisps and nuts. Worth the walk for a glimpse back in time. Follows the Sam Smith code of no digital devices - talk to each other - and NO foul language.

I love Sam Smiths pubs. I've written here in depth about these pubs before so I'll just stick to the charm of this place for now. Open fire in snug? Check. Locals installed reading newspaper and chatting about the good old days? Check. Cheap ale and no-nonsense landlady who'd most certainly tell you to "get ait mah pub!" if so needed? Check. I'll gloss over the slightly weird feeling you get being in a non digital domain but being watched over anyway by cctv in every room (irony not lost on most who visit here I guess) and say my own rose tinted specs could miss this detail in favour of the warm fuzziness you feel drinking here. I'm worried of course that she'll go under due to the draconian rules and hence low punter foot fall needed to be avoided to keep this brewery afloat but if money really is too tight to mention at the moment then get the f over there now and save some money as well as saving these august establishments. Hold on... that's language that's likely to get me thrown out of here isn't it?

I've been to this pub many times over the 12 years I've lived in York and its usually been really friendly and welcoming. I'm sad to say that the atmosphere tonight was horrible. Not sure what was going on in there. I used to visit for the nice atmosphere, but safe to say I'll not be going in there again. There are other really good pubs nearby where you'll be made to feel welcome. It's a real shame as this used to be a lovely pub.

Fancying a change from the City Centre combined with a cracking Riverside Walk with a Roaring Fire, A Warm Welcome and a cracking pint of Ale at the end?, If that sounds good just head down to Ouse Bridge, Go down the steps towards the York Arms (York famous flooding pub) and keep on walking straight on for about 15 mins towards The Millennium Bridge, The streets that go down to the River helpfully have signs at the Riverside path end and just head up the half dozen or so steps when you reach Alma Terrace and smack bang in the middle of the row of houses on the right you'll see the pub sign which marks The Wellington Inn, It's a classic 3 (small) roomed terrace and if its Autumm/Winter or even a cold spring day you'll immediately be delighted to see and smell a Roaring Fire, It really is just a converted house but has a timeless feel and a geniality which any true pub lover will warm too, If its summer there's a compact but pleasant but compact outside area and even has a converted stable now acting as a

Very disappointed with this place, I normally love Sam Smith's pubs but this was a serious let down. Called in on a Monday afternoon and there was no bitter available at all either hand pulled or keg. After getting drinks and sitting down in a small side room, the barmaid kept walking past the entrance every 2 minutes looking in. When looking at a cycle map on my phone I was immediately told to put it away and shown a poster on the wall banning the use of of anything digital. While I understand 'rules are rules', I don't appreciate the constant surveillance by the manager, this is 2021 York not 1950's Moscow. The owner of this brewery seems hell bent on losing customers and he's going the right way about it.

Great place but depends on who's behind the bar! A certain woman was so miserable and unhelpful, made you feel awkward for asking a basic question about alcohol and crisps. " I don't drink alcohol so I don't know" or sigh "I don't know". One would think if you chose to work behind a bar you would try to learn some basic knowledge about alcohol in general. If you didn't want to learn then try not to act as though the customer was been a nuisance. Not to mention working behind a bar requires you to deal with the public, so you would hope common courtesy would play a part in your role. In this case sadly it was not.

What an absolute gem of a place, this could be my new favourite pub in York. It is in a residential street yards from the river. Great staff and the pub itself is so what a pub used to be and still should be in my opinion. Lots of little rooms off the main bar each one as nice as the next. There was a few cyclists in when we were in which is usual for this place. I cant wait to go back and sit and chill. The outside space is great as well with some lovely plants and a bike shed. The toilets are outside as once was more common years ago. I highly recommend anybody to walk down and have a beer or few.

Very classic English pub. The beer there is bitter and it is excellent. Totally different from something one usually tries. It is not a bar where there is music and people look at you when you enter since everyone knows each other. But that only adds a traditional touch that is super interesting.

We went into the Ivy not knowing anything about it but it looked inviting from the outside and it was cold and rainy and an awful weather-wise day. How pleasantly surprised we were. It seemed to be snooty and stuffy but wasn't. Beautiful atmosphere and the food was delicious. My friend had the 1917 Menu of starter and main: Salmon Rillette with avocado, salad and rye bread and main of Shepherds' Pie. I had a starter of roasted scallops with creamed spinach and potato puffs. The cost: no more than what you would've paid in a neighborhood cafe. And the rose colored ladies' bathroom is beautiful!
