The fish and chips we had were second to none. My husband, who doesn't often praise food, said that it was the best fish and chips he had ever had, praise indeed. The waitresses was charming and very helpful. We will be back when we are in the area again.

Excellent fresh. and tasty takeaway fish and chips whilst on holiday in the area. Parking is available in front and behind the restaurant.

We visited the restaurant at lunch time and had the set menu.... cod, chips, bread and butter, side from choice (mushy peas) and drink.... all for £13.50. Portion size very good. All cooked well, hot and fresh. Service friendly and helpful. Restaurant, beautifully clean and comfortable. We really couldn't fault it and have to say it's one of the best fish and chip lunches we've ever had! Oh and for an extra £3.45 there is a large choice desert menu! We were very full and really didn't need a pudding but we had one anyway. Excellent. We will definitely be back!

If I was ever to open a fish and chip shop I'd pop to this place and copy everything they do because this place have got it absolutely spot on. Firstly I had a lovely warm welcome when I walked in. Clear menu and prices easy to see. Average prices for a chip shop. I ordered 2 cod and with chips, a jumbo sausage and chips and 2 kids meals which came with drinks and 2 curry sauces. £47. I helped myself to the drinks and waited in a comfy seating area and in the middle was a large table with plenty of cutlery, napkins, condiments etc. I observed the efficant staff in the spotless kitchen working like clock work. One staff tending to the restaurant orders while the other for takeaways. I watched as the chef cooked the fresh fish and staff gave it a couple of minutes to rest to let the grease naturally fall off before serving. I watched as the chef checked the temperature of the sausage to ensure it was cooked and the food was all nicely packaged. The taste - absolutely delicious. The fish was gorgeous and the batter was crisp and perfect. Chips were delicious and the curry sauce was nice and thick. Well done.

They are the worse fish and chips I have ever eaten,well actually we didn’t as they were greasy,very thick batter and full of oil!!!! Don’t waste your money people.

Popped in for lunch with my sisters. Food was fabulous as was our host! Fish and chips cooked to perfection and one of my sisters had gluten free fish, she was absolutely delighted as eating out can be challenging for her. Thank you so much, it was a lovely experience with lovely food.

What a complete change to the chip shop a warm comfort while you wait for your take away meal . All condiments on a table so you can help yourself . I am heavy on the salt and vinegar no one puts enough on . The chip shop so clean well deserved five stars for hygiene . I had cod bites and chips all cooked fresh batter light chips piping hot . I had chocolate orange cheesecake to go for my afters . Devine ending for my supper . Good deals on every day for sit down and a varied and full menu will be back again . We have used this takeaway regularly, but sorry to say, this was the worst meal we have ever had from here. Both dishes were over cooked, the Haddock was like rubber and the Chicken was inedible. It all went in the bin. The usual standard was completely lost. Have you changed your chef???? So disappointed, £29 wasted 😞

A good restaurant for a fish and chip meal where you can sit down and have it plated. The food is nicely cooked and well presented. The staff are attentive and helpful. My only negative thought was that I feel that the wine available could be a better quality.

Another great visit to Welcome Stranger. We were a group of friends, and have been there before and the staff have always been friendly. This time out server Arti, excelled. They joined in the banter , came back a couple of times to see if everything was okay, and really made us feel welcome, especially as we can get a bit raucous! They couldn't have done anything more to improve the experience. Myself and some other friends are going back next week. The food never fails to please and is excellent value.

Disappointed with poor service today which resulted in spending less time( and money!) than we would have done. I am making the comparison with service we had been used to with the previous owners. The time we waited for our initial order to be taken was just this side of acceptable but could have been quicker given the number of customers present at that time. Food and drink arrived promptly but the drink order was incorrect. We were told “ I thought you said 2 teas”.Can I suggest that waiting staff read back the order to the customer to ensure mistakes are not made. Our plates were removed very quickly, (whilst I was still chewing my last mouthful) and we were asked if we wanted dessert and left a menu. We decided what we wanted then waited, and waited and waited! The staff did not seem overly busy but did not cast a glance in our direction. We were waiting long enough for me to drink two cups of tea. Eventually I managed to catch the eye of staff and asked to pay as by then we had lost our appetite for pudding.When expressing our view that there is little point in leaving a menu and not returning to take an order, the response was that he was sorry but we should have “ waved him over as he is not a mind reader”!! Firstly how rude and secondly it’s your job to provide a decent effective service without customers having to chase you! We are local and will probably return again but if we receive similar service again will go elsewhere thereafter. Very disappointing as we used to enjoy our visits previously.

Lovely lady behind the counter served us - couldn't have been nicer. However we were tricked as we saw some bloke putting salt and vinegar on his fish in front of us which seemed a decent size. When we got home, we found we had paid for half a fish for £7.50 plus some scrat end of crunchy small chips for £4.50 . . . Not worth twelve quid for that plate . . .

We come quite often, and only once did we have an issue with our takeaway. Emailed the restaurant and our issue was dealt with quickly, efficiently and very humbly. The chips are the best they have ever been! Crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The new decor is amazing and feels very homely. You can put your own salt and proper chip shop vinegar on at the takeaway, which ensures you get the right amount for yourself. Very lucky to have this wonderful gem of a chippy on our doorstep. Nice work 😍

Takeaway Meal. Not a great meal, the strangest batter I've ever had on fish and chips, it had a strange texture and did not totally enclose the fish portions, allowing the fish to dry out at the edges. The haddock skin had not been removed but was not crisp due to the "batter". I realise these are new owners but they could not compete with the previous management. Will not be returning.

The special is £12 but it’s lovely an still a big plate full. The staff are lovely very friendly an helpfull deffo coming again. Well worth giving this place a go.

Still the best fish and chips around. I visit weekly with my mother in law and although the new owners have introduced a few new changes the quality has been maintained. I noticed in a previous review that the toilets weren't very pleasant, I would suggest this was a one off and unfortunate event. I always visit the toilets and never had a problem. One of the biggest change has been staff but they are all very welcoming and attentive to your needs.

We decided to go out & have a sit down fish & chip meal rather than a takeaway. To start the waitress eliminated to tell us about the specials board that was out of view. When we discovered it, it was too late to change the order. My friends meal came out first & the chips were cold & has to be sent back. The burger wasn’t very nice at all. Two of us said the same thing. The price was not reflective of the quality of the food. Paying that much I expected far more. It would have been better to go across the road to the pub & get decent food for the same price.

My husband and I are on holiday and decided to come here for tea based on the reviews. I cannot stress how lovely this restaurant is everything was done properly at the door hand sanitizer and details taken for track and trace. The staff all wore masks and visors and were so friendly they couldn't have treated us better if we were royalty. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was fresh and very tasty . If you come to Cornwall and don't visit this amazing restaurant then you are seriously missing out. As I said to the waitress at the time there are many more expensive restaurants that could learn from this one .

Whilst waiting ages for our food, noticed a number of awards on the wall. It couldn't be for welcoming, service or even organisation because all were lacking. During the early relaxation of covid lockdown the takeaway from here was very very well organised with phone ahead with order and timed slots to driving up at agreed time and member of staff bringing order to car. Unfortunately now that the routine for takeaway has been relaxed even further the level of service has slipped considerably.eg I phoned during morning with order to collect at 6 45 unable to pay at time of order but was told I had to go into shop on arrival to pay then go out again to my car and wait for a member of staff to bring order to me..Arrived on time entered and paid then returned to car and waited.after approx 10 mins a member of staff came and said I had been charged wrongly. So had to go back in shop to sort out then had to wait further 10 mins apps for order to be brought to car. Finally got order about 20 to 25 mins later than agreed earlier. Not at all impressed and I feel a great fall off of a previously brilliant service.

This is a small fish and chip café that also does a takeaway service. There is plenty of parking at the back and in the current climate, reservations are recommended. The Cafe is strongly compliant with Covid 19 guidelines.The staff were warm and friendly and the café was very efficiently run. There is a broad menu going far beyond traditional fish and chips and whilst these are not the cheapest you might find the quality was quite satisfactory. You may not choose to spend vast amounts of time here but for a quick and satisfying meal it is ideal.

I placed an order only to find out that I was given the wrong order. I returned the wrong order and was met with a simple, here is the rest of our order. I pointed out that this was not the case, as the items I had, were not in my order and they tried to fob me off when I disagreed with them they said don't shout at us. i was not shouting, just merely having to repeat myself again and again. they had no idea how to manage with customer service complaint and chose the approach to blame me. to be fair, the food was not worth all the hassle as the chips were quite greasy and limp. I would physically check your orderbefore you leave the site.

We went for a takeaway bite, but they have seating inside too. Well set up for social distancing, but the parking is tight round the back so don’t leave the vehicle as not all the visitors are confident turning in tight spaces.

Order your food in advance and collect it from the car park :) Great way to serve takeaway food in current situations. Would order a couple of days before you want to visit as collection slots are snapped up. Delicious every time :)

The chips were not too bad, however the fish was too greasy, I know is deep fried, but the fish may have stand lie down, maybe if the fish was stand on its side maybe the grease runs down, so not a very good experience of the famous Fish & Chips...

what a great chippy this place is,I. From Hertfordshire and here for my holiday in nearby Newquay, I came here with my family of 5 and the chip's fish and sausages in batter were out of this world, top class and very awhere of the COVID-19 as I placed order then the young lad brought it out to my car ,very polite and helpful,highly recommended

Really impressed to find this local fish and chip restaurant taking such care amidst the Covid-19 scare. Hand sanitizers placed at all entrances and staff meticulous in cleaning down tables and other hard surfaces.Evening fixed price menu is very good value for money with a choice of 3 mains, side orders, plain or wholemeal bread and butter plus a pot of tea or soft drink for £11.50 per person. Nice cod and chips with garden peas which were all freshly prepared. Would definitely recommend trying it for a very tasty and filling meal.

We visited this restaurant for my mums birthday with the family. Can't rate them any higher. The staff were lovely and very attentive. The food was great, the fish had nice crispy batter and homemade chips. All 11 of us enjoyed our evening and will definately be visiting again very soon. Mum says Thankyou again for the cupcake xx

We have been many times and the chips are hit and miss. I had the burger the other day and i must say it was really yummy and there battered sausage and curry sauce are really good. It not the best and not the worst.

They claim to have vegetarian options. This is not true. Beware it is all cooked in beef dripping. Very disappointed and upset that there was nothing whatsoever available for vegetarians or piscatarians. Will certainly never come here again

Stopped in here recently when travelling by at lunchtime and, having not crossed the threshold for a couple of years, thought I'd see how it was. As the title suggests, I left the restaurant three quarters of an hour later, satisfied but not ecstatic.Lovely warm welcome, not too busy, and having perused the menu I opted for a lunchtime special of cod, chips and peas with bread and butter and a pot of tea. I added in a couple of extras (always a big appetite!!) and would have had some cod roe had it been on the menu. Anyway, all came to about £11, I seem to recall.Not bad, these days, price-wise, probably....but let's see what the food's like. The restaurant was clean and tidy and the staff were efficient and pleasant. My tea arrived within a few minutes...great....and was a good tasty cuppa. The food arrived fairly quickly, too, neatly presented with the mushy peas and some curry sauce in little ramekins on the side of the plate.First thoughts were...well, it was okay. Fish (batter) looked crisp and light, well cooked....likewise the chips. I was aware I was mentally comparing with other fish and chip shops/restaurants I'd visited in mid-Cornwall over recent years and was thinking....'This isn't the most generous portions I've received.' It was alright, not miserly, just not, well.....I do have a good appetite, I acknowledge!I always try to be honest and fair, of course, and I'm delighted to report, the fish was cooked to perfection, the batter light and tasty, the chips had that wonderful slight crunch and inner softness that comes from double-frying or something like that. All was delicious. So why am I stingy with my three stars then!?Well, I just think I would have felt slightly more welcomed as a stranger (!) had there been a slightly bigger portion of cod,,,chips...peas...curry on the plate. I'm sure they would still have made a decent profit and I would have left even happier and even more likely to return. Just as I was about to 'settle up' I heard a take-away customer ordering cod roe and checked with the waitress that it was available after all, but it hadn't been on the menu (going to be rectified, evidently).....and mentioned I would have loved to have had that as well. I might then have added another star. Who knows!?So, not the worst, but not the best as some have testified on their reviews. This is, of course, merely my own humble opinion but I've been to several other places in the past year where the quality was certainly as good and quantity better, even when a bit more had been charged.I will be back one day, doubtless...gotta try their cod roe and see if the portion sizes have gone up!!

I hate doing these reviews as local to the village but....Truly awful takeaway food experience.Service was great as always but the food in my experience always leaves a lot to be desired.I know people say it’s the best chip shop in the area and sometimes Cornwall but alas that’s never been my experience.Gluten free was ordered Undercooked Batter on Cod that was inedible and barely cooked chips.This all cost a extortionate 7.20 for large gluten free cod and chips that ended up in the bin.I know people will say why didn’t you take if back but on this occasion I was in a rush and was off out and the meal was for my wife.We’ve given this place so many chances as we are local and every time we end up regretting it Last time!End of

We were a party 8 and we went out for an evening meal here. The service was very good but the portions were very small and considering its a fish restaurant in a fish and chip shop the prices were quite high.

Visited on several occasions and this place never disappoints. Large portion sizes of fantastic tasting food, whats not to like.

Apart from the Lanivet Inn, this is the only other place in walking distance to eat. It is a standard Fish and Chip Restaurant with a small difference. It does other dishes and is licenced. My husband's fish and chips were excellent. My omellete was cold and overcooked, chips o.k. Great place to take the kitds and have a beer/wine for the adults.

We were drawn here a few years ago whilst on holiday in Bodmin. The service and quality was great and it was a joy to be able to enjoy lovely gluten free battered fish and chips. So when staying with friends near Lerryn, on the suggestion of fish and chips our friends said that we would got to Stranger Fish and Chips as they were the only GF one nearby.

Popped in here for tea, nice friendly atmosphere, good menu, everything cooked fresh to order, very reasonably priced, they have a sit in restaurant and takeaway.

Just drove past this place by chance today got to say it was the tastiest fish and chips I have had in ages fish was soft and flakes away batter was crisp as not greasy chips where also very tasty well done 10/10

Most fish and chip shops have some sort of claim to fame or award mentioning that they have been nominated for Best Fish and Chips of the year, or the area etc etc. However, this place doesn't, and I'm not sure why because they are utterly delicious. Not much more that I can say apart from if your ordering a take away, then ring in advance as you'll have to wait as everything is very fresh.

I've had almost all of the fish and chips in the local area and this is undoubtedly the best. The value for money is unexplainable.

Visited after reading positive reviews, but won't be back. To be fair the food was okay (if you overlooked the aged slice of lemon garnish), but the service was terrible. On arrival, we were greeted very abruptly. When the food was served it was just dumped on the table, with no interest in who's meal was whose, and when the bill came it had half of another tables order added to it!

Opted for a takeaway meal whilst in the area (dog in tow so couldn't sit in). Pie and chips and sausage and chips, with gravy and curry sauce. Lovely chicken pie.

Stayed at the nearby St Benets Abbey but had a good Plaice and chips here in the evening. Lots of happy customers in and attentive staff.

Lots of choices available, especially for gluten free. Staff are knowledgeable about their products and very helpful. Food is slightly more expensive than what we’re used to paying for fish & chips but it is nice so didn’t mind paying the little bit extra. The conservatory part was a little noisy so we were almost shouting across the table to each other but this wouldn’t put me off coming back in the future. We genuinely had a decent time & enjoyed the food.
