If you need to visit St Austell then you could do worse than stay here. There is a small free secured carpark to the rear. The hotel is old so no lifts, multiple floors not always on the same level, stairways are narrow as well. Reception is not 24 / 7, so if arriving late or leaving early you need to make arrangements. The bar and restaurant is well served. The breakfast was nice, the hotel allows walkins for lunch and dinner and it is popular, given the limited options locally it is not surprising. The room was adequate but small, good size bathroom, with shower over the bath. Would I stay there again yes.

Used the pub many times over the years but today was the worst experience I have ever had in any public house. Went in with a friend of mine the bar tender pulled one pint and I said no I want two pints, I went up a second time to be served, two young boys not long out of school. I was stood waiting at the bar with no response from the two young boys. One was speaking to a person and the other one stacked glasses with no intention of serving me. You need to give the staff a kick up the behind or better still replace them Michael.

The incredible hospitality and warm welcoming made my first trip to Cornwall so much more memorable. The food was outstanding and there were plenty of options. Although the rooms were small, it added to the overall vibe of the place and were very clean and comfortable. Shout out to Andrew for your impeccable service and Jack for making dinner a barrel of laughs.

We enjoyed an excellent Sunday roast here with family, it was recommended by relations who had eaten here before, but was our first visit. The place had a nice relaxed atmosphere, perhaps a little old school. The staff were friendly and helpful. We all chose the small roast with desert, between us we chose three different meats and all enjoyed the meal, the portions were a good size and tasty. There was gluten free gravy for me. There was a decent selection of desserts too.

We didn’t stay at the hotel so couldn’t comment on the accommodation. We just went in for a meal which was the best meal we’ve had in ages! On the plus side the room was large. However, what we didn't expect was a Karaoke directly below our room. No mention of it on the website when we booked. We had booked for two nights but left after the first night. The woman at reception (I think was one of the owners) didn't care and refused to give a night's refund. This place could give Fawlty Towers a run for the money. I, in all honesty, could not recommend this place as a hotel.

Having read the menu online, booked a table looking forward to a dish of mussels which were unavailable on that evening so had to settle for scampi and chips. Big portions but scampi all uniform shape and size. Being a coastal town, I was expecting something better than standard pub seafood. Cheese board was good and service friendly although seemed a bit rushed as the time approached the 9pm end of shift for our server.

We decided to have our Boxing day meal at this restaurant after having a fantastic Sunday lunch a few weeks back. We have eaten here on a few occasions and have been more than satisfied. We entered the dining area and the table was laid out with Xmas in mind, little touches like a little gift, a red hat each and even a cracker. I thought OK this is going to be good. However how disappointed we where. The starters where fine and the dessert also. But the main course was just not up to it. Over cooked veg to the point some where burnt. more gravy on the plate you could have a swim. A most unappetising meal. Considering it was supposed to be special , didn't come up to the mark on this occasion. Really don't know what more to say except we went home feeling let down

Given how close we were to the sea and some brilliant food we’d had earlier on our trip, the food here was very disappointing. It was not home made and the mussels smelled off. Sadly it’s the type of food that gives British food a bad name. And it was expensive! It’s a lovely looking hotel and restaurant but could do with a makeover starting in the kitchen.

Booked for evening meal. First impressions were an impressive building. Parking is in a small car park behind the hotel took two attempts to find the right road to access it. Like most hotels of this era has had money spent on it but need more to bring completely up to modern day expectations. The bar are toilets one are needing modernisation. Service was very good and efficient throughout. I don’t normally make comments on the staff but one in a nice three pice suit the other in a shirt with low waisted (back) trousers not a good look. Food we only had mains which both looked good. The scampi was very well cooked and tasty. Chips looked well cooked but tasted fine with peas. The place looked good but overcooked and watery but tasted OK no texture to it, the vegetables except the cauliflower were overcooked too with a carrot top in dish. New potatoes were nice. The beer and pink gin were very good.

A friend and I were in St Austell one evening so decided to pop into the White Hart for a light snack. I ordered the Broccoli & Stilton soup which, whilst hot and plenty of it, was desperately lacking in Stilton! I couldn't taste any - very disappointing. My friend order the Baked Brie - what we ended up with was three slices of microwaved Brie. We had a word with the waitress (who was lovely). She spoke to the chef who sent her back to inform us the Brie was definitely baked. My friend has been a cook for over thirty years, in the UK and abroad, and knows what she is talking about. Very disappointed with the food but the waitresses and the ambience were fine.

I went to this establishment on Wednesday 25th January 2023 intending to stop and have a coffee with intention of looking for my family to stay here. However I needed to use the restroom first which I was approached by a lady who said “Can I help you” which I then replied and said yes I need the toilet. To her reply “you could have asked” which bearing in mind this is a public house so no need. I then said there is no need to ask to go to the toilet surely? She said you need to ask I then said there was no signs stating that you need permission to go to the toilet in a public house. Having the very rude approach I decided to then leave which on my way out the lady began to tell me no to return when all I did was use the toilet with intention of staying for a coffee and also to book my family into the rooms above. Never in my life have I been to a public house approached by any member of staff telling me I need permission to use the toilet.

We visited with friends on a Friday afternoon for drinks only. We were the only 4 in the bar. We ordered our first drinks and sat in very comfortable seats beside a roaring fire which was lovely. However, sadly, we were unable to order a second drink. After standing/hovering around the bar for 20+ minutes we had to give up and go elsewhere. There seemed to be one member of staff working and they also had to deal with the phone/bookings hence, at no fault of their own, could not also serve us at the bar.

After a rubbish 2020 we thought we would treat ourselves to eat out for Christmas Day. It was £65 for four courses and we had to choose our dishes in advance. My husband’s starter was fine - prawn cocktail. Mine was supposed to be baked brie but all I got was a tiny cube of brie sitting in a dish of rather lumpy cheese sauce. Then came the sorbet. A tub of Roskilly’s sorbet which on closer inspection had a sell by date of June 2020 - i.e. it was 6 months out of date. I pointed this out to the waiter and he apologised. But that was it.For the main I had ordered the vegetarian alternative. I was given a plate of tomato-ey sauce and a scoop of rice. I was sure I hadn’t ordered this but I was told that it was the vegetarian dish. So I ate it. It was a bit ordinary - the sort of thing I would cook for myself for a regular weekday tea. My husband had ordered turkey with all the trimmings, which is what he got. But it was a huge trough of food. He has a very big appetite but was hardly able to scrape the surface of this ridiculously large portion. It was just crude. The desserts were good, happily. For our £65 though we didn’t get a cup of coffee and had to pay extra for one. When leaving to settle up in reception I discovered that I had in fact ordered a chestnut pie for my main. I pointed this out to the member of staff in reception and also that the sorbet we had been served was 6 months out of date and she said sorry. And that was it.It was a massively disappointing Christmas Day dinner that should have been a bit of a special occasion. I have since emailed the White Hart to complain, and to give them the opportunity to explain / make amends before I posted a review or told local friends and family about it, but my email has been ignored. Very very poor, disappointing, overpriced. Definitely won’t be going there again.

Visited the White Hart Hotel for Sunday Roast with my Mum. They have a set menu with choice of meats (you can only pick one meat on the small and regular size dinners) and the price included a sweet. I chose regular thinking this would be fine. The staff were very helpful both at the bar and the serving staff. When the dinner arrived it came on quite a large plate and I realised it was going to be too much for me to eat. Sadly the veg consisted of anything beginning with C (cabbage, carrots and cauliflower) I can’t eat any of them and was disappointed that during the Xmas season there were no sprouts or beans which would have been better. I couldn’t have any of the sweets on the menu as I am dairy and gluten free and there was no choice on the menu to cover this which is short sighted in today’s world of allergy’s and dietary needs. They did however produce berry and peach flavoured sorbet which was very nice. There was a singer in the bar area singing Christmas songs for charity. Whilst this is a nice idea I found it too noisy when I wanted a sedate lunch with my Mum and he announced he’s there the next two Sundays. Hope he turns the volume down a bit. Lovely decor and the meat and potatoes were lovely and plenty. I would go again after Christmas when no singer and have the small dinner.

The young bar man was really friendly and welcomed us as were the other staff, he found us a table which was not reserved. Service was good, food was lovely and quite large portions. Only one criticism, the female manager reprimanded a member of staff in front of customers, which is really not the thing to do. He had cleared dirty plates and wiped a table down but all he had done was not laid the table quick enough for her liking. Would definitely go back, hopefully the manager would have had some lessons on how to speak to her staff.

My wife and I stayed at this very pleasant hotel for a short break to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. The hotel was chosen as central to our rail travel plans, (only 4 mins form bus and railway station) and recommended to us. From the moment we walked in the staff could not do enough for us and ensured our stay was enjoyable and memorable. Our room was clean and functional - even had a large portable fan to keep us cool which was needed in the very hot weather this year. The food menu was varied, well cooked and lovingly presented. The staff on our anniversary day decorated a table presenting us with a bouget and bottle of wine when we had our meal - a gesture we really appreciated. This listed hotel is perfectly situated next to a church which enhances the olde worlde feel with chimes on the hour until 11 pm. We would happily return and plan to as we have places we would like to visit.

Recommend the Steak & Ale pie. Beautiful dish served with a good variety of Spring veg and mash.

Ate in restaurant as staying in hotel. Food was good home cooked fare which I had no complaints about and was reasonably priced. Eastern European waiter was excellent

The Groupon offer my daughter bought for my birthday was so generous that we weren't really sure what to expect. However we needn't have worried, the White Hart was perfect in every way. Typically olde worlde - creaky floorboards, nooks and crannies and very cosy. Popular with locals too which always says a lot. Our brightly decorated room had an enormous bathroom, very comfy bed and lots of free goodies. The offer included breakfasts and one 2-course meal with water and wine, and although the menu for Groupon-ers was limited there was still plenty of choice. All the food was delicious, so much so that we opted to eat there the following evening too. The maitre'd, Richard, was wonderful - very attentive and had a great sense of humour. In fact all the staff were lovely and nothing too much trouble. Can thoroughly recommend both sleeping and eating here.

went for a family lunch today for brothers birthday, found the place warming, clean, friendly, food was lush i had the steak and ale pie, gorgeous, and a friendly price, you have two options, large meal or a smaller size, the smaller is the same as dinner at home, so only go bigger if you are a big eater lol, they have a customer friendly drinks menu covering almost everything you can think of, there was a lovely fire going on this miserable day. the staff were very good. polite, helpful, service was excellent, not stayed the night, but if downstairs is anything to go by i imagine very comfortable. will definitely be going again

Early evening dinner in the pub so it was quiet. Menu looked good with plenty to choose from. I picked beef as ale pie and vegetables.

Ran in out of the pouring rain and was pleasantly surprised. Great interior decoration and lovely furnishings. Ordered ham ,egg and chips. Arrived really quickly. Liked the young bar man Josh . He was chatty and kind , spotting a kid struggling with ice cream in a tub and getting him a bowl couldn't say the same for female front of house , long dyed hair in her 30s. Constantly eating when leaving the kitchen, moaning and looking like she was eating a lemon !! Worth a visit and hotel looked nice too

The food was excellent and service very efficient but there was very little atmosphere. We booked here for old time’s sake but the attitude towards customers is very poor: 1. We were obliged to give our credit card details so a £15 ‘no show’ charge could be applied, despite re-confirming via the app that we would be coming. 2. We were told before we’d even arrived that we would need to vacate our table 1h40m after our 7pm booked time. 3. At the end of our evening, a 10% service charge was added to our bill without any mention or thank you. We were wondering from the very start do you really want our custom or not? Despite it being a busy Saturday night in St Ives, there were only 2-4 tables occupied in a large restaurant the whole time we were there. It’s a shame because the food and setting of the restaurant are superb. I think ‘no bookings’ is more of a problem than ‘no shows’ so maybe you need to review your policies to be more in line with your competitors and a lot more welcoming to your customers.

Great trad pub - with pool, board games, very friendly service, and inexpensive but palatable pub grub food. Odd to have the best seats permanently reserved for staff, though.
