Very bad service, a member of staff was extremely rude. Whilst we were drinking our tea and coffee she told us she was closing the tea room. One minute later at 4pm she started collecting our cups and we hadn't quite finished. Did not enjoy our visit for the first time to this tea room and will strongly not recommend this tea room to family and friends. There were other customers in the tea room at the time and they received the same treatment. Appalling manners.

Came here for brunch with a friend and checked the contents of a drink at the till, specifically asking for coconut milk. A server brought my drink over stating ‘heres the coconut one’ and I got a few gulps in thinking it tasted off but assuming it was the type of matcha, before realising in horror that it was cows milk. Having been vegan for over 10 years, this is the first time this has ever happened to me. I was physically sick for a few hours after and genuinely upset; had this been an allergy, it could have been a serious incident. The manger in was really apologetic and refunded my order but would never trust it here again unfortunately.

Didn’t even get to sample what they might have on offer. Made a booking for two people which was accepted, rang back to add another, said they couldn’t do it at all. Who takes bookings then hours later says they can’t - what’s the point of a booking system. Massive let down for a special occasion. Stuff your tea and cakes

I’ve always been a fan of this tea house as the staff are always friendly and cheerful, the tea selection is impressive, the food is good, and the bought-in gluten-free cakes are delicious (the strawberry and pistachio one is particularly scrumptious). That said, after a Wednesday shopping spree (1/2/23), I raced over to Waterloo Tea Room for a refreshing cuppa and a slice of cake. I arrived at exactly 3:04pm and was (politely) informed that the café closed at three - despite it said “OPEN” on the open door and seated were around twenty customers. I tried to persuade the young lady to serve me - I even promised to leave before 4pm, with the OTHER customers and even offered her a £5 tip (bribe)! She insisted she could not due to the owner stipulating a strict 3pm closure - how ridiculous is that? Especially given the fact this coffee shop is struggling financially and has already been forced to close on a Monday AND Tuesday. If I was the desperate owner I’d be THROWING people into my café at 3:04pm who want to spend £10 on tea and cake. (Once, last year, I counted AT LEAST twenty people refused food mid-afternoon because “the kitchen is now closed”. Iif they had all spent at least £10 each then that is £200+ of vital revenue lost.) I just don’t get it. The assistant even agreed that this branch of Waterloo Tea Rooms is sadly “disappearing” - a sort of defeat at Waterloo. So how come BARKER Tea House (High Street Arcade) and others are thriving? I think it may be something to do with being… (how shall I put this)… err, open. But to be fair to Waterloo, the arcades nearer the castle do see a lot more tourists and visitors. What would I do if I were the owner of WTR and even being open wasn’t enough to save it? Bearing in mind the saying in business that if you’re doing exactly the same thing in five years time you’ll be OUT of business, I’d reinvent myself as a Covent Garden-style trendy-but-affordable high quality salad bar (“Wyndham Salad Bar”). I’d continue the smoothies but offer just a reasonable selection of beverages. The most popular items and cakes in their current selection could still be sold according to demand. My fantasy “Wyndham Salad Bar” would be Cardiff’s “King” of vegetarian healthy eating: interesting brown rice salads; spicy potato “aloo” salads; delicious veg-rich, beans and chickpea salads; yoghurt dressings and various fresh sauces; nuts and seeds. I would pinch ideas from the few healthy-eating places in the city, research London’s top salad bars and then copy/improve on their big sellers. Also, because the Wyndham arcade is open at night (Bill’s and Ask Italian use it) I would also think about hosting the odd music/poetry evening as well as promoting it as a venue for different groups to meet, as they do successfully at Chapter Arts Centre. Of course, this will never happen. And it’s very sad that a venue which specialises in teas is now specialising in closing.

The coffee was ok, a shade bitter but the Welsh seem to like it that way. Nice pattern with the coffee art but lost definition quickly due to over foaming. Was not silky enough for flat white. Nice local coffee shop with friendly staff. Wish I’d tried the cakes.

We’ve come here many times, we like the coffee, tea and cakes. It’s a very different place, with nice character, great service and tasty food. On this occasion, we ordered 2 coffees, a cake and two breakfast eggs benedict, one with smoked salmon. When they arrived, I couldn’t believe the amount of salmon they’d charged us £4 for!! The portions used to be bigger previously but it did make us wonder if they’re purposefully reducing size but charging same prices? It’s a bit overpriced anyway, to serve a slice of sourdough with spinach, sauce and two eggs for around £8, I mean the ingredients themselves cost very little and the profit margin on this dish is huge. But to charge £4 extra for literally two tiny pieces of smoked salmon, when I can walk in any supermarket and get the full packet for the same amount, is a bit of a rip off. It would be sad to see this happen again in future, we’re just going to hope it was a one off.

Popped in yesterday for a light lunch. Very good welcome and nicely spaced tables. Welsh rarebit was sublime - tasty, generous, light and fluffy - accompanied by a small but well dressed salad and a plum chutney which was perfectly chosen to cut across the savoury and almost foamy rarebit topping. Looking forward to returning to explore more of the (pleasingly short) menu.

We walked past this tea room Sunday evening 15th May when it had just closed, interested by the decor and decided we come back in the morning next day. Greeted by lovely attentive staff, ordered the chai toast with berries and creme fraiche, and the poached eggs on sourdough. Oh my. Delicious!!! Big portions and the eggs cooked to perfection. Hollandaise sauce creamy and had a good taste, sourdough slice cut thick and toasted lightly. Teapot comes with a timer which was fun. It's relaxing to sit there, comfortable chairs and nice colour scheme, like a sage spring green and some purple additions, not your typical all-white or industrial style café. Returning to try one of their cakes, hopefully soon.

Waterloo Tea is situated between Mill Lane and St Mary Street and is the poorer cousin of the other Cardiff arcades, such as the illustrious Morgan Arcade. But don’t let that put you off from visiting Waterloo Tea which takes its huge selection of good quality teas very seriously. They also have a menu which is healthy and boasts some gluten-free options, such as their homemade baked beans and a couple of delicious locally-made GF cakes etc. Because it’s primarily a specialist tea house, I’m not that bothered by the occasional reviewer criticising their coffee. That said, although this establishment has an excellent hygiene rating from the council, I would still like to see the staff wearing smart, pinafore-style aprons. This would lessen the chances somewhat of human/pet hairs being transferred from the the staff’s own clothes onto the food. Full length modern aprons also look cleaner and more professional. All in all, a nice change from the ubiquitous coffee shop chains in one of Cardiff’s many interesting arcades.

I visited your Wellfield Road branch for breakfast. One waiter on and just one table of two with 2 children in the cafe. I was told they wld be with me soon when I approached the counter, 10 minutes later!! After he’d made two coffees I was served and that was by a colleague who had just arrived. The slowness was painful god help them if they are busy. I ordered poached eggs with home made baked beans on sourdough toast and a large Americano. I found a seat and immediately thought this is a mistake. The two children had a type of toy made of tin and kept dropping it on the floor making a loud bang. They were incapable of sitting down and jumped around the restaurant. Why can’t people control their kids these days. I had 3 and managed it. My food came very quickly which was good, it was very nice but no coffee materialised. Two other diners entered ordered coffee and were served, obviously friends of the waiter, as he was gushing over them. Still no coffee despite trying to catch their eye. I finished my breakfast and then informed them of my missing coffee, they were surprised and apologetic but it was too late and I asked for a refund. Won’t be going back at £3 a coffee I expect better service than this and staff on the ball. Look around the restaurant and remember your orders. I went next door to coffee#1 and my coffee and service was excellent, that is where I will be returning.

When the tea pots come to your table, they are accompanied with the proper timers, a touch that I appreciated. If you prefer cold tea, they do two cold brews each day.

Really enjoyed our tea and coffee. The reason for 3 stars is because so many of the comfy chairs were soooo very grubby and really badly stained. If you are dressed up you don't want to sit on dirty chairs. It was not what you expect from this standard of tea/coffee shop. So easy to put a few flat cushions with washable covers? We opted to sit at the table. Tables are squeezed together and still the waitress squeezed in between to walk past us several times knocking the tables each time. Flaming Nora !!! Hubby had expresso coffee and spinach and pistachio cake lovely. I had rose leaf and juniper white tea and a scone with jam and cream. Scone did not arrive until long after hubby finished his cake. I had to ask in the end and was told it had to come from the kitchen upstairs, even though the one I saw was in the cabinet by the service area. When it did come it was lukewarm on the outside and icy cold in the centre. I was too hungry and fed up so I ate it. Wouldn't be in a hurry to go back. So many things that let it down and with a little thought could have been avoided. Staff were nice.

I’m a allergic to dairy and nuts, which is a bit of a nightmare. The front of house and kitchen staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. They arranged a nut-free vegan option for our hen do afternoon tea. Everything was delicious and service was attentive but not overbearing.

what a gem of a find! tucked away in the arcades but definitely worth a look. we went in for a cuppa and left informed on how sheltered our lives had been in terms of tea anyway! an amazing selection of diverse teas suitable for every pallet I should think. helpful and friendly staff who were happy to share their knowledge of the teas and allow us to have a good sniff of them to (the teas not the staff I mean!), comfortable seating and quiet surroundings made for a perfect brew - oh and we even got a little timer to tell us when our teas were ready to drink! the only bad point was the price - at £3 per pot it is definitely a treat - shame as I am keen to try more, I would recommend the tangerine ginger!

I’m currently in the Waterloo tea in Wyndham arcade Cardiff. The upholstered chairs are beyond filthy. The place is freezing although the very nice girl behind the counter put a little heater on. The toast was barely toasted and therefore cold and doughy. Not pleasant at all.

Very busy cafe but the staff chatted to us while they worked. We sat outside and were asked if we wanted the overhead heaters on. Expected butter with the scones but we got jam and cream! Delicious.

I visited Waterloo tea room in Cyncoed, Cardiff this week after I heard it was nice but needed renovation a while ago, to be shocked that months later, the floors are still bare concrete, needing doing. The bar area is nice. Sandwitches were very basic, normal whit bread & cheese for £6 EXPENSIVE, tea £3 ok. But nice location, parking is feasible.

We always visit Waterloo Tea when in Cardiff and it never disappoints. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is always first class whether it be breakfast, lunch or just coffee and their delicious cakes. All is delicious and well presented in the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant. The afternoon tea (which we have had on a number of occasions) is excellent and really good value.

Went here for a work lunch. Food was excellent. Great selection of tea. Only thing letting it down was service was slow and they were not that busy. So would go back and recommend just build in some extra time.

This is THE best place for a slice of cake with a friend, a spontaneous lunch stop, or an absolutely calming cup of tea. I love this place: the decor, the spinach and pistachio cake, the cute teapots, and the super friendly staff who have to wait and listen to me decide what tea I want out of such a great selection. There is just so much quality here, definitely recommend!

We went here for brunch and I thoroughly enjoyed the shakshuka, which was beautifully presented in a cast iron pan and came with lots of sour dough toast. There is an impressive selection of teas and the waiting staff advise you on how long you should brew each type. We were given a special tea timer to do this but to our amusement we realised one side of it was broken, we could have waited a very long time for our tea to brew...

We booked afternoon tea here on the day prior to our visit. When we got there we were told that there was no trace of our booking but we were seated pretty quickly and served in about 20 mins. The lady who looked after us was very pleasant and apologised for their mistake, apparently the guy who we spoke to had not logged our booking on the system. We enjoyed the experience after the bad start.

We went on a Sunday afternoon; typically I go to Barker Tea in one of the other Cardiff arcades but figured my partner (who is afraid of new/different things) would probably prefer it here.

Lord help me, I walked into one of those artisan ‘coffee houses’ on the weekend. You know the sort of place…there are a few on every high-street now, usually on the bourgeois side of town. It’s where you should expect your single origin bean macchiato to come deconstructed. Where it’s £6 for a ‘coffee’, and some assembly is required.

It goes without saying that the tea and coffee served at Waterloo Tea is excellent but the lunch menu is so much better than any high street chain! My spicy pulled chicken, black beans & avocado brioche was absolutely delicious! Also, the prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the ingredients!

A booking for 4 had been made following our visit to take the 'Pobol y Cwm ' set tour. We were greeted on our arrival snd taken to our table. We were given time to peruse the menu and ordered a bottle of delicious house wine. We all gave our choices from the menu and we were waited on and looked after very well. The food was delicious and will definitely return.

I recently visited this café which not only served a variety of breakfast and brunch options but also offered what I can confidently say was the best coffee I had during my time in Cardiff. I opted for a black Americano, but it was clear they took their coffee seriously, with an evident dedication to quality that shone through in every sip. The beans were expertly brewed, resulting in a rich, well-balanced flavour profile that highlighted the nuances of the coffee without being overshadowed by bitterness. It’s refreshing to find a place that genuinely cares about the craft of coffee-making. The atmosphere of the café complemented the experience beautifully. With its vintage chairs, wall-mounted artwork that added an artistic touch, and an overall relaxed décor, the space had a distinct hipster vibe that made it inviting. It’s the perfect setting for enjoying a good coffee, whether you’re looking to engage in conversation with friends or simply unwind with a book. If you’re in Cardiff and searching for a place that values quality coffee in a charming environment, this café is definitely worth a visit.
