We booked a table for afternoon tea in advance which was prepared for us on our arrival. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was presented attractively and with a variety of both savoury and sweet items. A very enjoyable occasion.

We visit regularly on a weekly basis. The food is always lovely and priced accordingly, however if prices did soon increase this would not be value for money. The main issue here is the opening times does not account for the kitchen opening times, when you visit later in the day the kitchen is often closed. This seems to be the normal so it would be good to advertise the kitchen closing time or at a minimum for the staff to advise customers on arrival the kitchen is closed so no food orders rather than informing you after you have spent time to consider and choose from the menu. Mainly my issue here is their are never enough seats available, (unless you go at the end of the day, when the kitchen is closed). We have visited several times at varying times and always a struggle to sit, their is not much order when you have one 4/6 seater table and just 2 people sat at this when you arrive as a family, they have these stool seats you can move around but it’s just not ample enough. It’s not about the place being to busy it’s about the place having a lack of seating. They offer a takeaway option however not all families wish to take away.

As busy as ever, with very friendly staff and quick service. The place was full and the noise level high, which made conversation difficult. However, the food was delicious....Welsh Rarebit with chutney and a lovely side salad was well presented, as was cinnamon toast with bread and jam. Parking was difficult on this occasion.

Always enjoyed Waterloo tea previously but they sadly seem to have an inability to ever order enough produce and therefore never have the full menu available. The last 5 times we’ve been they’ve been out of avocado for avocado on toast.

A wonderful experience for my elderly mother's birthday: lovely ambience, delicious and plentiful food plus kind and attentive staff made this an exceptional occasion. We'd pre-booked a table for afternoon tea, which was ready on our arrival and everything flowed smoothly from then on. It was an innovative menu, with 3 types of sandwich, scone with cream and jam, savoury scone with avocado, savoury tart and 4 individual petit-fours each, as well as a pot of tea. We weren't rushed and the staff were very accommodating. A delightful treat all round.

I was in the Wellfield Rd cafe a few weeks ago and waited 45 mins for a coffee!!! This week my daughter and daughter in law went there for a coffee and a light bite with their babies and 2 pushchairs. There was absolutely no space for the pushchairs other than in the aisle or directly in front of the kitchen where hot drinks and hot food were being brought out. Not very health and safety conscious if the babies are in the pushchairs. Given that it is 2022 and we are supposed to be totally inclusive and the main demographic on a weekday lunchtime is probably Mums and babies the space is sadly lacking. I wonder how wheelchair users would find the facilities!!!

Booked afternoon tea for mum and myself. Service was terrible, the staff we extremely inattentive and rude. After being taken to the worse seat in the property, we had to ask for clean plates to eat cakes off after sandwiches. From the website there was no mention when booking the food to state sandwich fillings we wanted. When salmon sandwiches arrived we asked to have them changed, whereby we were told we should have mentioned which ones we wanted before. This is impossible since there are no options to do this on the website. When it came to pay we were charged £3 extra which does not match the website prices. I will be contact trading standards for false advertising on their website. Do not come here, terrible service and overcharged for it. Rhys

Having never experienced a visit to a Waterloo Teahouse we were looking forward to our cream tea present for my wife's birthday. It was all extremely underwhelming to say the least. Do they deliberately scale down teas when a pre-paid gift voucher is presented I wonder? The portions of sandwiches were small but tasted nice. The scones were bland and missing something (probably butter) and came with cheap, jelly type jam. The slices of cake were moist but also bland. There were no side plates for the cakes, no cutlery to serve the jam and cream (we used the teaspoons from the tea cups). Even the setting inside was bland and lacking atmosphere. I appreciate at this time of social distancing etc. we are not in the norm but even allowing for that, this was a disappointing first (and probably last) experience of a Waterloo Tearoom.

No estaba impresionado

I always enjoy the food here, the coffees are lovely although there is a long wait for them. However today our brunch was served on a chopping board, I don’t think it’s hygienic. Our food was spilling over the edge onto the table. Then the table next to us had the same brunch served on a plate! I’ve never experienced plate envy before! Perhaps the chef had run out of plates and had to think outside the box and improvise a little? I do admit to once eating my meal out of a frying pan. I was moving house and had boxed all my plates away! I don’t think their kitchen is moving house though! Anyway beautiful food as always and I look forward to my next visit. I just hope to have my food on a conventional, boring and practical plate. Audios!

There are many good things about the place, tea and coffee are great, as are the cakes and their brunch options. But some of the staff are not particularly friendly or polite, often not really listening when you order (most of the time i repeat everything because one of the guys there doesn't really pay attention). What has happened the last couple of times though, is the reason why I won't be returning. I regularly order the same breakfast dish, and I have been paying more than what is on the menu, and I pointed it out today and suggested they should update the menus if the prices have changed, and I got a shrug and a 'I will have a look'. No effort to check what the problem was, or to show customer care. Not all staff are like that, admittedly, but it's enough to make me drive to the Cyncoed branch instead.

Have been a regular patron of this place but never again. Firstly egg timers were dropped sending milk and hot water everywhere. Next handles on the strainer not there so impossible to remove the tea leaves. Went to the counter to be told that they have removed them as it affects flavour despite my wife having a handle on hers. The explanation was you were supposed to use the back of the spoon and then lift the strainer (very hot btw) with your fingers!!!!! Then informed I should have been told that when the tea was brought. Extremely poor leaving with annoyance as this used to be a fantastic place to have a meal in a relaxing atmosphere.

If you are looking for an unusual blend of tea, this cafe can provide it at a price. If you merely want refreshment, forget it unless you are determined to eat and drink food that is not of good quality but is at least different from mainstream cafes. If your tastes are mundane, this is not your place. For instance, toast and marmalade will consist of artisan toast with crusts that defy the strongest teeth. The fairly soft centre will taste of very little anyway. They sell a range of unusual home made cake, some of which is OK. A place for those for whom traditional food is a bore, not for the hungry.

The window seats are lovely for watching world go by but the tables towards back are a better height to eat from. I had sweet potatoe on sour dough for lunch. It was well presented, seasoned and garnished. For the price I think topping could have been way fuller, felt like a starter rather than lunch/brunch size. Cakes here are always exquisite and unusual combinations.

I'd booked afternoon tea here with my mother who is coeliac. We'd been planning to have a walk round the nearby park but it was a very rainy afternoon and we arrived over an hour early for our booking. The staff could not have been more accommodating and seated us immediately.

I sample the teas and bask in the glory of Roath's Victorian surroundings. Superb all round - staff know their teas - I'd recommend the Oolongs - especially the Ruby. But the food is good too - especially the Welsh Rarebit and the cakes. So much better than the phoney atmosphere in chain coffee shops, with bearded cycle couriers exuding angst and Remainer disdain.

I've been to this place several times. I thought I'd go for a coffee and cake treat. As the name suggests this place specialises in tea, which they excel at. I had a cappuccino - the cup was pretty small and it wasn't really hot. Just think the cup needed a blast of warming before serving as wasn't big enough a serving to stay warm in cup but coffee was good! I was happy with it. I had chocolate and Avocado cake which was super nice! I'm happy to go again but would like more coffee in a cup please!

Currently sitting outside Waterloo Gardens Teahouse sipping 'Iron goddess of Mercy' in the fading afternoon sunshine. This is our first visit to Waterloo Gardens and won't be our last. The atmosphere is relaxed and convivial, the staff are polite and attentive. Not being a connoisseur of tea I was amazed by the huge selection available and the young man who served us was very patient and informative. Thank you for a very enjoyable visit.

I really enjoyed stopping in here whilst on a day trip to Cardiff. I had a pot of white tea and my partner had a green tea, i was very impressed with the shear scale of options, I have never seen so many! The chairs were very comfortable and it felt like a very peaceful place to rest.

Huge assortment of teas to choose from, original menu with sandwiches, salads and cakes with gluten free options available. We had the pulled lamb sandwich, mushroom banh mi sandwich and lemon polenta cake. All very tasty with good portion sizes, and good value for money. Will be back.

This small tea rooms is as popular for its coffee as for its teas. The choice of teas is extensive and the staff are well informed. There are some excellent and unusual varieties to sample. Afternoon tea is very popular with a good selection of sandwiches and cakes. The coffee is superb. Unlike any other coffee in the area. Rich, flavoursome with no hint of bitterness. The owner tells me the secret is largely in the skill of the baristas although as a small outlet (just three venues) the beans are bought in relatively small quantities and never hangs around for long periods. It is delicious. Visit any of the three outlets and the quality will be consistent. Not somewhere to go if you're in a hurry....making the perfect cup of coffee can't be hurried!

I went to Waterloo Gardens Teahouse in Cardiff for a meeting with colleagues. I was served orange and lemon roobus with finesse. A timer to accompany the little ritual made my tea taste exactly right. Amazing cakes were on show but I didn't have time for them, maybe another time. A lovely relaxed atmosphere of calm in the centre of the city. Of course the one in Roath is just as lovely.

45 min walk from the city center, at a nice park, freshly made high tea with sandwiches and your own choice of cake and tea, with lovely scones. Nice staff, lots of special teas to chose from, special cakes like spinach with pistachio. A real treat. It was possible to enjoy as we arrived and didn't need to make a reservation for the next day.

Me and my husband and at the time 8week old daughter popped in as I really fancied afternoon tea. I asked a young lady at the till if it was possible for afternoon tea. I wasn't sure how it all work at the time. I just thought you could walk into places and order this. The lady did even look at me while telling me " no you have to book, we are busy I have to serve this lady" I was shocked. So me and my husband left feeling not welcomed at all and have never been back. Sorry for bad review. We are always in the park with our little now 5month old girl and look over the yours in horror.

The staff in here were so miserable and unfriendly. The coffee took quarter of an hour to arrive and it was not exactly hot when it did eventually arrive. To make matters worse a woman, i am guessing the owner, cam in and took a wodge of cash out of the till, counts it and walks out. I cannot stand this kind of attitude. Will not be going here again. Very snooty with no substance.

Called in for lunch and chose the soup and sandwich combo. Soup was rather luke warm and quite a small portion, but the cheese sandwich was very tasty. The avocado and chocolate cake was delicious and we drank Waterloo Breakfast Tea which was light and refreshing. The cafe was busy but staff were very helpful and efficient. The afternoon tea menu looked like very good value - and we will definitely call in again.

Love visiting this place. The sandwiches are great as well as the Gluten Free bread, rare to find such good GF bread in a cafe! The cake selection never fails to entertain and please as well. This weekends winner was a spinach & pistachio cake, just lovely!

Sandwich fillings delicious but poor selection of cakes. Expected a selection of small cakes rather than choosing a slice of cake from the display. None of the cakes were particularly well presented although the salted chocolate caramel cake was delicious. Scones were fresh and very big. 3 finger sandwiches each weren't enough for those in party that prefer savoury to sweet things. Presentation of cake stands spoilt by size of cake slices and didn't look particularly appertizing. Service good but at £15 head I felt overcharged. Lot of other coffee shops serve a better afternoon tea for between £10_£12 pp.

We came for a surprise afternoon tea and were totally defeated by all the food! We were lucky to get a window seat and spent several hours munching our way through sandwiches on really fresh bread, scones, different teas and coffees and a choice of cake. We were served by Penny who was excellent; personable, knowledgeable and a real credit. Will definitely return for lunch when we are next in Cardiff.

Been here many times by myself or with friends. They have a good selection of very good teas. They also have vegan cakes, and normally about 3 options which is great. It is not cheap, £3+ for pot of tea, £3 for cake. It has a nice atmosphere & free wifi. I find the service here better than the one in the city centre. Plus there's lots of free car parking outside.

We met with friends for lunch here today, our first visit. It was justifiably busy and we had to wait a short while to get a table big enough for the four of us. The lunch menu is not large but there is enough variety to choose from. We opted for the sandwiches and were not disappointed! All of the options we tried (chicken, beef and smoked salmon) were absolutely delicious and served with a side-salad (with a really tasty dressing). We especially liked the variation in breads used. We all opted for tea (there is a long list of different teas and coffees to choose from). We followed this with a slice of carrot cake (delicious). The cake display unit had an 'interesting' selection to choose from including chocolate and avocado also spinach and pistachio. Surprisingly there were no sponge-type cakes (disappointing for a Victoria sponge lover, hence the 4/5), I can see why another reviewer thought the cakes bland.

Afternoon tea for two was wonderful. Huge variety of teas to choose from, and the egg timer for brewing explained to us. 3 types of sandwiches, a slice of cake each from the cabinet which we selected when we arrived, and warm scones with plenty of jam, cream and strawberries. Also chocolate truffles that rendered us speechless!! Service was exceptional, the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. Will definitely go back again.

The area is spoilt for choice with coffee shops and tea rooms. We chose this one hoping it had improved on previous visits, sadly it hasn't . The coffee was luke warm and the cakes and pastries we had were just about edible leaving an aftertaste. It is such a pity as it is in a great location. Come on Waterloo gardens wake up and 'smell the coffee' there is far too much competition in the neighbourhood offering far superior fayre.

Although we're originally from South Wales, my wife and I both lived in London from 2004-2013 where the Artisan coffee scene is huge. 2 years ago we moved to the Middle East where no one can make a decent flat white! This Christmas we found ourselves back in Cardiff visiting friends and relatives - and sought out a decent coffee shop. We'd tried a few and had been pretty disappointed but then stumbled across a review of Waterloo Gardens in the Independent. A quick car trip from the city centre and WOW! Proper artisan coffee in an absolutely delightful shop - fantastic! Definitely worth a visit :-)
