Wateredge Inn in South Lakeland

We have been to The Wateredge Inn a couple of times for drinks when visiting Ambleside. It is set in a fabulous location with amazing views of Windermere and is dog friendly. The interior of the bar is also very nice. We called in for lunch today and the first dissapointment was having to pay £5 in the car park. That's the minimum amount. I appreciate it's a deterrent to stop non-customers using the car park. But paying customers should not have to pay and the amount should be refunded when ordering. We wrongly assumed they may serve Sunday roasts, they don't! The queue to order food and drink took a ridiculously long time to get served. My partner ordered ham hock, which came with a 'dollop' of mash and a tiny amount of gravy, it looked pitiful. The ham hock looked nothing like any ham hock I'd ever seen. And to be honest, I wouldn't have given it to my dog. It was very fatty. I ordered a bacon, brie & cranberry toastie, effectively dried up bacon, too much cranberry and brie which hadn't melted. It was as dry as a bone. Neither of us enjoyed our meal. I would not recommend the food, it was poor and not value for money. I do realise that most places have bad days, but that on top of the car park charge is enough for us not to return next time we're in the area.

Been here several times in the past. Food was lovely and a good service from staff. Only downside this time was that they have started charging for parking here. We paid £75.00 for 3 adult meals and one from the kids menu then £5 for parking. We found the facility quiet and were wondering if this was due to the introduction of the parking charge.

We love this place, for wither a stay or popping in for drinks or a meal. Location is to die for, right by the lake. We’ve been coming here for over 30 years. We were shocked to see it’s now £5 for just 2 hours parking, unless you are booked into one of their rooms. Got to say though, I’ve never seen so many parking spaces as we pulled in, then when we saw the parking sign, we now know why. But as previous room guests, at least you know you can get parked when you stay. It won’t deter us, but we just get disappointed how many places charge for parking.

Have been coming here for years for a drink and a meal but not anymore as they are now charging £5 for 2 hours parking!! and you don't get it back off your meal. Its only free to park if you are staying there. Such a shame as Im sure they will lose customers. Anyway had a lovely meal at Bowness instead with free parking - so their loss

Stunning location for a spot of lunch One of the loveliest lakeside spots we have found Simple pub grub, tasty Good selection of beers Service at bar was a little slow - but think it was an unexpected glorious sunny day and didn’t expect to be busy However food service wasn’t slow Staff were friendly and polite Will love to come again and enjoy that view Bonus has parking

Took a long time to get served and over 40 mins for the food to arrive ( we’d only ordered salad ,burger and scampi and chips) No apology or explanation- the food plus drinks was around £80. Ridiculously expensive- food really wasn’t special at all.

We are regular visitors to the Wateredge Inn and food is usually good however it has become expensive over the years. Staff are usually friendly and the pub is nice inside . However they have now started charging £5 just to park! You don’t get this back so it’s now an extra £5 on top of a drink or food. I won’t be going back- feel like they are squeezing more money on top of expensive food

During our visit to Ambleside we decided to stop here for some lunch, service was good and food was very tasty with plenty of choice on the menu.

We ate here twice while in the area, once for lunch and another time for an evening meal. We enjoyed all our meals and would particularly recommend the king prawn and monkfish curry or the fish and chips (the fish was nice and flakey and the batter was amazing – I have to say the best fish and chips I’ve had in quite a while). Good food, good service and excellent location.

Loaded chips were awful.. frozen chips, with cheese from a bottle.. no flavour, waste of £9… view was the best part, won’t be having a meal here.

A tardis like pub, bigger on the inside than it looks. Fast and efficient service at the bar and kitchen. Tasty and affordable food. We'll worth calling in for a bite to eat.

Been here several times over the years but in our recent visit we found that the food just isn’t that thrilling, especially for the price. Just average pub food now at Ambleside prices! EG:- undercooked chips, cookie dough pizza consisted of a super market cookie, heated up with some mini marshmallows….. really, the menu described something tasty…. but in reality nothing like. Shame. Seem to have lost their way, wouldn’t return. Tbh this has put us off the whole chain of pubs. Oh and sticky cutlery yuk!

Superb beer garden with loads of space and stunning view at the end of lake Windermere Perfect for a stop off if walking or just ambling around Ambleside Good quality food. More pricey due to the location but worth it as quality is cut above other pubs in the area I had pheasant Kiev. Absolutely gorgeous

The location and food here are excellent, I was part of a big group of people and everybody was happy with their meal. One small criticism, it is bar service, so if you have a table booked you need to check in at the bar, if you want to order drinks you need to do it at the bar, if you want to order food you need to do it at the bar etc so during busy periods the queue at the bar can get long! When we arrived to check in the man in the queue in front of us mentioned he had been waiting 35mins and not been served yet. We sent one of our group back up to order our food/drinks, and by the time they had finished placing all our orders the queue was snaking around the bar area.

Excellent breakfast choice and all delicious , we also had dinner both nights and the stay was just perfect. The staff were very nice , professional & caring.

The location is amazing - fabulous view of the lake and good local ale. But don’t bother with the food. We order roast baguette of the day. A slightly undercooked and anaemic looking baguette with a slice of roast pork arrived. No gravy, or sauces just fry bread. No apple sauce available. Did get some mustard. All v dry, bland and not much effort made. Service was good but too few staff meant queuing to be served took a while. Overall I think they are just taking advantage of tourist trade with overpriced mediocre food.

Very disappointed with the food here. Lots of dishes weren’t available and what we did order was not at all good. Would not recommend the meals here. Such a shame as it’s a lovely place in a great location.

You know when you want to go out for a meal and want to book a table so you are not disappointed…? Then avoid this pub if you are only a group of 7 because they will not take your booking…unless you if you are a group of 8 or more…! So we had to walk into Ambleside in the rain…but as we passed the pub we looked inside and it was 80% empty. They lost £225 of our money.No doubt it will be shut soon because of mismanagement.

Stopped here after a long hike and managed to get a table outside with the dogs. Ordered a bratwurst and a double cheeseburger as our meals which arrived in really good time and tasted good.

Had a wonderful pub meal, fish and chips were all excellent. Staff were wonderful job, Vicky put a smile on our face even though she rushed off her feet! We will be back !

Large pub with a great variety of spaces and lovely outside area on Lake Windermere. Food was excellent top quality.

This restaurant is conveniently placed with a nice view over the lake. You place your food and drink order at the bar and they are delivered to your table. I had fish 'n chips and my niece scampi and chips. The food and service were but the ambience was lacking and I was conscious of several dissatisfied customers complaining at the bar.

Poor service at the bar. Had a 5 minute discussion/argument about ordering 2 drinks a pepsi and pepsi Max. All I wanted was to order a drink and sit at a table. It became a convoluted process and the bar and restaurant area was very quiet. Very confusing. Location excellent, staff need customer service training. If you don't enjoy hospitality industry there are plenty of other industries you can work in!!!

Extremely rude staff and s**t service. Took 10 minutes to be served 2 soft drinks by an argumentive member of staff.....

I live in the lakes and brought my friends here for food and a drink!! Whilst the views are fabulous and staff are great the food is shocking!!! I know they need to pay for the renovation but seriously ….. £12 for the smallest salad I have ever had just tasteless mush! Don’t bother with the crayfish salad £4 for about 4 chips!!! I was shocked and will not be returning such a shame I used to love the place but gone seriously down hill …

The place has a very good location and also has good food,is good , enjoyed the setting a lot ! Lovely time by the Lake ,and staff not very hospitable but nonetheless had a very good time

No sunday roast ??? What is that about ?? Ordered a gamon with eggs and chips time 12.30pm. Chips looked like they had been blanched reheated, gamon was so thin to cook it was curled up at the edge and burnt ( no taste to it just burnt through) sorry I have been before and loved the food ? ? But this was not the standard that I have had before!!!!! Will I come back ??? Maybe try some other place next time, the town is full of restaurants.

Called in yesterday a warning you have to queue for ages for drinks or food. I ordered a burger and my wife the fish and chips as many items on the menu had sold out, the fish and chips were well overcooked and my chips...

Had Diner & breakfast both superb, staff are friendly & efficient. There is priority service for residents in both restaurant &bar which is a bonus at busy time.

This pub is situated in a prime location and will always be popular with visitors. The food is pretty disappointing and the service is basic. We felt no compulsion to return.

Beautiful Inn and beautiful location with picturesque views but so let down by poor organisation and poor processes that could be quickly rectified. This is clearly not the staffs fault of which there were many, but supervisors or management.This place could be a cash cow and turn over tables far quicker but instead there remains long waits for service and long queues outside and yet plenty of free tables inside/outside. Obscure rules such as you can’t eat on the grass but can on the gravel which in places is less than 1 metre away, makes no sense. It’s almost like they don’t want to make money here.Shame

We visited here twice. The first time, the staff were all pleasant and welcoming. Food was ok. Not the best for the price, but standard average pub food.Second visit, the waitress that was serving our area (middle aged lady) was rude, unwelcoming and unfriendly to everyone. Even when taking our orders seemed like it was an inconvenience to her. Truly shocking compared to staff on our previous visit.

Pre Christmas visit, pub food and pub accommodation at 5 star hotel prices. Rooms and furniture dated, carpet seen better days, food basic pub grub, not a lot to offer other than views of the lake. Probably hikers paradise muddy boots and all.

My husband and I brought my parents here for an evening meal and overnight stay. Despite Covid restrictions, we weren't disappointed. The staff were exceptional, the rooms clean and warm and both our evening meal and breakfast were delicious. The four of us will most certainly be back, my Dad would have loved an extra night, but due to work commitments this wasn't possible on this occasion. Couldn't fault any aspect. Clean, warm, welcoming, views that are out of this world and amazing staff. What more could you ask?Well done to the whole team.See you again soon.

We visited on a very busy lunch time, all the staff seemed to be working hard but were rushed off their feet. Despite this the food was lovely despite being on the expensive side.

We stayed last weekend. Amazing room and view. Very Covid safe. Helpful, friendly, professional staff. Great location on the lake with just a short walk in to Ambleside. The breakfast was one of the best we have had and sets you up for the day. Evening meal, lovely, generous portions and reasonably priced. Lovely snug area for residents with a open fire. Can’t recommend this hotel enough. Can’t wait to stay again.

We have been here many times and it did not let us down. Despite the limited covid menu, we still had a nice meal and the staff were very well organized.

Sí, han estado sirviendo alimentos y bebidas en vasos de plástico, cubiertos desechables y cajas de papel. Si estás sentado afuera, no entiendo por qué tanto alboroto. Después de un viaje en barco desde Bowness - on - Windermere, visitamos este pub para tomar una copa ya que estábamos experimentando un clima hermoso. Nos sentamos con vistas al lago, qué vista tan espectacular. Vale la pena una visita, el personal fue extremadamente profesional y cumplió con las restricciones de Covid para que todos se sintieran seguros y bienvenidos al mismo tiempo.

Es probable que haya una cola corta, pero no se desanime: ¡este es nuestro pub favorito en los lagos! Podrían ser mucho más eficientes si tuvieran una cola para comida y otra para bebidas, y esto nos ha desanimado de volver. After arriving at waterhead by boat from Bowness we decided not to walk up to Ambleside Town Centre due to it being very sunny, hot and having 2 under 5s and heavily pregnant person in our group. There isn't much choice of places to eat near the pier and the queue for this place was at least 15 groups long. We decided to queue and got to the front in around 25 minutes. The staff were very friendly and well organised and were seating people in drinking only areas if they didn't want food and could seat people indoors or outdoors. The queue to order food and drink went down very quickly and the service by the car staff was excellent. The food was served in cardboard boxes and was very nice. The outdoor areas have fantastic views of the lake and despite it being very busy the tables were spread apart and we felt we had adequate space. We would definitely visit here again.

It was okay, the food was okay - the chicken burger was all bun and a small piece of chicken, the vegan salad promised hummus but needed copious amounts of mayonnaise added and not only that but being barked orders at by a clearly stressed out waitress didn’t really add to the nice relaxed mood we hoping for at the waterside. Fantastic views though so that makes up for a lot

Horrible rude staff. Inconsiderate and shirty. Will never visit nor recommend a visit. Claimed to have to sanitise between people at tables then let other families sit at it unsantisied. Made a nice day horrible by staff yelling at children.

Stopped off here for a drink. Fantastic establishment and location. Have to say how well they are dealing with COVID situation. Very organised. Young man who was acting as customer greeter very professional and friendly.

Everything was really well thought out to cope with the social distancing required now that the lockdown has been eased. The staff were so friendly and helpful and they explained everything that was required by the customer. The food was excellent and the portions were spot on, price was good and the beer was just what was required. Excellent facilities for disabled or people with limited mobility. Can’t praise this place enough, they went the extra mile to make your time there enjoyable.

Had a fantastic lunch today outside in the sunshine. The staff were really busy trying to organise people safely to keep social distancing. But the did it and we felt safe. Great choice, lovely staff great value. Can recommend the chunky fish chowder and the fish and chips. Both good quality dishes, cooked well, hot and tasty. Nice surroundings, very clean and relaxed atmosphere. Definitely be back.

Went in both evenings we were away for a drink. Lovely atmosphere, very cosy lovely fire on the go both evenings. We did not have a dog, but dogs are welcomed here. Waitresses very helpful nothing seems to much trouble.

After a few long boat trips on the lake we stopped here for lunch. The food menu wasn't vast but there was so etching we both liked. I had the fish pie which was very generous, and he had a steak ciabatta. The quality was great and views were fantastic, I think it could be a little better value however.

Been here many times and been happy,but had a very poor and over priced meal there tonight,fish chowder,hardly any fish in it,a few peas ,and a poor sauce ,and a couple of chunks of bread,utterly ripped off ,

Lovely setting. Beautifully decorated. Spotlessly clean. Super friendly staff. Dogs made very welcome in the area by the big open fire. Food superb. Ate there twice in the week and would love to go and stay there at some point in the future. A must when in Ambleside.

We stopped in Ambleside and popped in here for a quick lunch. Had the dog with us too.A lovely atmosphere, nice looking place.. chicken burger and Angus steak burger was ordered.. best burger I’ve ever had.. both meals were fab.. Will definitely come again if we are back this way.

We always call in here when staying in Ambleside & have always found the food, ales, ambience & service fantastic.However it’s a real shame that on arrival at the bar to order on this recent occasion the young fair haired female bartender was so disinterested, giving no eye contact, a tad ignorant & no sense of humour. Some training in geniality & a smile for the customer wouldn’t go amiss. Let’s the side down as other staff were courteous & engaging. It kind of put a downer to our visit as we had just arrived for our weekend stay. It’s interesting how staff attitude/presentation can impact on customer experience.

The menu was one you’d recognise from most inns these days and there was something for everyone and it came in good sized portions. There were some local beers alongside a standard selection of wines, spirits and more well-known beers. However, nothing really stood out apart from, of course, the view. Whilst there are nicer pubs and restaurants in Ambleside few have such a great view of the lake.Overall, it’s worth a visit but I doubt I'd go back.

Spacious, clean and comfortable bedroom meant we could enjoy the room in bad weather although accessed by outside stairway. Umbrellas provided so not really a problem. Very good breakfast although limited choice. This hotel won't break the bank and will meet nearly everyone's expectations. Absolutely lovely staff and a thoroughly enjoyable stay

This is the best beer garden in the whole of Cumbria. Lots of choice and staff are very nice. Very friendly family atmosphere.

Met with a sarcastic 'it's not 3 o' clock' yet when we enquired if our room was ready (sometimes it is possible to access a room early).

Reservé Lodge o suite de pescadores como sorpresa por el aniversario de bodas, sí, un poco más, pero ¡qué habitación! ! y luego la vista! , wow, el personal es increíble, el desayuno es todo lo que quieres, la ubicación es perfecta.

Tuve una comida encantadora, un servicio rápido y eficiente, el personal tiene una actitud encantadora, comida limpia, de buena calidad y precio razonable. Excelente ubicación también. Recomendado. Cada vez que visito el servicio y la calidad siempre es consistente y el bar / restaurante siempre está lleno.

Hermosa ubicación, personal servicial y amable. Teníamos 2 perros mojados grandes, así que preferimos comer al aire libre, (aunque te permiten ser perros en el interior) muy complacientes e incluso salieron a traer algunas golosinas para los perros. Servicio rápido y deliciosos chiles con carne y nachos. No me puedo quejar del lugar.

Stopped off for a drink and the bar is very clean and welcoming. Dogs allowed :).

Always busy when we come to Ambleside. We’ve been during day for something to eat and sat outside in the sun and also been at night when there’s been live music. A good place to stop and have a drink.

We didn't eat here just stopped for a pot of tea for two (£5) which was good. Unfortunately it as raining when we arrived but even sonsitting at a widow table the views are amazing, an absolutely great location.

We ate here on both nights whilst weekend away in Ambleside, food was excellent , location great & waitress Irene was so friendly, she made us feel welcome & is a real asset to the team there. ( Irene even brought over extra butter portions for my mash as she overheard I love lurpak with my mash potato) great hospitality!

Afternoon stroll, came down for an afternoon drink. Absolutely appalling to see staff outside the front doors smoking. Customers had to walk through smoke to get indoors! We were going to order food but decided to go back into Ambleside. This place just gets worse each time we visit .

Great views and a great place to sit and look at them. Staff weren't very friendly but that didn't bother us. I ordered a J2O and we were given an alternative without being asked if we wanted it. The fish chowder starter was absolutely delicious. Thick and tasty and full of salmon and cod. Pity they didn't serve it as a main. We ordered steak burger and crispy chicken burger. Both arrived promptly and looked good but were very disappointing. The chicken was soggy and steak burger was extremely chewy. The jalapeño mayo and slaw were the best part of the dish. The waitress wasn't bothered when we told her about it, just shrugged and moved on.

There can be no finer places to enjoy a pint of beer in the September sunshine, than the beer garden here at The Wateredge Inn. A good selection of Ales and Gins served with a smile by polite, friendly staff.

Visited last night with five other family members. We hadn’t booked. The staff were so so accommodating to find us a table. Our complete evening was fantastic. The food was great, the beer was great and the staff were the most friendly and helpful I have come across in a long time. Specifically Claire was such a lovely lady. A very special member of staff who is a huge asset for this great place.

Went for a family meal and it was by far the worst experience of our long weekend. This place clearly lures people in based on the fantastic location, but walking inside is like slipping back into the 1970's. Forego the view, and travel the extra couple of minutes into Ambleside where every meal was infinitely better than here. Only saving grace was the good selection of real ales, but the wine was horrendous (but probably very good for removing paint, nail varnish etc)! We were then unfortunate enough to still be around when the "entertainment" started, which was a truly surreal experience. How anyone's night could be enhanced by a couple of ropy pub singers in this day and age is beyond me! In summary it was a truly magical experience and I can't wait to drive past this place next time I'm in the Lakes.

Very disappointed for what we paid.

Came here with bf for an evening meal because unfortunately it was close to 8pm and our first choice, the YHA Ambleside Lakeside restaurant, had stopped serving (and from what I could see that people were eating there - the food looked good).

I've stayed and eaten here before and it was excellent. Unfortunately this time the sausage wasn't cooked correctly. It had been precooked, let to cool and then thrown back on the grill so was on the cold side and rubbery.

We visited here after a day in Ambleside for our evening meal with children and dog. Restaurant was dog friendly and had a varied menu for adults and kids. Food was lovely but to be honest not really worth the price paid. The children’s meals were nice and my husband had the fish pie which looked (and he said was) delicious. I had the Ribeye steak which I paid £22:50 for. It was cooked just as I asked but was chewy/gristly and definitely not worth any more than £12/£14. Children’s and husband’s meals were lovely but overpriced. You’re paying for the location with this one. I’d say stop off for a drink by the waters edge but wander on up the hill for far superior, better value food.

Great environment to have a meal - fantastic views and lots of seating options (indoor and outdoor). Good parking across the road. Lovely lunch and we would be back again, hopefully on a better day......

Called on the off chance, the meal 'scampi' was so nice we came back later in the week. If the weather is nice, which it was for us, sit in the gardens overlooking Windermere lake. Lovely - well recommend.
