Just moved into the village and been into the pub 3 times. It's a great place. Food is lovely, atmosphere is brilliant and the hosts are so kind and welcoming. I even left my wallet on the bar and a kind customer handed it in and it was there when I called back to collect it. I'm really pleased to have this as my local and will be back frequently.

It was newly opened and very welcoming. We spent a few nights having one or two, maybe three 🍺🍻 On the last day of our holiday, all 10 of us went for dinner. We had a great night. The service and the food were great. I wish them every success in the future 👏 👏 👏 Our sharing platter went down very nicely. 👍

We booked here for my first mothers day. On arrival we weren't given any menus and had to ask for them. The menu was limited to a roast or shellfish. 30 minutes after we arrived nobody had come to take our order so we asked if we needed to go to the bar to order, to which we were told nobody would be taking our order until the large table behind us had their meals and then once they had taken our order, we would have a 45 minute wait for our food. The meals for the large table came out and still nobody took our order. We ended up having to leave and get chips on the way home as we were so hungry and the baby was becoming restless. Really disappointed on what should have been such a special day.

Went today with family for Mothers Day. Booked for 12.30pm. Night before an email came through, it had changed to 12pm. No phonecall to advise of the change or request we come early. Called the morning of to ask about the change to be advised there was a few booked in at the same time and they didn't want to delay food. We accommodated as best we could and arrived at 12.05pm. They were not ready for us. Tried to seat us at a table that wasn't ours nor would accommodate us. When we moved to our table that actually had our name on as reserved. Another group had just arrived on the table next to us at 12.30pm. No menus. At 12.45pm were finally given menus after the party that arrived after us got given theirs and had their order taken. 10 minutes later our order was taken. Starters came and one was missing and others had almost finished their starter before it arrived. We then waited an hour for the mains to arrive. After two more table were served before us. This was a terrible experience. They were not ready for us when asking us to arrive early and we still got served after others had arrived later. Food when it arrived was missing items we saw on others at tables next to us. Yorkshire puddings were also burnt and everything was drowned in gravy that was not very nice. Huge disappointment on a day like today. A restaurant asking you to arrive early and to still not be served first was poor service. Had to go to the bar for drink top ups as we were not asked while seated. Most definitely will not be returning.

Amazing food, atmosphere, staff and landlord! We had the potatoe and leek soup of the day, burger, steak and ale pie and rosemary fries - and Kevin, the landlord, even gave us both complementary mushroom and cheese pasties to hold us over until the kitchen opened beforehand! It all tasted like it was homemade, fresh and fantastic quality 🤤 this pub is so friendly and inviting with such a warm atmosphere. We got to talking with the super kind landlord alot before dinner. Visited with our small dog and sat next to a beautiful fire. We will be back - 10/10 from us!!

Went for Christmas Day Lunch first sitting. The food and service was extremely disappointing. Had to chase the main course after being there 2 1/2 hours and was cold when it arrived despite warning them we wanted hot food. At that point we left, ruined our Christmas Day, went home for Heinz soup. Everyone in the room were fed up of waiting too. The chef definitely over estimated his ability to deliver the menu. The conservatory is not very big so didn't need to cater for a lot of people at all. Telephoned the next day to complain and spoke to the manager Kevin, was very blasé in attitude, didn't receive an apology. Thankfully got our deposit back. Avoid the General Burgoygne.

My friend and I went for Sunday lunch, and the usual chef was away. We ordered the beef roast. As much as the meal went, the beef was lovely, plentiful. The roast potatoes were the size of the top of my thumb, and 5 of them ! Vegetables were delicious, sprouting broccoli and carrots. The Yorkshire pudding was OK. But, no mash, no boiled. The meal was lacking, and as if they had ran out of potatoes. I decided to have a pudding, I chose Apple Strudle, although the bowl and the custard was nuked by microwave. The struddle was cold..however they changed for fresh peice of Strudle and it was hot. The staff were attentive, pleasant and I guess they have had better days and I will go again when the usual chefs returned.

Booked a table for 5 adults, 1 child and 2 dogs, requested if we could be seated in the bar area as we will have dogs with us. Arrived 20 minutes early thinking it wouldn't be a problem as thought we could sit and have a drink before our meal. When we arrived we were asked if we had booked then asked what we wanted to drink whilst we were all stood around a very small area, staff seemed flustered and then we were shown to our table in the dining room not the bar as requested. We were given menus which were not the same as we had viewed on line, quite limited options. Most of us went for the Sunday roast, 2 beef and 2 pork loin with crackling and apple sauce, and 1 fish and chips. We waited a good 20 minutes before anyone came to take our orders, it wasn't particularly busy that afternoon either. Whilst waiting for our food to arrive we ordered another pint and a coke, the pint arrived but no coke. In all it took an hour for food to arrive and I wish I could say it was worth the wait. The fish and chips was disappointing, the fish was sat on about 14 of the smallest chips we have ever seen! The roast beef arrived which looked nice but there was an onion chutney on the plate which wasn't mentioned on the menu and spoilt the meal for one of our party. The pork loin with crackling was a pork chop with its fat burnt, we got 3 dry small roast potatoes, a smear of mash, a long carrot that wasn't cooked and some tasteless greens. I'm going to say that some of the food seemed to come from the freezer especially the chips, very disappointing and to charge £17 each for the pork roast (pork chop) and fish and handful of frozen chips, and £18 for the roast beef was a total rip off! Safe to say we won't be back

First time visit for many many years. The food, when it finally arrived, was good. The delay of over an hour between ordering the food and it arriving at our table, despite there only being 1 other table occupied in the restaurant, made this a very disappointing evening.

Booked with a group of friends for Sunday Lunch after seeing the photos on google. How misleading. Complete waste of money - £18 for the worst Sunday lunch and Yorkshire puds I’ve ever had, with an array of vegetables that were evidently reheated (sadly not enough as the whole dinner was luke warm at best). Avoid. I’d like to find some positive from it, but unfortunately there simply wasn’t one.

We were told the specials and given a menu we decided on the Roast Beef, minimal time to wait, the food was piping hot and absolutely delicious, the beef cut beautifully and melted in your mouth, everything seasoned to perfection and very tasty. I opted for the plum crumble which again was delicious, the crumble topping itself was lovely and crunchy. I'm very particular about roast dinners and this was definitely in my top three

Tense atmosphere. There was just me and my wife and two other people in. One of the other customers had spilled his drink and started to demand a mop whilst the only barmaid was serving us, he was swearing in a loud voice, the barmaid was summoned into the kitchen soon after serving us and was told off by the chef in a loud voice for letting someone play on the pool table?? The pub was v quiet so every body could hear them. Meanwhile the customer (a large young man) was pacing around the pub swearing at the top of his voice about the chef, (we felt threatened) and then he marched into kitchens whilst barmaid was being told off, he was told to leave the kitchen by the chef, then he and barmaid went out side and stood at the other side of the window where we was sitting and we heard the angry young man compaining and swearing 🤬 loudly for 10 mins (all this time the bar is left unattended) the young man then came back in and marched back into the kitchen, apologised then was told to leave again, the barmaid, young man and another young lad aged 14 then stood in front of us and openely talked and complained about the chef (more swearing) as if we were not there, we asked the angry young man to stop swearing, he then went outside. This was an uncomfortable and bizarre experience.

We had a table booked for 4 covers at 7.30pm. We were running 10 minutes late but called and we were assured it was fine. We arrived at 7.40pm, placed an order for 4 starters and mains. The waitress, who was lovely came back and told us that none of our party could have starters due to our late arrival, as the kitchen closed at 8pm. We questioned it, but took it on the chin. We ate and ordered deserts. This time a member of the bar staff came and sat with us and explained that we couldn't have desert either due to our late arrival. She was clearly embarrassed and very apologetic and explained the Chef was losing his temper. We could hear banging pots and pans from a quite obviously angry Chef coming from the kitchen. The meals we were allowed to order were lovely, the waiting on staff were great and clearly bullied by the Chef. If you eat here, make sure you question a later reservation, you may only have time for a pot noodle! Awful service, we will never return.

When we enquired how long the food would be, we were met with an unenthusiastic response.. Not good at all. Sunday roast took 1hr 15 mins to arrive (and we had to ask “when” a few times), however they did only have one person serving (first issue). Like the rest of the meal the meal came out luke warm at best, beef went from one extreme to the other, roast potatoes been kept warm for too long and the veg (green and red cabbage with one slice of carrot) tried and failed to be too posh! For £18 it was shocking and loads left on the plates. I did complain to the bar manager who said he would pass it on to the chef, I did offer to tell him myself, he declined, offered no apology and no discount off the bill. I’m a local, love the pub and I so desperately wanted the food to be top notch but our food was a real let down☹️ Such a shame to get something so basic so wrong, if you want a great roast go to the Stan Laural in Ulverston. Sorry the General but of you want to improve the food you need to be able to take feedback. Alan.

‘Food Served 12pm - 8pm’ the sign says. Seeing this we (2 people) popped in at 1:30pm. After asking for a menu we received a gruff, ‘bookings only’ as a reply. At this stage there were (and I counted them!) 19 people in the pub - 8 of whom were already eating. I asked what time is the next available booking and an, equally gruff, ‘we’re fully booked’ was the customer-friendly response. Seriously? Literally nothing possible for the next 6+ hours! No, ‘I’m sorry, sir, let me check if we can squeeze you in’. Oh no. Just a wall of negativity from a man whose whole demeanour screamed, ‘I can’t be arsed!’ We settled for 2 pints and a packet of crisps and he got 1/3 of that order incorrect! The General Burgoyne remains an amazing pub and is one of the few remaining in the area but, with this lack of interest in its customers, it’s days will be numbered. If the gentleman who served us works there, he needs to be retrained. If he runs it, it’s time to sell! PS I’ve given the food 3 stars as, from what I could see, it looked good.

Oh dear oh dear what has happened to the food at the General. Burgoyne. The worst meal we've probably ever had... Anywhere. Well overcooked meat, A few micro waved wizened vegetables the few that were there on each of our dishes. A few over cooked microwaved chips. An anemic pie slumped in the middle of a swamp of black gravy accompned by four green over microwaved green beans. There was nothing about any of our meals that the chef should be charging for.. As a family night out it was a disaster.

We were staying in the village in a holiday cottage which we have done several times before. We have always enjoyed the Burgoyne for home made food, friendly locals and staff and the quiz night. We were aware John the previous landlord had left and the pub had new management so weren't sure what to expect. We were pleased to find the new management also to be friendly and are obviously trying new events, menus etc. The food we had during the week was really tasty and apparently the new couple are both chefs and doing the food themselves. We had to wait a while on one occasion when it was busier but management apologised for this and it didn't mar our evening. We look forward to our next visit to the area and to see how the pub develops. We wish Claire and Kev every success!

. . definitivamente volveremos - gracias de nuevo

Great place. Josie was an amazing waitress; attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The rotisserie chicken was tasty and the portions were generous. 5 🌟

I made an online reservation and needed to amend it to a later date due to a change in work schedule. I did an online amendment and no one got back to me to confirm or deny. I called up and explained and the friendly young lady on the phone informed me that they can amend the booking but I still have to pay the full price. I had missed the free change by 12 hours. Keeping in mind I was moving to a later date and from weekend to weekday, not cancelling, their policy of keeping the full amount is nothing short of disgusting excessive greed. Britain has become a money grabbing place and this is a class example of the kind of practice unnecessarily taking money out of people’s pockets unfairly. Just because it’s policy, doesn’t make it justifiable.
