Outstanding food and a brilliantly hosted evening. The food was delicious - the best I have ever eaten. Sharon was a perfect host, engaging the guests in conversation and creating a lovely atmosphere. If you are going to Ilfracombe book ahead - it is worth planning for!

Went to the wards for a birthday meal and drinks what a pleasant surprise. Staff were 10 to none and the owners. Made a point of intraducing themselves and spending time with us. Do not walk past this place as you will miss out. We all had food we old dream about and we are no strangers to fine dining. High quality food in a seaside town. From the off-menu garlic bread through creamy garlic mushrooms to whitebait starters to fresh hake, venison steak and amazing ribeye steak, the food was fantastic. Accompanied by a lovely Picpoul (2 bottles) what is not to like. And the welcome was first class. Book a table to enjoy the experience. First class.

Was on holiday with my husband and my two brother in law’s and was met with a very warm welcome by Sharon. The food was absolutely fabulous from starter’s to dessert, service was excellent to. When visiting again we will definitely eat here.

A small intimate restaurant. Doesn’t look much from the street but absolutely worth a visit. Must be some of the best food in Ilfracombe. Only 22 seats inside plus a few more outside if the weather is good so certainly quiet small. It is family run with family members front of house, waiting on tables and in the kitchen. The food is fresh and all meals are individually prepared. The food is absolutely first class and the ambience is warm and friendly. I unreservedly recommend this restaurant. An added bonus for us was the fact that it is dog friendly.

Just perfect in every way. The freshest seabass I've ever eaten. Friendly, efficient service from start to finish: it was like visiting old friends, they made us feel so at home. Can't recommend highly enough. Thank you xx

We ate here twice in a week and were not disappointed. Lovely warm, friendly restaurant. Sharon made us feel so welcome and went out of her way to make sure we were enjoying ourselves, including making sure our autistic son’s fish was cooked very simply so he wouldn’t flip out at over anything green! This is the best place we have eaten at in Ilfracombe! Sharon and her husband plus son and sons girlfriend, made our evening there last night so special! Not only was the food the best we gave eaten but their company, the location of the restaurant, the decor and the whole vibe / feel to the place was just prefect. It is an intimate dining experience which you could do as a couple on your own and have an intimate evening on your own or you could chat to everyone in there and get involved in all the discussions being held! I’ve not eaten anywhere like this before and we loved it. The menu is excellent. I had prawns in a sauce on a lovely fresh tastey bed of salad - a very generous serving. He had a Camembert cheese with chilli flakes and huge chunks of warm bread - a sharing dish but he managed it all 😅 For the main course he had one of the specials which was a 16oz pork chop which was MASSIVE and cooked to perfection along with exceptionally tastey vegetables of carrots, beans and red cabbage. I had the 28 day rib eye and it was again, cooked to perfection. The seating was so comfortable as well which always helps! The desert menu was all gluten free along with dairy free for some of the items and this made the night even better. The sticky toffee pudding was the best and that was from a person who doesn’t eat gluten free foods so wasn’t expecting it to taste the way it did. Sharon was the most entertaining owner we have ever had the honour to be able to sit and laugh and chat to after our meal. She went out of her way to come over and help us continue our night there. Her husband does all the cooking and he came out and also joined in. We were introduced to her son and his girlfriend and it just made the night the most involved and special one we have had ‘just going out for a meal’. We will definitely go back! Thankyou Sharon! X

I am disappointed that Wards only do their Steak and Kidney pudding night a few times a year. I would normal recommend it but please do not turn up as there will not be enough room for us, as we only managed to get a booking last time.

Superb! Amazing restaurant with perfect food, accompanied by fabulous service from all of the friendly team. Relaxed and informal atmosphere, lovely decorated restaurant. A good choice of freshly made dishes, with locally sourced ingredients and prepared with pride to create the perfect evening. Portion sizes were perfect, with plenty of fresh vegetables and potatoes to accompany the meal. During our visit to Ilfracombe this restaurant was fully booked each evening they opened, so advance booking is essential.

Tried to book this restaurant the week before our arrival. Unfortunately they closed on the evenings we wanted but the communication was good via email. We happened to be in Ilfracombe on the Sunday and as the weather was nice thought we would chance a visit. We ordered a Sunday Lunch which was nice and at the time I explained that unfortunately we were unable to book prior to our visit. Sharon then asked if we wanted to book for our last night to which we agreed. We agreed on 7:00pm but she suggested we come at 6:45pm to ensure our order would be taken before another large party which was booked in at 7:00pm. We had walked in on Sunday from the Torrs so hadn't attempted to park in Ilfracombe and was surprised how full the car parks were on a Thursday evening. We arrived at Wards just BEFORE 7:00pm and The hosts face dropped. She explained that she had let the table to a walk in. She said we only keep tables open for 15 minutes after the booking. We explained it still wasn't 15 minutes after the booking but noticed the table already had drinks so clearly she would not have waited the 15 mins anyway. She also had our contact number and would have thought a simple call or message would have confirmed our attendance. We cannot express our disappointment after making the booking in person and after enjoying a meal how we were treated. It would appear a quick buck is more important here than repeat customers.

Hosts fitted us in at short notice. Only a few indoor tables when we visited but everyone was having fun. Lovely atmosphere and great food and wine. We were made to feel welcome from the start. Felt like we’d been to a friend’s for dinner!...

This homely small restaurant was a great experience. Sharon made us feel like we had gone to her house for dinner. Our dogs were very welcome. Food was great, atmosphere even better. Definitely recommend this place.

Arranged a booking for Sunday lunch by email with Sharon . When we arrived we revived a very friendly welcome & were sat at our table . The food arrived quickly & was was lovely ! The beef was very tender & a selection of vegetables were offered . The staff are all friendly, this restaurant is clearly a favourite of locals & it was lovely to see the family atmosphere. Would definitely recommend this restaurant as the meal we received was of a good quality & reasonable priced .

My wife and I visited on 21st August had some amazing food, I had the Lamb my wife had the fish, both were cooked to perfection by the owner chef, his wife was front of house and was so attentive and knowledgeable, all staff were first rate. Wine list and drinks were very reasonable and a good selection, we shall visit again very soon, thank you all so much.

We booked for Sunday lunch here the day before the August Bank Holiday, we both ordered the roast beef and it was tasty and well presented with all the trimmings on a sharing platter, it was a nice meal but unfortunately parts of the meal were luke warm, we then shared a pudding (which was nice and hot)

I booked our visit back in March for the August Bank Holiday as I know, having visited two years previously, how busy it gets.A delightful restaurant perfectly located in Ilfracombe town centre 5 minutes from the sea front and harbour.Seating inside and outside for couples or families.Sunday is Sunday lunch day.There was a party of ten seated already but the hostess and waitress were welcoming and attentive taking our orders swiftly.I opted for the Beef. My hubby the Pork. There was also gammon on offer.Our order arrived within fifteen minutes and was piping hot. A platter of meat, more than enough! With roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. Plus Stuffing all in gravy. A separate dish of Carrots Swede Red Cabbage and Green beans. Plus a gravy boat.The meat was tender and delicious!! The vegetables perfectly cooked. Complements to the chef who was on his own! Piping hot and if you wanted more just ask !! Although stuffed we had to try the puddings. I had the waffle with honey and ice cream. My husband the blueberry crumble with ice cream. Again not disappointed just delicious.Very reasonably priced would highly recommend and definitely will be back next August Bank Holiday for year four!

We’ve been visiting Ilfracombe for years with family and friends. This is Hands down the best Sunday roast in Ilfracombe, and John’s steak are alsoAmazing !!! Sharon and John the owners are amazing and work tirelessly to look after their customers. It’s a very homely restaurant, they always look after us attentively and nothing is too much trouble. The restaurant is always clean and wellPresented and the food is just amazing!!You will not be disappointed.

Stinky place. We barely been able to seat outside from the smell. Tables and chairs not clean after used. Menu options very poor and prices like in London. Will never go back.

Visited in August with my husband and baby, staff were really friendly and helpful with our little one. The roast dinner was delicious, and the portions were very generous. Highly recommended.

We ate here while staying in Ilfracombe on the recommendation of the owner of our guesthouse and had a very enjoyable evening. Food tonight was top notch. Quality home-cooked food including home-made stick toffee pudding - lovely. Try the boulangerie potatoes as they are superb. The woman in charge deserves a gold award in hospitality and clearly knows how to deal with people. Top place !!!!

We came in for a roast dinner and are very glad we did. It was excellent and very generous portions indeed.They were so friendly, catered for a group including vegan and fussy kids, so friendly. Also great view of the church from the well kept garden. The beer was lovely too, chilled and well kept.

We went for Sunday roast with my sister and niece and cousin and my dad was in a wheelchair the food was amazing and you couldn’t ask for more great place good staff and will return when I go back to see the family as they live local great great great food and drinks best roast I’ve had out in a very very very long time keep it and can’t wait to return

Lovely evening at Wards Bistro. Very welcoming, the food was cooked to perfection and the produce was top notch. Nothing fancy, but delicious home cooking in a relaxed environment. Very happy we secured this last minute cancellation. Would recommend booking ahead when visiting Ilfracombe.

Lovely welcome, fantastic, hot, tasty food. Service excellent. Reasonable prices. My only criticism would be the size of the rack of lamb, definitely not enough but absolutely delicious.

Visited wards with friends whilst on holiday what a fantastic evening. The owner met us in a friendly manor and looked after our group all night joking and giving excellent service . The food was delicious ,mushrooms to start and rib eye steak to follow cooked to perfection followed by the biggest cheese board i have ever faced. The staff the food and the ambience made for as the title suggests a fantastic night . If your inIlfracombe try Wards you will not be disappointed .

We recieved a Warm friendly welcome with good bistro food at a reasonable price. Can recommend the ribeye steak which was cooked exactly to my liking. Coice of chips, new potatoes or Boulanger potatoes and I chose the new potatoes which were delicious selection of vegetables was very good and came with the meal.Would recommend.

We were in Ilfracombe to visit Lundy Island and came across this restaurant from the reviews on TripAdvisor. We were a table of 6, booked in for roast on Father's Day. We were very pleased and thoroughly enjoyed the roast dinner. The vegetables were very fresh, and the meat nice and moist.The service was friendly and made us feel at home. We would visit again if in the area.

We were really lucky to get a table here as booked the previous week, we wanted a special place to celebrate our honeymoon and this was it. From the moment we walked in we felt valued customers as the staff were very attentive to our needs. The food was excellent with a great piece of seabass and lovely prepared seasonal veg. After doing research I found this bistro and managed to book a table for one of our 2 night stays. It was the highlight of our visit. We were greeted with a friendly welcome and had a lovely table. The menu was small, but less is more as they say. Choice was ample and we chose the lamb which was amazing as well as the potatoes and vegetables. We were full but couldn’t resist a dessert too and were so glad we did. A lovely place which was deceiving from the outside. Appears to be a locals favourite so book ahead. What a lovely restaurant with great food. Nothing was too much of a problem and all patrons in the restaurant were pleasant and chatty especially the owners who went out of their way to make you feel really welcome. A must when visiting Ilfracombe.

My cousin, wife and I have just eaten at Wards for our final night in Ilfracombe. It certainly didn’t disappoint. The staff and owners Sharon (hostess) and husband John (chef) were friendly and very attentive. I had fish cake and sea bass which was cooked to perfection followed by blueberry crumble. Not overpriced and very enjoyable. In these strange times this restaurant deserves all the credits. Many thanks and if I return to Ilfracombe Wards will certainly be on my list of restaurants.

Wow! So glad we found this location for a Sunday dinner - booked via email and had a very speedy response. The restaurant itself is tiny, but has a lot of character and the owners are absolutely wonderful and made us feel welcomed as soon as we arrived. The food was fantastic. Portions were just right and loved the sharing platters so you can tuck in to whatever you want! Brilliant prices, food and staff - what more could you ask for?

We read the reviews before we went & they were accurate, the ‘restaurant’ was tiny, their lounge? I asked for a garlic bread which was no longer on the menu but they made one for me, it was a baguette £6!! I couldn’t taste any garlic it had a sweet taste instead. I had venison, lovely with a great sauce, my partner had belly pork. I was shocked to see the chef come out in his apron & use the toilet, where I work whites have to be removed before using the bathroom. We both needed the loo a lot more the following day but that could be put down to the rich sauce. Felt it was a bit overpriced, sorry but wouldn’t recommend it

There is no atmosphere in this restaurant, it is too bright, there are no candles, or flowers on the table. The service was ok, but too much talking. The food was average, I had the lamb, sadly it was so salty and so was my hubby's. Chef lay off the SALT !!

We were made to feel very welcome when we stopped for a drink in the sun one afternoon. COVID precautions were being followed, staff chatty and very accommodating. Great selection of drinks. We will definitely return. Thanks guys!

We dined at Wards during our weeks stay in Ilfracombe and were very glad we did. It was our best meal out. We had the whitebait and seabass and a yummy dessert. All three courses well excellent, delicious and well cooked. The service too was efficient and friendly. It was good we booked in advance as people were constantly being turned away.

It’s a hard one. The menu is limited. The food we had was well cooked. But not amazing. I thought it was very expensive for what it was. I had sea bass - I could have cooked it as well at home and it would have cost sub £10 with a nicer selection of sides and a sauce. It cost £18 here without any options. We both thought (visiting from London - overpriced city) that the food was overpriced. But it was well cooked.

We dined at Wards during a recent trip to Ilfracombe and are so pleased we booked well in advance so as not to miss a great dining experience. From the minute we arrived, Sharon was welcoming and attended to our every need. Drinking in the atmosphere, it was clear she and her husband are well respected locally and providing excellent, freshly cooked food is something they take pride in. So many restaurants have staff the go through the motions serving you, but dining at Wards was an experience we thoroughly enjoyed and it's great to support local family run business.

We had booked somewhere else, but we were so glad it didn’t work out..... we stumbled on wards hoping they would squeeze us in as they were fully booked. And they did!! I had gammon which was absolutely beautiful and my friend had beef...... came on separate platter and vegetables separate too. We then had desert which was well worth it! We didn’t eat again that day. A little pricey but if you want family food and the highest quality get booked in!!

We were lucky to have booked as it was very busy but able to accommodate during this odd time, a good local menu was on offer all food served with a smile, great service and felt at ease in the restaurant. You need to book to avoid disappointment.

We booked Wards weeks ago when planning a mini-break in Ilfracombe and are glad we did. It’s a small little restaurant with an outside area for drinks. The interior is decorated with great local artworks.The restaurant was busy but not too crowded as the tables were set apart as part of COVID rules. Sharon runs the restaurant very efficiently with her chef husband in the kitchen. The young waitresses seemed a bit swamped at times (it was the first day for one) but Sharon would soon get things back to efficient running - she’s a human dynamo and adds to the atmosphere and dining experience.The food: can be summed up as excellent, in particular the sea bass. It’s well-cooked, beautifully presented and there are plenty of choices on the menu to satisfy all tastes.Best of luck trying to get a table as they’re booked up for the foreseeable future.

Called to book a table a few days before travel but the restaurant was fully booked. However, Sharon, I presume owner, kindly offered to call if there was a cancellation. True to her word, Sharon called and we’re so pleased she did!Thai fish cakes to start were homemade and Devine. We both had steak and it’s rare to find a chef that can cook it to perfection but the steak was perfect. Along with the steak there were perfectly cooked vegetables which included carrots, red cabbage, French beans and ratatouille. We ordered the photos which are cooked in white wine, garlic and stock; my word they were to die for! Service was wonderful, the venue is all COVID safe. I booked the restaurant for a last night dinner at the end of a 3 day break in the area for myself and my girlfriend. Due to unforeseen circumstances ( the weather) we arrived at 19:00 for a 19:30 table. We were made to feel very welcome and shown to our table and told we could have a drink but people who had booked earlier would need there orders taken first. I had no issues with this... The owner and waitress were very attentive. The food when it did arrive was 1st class. It was well cooked and presented and very tasty. The evening was finished off talking to he owner about cocktails and sampling a couple. The whole evening was 01/10 and would recommend it to anyone in the area. Booking required and please turn up as she was telling us people book and then no show

We were greeted by Sharon in her mask and shown to are table for 3 ,Whilst maintaining social distancing at all times, we used the antibacterial hand wash, on arrival ,Sharon fully explained the covid secure rules before she took our drinks order, after a very brief interlude she returned and took our order.She made us feel secure , As our guest had been shielding since the start of lockdown this was very reassuring ,Then John(THE CHEF) went to work he produced Roast beef well done that was presented on silver planters with gravy , plus vegetables and Yorkshire puddings , that was perfect ,and Sharon had said don't be shy if you want anything please ask ,my wife did ,she wanted another Yorkshire and more beef ,which Sharon delivered along with 2 more roast potatoes and gravy.I helped her out to finish off the extras .Amaziing.Choose from three different meats, served with all the trimmings.Adult - £12 Child - £6

What a lovely atmosphere, sitting outside watching the world go by. Sharon created my own cocktail based on all my favourite things. My friend tasted her homemade sangria, fabulous. We had booked for Sunday lunch but ended up making a day of it. If you are looking for reasonably priced home cooked food then this is the place. No skimping on the portions either. The meat just melted in our mouths and a lovely selection of vegetables to accompany a very pleasant afternoon. Thank you.

How fortunate to manage to get a late booking with these lovely people. In a nutshell our whole experience from arrival to departure was first class. The food was excellent in every way, cooked to perfection (sometimes difficult for my wife who 'prefers' WD steaks, a chefs nightmare) and the Sea Bass, fresh and like eating silky butter. The atmosphere albeit with the unfortunate fewer numbers in these difficult times was perfect for us. The quicker these guys can get back to 'normal' the better, they deserve it. Me and my new husband stumbled on this lovely restaurant, friendly staff, who welcomed our dogs, we were blessed with sunny weather so dined outside. Ordered the mixed Sunday roast, was so delicious, fab venue, and noticed the locals dined there so always a good sign.

Sharon and John run this lovely restaurant, where you can simply enjoy coffee and a drink outside on the terrace (which we did on our first visit) or you can have a wonderful meal (which we had on our 2nd visit). John is the excellent chef, and my duck was cooked to perfection as was Kevin's delicious steak. The table is yours for the evening, so no need to rush, which was great, and meant that we could relax and enjoy our food and drinks. Once the kitchen had closed for the night it was great fun drinking and chatting with both Sharon and John. If you're looking for excellent quality food and a relaxed atmosphere, with friendly owners looking after your every need, then this is the place for you. Went here for a meal and wasnt disappointed, the lady was lovely who took our orders very chatty and friendly ,I believe it's a family business and her husband cooked the meals, the steaks were very tender and tasty, if we are down ilfracombe again we will eat here definitely

We visited Wards on our final night in Ilfracombe, and what a way to end our holiday! Luckily we had booked in early in the day, as the small 6 table restaurant (not including outside as it was raining on this particular day!) was full. The menu had a great choice and it was hard to decide, but my partner chose the chicken in Parma ham, and I had the catch of the day sea bass. Both came with plentiful sides and choice of potatoes. We also had starters which were delicious too. Unfortunately we did not have room for dessert but I’m sure they would also have been amazing. Wish we could go back to try more things on the menu!Great service and lovely friendly atmosphere as if you were eating with friends.

We have visited John & Sharon on many occasions now. An excellent Sunday lunch in lovely surroundings. Nothing is too much trouble for these wonderful hosts.Plenty of well cooked food bought to the table on silver platters,this restaurant is right up there with the best ! John is a brilliant chef & Sharon is awesome & friendly front of house ! Never disappointed here. Try it soon !

We visited this restaurant last night. It has a lovely feel to it, the owner was very friendly. Really really nice food and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend.

We had a very long drive from Cambridge to Ilfracombe and so were looking for a meal for 4 quite late (8:30pm). Several places turned us away but not Wards. We were made very welcome.
