Wakame in Cheltenham

We dropped by here today for the first time. Lovely little place. Fresh cooked food, quick service and delicious food 😋

Can't fault this restaurant. Friendly service, superb food and great value: delicious dinner for two with drinks for under £30.

First the food, best laksa I've had in the UK since leaving Australia 20 years ago!! Really delicious Black bean beef and noodles too. Not sure how the person below could possibly give 2 stars think they're unused to proper hawkers style food! Got an Essential sushi box to take away which was really fresh and tasty. Service was casual and friendly. We will definitely be going here again!!

It was very quiet when I went in, I thought that would be a good thing… Absolutely hands down the worst sashimi salad and ramen soup i have ever had. If you like bland tasting warm food/soup and enjoy your sashimi to TASTE ANDD SMELL like strong FISH? Go for it. Otherwise, I would NOT under any circumstance recommend this to anyone that loves white asian cuisine because THIS hole in the wall did not do the dishes I ordered to justice. None of the fish or vegetables were fresh and the broth tastes like a**. I of course paid for my meal and kindly let the manager know I did not enjoy the meal and do no want to take it away with me when he asked. (YES, that’s how much of the food I left behind because it was awful). You must be accustomed to eating frozen food on the daily to choose to eat here again. When I left I made eye contacted with the “chef” who quickly looked away, which I found strange, part of me thinks they purposely gave me a poorly constructed meal to deter me from coming again. They have succeeded, I’ll be telling everybody and their mother not to even waste their BREATH, respectfully. Anyway, go to bar and wok instead!! Or if bar and wok is closed, just get yourself down to the all you can eat Chinese restaurant down the road!! PS NEVER go to a noodle bar / restaurant that is NEVER busy and always quiet

I have been going to wakame with my family for over 4 years and the food has never disappointed. Fresh food and excellent service. All the staff and chefs are very friendly and the food is excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant! The Katsu curry is also a lot better than Wagamama. Big portions too.

We visit Wakame on a regular basis and it never fails to disappoint us. The sushi is excellent and a great price compared to other places in town. Don't let the cafe type feel put you off, the food more than makes up for it

Dined in and had takeaway from wakame several times and it's been very nice. Value for money is superb and the tastes of the dishes; fave being Katsu curry and Malaysian, are just really enjoyable. I would personally like the plain noodles to have some veg like beansprouts in them but otherwise can't complain :)

Not only the best Japanese restaurant in the area but in my opinion, one of the best restaurant in the area. Current personal circumstances and a passion for food allowed us to discover restaurants in and around Cheltenham. There are a lot of fantastic places, but most of the time, they come with a huge price tag. The beauty of Wakame is that you get amazing food, great service and a drink without breaking the bank. Their egg fried rice is absolutely delicious( I'm obsessed 🍚🤤), sashimi fresh, and their miso paste homemade. When dining at Wakame you genuinely feel like home. The place is warm, clean and comfy. People are so friendly and accommodating. We love coming back there and are looking forward to the next visit. Thank you Wakame, it's been a pleasure 🙏

Very tasty food with reasonable price. Friendly and great service too. I ordered tempura udon and it came with 3 x prawn tempuras and 3 x pieces maki on the side for £11, great value. Enjoyed roast duck with rice for takeaway too. Highly recommended for quick lunch.

This restaurant is a must, amazing Asian food, great service at a budget price.

My starter and main course were chicken apparently but if they were then I don't know what part of the bird were used! My Malaysian curry was just a soup with some dubious meat floating around. Disappointing 😞

So tasty, great value - their beef with peppers in back bean sauce with egg fried rice washed down with green tea has been a food highlight of my year - would definitely recommend

I ordered the teriyaki salmon, it was suppose to come with rice, Chinese greens (it was just pak choi), and spring onions (there were no spring onions). This was £12 and 90% was rice so far too expensive for mainly rice and mediocre in flavour. I also ordered the salt and pepper squid, they gave me 6 very small pieces and it cost £5…. What a rip off! The flavour of the squid wasn’t that nice either, tasted like it was off or frozen and very chewy. Won’t be returning.

This place is GREAT. I have never dined in and only had takeaways, but their sushi is tremendous. Yes, Kibou is the posh, expensive, "go to" restaurant and their sushi is better, granted, but it's just TOO expensive. Wakame have it spot on. The price is slightly lower and the sushi is of marginally less quality than Kibou. They also have some great choices, which some places don't have, such as Ikura and soft shell crab. If you're looking for good quality sushi and don't want to take a mortgage out to have it, COME HERE - you won't be disappointed!

So first off - we aren't the wealthiest of families so eating out is a rare treat - but Wakame is a rarer treat still! Lets start with the churlish part; what will it cost? Well lets say youre really craving eastern cuisine so you pop down the high street - you have a start, a main and drink - you're looking about £20, probably more if you're choosing the pricier options on the menu. But why spend £20 here when the chippy or McDonald's costs less? Lets move on to the point of spending our hard earned money - the VALUE for the money. Wakame has great service, the staff are friendly and polite, a much greater food selection (lots of options on that menu!) and - greatest of all - you will leave with a full stomach even though its not an 'all you can eat' buffet! My family of 3 ate for less than £50 (that includes a 10% tip from me as thanks) and all left with full stomachs after buying 2 soft drinks, some hot sake, a 14pc Veg Sushi, 2 mains and a side of egg fried rice. So damn tasty - I keep meaning to try different things when I visit, but... Ha, ha! Maybe next time!

Delicious and authentic Japanese and Asian food. Best in Cheltenham for authentic Asian. Not like the over priced Montpelier offerings but family friendly and delicious

Wow what a find! I love this place! Sure to be back very soon and bringing more people! I had the dragon rolls as suggested when I asked “what do you recommend” wow, beautifully presented, so fresh! Perfect. I had chicken teriyaki with rice & Chinese greens, my daughter had the king prawn fried rice, she was thrilled it had lots of prawns and tasted delicious, our friend had the chicken chow mein which I quote “best chicken chow mein” We are sure to be back, Only minused 1 star for atmosphere as some music would of been nice, but that doesn’t matter as the food sings enough (wow that’s cheesy….)

The food here is excellent. Cooked fresh in an open kitchen you can see your dish come together. Large and varied menu so you'll be sure to find something to try! Big portions and fairly priced make this a place definitely worth visiting.

What a place !!! Unpretentious, fantastic food, cooked in the open kitchen, great service and really good value for money. Quite happy to make this my go to restaurant as the menu is varied but fresh. Jewel in the crown.

Absolutely nice food. Great experienced dine in, love the curry laksa which the broth so much delicious while my sister love the sushi very much. Recommend the yam taro cake, crispy Peking duck roll and chicken satay skewer which is not in the menu. The owner said new menu is coming soon.

Every time we have turned up in a larger group we have been greeted with friendliness, amazing food and all round incredible hospitality. Lovely little restaurant hidden away in Cheltenham with great prices. Will happily return!

Had the most delicious, freshly prepared Japanese food. The spicy wings were the best we've ever tasted, the duck donburi was packed with meat and tasty fried rice, the salt n pepper squid, dragon rolls & tempura prawns all arrived in quick succession- all perfectly cooked. Our full meal and drinks came to just £40! Excellent value & gorgeous- much better than Wagamama and easily comparable to Kibou except this is a more stripped back authentic street food setting. We will be returning!

EASILY the best noodle bar in cheltenham. quick service, lovely staff, PHENOMENAL pork and miso ramen. i’ve eaten both inside and delivery, fantastic every time. cannot recommend enough

Absolutely beautifully cooked food, it was such a high standard. I'm really fussy so for me was an absolute delight, the female waiter who served us was absolutely great as were the other staff. Honestly, compared to Manchester they probably don't quite charge enough. Thanks all it was a very good experience.

Not just the best Asian food in Cheltenham, but the best food in Cheltenham. Also the best service in Cheltenham, run by people who actually seem happy to serve you. Loads of great veggie options, all cooked in the open kitchen while you wait. I have never had a bad meal here.

Paid 35 quid for the worst food I’ve ever eaten in my life (and I’m from Blackpool). Terrible. Would not recommend. Terrible. Ew.

I've has Wakame before so wanted to treat myself to a delivery. It took about two hours but that's fine. Weirdly, some of my noodles were pink which I've never seen before. I picked around those and kept eating but then found a hair in the food. All in all pretty disappointing.

Returned to form! After a bit of a wobble during the pandemic, the quality is back to excellent and the restaurant is now open again. One of the best Asian restaurants in Cheltenham.

Ordered a take away Pad Thai and it was awful. No peanuts no flavour. Was a chicken pad Thai full of tofu and very little chicken. Better to buy a ready meal at A supermarket.

Ordered here last night. Very average. Ramen were congealed and broth lacked depth and flavour. Tempura was greasy and bland. Wouldn't bother again. Arrived on time though!

Such a disappointment! My partner and I ordered a £16 sushi box via Deliveroo to share and it was absolutely tiny! Really bad value for money and it didn’t even taste that fresh or good quality. Will definitely be avoiding in future.

We normally use Wakame with no issue. However this evening we ordered and decided to get something different. We ordered the crab salad, which states it's made with snow crab, it is not. It arrived with shredded "crab" sticks in top. I called to ask if there had been a mistake and the person in the end of the phone was incredibly rude. They said that they checked with the chef and they use snow crab meat sticks. These do not exist, crab sticks are made with surimi which is a white fish and them flavoured. He then said ok well I'll make the owner take it off the menu, who else can I help you. Really made me question if we will use them again.

Been a customer for years but our last 2 orders were just badly made. The food does not taste like Asian food anymore…the rice is just tasteless and the noodles are as bad. Increased price and provided tasteless food. Revert back to your normal

Disappointed last time we ordered the rice was forgotten, ok this time they honoured a couple of free starters due to that but this time they forgot the sauces. Simple things if you can’t get the order correct! Plus the food to be honest wasn’t...

Lately the sushi and maki are not as good as they used to be, they add way too much rice and not enough fish in the portion for a balanced taste. Sashimi is no longer on the menu. The spring rolls have been soft and chewy. Home delivery takes around 1 hour.

We visited this place last year for their yaki udon. It was so tasty back then. We tried it again this year for our second visit. They maintain the quality and taste of the food consistently. Well done! The price hasn't increased too. I think this is one of the best East/ Southeast Asian takeaways available in Cheltenham.

Food is always very good but our latest order took over 2 hours to arrive and whenever I called up to get an update they hung up on me for being impatient. Good sushi, poor customer service.

Ordered here instead of kibou as they weren't running same day pickup.... Totally misled by the mostly good reviews... This isn't how Japanese food is supposed to be. Flavourless and sad. Maybe a different chef was on cos of covid situ but na. The price markup for the tofu salad must have been about 80 percent. The ingredients were just undressed bag salad with weird slithers of 1mm thick fried cardboard.

Had some tofu skin sushi from here. Asked them to make it without mayo and they were happy to do so. Really fresh and tasty. Would return!

Terrible. Made an order online but needed to amend it. They would not pick up their phone. The online chat was useless and would not respond by email.

We have been ordering from here for 6 years now consistently. It is one of the best restaurants in Cheltenham for value and flavour. Eating in is a great experience but they have transitioned well to takeaway only during covid - appreciate comments about plastic...

Classic sushi platter brilliant as always

Wakame is my favourite Japanese place in Cheltenham, probably even my favourite takeaway. Their chicken katsu curry is my go-to feel-better food, with lovely chunks of carrot in the sauce and very generous portions. Their sushi is quality too, and the whole menu is great value for money. Minimal wait time, delicious food, cosy restaurant setting.

Great food, fresh and tasty but service has gone down hill. Will advise you 15mins but when you collect, additional 20 mins is always added on.

I love this place. It's a fairly casual and authentic little place but the food is consistently good. The sushi here is as good, if not better (certainly better value for money) than the higher end sushi restaurants in town (not to take away from...

This review is based on the delivery from Just Eat, I haven't been into the actual restaurant. I seen the good reviews and was looking forward to the food. However I was left somewhat disappointed. The seafood ramen was very disappointing, it was just processed food like seafood sticks. The gyoza were nothing special compared to a couple of other local sushi restaurants. The fried rice wasn't really fried, it was more like boiled rice. The pak choi was very nice but that was about it. At some point in the future I will try and restaurant and hopefully I will have a better experience

I have just wasted £16 on the most awful takeaway meal I've ever had! Dry, old, warmed-up leather-like duck. Tasteless, non-descript tempura prawns and veg. There was a separate sauce. Not sure if it was for the duck or the tempura. I am absolutely disgusted...

Ordered Dragon Roll Sushi, Tori Gyoza, Curry Laksa and Malaysian Chicken Curry and it was all amazing. Tasted very fresh, delivered much quicker than the estimated delivery time on Just Eat and delivery driver was very conscious of Covid restrictions. Would highly recommend

The food has never failed to impress. Laid back atmosphere when eating inside and quick service. The takeaway service is also quick and the great thing is that the food is exactly the same as if you would have eaten it sitting in. The rice dishes are all great portions and the sushi is really delicious.

Had takeaway from here last week. The food was delicious, we really enjoyed all of it, however we were really disappointed with the quantity of plastic packaging. Many plastic boxes and several plastic bags. For this reason we won't be ordering again. Please consider paper...

THIS IS THE BEST SUSHI IN CHELTENHAM. I've lived in New Orleans, Seattle, Baltimore, and now the UK. Not an expert on food, or on sushi. But I like it, and I get it wherever I can. I've eaten at Kibou; the presentation and ingredients are fancier. But if you want really nice, fresh fish - at a lower price - this is better. You're welcome.

It may not look too inviting from the outside but this place is insane! Excellent food, huge selection, chill atmosphere and great for vegetarians and vegans. Beats Yo Sushi! any day.

Just about the best curry laksa I have had outside of Singapore. A delicious bowl of steamy, spicy, comforting noodles.

After movie supper and it was welcoming, quick and utterly delicious. Amazing value too. Simple decor and no frills but great honest food.

I had the chicken chow mein which was very oily. I also had the ebi prawn which tasted a bit old. Shame as I had heard good things about this place. I might try again but not their fried dishes.

Najlepšie nudle aké som kedy jedol. Trochu ma mrzí že som nevyskúšal horúce sake. Mám ho veľmi rád a určite je výborné. Dal som si pivko ktoré mi pripomenulo Slovensko, takže aj tak super. Vrelo odporúčam navštíviť keď pôjdete okolo určite vás niečo osloví.

I am perhaps a little reluctant to leave a revue of Wakame for fear that it will become over popular! It is indeed a hidden gem. Having become somewhat bored with Yo Sushi (good in a limited way) we found this place just a minutes...
