My friend booked us a table for lunch yesterday to celebrate a personal success. We were both dropped off outside the pub (so that we could both have a drink!) only to find the door locked and the whole pub looking pretty dark inside. We called both numbers shown in the window but neither of them answered and a message was left but has not yet been replied to. We were looking forward to having lunch here, especially after lockdown, but unfortunately ended up having to go elsewhere (which luckily ended up being delicious!).I understand that emergencies can happen but as a business please let your customers know if bookings need to be cancelled so that they’re not left waiting around outside the front door.

I am a local resident of the Wilton area and I view the Vivary arms as an extremely important part of our community, the Vivary has always been a warm welcoming place with excellent food, drink and service! Although it has changed hands quite recently the quality of the experience at this cosy local pub has improved if anything! I would like to respond to the recent review concerning the Sunday roast, I have eaten many Sunday roasts at the Vivary and last Sunday I have to say was the best I’ve ever had! No complaints at all about the food, it was beautifully cooked, hot and extremely tasty just what you want on these cold winter days. In regards to the complains about the prices... well you’d struggle to find such a charming atmosphere anywhere else in Taunton for a cheaper price, that’s just the reality of it I’m afraid ! As a neighbour of the Vivary I’ve noticed it’s been extremely busy these past few weeks which I am delighted to see. I do not think it is fair to put the lovely new landlord and lady’s business in jeopardy because of a unreasonable disliking of a few roast potatoes! I have attached some pictures with this review just to demonstrate how lovely the Christmas decorations that have been put up this December are, creating a festive, atmosphere that couldn’t be recreated anywhere else in the local area! Would highly recommend paying a visit to the Vivary weather it be for food or drinks as you won’t be disappointed !

This used to be the most amazing pub when the previous owners had it. You had to book weeks in advance to get a table. However since it changed hands it’s been a shadow of its former self. We had been just after it changed hands, and had a bad experience, but we wanted to try again to see if it had improved. Sadly it hasn’t. The two of us booked for a Sunday lunch. I rang in the day before to check what was available and they said either roast beef or roast lamb, which sounded fine. When we go there that was ALL on the menu board - just roast beef or roast lamb! No other option at all was mentioned, so forget it if you are vegetarian. We went to the lounge restaurant part. It was a chilly day and was chilly in there. The fire - such a feature of the Vivary - wasn’t lit or even properly cleaned. On the bar was the sole Christmas decoration - a small ‘table top’ bauble tree. I ordered a glass of tap water with a slice of lemon, plus a large glass of Merlot. That was the first issue. They only had Shiraz - nothing else at all - and that was their last bar one glass of red wine too. A pub with NO red wine - unbelievable. When questioned they said they had had a busy Saturday and their delivery wasn’t until Monday - but surely it wouldn’t be beyond the wit of the owners to nip down to Tesco or Lidl (both just round the corner) and buy a few bottles to tide themselves over? The wine there wasn’t cheap either - my 250 ml glass of red wine cost me £5.50. We were shown our table - cramped table for two in a corner, despite the rest of the tables all being empty bar one. Ordering took ages - in the end I went to the bar to order our two roast beef. When it finally came it was ok, but it wasn’t great. The potatoes were clearly reheated and were black on the top but an unappetising white in the middle. No one came to ask how the meal was, so it wasn’t until the end that I was able to point out my uneaten potatoes. The response was ‘we will raise it with the chef’. The staff were ok but their long hair wasn’t tied back as it should have been as per food regulations. We then asked for the dessert board - the price was £5 for a basic dessert which was outrageous . I also asked for another glass of red wine to be told I had drunk it all and nothing was left. We decided to leave. The meal itself had cost us £9.95 each, plus the wine - and when I went to pay the bill there was no discount for the appalling potatoes. I paid the full price of £25.40 for the two roast dinners and a glass of red wine. The receipt wasn’t itemised and I had to request a second itemised one. I also queried about my comments to the chef. They chased this up and came back with the response ‘the chef appreciates your comments!. We could quite see why the Vivary was empty that lunchtime, despite all the other local places being pretty full. There were only the three table occupied during our visit, with one chance visitor coming in as we were leaving, it’s as if the owners are playing at hospitality, and not taking it seriously. We won’t be going back. We decanted up to the Shepherds Rest in Galmington, where I had a wonderful dessert for £3.95 and a large Merlot for £5. It was cheaper, with far better service and ambience - and all their Christmas decorations were up. It was also warm. I wish we had gone there in the first place! Well done Shepherds, for showing how it should be done.

This is a very old quirky place with lots of little nooks and crannies. It is a heavily listed building and for sure the entrance is a bit unusual but not in a bad way. You do tend to be greeted by some locals sat there but very friendly and welcoming. Then you squeeze through to a delightful little bar full of old memorabilia. Fantastic food either in the bar or the separate, again quirky, restaurant and very friendly staff. Recommend this lovely little old place wholeheartedly.

Popped into the Vivary the other day to see if anything had changed with the new ownership but, sadly, this lovely old Taunton pub will never be a success again until the owners do something about the 4 or 5 miserable old codgers who resolutely block the only access to the bar area. No doubt they feel they have every right to do so - it is 'their pub' after all - but intentionally resisting every customer who tries to edge and inch and apologise past them is a sure recipe for the commercial disaster the pub has become over the last few years.I live locally and am surprised at the sheer number of other locals who, completely unprompted but quite vituperatively, quote these bar blockers as the main reason for no longer using The Vivary. Simple solution: Cut a one metre opening in the fake partition immediately to the right as you come in through the front door and move the table in front of it down to block off the existing bar entrance. A simple afternoon's work would allow the old codgers to retain their own private bemoaning area whilst allowing the rest of us to actually get in and out.I make no charge for this piece of revolutionary architectural advice but trust I may get my reward from seeing The Vivary regain it's stature as one of Taunton's little gems.

This was one of our favourite watering holes. We left it for about 6 months after the new proprieters took over before going again to give them a chance to settle in. The inside hasn't changed much during the period, but it has lost its friendly feeling. It used to feel like cosy country pub, even if we were the only customers. However, it now feels more like a canteen. We had no complaints about the food, except that the food, especially the roast potatoes, got cold before we;d finished eating. We may try it, again, during the week, but it's very doubtful we'll return for a Sunday roast.

Under new management, the recent management/ownership changes to this pub and their menu are second to none, outstanding if you might say. The introduction of a 'Light Lunch' alongside many new main dishes are brilliant, and my large party were all shocked at the improvement from our last visit, making the outing not only affordable but delicious. It was noted the care that had been taken to prepare each dish, from scratch, which was evident from the taste of the food.

Found this pub on the gourmet society app as we needed somewhere close to the station to eat and being visitors had no idea where to start. I rang at short notice en route to book (as per terms & conditions of the card and luckily as it was early they had a table for 6. (note only 1 card per 2 diners) The staff were so friendly and the food was a delight. Between us we had the garlic mushrooms served with a hot crusty roll & camembert for starters and Scampi, Pie, Seafood pancakes and the duck for mains, all of which were delicious. The desserts were also lovely and they do a small or large serving, needless to say we could only manage the small as the mains were very generous. All in all a lovely meal that we would happily pay full price for if we didn't have the Gourmet card. Our only regret was that we couldn't visit again as planned, whilst in the area.

We took our son and daughter-in-law for a mid-week lunch and were pleasantly surprised to be offered light lunches, much more suitable for older people. The smaller portion of fish and chips was equally as good as the full portion; in fact better as I cleared my plate. Our son's curry was served with separate side dishes of chutney and banana; the others chose cod, salmon and prawn mornay and said it tasted as good as it looked. A small portion of fruit pavlova and a large slice of walnut and treacle tart completed the meal. All were satisfied and look forward to eating here, again.

A brief stop whilst en route out into Taunton, and this served as the perfect stop. A tight squeeze inside but a great vibe with friendly locals. Serves food too which smelt great - I'm tempted to return for the evening.

I love this pub! So quaint with that old world charm. We frequent the Vivary Arms every trip back to visit family. Great food, great booze. A bit more practice on the vodka, lemon lime bitters but who's complaining! Cosy, inviting and bloody ripper mate!

A group of friends had lunch here. The specials board for lunch is £6. Quite a few had the fish and chips - the fish looked lovely - very big. A couple of people went for the Cod,Salmon & Prawn Mornay, which looked nice too. I had a grilled chicken breast which unfortunately was quite dry, I didn't realise I had to order gravy seperately, so I had a bit of a wait for it to come out!!!! My dish came with carrots, new potatoes and broccoli. The desserts looked delicious which were £3 for small or £4.95 for large portions. This pub is at the back of the old Taunton Police Station - just up the road a bit.

I have now been to The Vivary Arms on three separate occasions I have had Sunday lunch and two lunchtime meals The range of the Menu is more than suitable for any age of people from 5 to 105!!!. They offer a great choice in the actual menu but also have a lovely selection of specials, the one thing when visiting at lunchtime was the "light lunches" which were very nice. The staff both during the week and at the weekend were all professional, polite and also knowledgeable about the menu which is lovely and makes it an all round better experience for the customer. It's a place I have already recommended to friends and somewhere I will definitely be visiting in the future.Keep up he great work.

We picked this pub after reading reviews on another website as well as this one,---we were well impressed. My partner Suzanne is coeliac, ---we enquired, and all the staff were tremendously helpful. The chef made a real effort to produce a really tastey meal for Suzanne.---My food also was first class.A good selection of decent beer too--[ Otter ]

We live locally so have evening meal there with friends every few weeks. We have never been disappointed. Five of us had different main courses a couple of evenings ago and we were all delighted. Full compliments to the chef! This is a very old pub with a delightful atmosphere helped by the friendliness of all concerned. We hope to return soon and have no hesitation in recommending it to all.

Ate here with friends for a quick lunch. Really good choice of light lunches and they now do a 'small' pudding so you can justify a quick indulgence! Great service as always.

Convivial company, friendly staff and the best summer display of hanging flowers in Taunton make this a good pub choice. Food is also good but best of all - it's just round the corner from where we practise on a Tuesday night!

Went here a for a family birthday/Sunday lunch. Friendly staff. Enjoyed a very tasty Sunday lunch, only moan is that we only had 3 small roast potatoes each which I thought was rather stingy.

Great selection of lunch dishes. Was able to cater for a family party of 7 with a couple of allergies with no issues. Good local beers which were well kept. Would recommend the food and drink and overall price

Very quiet atmosphere. Very respectful. Beautiful old building just makes you want to explore. Food arrives in a dumb waiter so cool.

Came here last weekend there was a large group of us here for a stag do we were on a pub crawl but ended up staying until the end it was such a great night they had karaoke and the atmosphere was brilliant along with the staff and the landlady who made us feel extremely welcome and gave our stag a free shot the drink prices were great and cheaper than we expected The pub itself is huge and they have some great sound and lighting the building is old and it reminds me so much of an old school boozer with retro carpet to match and after seeing the previous review we never experienced any of that the pints were cold and fresh and as u said before extremely cheap considering other places we had been to that day the place didn’t smell apart from slight damp in the men’s from a leak and a missing door but there was another toilet so it didn’t matter so much but toilets bar and seating area was clean Must apologise I did actually drop a drink on your carpet but failed to tell you I hope that doesn’t stop us coming in again it was a brilliant night we even missed our train as we had such a good time but the landlady recommended a nearby hotel for us so thank you once again to everyone 5* all round and we will be back for our Christmas do :)

Long train journey to Taunton today. Thought I'd pop in for a pint. Wanting a real ale I was given a cask ale. Absolutely perfect. From a local brewery too. Barman was happy to chat and answer questions about the pub etc. Will be back next Sunday.
