Villa Positano in South Lakeland

We last came here about 15 years ago and haven't been to Bowness since. It was a very pleasant surprise to find the restaurant as good as ever with good food and great service. Be warned though - it does get busy so you will need to book. On the evening we were there (a Thursday in September) the restaurant was full and a least 30 people were turned away. The best time to ring to book is in the early evening and it sometimes takes a while to get through but be patient, it is worth it! Thanks to everyone at El Positano for a lovely evening.

The best Italian food I’ve ever had outside of Italy. The agnolotti and the homemade tiramisu are not to be missed! The family that run the restaurant are so lovely, friendly and attentive. We will definitely return when we’re in the area again.

We were struggling to find anywhere to eat while staying at Windermere everywhere booked up. We found this place that kindly found a table for us. What a great find, family run traditional Italian run restaurant. Fab Italian good, good wine and great service. It was so good we have booked again for Thursday night. Highly recommend

We walked in on a busy evening after an issue with a booking elsewhere and were lucky to get a table.The staff were really friendly -especially when we left late and they were enjoying a well deserved evening meal together.The food was stunning, not your basic Italian by a long shot! We will certainly be returning next time we are in the area!Also the best pudding ever recommend by the lovely lady that served us! We ate the rest of the food too quickly before thinking to take a photo as it was so nice!

Fantastic Italian restaurant. Really cute and authentic inside.The pasta dishes are very tasty, we had a dish off the special board and one on the main menu and they were both excellent. The garlic pizza bread with tomato was good starter and the tomato and basil salad went well with the pasta.The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend.

This place is amazing, from the moment you walked in you felt you was in Italy The menu had a really good choice & the specials board was good also, The food was amazing & will definitely be going back when we are in the area again.The staff where friendly & helpful in fact it was a very pleasant evening in lovely surroundings. We found this restaurant on trip advisor but thought we would need to pre-book, however this was our only night here so chanced our luck by arriving at 6.15pm. The waiter made a negative face but very pleasingly found us a table which was lovely. This lived up to all reviews. honestly one of the nicest Italian meals we have ever had, run by true Italian family, they certainly know how to prepare delicious food. All the other diners were also impressed by the service and there was a lovely jovial atmosphere with locals also dining there. This really is a hidden gem and a class above most of the other eateries in Bowness.

When you enter Villa Positano you feel like you have actually entered Italy, the atmosphere, food, drink and Italian personalities make for an excellent evening. Highly recommended. Book in advance.

We had the loveliest meal at Villa Positano at the weekend. The food was delicious, the service fab and the environment so lovely. If you are looking for delicious and traditional italian fare you must visit Villa Positano!!!

We booked in for the first night of our holiday after eating here last year because it had been our favourite meal. It didn't disappoint again! The pizzas were very yummy, pasta cooked to perfection. Very friendly staff and a good wine list. We're going again for the last night of our holiday and we can't wait!

Excellent food and service. A great Italian food experience in Bowness.My starter of Calamari was gorgeous. My wife’s mushrooms were delicious.Our mains of Salmon Tagliatelle and Chicken Marengo were exquisite. The wine list was great value and quality. Tiramisu Desert was the best ever.Staff were so nice. Very attentive and covid aware. The music and ambience were very authentic and there was plenty of space and fresh air. Definitely one of the highlight of our dining experience this week so far.

Words cannot describe the food at this restaurant. Will definitely be returning again and again. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly with staff that interact with the customers as friends. If your looking for food which tastes out of this world this is the place. Get yourself there!

We came here for dinner one night after a recommendation from a family member. We booked a good 2/3 months in advance as this place fills up quickly and is very popular which once we visited we could see why. The food is very nice, decent price and good portion sizes! Only down side was we were waiting 30 minutes for the bill and had to ask for this 3 times. This is a very traditional Italian restaurant and would love to come back here again!!

We had a superb meal here , brushetta and whitebait, then pasta dishes, all superb.The owner was extremely nice to everyone, and gave the personal touch!Make sure to leave room for the deserts, all good !NB you have to drop in and book a couple of days ahead, no web or phone bookings.

Turned up without booking, managed to squeeze us in, and not disappointed. Good atmosphere, great food. If in the area in the future we will return. Recommend booking, as I think we were just very lucky on this occasion.

Based on the positive reviews below, I tried to book a table here for a family holiday (4 adults, 1 toddler). I phoned repeatedly on two separate occasions - never got an answer. We arrived promptly not long after they opened, quickly followed by three separate groups behind us. The restaurant looked traditional - arguably somewhat dated - and the food smelled fantastic. After a short wait at the door we were rather abruptly and rudely shunned away as they were “fully booked”.Whilst this would seem completely fair (albeit slightly irritating given that we tried to book days earlier and saw many empty tables) what really annoyed us was how the man on the door (I suspect to be the manager) warmly welcomed the larger party behind us as old friends without asking if they had a reservation, whilst the rest of us queuing all had to look elsewhere.Luckily, we found amazing pizzas at Base, who I’ll be leaving a 5* review for - well worth checking out!

Great night with friends before a wedding the following day . Staff and food were excellent. Restaurant was busy and there was a great atmosphere. This was our second visit here in 2 months . Last time it was just my husband and I .

Visited with my family to celebrate my daughters birthday. Prior to heading to Villa Positano we'd first tried a neighbouring restaurant, Hyltons, from previous reviews I thought we had no chance of getting in to Villa Positano. That was unsuccessful as as we were (very curtly! ) turned away. Hurrah for serendipity as despite not having a reservation Villa Positano accommodated us willingly ( we turned up on the dot of opening) and what a fantastic meal it was. Service excellent, staff attentive and genuine. Food amazing, best Italian I've had in ages. I had spaghetti amatriciana...delicious!! Restaurant very bijou which only enhances the experience. Highly recommend but try to book, plenty of people were unlucky night we were in...definitely deserves a second visit for me!!!

The atmosphere in this restaurant is fantastic, chilled Mediterranean dining. The restaurant itself is tucked away from the major bustle there can sometimes be on a busy day in Bowness, so it is the ideal place to come after a day on the lake to unwind over a nice glass of wine and some decent Italian food. The food itself is great, although the chilli on my pizza was quite hot! Admittedly that's a personal preference and perhaps a warning for anyone else. Overall myself and my partner had a great meal here, the staff were very pleasant and did not rush us to eat up and pay up despite being fully booked on a very busy weekend.

Its been our favourite place to eat in Bowness for years, a must eat if you like Italian. Well priced too for the area

Visited recently for dinner. The staff were very friendly and good fun, and the restaurant itself was lovely with an authentic feel and good atmosphere. Very clean too. Unfortunately the food was average, my pasta was over-cooked, mushy and very greasy, and my partner’s chicken dish was very bland and could’ve been a children’s portion, which wasn’t great for almost £14. A little disappointing and probably wouldn’t return.

Visited this authentic Italian restaurant as a family of 4 and was welcomed with a friendly greeting and shown promptly to our pre booked table. Our 2 year old granddaughter was regularly acknowledged by the staff throughout the meal, despite the restaurant being extremely busy. Now on to the food, wow, all dishes where amazing and tasted delicious! My daughter had a platter of fish for her main dish which was nicely presented and very fresh. I had the mussels to start and there was plenty of them too and very tasty. . My main dish, I opted for the pasta filled with lobster and topped with a prawn sauce and this was actually one of the best pasta dishes I have ever tasted and I’ve been to Italy several times too. The whole experience from stepping through the door of this wonderful restaurant was amazing. We wished we had booked it earlier in the week, so we had the chance to visit it again! Thank you for an enjoyable and outstanding meal and service.

Fabulous authentic experience with perfect atmosphere. Visited last night as a party of 3 and had a lovely time. Lived locally for several years and for some reason never been however that will definitely change now. Very fair prices for quality food and wine. Recommend the mixed fish grill. This place is a hidden gem. It is hard to get a booking but worth the effort. The food is outstanding as is the service. For us, the best restaurant in Bowness.

We were very disappointed to find out that this place was up for sale so this might be our last meal there. Great food, and wine and a really nice atmosphere.

Great Italian meal in Bowness. Great service and atmosphere, fantastic fresh and authentic food. All 6 of us were very impressed and will be back the next time I’m in Bowness.

Fab little restaurant, tucked away so it can be easily missed but the reviews made us visit and we were not disappointed. The menu is extensive so had some difficulties choosing in the end we settled for the spaghetti marinara and the lasagna, both were delicious. We were stuffed as the portions are quite big so we took our dessert to go and it was perfect. We will certainly be back when we visit again.

Found this restaurant by chance, after not being able to get into a couple of others due to it being busy evening time. What a delight, friendly, attentive staff and loads of choice on the menu. Visited with family whilst staying in Bowness. Had house wine, which was great a Pinot rose, great pasta and pizzas enjoyed by us all. Will definitely visit again when next in Bowness.

We visited here with our family and friends whilst staying in bowness, the food was very tasty and lots of flavour , we had some lovely wine to go with our meals the waiters were good fun and welcoming, I would highly recommend coming here if you want a good Italian

Another place where it is quite difficult to reserve a table. Rang many times, well in advance and either no reply or engaged for ever. Eventually sorted and worth persevering.Arrived on the night at 7pm and there was a sign outside to say fully booked, no tables.Our table was upstairs, nicely positioned in the corner.Very busy but as a family business you can see it matters and they work hard.Highlight was the Agnolotti Al Aragosta, delicious. They serve a good house wine by the litre or 750ml, we had both between three of us, good value too.Be back in August I think, I'll be on the phone soon enough.

Really cosy and chilled atmosphere and the service and food was excellent. Traditional Italian food and I felt like I was back in Italy. Would frequent this place often if I lived there!

We dine at Villa very regularly as we live nearby. This is a family run, traditional restaurant and we love it! We are always made welcome and are served delicious food always with a smile. There are so many regular customers who return week after week which speaks volumes of how this restaurant and it’s team are valued. Anyone who has left a negative review on here puzzles me!! Certainly in all our visits over many years we have never seen anyone be treated less than courteously!

Although very busy and "fully booked" they fitted us in without too much fuss. Good Italian food with excellent, friendly service.

We have eaten here many times in the past so returned on our recent visit we were not disappointed the staff are friendly and efficient without rushing you and the food was delicious and its great value !! we will be back !

We found Villa Positano at the end of a small alley and was attracted to the traditional decor. We shared a refreshing Agnolotti Al Aragosta pasta - filled with lobster and crab meat served with a lovely creamy tomato and prawn sauce - and a tasty Cafona pizza - which was topped with Italian broccoli, chilli and sausage. All in all it was a good experience.

Having visited this restaurant a few years ago and having a good experience we thought we would come back. However this time we where treated to a very greasy,oily pizza and my partner had quite severe food poisoning from the seafood pasta. Such a shame our first trip away in a year and it was cut short due to this.If you visit this restaurant choose your food wisely.

We have eaten here every time we go to the lake District. The food is amazing and the owner had great knowledge on wine he was very helpful. We stayed for a week and ate here 3 times and didn't have one bad meal. Would definitely recommend!

Came here 6/7 months ago and loved it! Came back after lockdown and was not disappointed, great food, served quickly, fantastic staff! Highly recommend

Me, my girlfriend, my friend and his girlfriend went for meal tonight and were extremely disappointed. We were greeted by a very rude man, who had a mask on but not covering his nose ( so utterly pointless)!! We then sat down, ordered one drink as the rude man walked off after that, only to come back 10 minutes later to take the rest of our drinks order the rest. We then order our food. 2 steaks and 2 carbonaras. I asked for my steak medium rare, it was still mooing when it came out. Served with a massive chunk of lemon on top, no seasoning and one bowl of small, mushy veg to share between my friend who also had a steak. He had asked for peppercorn sauce with his, it was SWIMMING in sauce. He also asked for it to medium rare but was pretty much raw. I had to ask for salt and pepper and extra veg which was over cooked and mushy. The carbonaras had 5 pieces of had in them and were cold. We weren’t ask if our food was ok because they were too busy talking to someone else for all of our meal, which also meant we couldn’t complain as nobody seemed interested. I’ve never had more disappointing meal and wasn’t exactly cheap as the steaks for £23 each, £2.50 for peppercorn sauce. If you want a awful meal with rude staff this is the place for you.

Table for two on 22nd Oct 2020Myself and my wife were in the village as part of her 50th celebrations. We always dine at Villa Positano as for us you simply cannot beat that authentic Italian vibe from a family run traditional restaurant and Villa Positano is just that. There is something about the walk to the door down the covered walkway that just fills out hearts with joy.I treated myself to the sirloin (just huge) with the peppercorn sauce accompanied by a bowl of roast potatoes and vegetables - perfect. My wife went with form and chose the Lasagne - again huge! We both had a large glass of house red/white with the red being very good as it goes. I must have spent what seemed an age enjoying my meal whilst chatting to my wife about our day. I think the word relaxed sums up our mood during our meal and I didn't want it to end.Great service throughout with a nice chat with the owner towards the end. With everything going on Covid wise his words of thanks for visiting his restaurant were from the heart so without doubt the next time we're in Bowness we'll be booking again!All the very best Villa Positano and thanks again for looking after us once more - you're one of the best !!!

Really authentic restaurant. Simple but wonderful food. Excellent wine. You feel like you’re in Italy. We’re already planning our next visit!

Recommended to us by our guest home and so glad that they did. Small and cosy inside and glad we booked as we wouldn't have got a table. All the staff are italian and make you feel exceptionally welcome. I had king prawns in garlic for my starter and my hubby had stuffed mushrooms. Both were beautiful. We both had Ravioli with ricotta and spinach for main course and that was beautiful too. We had tiramasu for dessert which was of course homemade. All washed down with a bottle of merlot and lemoncello to finish. Can't recommed this little restaurant enough and will visit again for sure.

Una cosa que diría es que definitivamente reserve una mesa con anticipación, ya que en las noches más ocupadas no hay personas sin cita previa. Claire fue increíble y realmente amable y atento. Incluso hizo malabares con las mesas y nos llamó al día siguiente para que pudiéramos volver a pasar nuestra última noche en Bowness. Éramos un grupo de 6 y todos pensamos que era excelente. Decoración tradicional italiana y música añadida al ambiente. Sin duda volveremos si regresamos a Bowness.

La "bienvenida" al restaurante no fue exactamente cálida y la experiencia de servicio al cliente se fue rápidamente cuesta abajo desde allí.Nunca me había hablado de una manera tan grosera un camarero ignorante mientras trataba de pedir nuestra comida. Esto hizo que mi pareja y su familia se sintieran extremadamente incómodos y yo me mordiera la lengua.Si esto no hubiera sido un sábado por la noche en COVID, 19 veces, habría subido y me habría ido a buscar otro lugar para cenar.En cuanto a la comida, no tenemos ninguna queja. Estuvo bien. No es la comida italiana más sabrosa que he comido, pero ciertamente no es la peor.Lo recomendaría No.Bowness está lleno de lugares maravillosos y acogedores para comer, que valoran a sus clientes. Desafortunadamente, no tuve esa sensación en este lugar.

Reservamos para un sábado por la noche en septiembre (¡se recomienda reservar ya que estaba muy ocupado!) Después de parecer muy modesto desde la calle, el restaurante se abre en una gran trattoria y podrías estar en cualquier lugar de Italia. El servicio fue MUY amable y siempre había alguien allí si tenía una pregunta o necesitaba más vino. . . . . Gran lista de especiales además del menú, toda nuestra comida estaba muy bien presentada, sabrosa y caliente. Tomamos el vino de la casa, que estaba absolutamente bien ya un precio muy razonable, al igual que la comida. Tengo la impresión de que si regresabas en 6 meses te recordarían y te saludarían como viejos amigos. Definitivamente regresaré, ¡me encantó!

Tuvimos una comida fantástica aquí durante nuestra estancia. Muy auténtico, me sentí como si estuviera en una de las calles secundarias de Italia. No me apetecía nada del menú. Le pregunté al camarero si el chef podía prepararme un plato que había comido en otro restaurante italiano. Llegó y, sinceramente, fue uno de los mejores que he tenido. ¡Tan complaciente con comida deliciosa!

What a disappointment. Mushroom garlic for starters. Could not taste garlic at all. Chicken in mushrooms and white wine sauce. Totally bland. Over priced and over rated.

Visited Villa Positano as a group of five last week whilst staying in the Lakes. What a first class experience, great friendly service and lovely food at a decent price. Will certainly return when next in Bowness-on-Windermere.

Llegamos por nuestro 6. 30 reserva e inmediatamente me sentí incómodo. Al ordenar nuestros platos principales llegaron 2 minutos más tarde. Mi Penne estaba bien, pero Carbonara de mi esposa era excelente. Sin embargo, estaba muy incómodo por la forma en que el camarero se inclinó sobre nosotros. Los postres eran muy buenos pero de nuevo nos apuraron. Terminamos de nuevo en la calle a las 7. 10. Totalmente inaceptable.

La mayoría del personal era maravilloso, pero uno de los camareros masculinos fue bastante desagradable con nosotros. Mi novio le preguntó cómo estaba y él respondió diciéndonos groseramente que siguiéramos con nuestro pedido. Ambos tuvimos pastas que eran bastante normales. Lo he pasado mucho mejor y nos hemos ido decepcionados.

Much like the food we have enjoyed on trips to Italy. Very authentic. Busy little restaurant. Food came out fairly quickly. Limited menu because of Covid but there was a note on the bottom saying you could request other items if you wished and they would try to accommodate. Would return if we went back to Bowness.

The food was good and good value but they did not adhere to any social distancing guidelines. We watched a table finish their meal, leave and without even simply wiping the table they sat another group down. Not acceptable normally never mind during Covid. No track & trace taken. You could do better!!!

Average, not bad just average food, we been to better restaurants on our visit to the Lake District. Steak is worth avoiding. Serving staff really helpful & friendly, but when paying the bill @ the counter the man would not enter a tip into the card machine & then ignored me when I tried to give him cash instead!

We ate here on our last night in Windermere and wish we had been able to eat here more than once. It was fully booked and we could see the staff having to turn people away constantly, testament to its reputation. This place is authentic, home cooked Italian at its very best. The staff were wonderful. The food was outstanding. Would highly recommend you eat here. We will certainly book for the next time we visit.

Food, average, if I can make as good a tomato sauce at home then I can only score average. Service was good, very fast, kids meals were ok and price fair. They only charged £1.50 for a kids ice cream which was good. Covid precautions were poor, waiters no visors or masks.Ok.

Absolutely amazing food, lovely friendly staff and quick service! We had 3 courses and left nothing, portion sizes were great! Felt as though we were on holiday and food tasted better than the restaurants we visited in Rome! Will definitely be returning again when we stay in the Lakes.

We visited the restaurant after reading reviews on trip advisor and due to the fact it was a two minute walk from the hotel. We were not disappointed the food was amazing and the staff and service was excellent. The menu was restricted due to COVID but more than enough choice. The restaurant tables are well spread out and after a party leaves everything is sanitized. If we are ever back in Bowness we will be back. I recommend booking to avoid disappointment.

The owners at Glen Wynne guesthouse recommended here, and sourced us a table for the evening. We arrived a little early, we were greeted in a wonderful friendly manner, and as the lady went to check where we were seated, a gentleman came over to enquire if he could help and we laughed as we were already being seen to. Smiles on faces of staff and customers alike were seen as we went upstairs to be seated at a lovely round table towards the back of the room. We ordered drinks, which arrived while we looked at the menu, I had lasagne as a starter, and we had garlic bread with cheese....the bread was delicious, and the lasagne to die for....a big portion for a starter but amazing taste.We then had pollo a la creme..and a special which was beef stroganoff....again amazing taste, portions size, everything was gorgeous, and the feel was so authentic and welcoming....you could have been in Italy! Nothing was too much trouble, staffing was perfection, not too slow, not too quick, no hovering...and always smiling and chatting. We deCided to share a chocolate fudge cake...again a good sized portion, with the most delicious creamy vanilla ice creamCan’t wait to go back next time we are in the Lakes!

Lovely place, service and meal, can not fault it. We had antipasto and garlic bread then pizzas, great mix of meats and veg for the started and thin, crispy bases.

We live in Bowness-on-Windermere and know the family who own Villa P well. This was our first venture out after lockdown with business acquaintances. Social distancing is well arranged considering it is a compact restaurant. We felt very safe which made our latest visit there very comfortable. As usual, food was top notch and the service as good as always. A little bit of Italy in the lakes. Highly recommend

I have been many Italians in my life, I can honestly say this is the worst food experience ever. To start the cutlery was dirty, we got it changed and didn’t think anything of us... how we were wrong.Ordered muscles for starter, came out with in 30 seconds freezing and some muscles were not even in the shell. Disgusting.Fillet steak £23I have been many for many steaks in top places and also ordinary. This is by far the worst steak of my life.Ordered a fillet, came out flat iron swimming in a pool of pepper corn sauce.... to hide the steak obviously.Red meat freezing barely cooked, more like a tuna.Also forgot one of our sides. Didn’t touch any of the food but were still charged £74.00 and not refunded by Claire and Italian manger totally dismissive, shrugged his shoulders in a so what attitude.Would not recommend this place to anyone even my worst enemy.

My partner and I ate here a few nights ago. The restaurant is beautiful, we felt as though we were back in Italy. The owners are lovely and make you feel very relaxed! The food was very fresh and delicious, we both enjoyed our meals. One thing we would say is we would have liked a break between our starter and main, as the main came out straight after - but that would be us being picky! It was a lovely evening and we will be back again soon. We would 100% recommend to others. Thank you!

What a wonderful meal which was heightened by such passionate staff. The traditional decor really added to the experience. The staff are all authentic Italians and it was a family run restaurant. I would highly recommend as the food is exceptional. You must book in advance to get a table but it’s totally worth it.

We were recommended to dine here by owners of local Guest House, Glen Wynne and we were not disappointed. The ambiance was that of a restaurant in Italy and we were served by the friendliest of staff. Both of us chose pasta dishes which were authentically scrumptious. We would definitely also recommend the cheesecake and tiramisu...both delicious. If in Bowness-on-Windermere, this is a must.

This restaurant was recommended to me and what a lovely restaraunt it is! The moment we walked in the staff were so welcoming,the atmosphere was fantastic and the meal was delicious! I had a gluten free carbanara, i wish i knew how to make it myself, i will have to try and find out how they did it so i can make it just like that at home! My son was asking the waiter questions like do you have bowls, can you speak english (whilst the waiter was speaking in english) how do you say pizza in Italian, the waiter was really good with him. I will definitely be coming back. Thank you for a lovely evening!

Loved Villa Positano! It was one of our first meals out after lockdown lifted so it was extra special. We were made to feel very welcome and the service was excellent. A slightly reduced menu at the moment to manage the current guidelines but that didn’t matter as all the Italian favourites were there. It’s tucked away a little so I don’t think as many tourists go here without knowing about it in advance. Do book before you arrive as it’s popular with the locals! We had to try the phone a few times to get through as they are usually very busy but perseverance will be worth it. Would highly recommend the Tiramisu for dessert if you have a sweet tooth.

A short taxi journey from our B&B dropped us close to this hidden gem. This is true Italian restaurant run by a friendly Italian family in traditional surroundings. We received a friendly greeting at the door and shown to our table. Hand sanitiser was readily available and tables were fairly well-spaced although the venue to quite small. The venue was at capacity and prospective customers were being turned away so it is certainly a popular place. The menu had been limited due to the current situation but there was plenty of choice especially when the blackboard specials were taken into account. We chose starters and mains and these were served very quickly. I had the mushrooms to start from the main menu with calamari chosen by my wife and daughter. For main, one of my daughters had a perfect steak with an extremely tasty seafood spaghetti chosen by my youngest. My wife and I were given lots of information about the specials from the blackboard and we opted for the grilled fish platter each. This was then made for us to share a wide selection: sardines, sea bass, king prawns, tuna, swordfish - all cooked to perfection served with roast potatoes and Mediteranean veg. Desserts were equally as delicious and we were served by extremely attentive and friendly staff. A true Italian experience and would highly recommend.

So so glad we didn’t miss Villa Positano which is down a small alley. Great place to go with kids. Varied menu. Friendly staff. Good vibes. Loved it. Recommend the SpagBol for kids; It went down a treat. Two kids can share the child’s portion tbh.

Squeezed us in at short notice, Fabulous Italian food and atmosphere, very reasonably priced. Highly recommended.

Disappointingly this restaurant does not have any vegeterian cheese options. Unable to accommodate my request despite trying to book in advance.

Great service, great food, staff very friendly and efficient, food was excellent and not expensive, well worth a visit. Would recommend making a reservation, as it get busy, we went on a Sunday evening and people were Queuing to get in.
