We chose the Pub from our Holiday Home visitors book in nearby Crook. An excellent choice we made, a warm welcome from the staff, in particular the lovely young waitress with a slight Liverpudlian accent and a Reds fan, she showed great skill in dealing with her customers. Very tasty food in a warm and pleasant atmosphere.

Myself and my partner came to the lakes for a long weekend and decided to choose this place for a roast dinner, which was well deserved after a full day of hiking. The service and the food were amazing. Shoutout to Rebecca for being a really wonderful waitress, she went above and beyond and was so so lovely. Thank you to all of you for making our meal memorable :)

Visited for lunch on a rainy Wednesday and was welcomed in and shown to a lovely table looking out of the window towards the bridge. Friendly and attentive service from a very helpful gentleman who was great with the food requirements for my pregnant wife. We had soup, roast beef sandwiches and halloumi fries, all of which were of a high quality and tasted delicious. The atmosphere in the pub is traditional and warming. We would definitely visit again, especially as the full lunch and dinner menu looked excellent.

We stayed for two nights and found this a great base for visiting the Lake District as it is close to Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside. If you like country pubs then this place has charm and character in bucket loads. The room we stayed in was lovely with huge bathroom with roll top bath and separate shower. Shower gel/ hand wash provided and smells gorgeous as are beautiful fluffy towels. Tea and coffee making facilities are also provided with fresh milk in a mini flask along with a large bottle of water. We ate in the restaurant twice and on both occasions the food was delicious and the service great. Breakfast is generous with cereals, fruit juices and toast with jams and locally produced honey followed by a choice of cooked breakfast. The staff are friendly and attentive and service is excellent, thank you Helen and Nicola for making our stay so enjoyable.

Called here this Sunday afternoon where we received a warm welcome at this dog friendly Inn. The pint of Landlord ... I've had many that were better. The good quality roast beef dinner (£20) is served complete on your plate, take note when ordering if you don't like certain veg as in my case cauliflower cheese. The beef was excellent and cooked perfectly just on the rare side. If you have a good appetite you will need more than the main course here. This establishment appears to have undergone a fairly recent sympathetic refurbishment, it hasn't lost too much of it's charm. The people running this establishment make this place stand out from the crowd.

Went with friends for Sunday lunch. We’ve been before and had great food and service and the same again this time. Apart from the waiter taking the 3 Sunday lunch orders - 1 beef and 2 lamb - asked the two people who ordered lamb if they would like Yorkshire pudding with it. They replied yes please! Very disappointed to receive the bill and see 2 Yorkshire puddings were charged at £3.90! Seems a bit steep and unnecessary when all other establishments we’ve been to include Yorkshire’s with all their roasts. Maybe something to look at Hare and Hounds as apart from this we couldn’t fault you!

We weren’t actually that hungry but kept seeing delicious food coming to the tables around us on the front terrace. We decided we could actually force ourselves to manage four starters between the two of us 😁, see photos – totally the right choice and totally delicious 😋. We have just had a weeks stay at chase cottage next door and we visited often during our stay . I really enjoyed it my husband is a real ale drinker and would have preferred more choices. The food is however excellent. This is a lovely quirky pub with friendly staff and really lovely food . The dining is plentiful with seating and it’s a small menu ( which I like ) serving high quality food and proper home made chips . Nice ambiance with the lighting and candles gives it a lovely feel . You definitely need to book even mid week . The service was very good and it was ideal for us staying close so my husband could have a drink . Definitely recommend. It’s a dog friendly place too which is nice . Only negative is could do with a bigger bar area for none diners but once the weathers better sure that will improve as people will be sitting outside also . The website hadn’t been updated and we thought it was closed mon Tue and it wasn’t so be sure to check with them on opening times . Because it’s an old building with smaller windows at dusk it’s not always clear if it’s open if you’re not local . Maybe good idea for them to light up the outside area better with the lamp on and fairy lights along with updating websites .

We had a beautiful night here over Christmas. The whole atmosphere is gorgeous - the perfect country pub. The room was stunning, with great cosy decor and an inviting stand alone bath, plus the body wash in the room smelled delicious. There were treats and a ball left out for our dog too, he was very pleased. The food was top notch, we had the steak pie and the fish and chips followed by a cheese board and the chocolate and raspberry tart. All were perfect. The staff were just lovely and we had a great chat with a waitress who was making us laugh with her love for mushy peas. The location is stunning too, surrounded by country side and great walks. Had very high expectations as family live close by and had recommended so we all arrived looking forward to a great experience. Decor and atmosphere very welcoming however we weren’t shown to our table just pointed in the general direction. We waited approx 20 mins for our drinks order (the waitress who was very friendly did apologise) and then another 10 mins for drinks to arrive (wrong bottle of wine). My main course which was a Buddha bowl was missing several items and was very disappointing. It was removed from the bill and we were offered a replacement but most of the table had finished eating at this point. We felt that the food albeit nice was very overpriced £150 for 4 adults and 2 children. No starters, one bottle of mid priced wine, one ale and two soft drinks. The cheese board was nearly £13 and two small scoops of ice cream for the children were £5.50 each no other desserts for the table. Service overall wasn’t attentive and we had to get up to ask them to take the drinks order, then again to ask for a wine list finally once more to ask for the bill. A real shame as we all wanted it to be better than it was.

We chose the Hare & Hounds as our meeting spot for family who were arriving from different parts of the UK for a wedding the following day. Even though some of our party didn't make it to the pub in time for lunch, the management were brilliant and nothing was too much trouble. I can't think of anything that could have been better, with a lovely setting, nice informal interior, great local beers (and gin!) and brilliant food - and all reasonably priced. What more can you want in a traditional English pub! Highly recommend and we'll definitely return when next in the Lake District.

Went for lunchtime Sunday roast. Their website sample menu listed nut roast with very good ingredients, but on being seated we were told nut roast off the menu and it was cheese pasty instead! Seemed a cheap alternative and not really suitable for a roast dinner. Turned out worse than I thought, a very large flat slab of pastry with a slight taste of cheese through the middle. The vegetables were warmed pickled cabbage, small amount of cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes that were more like boiled potatoes with a coating on. Worst Sunday roast ever. Would not recommend.

Five people for lunch - pub was not busy. The good: The Hare and Hounds is a traditional old country pub with a nice atmosphere, friendly staff and good food …with the exception of one meal. The bad: dead flowers on all tables (better to have no flowers than dead flowers). Slow service with one completely wrong meal served and one pot of tea forgotten about. Not the end of the world, but then this: a vegetarian meal was rejected after the first taste as being way too spicy. Soup was requested instead. Upon settling up, the bill included for both meals despite it being standard practice throughout the hospitality industry not to charge for a rejected meal …whatever the reason. Upon questioning the bill, the defence was that the meal had the word ‘spicy' in the title and that it was normally popular (which is subjective). An argument was starting so we swiftly paid for both meals without wanting to cause a scene. In all my years, this was the first time anywhere in the world that a rejected meal has ever been charged for along with its replacement. A goodwill gesture of a complimentary replacement soup, or complimentary coffees would have gone a long way towards making up for the negatives of our experience ...nobody wants an argument!

You will possibly all know the feeling when you have completed a major project, you reward yourself with a weekend away. We chose to return to Windermere in the Lake District after 4 years, and obviously we did look at suggestions on TA to find out the best places to relax and eat. Unfortunately, we wanted to return again the next day to Baha restaurant, but they were fully booked on a weekend so wandered further down the street and went into Villa Positano; a shame they weren’t fully booked. For an Italian restaurant will many customers, you served us with pasta obviously not made on your premises. And the Bolognese sauce you used was also either from a tin or jar, as it just didn’t have that fresh tomato, basil, oregamo taste a true Italian chef would insist on. The pizza was supposed to come with chicken, there was a few little cheese-covered lumps of small pieces of chicken. The waitress spilled coffee on our daughters trousers, she got a cloth wiped it up and never offered to make a fresh one considering it soaked all the sugar in the saucer. The best part was after we paid and was leaving the place, a little, bald Italian gentleman said, ‘I hope you enjoyed the best pizza or pasta for miles around?’ Now I am putting my hand on my heart, I have tasted and enjoyed Bolognese and pizza from Aldi and Lidl more. And we could have done all the meal and drinks for less than £10, they charged £48.40. And the waitress who was serving on Saturday night (7th Sept), she looked and seen we were finished apart from drinks and told a waiter with glasses, ‘Table 13, they’ll be out of here in ten minutes, sit them down stairs and they can have that table.’ Now as a paying customer, she made your establishment seem like a cheap canteen by allowing customers to hear such a comment about themselves. My review is nothing personal, however, any Italian restaurant of quality would make everything from fresh. And I dare say that because you are in such a ‘tourist trap,’ you will get customers as the better ones like Baha are booked out as people want quality.
