Viking Fish & Chips in Cambridge

Viking have been under new management since December 2023 and I like the new team. We had fish-n-chips and both parts of this classic combo were done perfectly for us.

I decided to come here again for the first time in 5 months as I was disappointed with the food last time. I was surprised to see how much cleaner and brighter the place looked. The fish was very fresh and the chips were the best i’ve ever had in my life. Amazing service would definitely recommend buying food from here

We had a haddock and chips takeaway from The Viking tonight for the three of us. It was absolutely delicious. Light crispy batter, lovely flaky haddock. The chips were well cooked. (Cheese and ketchup added by us). Lovely staff. We waited about 6 minutes for it to be freshly cooked. Definitely worth the visit.

Super delicious - a must try chippy!! Recently I ordered a large takeaway of fish, chips, veggie burgers, and curry sauce for a dinner of 20 people. The staff at Viking were incredibly helpful and accommodating. I ordered a day in advance and picked up everything on the night of the party. When we opened the giant box at home, everything was still hot and delicious! Friends came up to me throughout the night complementing the food and asking where it was from! Absolutely stellar fish and chips - the people working there make it a truly fantastic chippy :)

Top marks good size medium chips , Curry sauce was delicious 👍 staff was friendly and order came out super quick

Over the years I've been here many times, but not for many months (probably sometime last year). I went in today (02.06.23) and bought £4 of chips. Unfortunately, they were extremely disappointing. I like my chips crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside; today the chips I was served were completely under cooked - white, really soft on the outside, not a single chip was crispy. I won't be visiting here again.

As one of the previous owners of the Viking I’m upset to read such negative reviews, both myself and business partner are still working helping new owners out. Nothing much has changed, same suppliers, mostly same staff with my business partner frying the food frequently.

I agree with previous posts.after some disappointing fish and chips recently,i thought I would give them one more try.sadly they were poor again,so this will be my last visit unless I hear the reviews improve. the new owners, what are you doing differently to the previous owners??

As other reviewers have stated since being taken over this chip shop has gone down hill, the last time (and it will be the last time) I had a take away we both had to throw the chips away, they tasted disgusting, I won't be back under this ownership

Went in today to pick up fish and chips for my husband, what a nice surprise to be properly greeted with a smile, a rarity these days! Chips were just being freshly cooked so waited a couple of minutes, but had a chat with the two guys working there. My husband said the fish was lovely, I had a few of the chips and they were very nice too. Would definitely return, made a nice change to be welcomed and valued as a customer. Well done!

As with other reviewers recently, a huge, disappointing down turn since new owners took over. Our meal tonight was significantly more expensive than a few weeks ago. The chips were limp yet undercooked, sausage unpleasant and fish batter soggy with particularly greasy after-feel. Such a shame.

Been a regular customer since I was a child & went with my Dad (around 60 years!) Always been difficult to resist going in when you smell the aroma if passing by. Sadly it changed owners a few weeks ago & has not been the same since. There was an after taste & cloying feeling in my mouth after eating, don’t know if it is just the oil or how it’s cooked but it has put me off going back. Also miss the old staff - end of an era I think.

We’ve been customers for many years. We tried with the new owners but as with the other people being disappointed we too were very much so. The fish was old and a strange taste and soggy fries. Why can’t the new owners follow the previous owners way of cooking as that was the best.

I had some fish and chips few weeks ago the fish greasy as hell and chips looked like they needed cooking. I been going here for years I can't explain it how come it has gone so wrong. Have they been taken over there was couple of new faces. Plus now with the road being re done why go there service is great but food is crap!! I suggest they take look Pimp my fish never a bad meal.

Over the years I have visited about once a month but today was my last. Over the last six months the quality has diminished and today's were disgusting it was the worst cod I have ever had, not convinced it was even cod. It was grey and slimy. The chips were terrible too. The price has crept up too now £9 when tatties are cheap they skimp on portion size. They seemed well over staffed too there were at least three members of staff surplus to requirements.

Perfect. Good food, wonderful staff, I've been going here for years and have never found fault. Carry on the good work.

Service with a smile, the staff are always so friendly, chips always taste fresh, and the only place in town you can get a smokey sausage. 10/10 would highly recommend!

They went a step further in their ability to have no customer service. having waited from 8.50-8.58 I was told there was no chips except for those that had already ordered. If they shut at (pm... shut your doors at 9pm and work til 9.15....

Excellent fish and chips, friendly staff, had to queue outside on the pavement because it was so busy but definitely worth the wait and the staff are super efficient so didnt have to queue too long.

Mi hija y yo hemos estado en el vikingo antes, y disfrutamos absolutamente al 100% de la deliciosa comida que se ofrece. comí pescado la última vez, que la masa era deliciosa y crujiente, y cuando llegas al pescado, estaba muy bueno. hoy, comí una hamburguesa con queso y estaba deliciosa y suculenta, la disfruté muchísimo y no desperdicié nada. Visited my local chip shop for a family meal! Great food, great service! Can’t fault a thing!!! Was great to see them open again after such a long time I missed my cheesy chips and chicken!

I’ve been coming here for years and was so pleased to see it open again after lockdown , we joined the line and was served efficiently with lovely fish and chips they have put great social distancing measures in place and now except card payments..

La masa estaba marrón y empapada, no crujiente ni dorada, el pescado por dentro estaba rancio y las patatas fritas empapadas. Con mucho gusto esperaría a que mi comida se cocine fresca cada vez. Lamentablemente, no volveré a visitarlo. Con la mala comida va mal, así que solo una estrella para cada uno. Un buen servicio no puede compensar la mala comida.

My family has been going here for years and they have always been consistent and reasonably price - the Cod and Chips is 10/10.

The staff are very kind and lovely (It seems a family run business). I have taken only fish and chips from them since 6 years ago. A few weeks ago went there after a couple of years. Fish was fresh and of high quality as before. The fish is not that oily and it is well cooked. It is a take away and always busy. It is not in the centre so no tourist, however there are always people ahead of you to order. As you see many locals and frequent customers in the shop you would be sure about the quality.

I have met many people along the way that rate this venue ,the fish is always fresh and generous portions,the home made chips are great ! Service is efficient and friendly . I highly rate this fish and chip shop ,i live near addenbrookes and will happily drive across town to the viking .

We came as family had lovely fish and chips excellent service the children loved the chicken nuggets which were whole chunks of chicken , fish was lovely and fresh .will definitely be returning.

Fish clearly been cooked long before my visit and was almost inedible. Rock hard batter with a meagre amount of dried up fish inside. Straight in the bin.

The staff are lovely but the food well,leaves a lot to be desired. Chicken not good. Chips coated in lashings of oil. Fish ok. Sausages overcooked .My guess they need a new fryer and a different type of potato.

Probably the worst chippy I have ever tried in my life disgusting all I could taste is fish in every chip my favourite meal is chippy complete let down horrible.. My hands stank for the rest of the day of fish !! Washed them loads still could smell it .. only tried about 5 of them. Horrible taste in my mouth all day the sausage was the same so cheap probably the most budget sausages you can get I’ll never return.. tried a few chip shops in Cambridge and they are all bad but this by far the worst . They must of been cooked in the same oil as the fish as it so so over powering .. I ain’t trying any more chip shops in Cambridge all so poor ..

I have never had anything other than spot on fish and chips from here, whatever the time of year, and also time of day. This visit was no exception, and I look forward to my next portion.

I stop here most Wednesday's on my way home from work. The food is great and the staff are friendly. Very clean and great service. Reasonable priced.

No sé qué es, pero para mí el pescado y las patatas fritas suelen tener mejor sabor en la costa. El bacalao y las papas fritas del Viking han sido tan buenos en la última media docena de visitas en el último año que comenzamos a usarlo. El pescado siempre ha sido carnoso, sabroso y bien cocinado al igual que las patatas fritas. Las porciones son abundantes y el Viking será nuestra elección número 1 de fish and chips en el norte de Cambridge si continúan como están.

He tenido comida de aquí durante casi 50 años y de 3 generaciones de la familia Cook. Siempre buena calidad, siempre buenas raciones excelentes. ¡Uno de mis mayores temores de mudarme al sur fue no poder tomar un buen té, todos mis temores desaparecieron cuando descubrí que "The Viking" descarta algunos de los mejores pescados y papas fritas que he tenido! Esta noche fue mi segunda visita y, una vez más, el pescado estaba excelentemente preparado y las patatas fritas también eran fabulosas. El personal también fue muy amable y acogedor, y el menú incluye opciones vegetarianas, lo cual me complació mucho la próxima vez que voy a probar la hamburguesa vegetariana.

We grab takeaway from here on a fairly regular basis. The food is always great whether we fancy cod, plaice, battered sausage, fishcakes or the rest. The chips in particular are always delicious with huge portions. Staff are friendly and efficient. Only downside to me is that it's cash only.

Every time I come to Cambridge, I make sure I don't leave without coming here to have my dose of Cod and Chips! The quality of the food is superb and they're not tight with their portions either!! Diane and the staff are brilliant!!!

Went here last night for dinner, the food is amazing, staff are really friendly and really helpful. I definitely recommend having a cheese burger. I would rather go here to get a cheese burger than Mc Donald’s. Very reasonable priced too. Definitely going back again!!!

Extremely rude staff. Unacceptable to have two mouthy staff, shouting out the back door at me about parking when your not even open. Ps Wilko next door happily said I could park there for 10 mins and also to tell your staff to stop parking outside there shop as well. You should try being a little more human.

Went to the Viking Friday night had large cod and chips great quality and great value .In my opinion the best fish and chip shop in Cambridge and superb staff.

Decided on a visit here as see it had good reviews. But can't see why as I had battered sausage and chips. The chips tasted like they had been cooked in old oil so tasted of the fish that had been fried too. And the sausage tasted low quality. I don't think I will visit this place again.

Cambridge seems to have few great places for fish and chips, so it’s lucky to have somewhere like this. Freshly cooked, piping hot and stunning value! This place can’t be bettered for value. Or should I say this plaice can’t be battered for value? Perhaps not. Anyway, enjoy!

i love a good fish & chips but I've visited many shops in Cambridge and this shop in my opinion is not at the top of my list.

Me encanta mi pescado y patatas fritas. Estoy en serio. Tiene que ser un enorme pedazo de pescado y un montón de patatas fritas. Este solla (jajaja) cumple (he tenido peces más grandes, pero sólo en Yarmouth - volveré, Yarmouth, así que ten cuidado). Popped into the Viking last Friday night for fish and chips and a savaloy. OMG. The code was thick and juicy, beautifully cooked and the chips were a very generous portion. My mum's savaloy she said took her back years to when she used to live in the big smoke! The service was very efficient and the young lady who took my order was polite and helpful. Well done to all the staff at the Viking.

We moved eight years ago from Cambridge but this place is so good that when I come back and visit, I am happy to travel from the south of the city to the north just for a bag of fish and chips. Prices may have gone up but the quality of the fish and chips is still incredibly good. The people are great,friendly and helpful. The first time I went back, they offered to wrap my chips in extra paper as I had commented that I was staying south. Much cheaper than eating in a hotel and much better!

Can't get much better than the 'Viking' for take-away fish & chips! Generous portions, great value and always fresh. This place is always busy, and stands out from the generic you find. Personal order, haddock & chips!^

Viking fish and chips serve Great food every time. Always Good value. The portions are very good sizes.

No credit or debit cards taken but the best fish and chips around. Large portions, we have a large fish and medium chips to share between two people,Very fresh hush and freshly cooked so you might need to wait 10 minutes, but worth the wait. Takeaway only.There is an ATM at the co-op a few doors away if you need to get cash.

Te regular portion of haddock was large; the large very big. Unlike some fish and chips, these were not dripping in grease - just right. 3.75 for regular, 4.75 for large. Cod is the same price. One large chips (purchased separately) could serve 3-4 easily. There is limited parking available out front. Note: only take cash. Definitely the best fish and chip take away I have found in Cambridge.

We are a tough crowd for a chippy; one veggie, one five year old and fifth-decade foodie-ish. Viking met the challenge with aplomb. The veggie Mrs got her veggie fries in a timely manner; not always the case at chippies - where an elderly cheese and onion fry often needs to be dug out of the bottom of the freezer. The five year old and the old duffer got to share in a large cod augmented with a saveloy and a battered sausage. We all dug into an ample offering of large chips - that actually beat us. Mushy peas aren't my bag but, the Mrs proclaimed the mushy peas, sufficiently mushy. So, a success. My only thought is that the chips might have benefited from a little longer in oil/lard that was a little hotter - but they were fine, particularly when doused in vinegar. The service was friendly and the shop well organised.

We always have fish on a Friday even if away so searched on Trip Advisor for a fish and chip shop whilst in Cambridge for a weekend away, Viking looked the best choice. Pleasantly surprised on both quality and quantity, would definately recommend to both locals and visitors.

There has been a Viking Fish and Chip shop on Milton Road since I was a boy and that's a long time, Although there have been several proprietors over the years, the quality of food has always been maintained at a high level an remains so today. Nowadays, there are all sorts of different foods on offer, but I still love my cod and chips!

Went in there today as I was hankering for fish and chips, what can I say the best chips I've had in a long time. Curry sauce was fantastic, chips cooked fresh and proper tasty. Sausage was great as well.Go and try it, don't take my word for it.

Delicious cod and chips. Should have gone large - my cod was gone all too quickly! Fish was perfectly cooked, not overdone like at many places. The batter was crispy. The chips were just the right amount of squishy. I love the fact they do proper curry sauce that is still warm.

Went here Friday and the queue was out of the door. A good sign. Had two large cod and chips which were fresh cooked. Very large portion. The fish was white and flaky and the batter crisp. Not at all greasy. Staff were very quick and apologised for keeping people waiting because they were so busy. Reasonable price. We will be going again.
