I couldn't find a single fault. This place has everything you would expect from a high end tasting menu, but the service and staff make it a much better experience by being informal and personable. The flavours were always interesting but never overpowering or weird for the sake of it. The paired wines felt well thought out and worked exquisitely. An all round excellent experience.

Best fish restaurant in Cambridge. The general approach to their dishes seems to be: amazingly cooked fish + fermented ingredient X; and it works. Service, Atmosphere, and food are all insanely good when considering the price. We thought the dishes would be of the format “one scallop per plate” and thus ordered way too much since the portions are quite generous. Really the only thing we’d like for future visits: more raw stuff on the menu (but then we are aware this is highly seasonal) and maybe a few more inventive non-alcoholic drink options. But honestly, consider these champagne problems… All in all, amazing restaurant and highly recommended.

I love Fin Boys. I have previously left 5 star reviews and they should stand - previous food and general experience amazing. This however is a very very different story. I booked for Mother’s Day 17 days ago. I clicked the link on Instagram to book having seen the special Mothering Sunday opening. To put this in to context this is my Mums favourite Cambridge restaurant. And to add my mum is mid seventies with a life limiting condition so I’m aware we may not have many more mothers days together. And she doesn’t live in Cambridge like me - she lives 4 hours away. I did not tell her I had booked Fin Boys for today - we turned up as booked and confirmed (48 hours before) at 14.30. It was immediately apparent there was a major issue - the booking was not on the system as it was with resdiary and “they hadn’t used this for over 4 weeks”!! Despite the booking being made via the link on the website. Despite me saying this I was berated and told I hadn’t upgraded the browser and they had no booking for me and mum and I’d booked via their wrong system. In front of a room of other guests. Also stated as we had booked before that might be the issue. Feeling utterly mortified and upset they then said they might be able to fit us in whilst seating other guests around us and leaving us standing in the middle of the room. It was said begrudgingly and made me feel we were being given a massive favour. I appreciate it was busy but there wasn’t even an apology and “hey we are so sorry we have booking issues please take a seat and we will sort it”. Especially as returning customers. It was a total you have made a mistake and we might help you. How can you make a mistake booking via their finboys system with additional confirmation 48 hours before (see photos)? How can you have 2 active booking systems at the same time with one not talking to the other? Especially on Mother’s Day . I’m not going to lie - we left and I was crying all the way down Mill road. One of the last Mother’s Days I might be luckily enough to spend with my mum totally ruined. And dealt with in a really really poor way. It is unacceptable to blame the customer and berate them in front of other guests when they’ve done nothing wrong. It is unacceptable to have two live booking systems with no communication with one to the others It’s unacceptable to at not least be nice and try and make things better when the customer has done nothing wrong. I’m lucky that my lovely mum gave me a hug as a sobbed down mill road and we found a lovely other place for a late lunch. I will never however forget how we were treated here though

Managed to get a Sat night cancellation at short notice and we weren't disappointed. Initially sitting facing the window but they kindly moved us to the kitchen bar before too long. Staff were engaged, knowledgeable, and attentive while retaining casual informality. Generous owner Richard responded well to our curiosity and made us feel very welcome. The beguiling black butter to go with a sourdough crumpet was a perfect fatty umami bomb to start. Each spoon of concentrated Mussel velouté reminded me of every gorgeous mussel I've ever eaten. Smokey eel sat comfortably between the contrasts of sweet cauliflower purée and wild garlic. Not a single dish was out of place and the wine flight was well chosen and interesting. Overall, we rated this amongst the best meals we've had anywhere in recent years.

Had a table for 5 for (what turned out to be) their first Sunday service. They provided a four course fixed menu, with a choice of small plates for a starter, followed by a main of a Trout Wellington. I have to say it was all fantastic, but the Trout Wellington was an absolute treat, and they cooked it to perfection. An ingenious dish, with a generous portion fit for a Sunday banquet. Really perfectly done, fish cookery of that level is rarely found. Very much worth the price, and I hope you keep the Wellington on the menu as we'll be back for more 😄 Service was equally fantastic, my wife was pregnant, and they adjusted a dish for her with no issues.

Ooft...this place has been on our hit list since we moved to Cambridge last autumn. Did not disappoint at all. Came for the tasting menu, didn't get the wine pairing option but did get a bottle of the reisling which was delicious. From start to finish, every dish was brilliantly presented - excellent knowledge from all the staff we engaged with and the care for the ingredients comes through in the way all of them talked. Loved every course. Timing between courses was also really well done which is always my worry about tasting menus. (Was about 2hr 30 from start to bill being paid). We left full, impressed, and both agreed the value for money in that tasting menu was great. Hard to pick a highlight as every course on our menu was brilliant...Okay fine, the prawn toast and crudo. Atmosphere was lovely, we had a counter top table which I'll be sure to try specify in future. Will come back and support this place more. Don't really take food photos but did grab a menu photo.

My father and I recently dined at this spot nestled on Mill Road. Having hastily unpacked my room for university, my father and I trekked over Parker’s piece to Fin Boys. We had both long wanted to try this restaurant however one of our family has a fish allergy thus we had previously admired from afar. The reputation preceded it and we were excited, if not a touch apprehensive, to see whether our lofty expectations could ever be matched. Spoiler, they were. The food was impeccable and the complementing wines were a real treat. We opted for two small plates and two large plates which was more than enough food for two people. The dishes were incredibly rich and the quality of ingredients meant you were sufficiently satiated. The vibe inside the restaurant was relaxed and pleasant, with each member of the team taking their time to enjoy genuine conversation with the diners at chefs table about each dish coming out. Whilst the menu is on the expensive side, I believe this a very fair price for the quality of produce and the high standard of work. Finboys is conscious of its quality and I respect any business that doesn’t set its stool out too low. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to celebrate an occasion and I can’t wait to return.

Recomendado!

This is a small restaurant specialising in the freshest of fish. You can it along the bar and watch the chefs at work, but as a group of four we were seated around a table. Being lunchtime the menu wasn't huge but all of the dishes were tempting. I opted for a starter of crudo, with four types of raw fish in oil with dill. Had the fish been any fresher it would have swum off the plate. I followed with roast monkfish, perfectly cooked. We all finished with afogato with a measure of coffee liqueur. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The service was friendly and efficient. The price, considering this is Cambridge and it's fresh seafood, not excessive, even though we were unable to resist the temptation of a wine list with several local(-ish) and other interesting offerings.

The food was good, although after hearing many good reviews I was a bit disappointed. Expected to be wowed, as the speciality is fish. However, the main I had was very bland. Our friends confirmed it is usually of higher standard. Perhaps the chef was having an off night. Unfortunately due to the expense, I wouldn’t rush back. Dine in for 1, Oct 2024. Do make a reservation. I enjoyed the window seat as it was great lighting (even when rainy) and very peaceful. This was a hearty lunch but I ate all of it but 2pc of sourdough. Next time I don’t need that much food (bread). Sourdough - 6.8/10 - 4 large slices warm bread with big heap of black butter. Black butter was savory and interesting and I kept coming back for more. Crumpet with crab - 5.8/10 - HEAVY and suuuper peppery. You can’t really taste the crab, just the pepper. The crumpet was thick and dense but fluffy, but with the thick cacio Pepe sauce it was just too much. 6 oysters - 7.8/10 - first one was very gritty but the remaining 5 were good. The “fin vin” was a bit too overpowering with the sesame oil so I overdid the first one, second one, and the third one (decreasing every time). By the forth I just dipped the spoon, and flicked two tiny drops and it was better. The other two I just enjoyed with lemon and they were lovely. Mussel dashi - 9.4/10 - wow. What a combo of flavors! I didn’t know what to expect but this is more like a hearty bowl of soup. I found the green olives made it a touch too salty, they were also the only things I left in the bowl (but alas, I don’t love olives so if you do I’m sure you will find it to be delicious). The squash and mussels and dashi were the stars tho. Big juicy mussels and perfectly soft and almost mushy in the best way. The dashi, although a tad salty was incredible and I finished every last drop. I would Service - friendly but incredibly slow. I guess it’s good they don’t rush you. Over 15min or downtime btwn finishing the oysters and getting the mussel dashi. Would definitely come back and try more items.

Nice enough food, some dishes were great, others underwhelming with little flavour. Slightly misleading advertising, you would be lead to belive that fin boys use the freshest from individual day boats, yet the halibut that we had was actually farmed. I have never come across farmed halibut, and I do not support the fish farming industry, a reason for choosing this restaurant. The wine pairing was good as was the service. An extractor fan would be a good edition as everything is cooked in the same room as the diners. (Edit after responce from owner) I fully understand about the halibut farming process, I listened intently as you proudly informed me of the process which I didn't know existed. A sad revelation. Work needed responding to your customers you can't be wrong can you ! I didnt leave the restaurant all evening, maybe another unhappy customer ?

We had the pleasure of dining at Finboys restaurant this evening and we were thoroughly impressed by the exceptional seafood experience they offered. The dishes were prepared with perfectionist precision, yet without overcomplicating the flavors or the ambiance. The portion sizes were just right, allowing us to savor each bite without feeling overwhelmed. The combination of fish we had, including, oysters, monkfish and hake, showcased the unique flavors of each ingredients while complementing each other beautifully. It was evident that great care and attention to detail went into crafting each dish. Having dined at various five-star restaurants in various places ,we can confidently say that your establishment stands out as truly exceptional. The culinary team deserves all the credit for creating such a memorable dining experience. The cost of the food was well worth the exceptional quality and artistry. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the waitresses and the person who came up with the baby chair idea for our daughter. The eel soup got tiny bones. They didn't even proactively offering a waiver of service charge for that kind of fault, as a fine-dining restaurant it was a shame (for the price they are charging, it is comparable to No. 22nd and I will rank it as a fine-dining restaurant and benchmark against the likewise). Absolutely amazing! The place is beautiful, with a great atmosphere, and the staff are kind and friendly. As for the food? It's really tasty, and there's no other place like this in Cambridge. To start, we had oysters and the sourdough with the Fin Boys' black butter, which has a unique flavour, along with some of the best prawn toasts we've ever had. For mains, we tried the John Dory fish and a trout Wellington, both of which were very tasty and we finished with an affogato. Highly recommend! If you're thinking of visiting this place, don't hesitate to make a reservation straight away.

We went for our second visit the other day and again found delicious food and wine on the tasting menu. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for - the quality is fantastic. The staff are passionate about what they do and clearly love food and cooking it (one even had a tattoo of a tin of sardines in tribute to his love of fish). Service is unpretentious and excellent. I cannot fault this place.

Delicious food and an incredibly friendly staff. I've gone for the regular menu and the tasting menu and both have been delicious!

We had a very nice lunch here. Personally we enjoyed the prawn toast and the eel dish the most. Oh and the black garlic butter and sourdough bread. Yum! The salmon ‘mousse’ didn’t taste like salmon to us but it was wrapped in salmon so maybe that’s what the idea was. (?) The scallops were beautiful, we thought the green curry was a little boring, a little kaffir lime and split coconut would’ve killed it though! We wish the ice cream was better quality in our affogato, it had little ice bits in it. We tried all the white wines BTG on the menu and thought hm nice, but more fuller bodied/spicier whites would’ve complimented most of the richer dishes better. Perhaps a couple more with slightly higher res sugar…. It was a nice experience all in all and the staff was helpful and friendly. So thank you!

I had made a reservation for a restaurant on the 29th of February, for the same evening, and had to pay a £40 booking fee. However, I quickly realized that I couldn't make it to the reservation, and tried to cancel the booking just 10 minutes after I had made it. Unfortunately, I found out that I couldn't cancel via the email confirmation link or by telephone. I tried calling them four times but could not get through to anyone. I even left two messages, requesting them to confirm the cancellation upon returning my call. I also sent an email today after seeing they'd kept my £40, but was informed that it wasn't their responsibility and that I should have informed them via email. They didn't even try to compensate or help me and blamed a third party for the inconvenience. Awful customer service and a very flimsy excuse.

Lovely food and lovely chef Charlotte who served us! Prawn toast is by far the best I've ever had and a great wine selection too, would definitely recommend 🐟

absolutely spectacular kitchen-side experience ... prepared before your eyes by friendly chefs ... these guys do wonderful things with delicious looking fresh raw fish .. Ceviche ... wellingtons ... scallops in light curry ... prawn toast ... wonderful stuff ... and certainly the a la carte menu is not pricey ... the two of us shared a whole cascade of delicious dishes and loved it!

The tasting menu we had was excellent and the wine pairing worked very well with it. The seafood here really is outstanding. Fantastic service, and a very good level of gluten-free accommodation for me. An excellent restaurant that I will continue to look forward to eating at whenever I find myself in Cambridge.

A shame about the bandwagon of one star reviews below... This place is fantastic. Fresh and beautifully designed dishes, solid wine list, and knowledgeable, friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit for any and all seafood fans!

My friends and I visited Fin Boys last Wednesday for a special night of German inspired dishes with paired wines. Absolutely fantastic, highly imaginative dishes and excellent value for money. I have also visited on several occasions and have enjoyed the a la carte menu and set menus. Highly recommended. See you again soon!

This place is awful! Such rude staff and from the looks of all these bad reviews as well the managers apparent ego mania and inability to take criticisms. It must be a hell to work there.

My boyfriend and I had their tasting menu on 20th Jan (Saturday) which included raw oyster. On the coming Monday both my bf and I started vomiting - I had a high fever and my bf also got diarrhea. I wrote an email to the restaurant to inform them of this and they said they would talk to their oyster supplier and keep me in the loop. However I have not heard from them since then. I also heard from friends that this happened to thee as well when they dined at this restaurant, so I think it is worth mentioning to people who consider going there EDIT: When I posted this I didn’t even read previous reviews and was not aware of similar thing happening to other people a few days ago, while the owner was so keen to classify this as the bandwagon effect. (AND The friends I mentioned above dined here quite a while ago). Now that I have read other negative reviews, I am truly <amazed> at how this restaurant handled stuff they don’t want to hear.

FOOD POISONING! I had originally posted a great review after eating at Finboys on Friday lunchtime. Both my friend and I had oysters and on Saturday night we both started vomiting violently and I now have a serious fever. Other people have recently been posting about this on here (all after eating oysters) and the restaurant’s response has been to simply apologise and claim it is Norovirus. Well it could be the oysters or it could be Norovirus, but Norovirus is usually spread by human faeces, so if it is Norovirus then somebody working at the restaurant is clearly not washing their hands when they go for a number two. I think rather than saying sorry, you should be offering compensation to people and seriously keeping an eye on your staff. Once can be forgiven as unfortunate, multiple times cannot. EDIT: Since posting this review, the restaurant has replied saying it’s norovirus and probably something we came into contact before we ate at the restaurant. I am absolutely stunned at this response. There are three people who have posted recent reviews here saying they’ve got food poisoning after eating the oysters, the oysters are the only thing my friend and I had in common. I’m sorry but there’s a common denominator here and it’s your restaurant and you should do something about it because food poisoning is potentially very serious. EDIT: Also staggering is the suggestion that I should contact their oyster suppliers for compensation! That is just not how things work. You served the oysters, your responsibility. EDIT: like the previous reviewers, I have decided to report this restaurant to the council. Owner called me this morning and actually got angry when I said I disagreed that asking me to seek compensation from the supplier was the way to go. This restaurant’s success will quickly turn around with this sort of insane attitude.

Me and my friend went to Fin Boys on Friday and shared oysters. Since then both of us have been feeling very sick, vomiting and having fever. The stuff says that it must be Noravirus, which even if it was we got it from Fin Boys lunch. They try to blame it on anything but themselves. The only period of time me and my friend spent together is that one lunch in Fin Boys and we both got sick. There is no other explanation why we would simultaneously have food poisoning. The fact that the stuff doesn't even want to acknowledge the issue just shows how seriously they take their customers. Multiple people have commented on getting sick from those oysters. The least you can do is pull them off the menu until you find what is the problem.

EDIT : Ate on Thursday not wednesday . Everything was just a bit meh. We had oysters to start which were ok. Then we had a cold mussel salad which was fine. Two mains were good but the dessert tasted like pure basil, really overpowering. At one point you could hear members of staff behind the counter talking negatively about (assuming) another member of staff. Found ourselves both suffering from a bad case of noravirus on the Friday evening which we presume is from the oysters. EDIT. After that insane response from the owners I have reported them to the council. Thoroughly encourage others to do the same.

Have eaten at Fin Boys many times and for some reason never thought to add a review. Only seeing some people whine about imaginary oyster problems they decided to start slinging mud with made me think I ought to add balance because, well, my friends and I have eaten hundreds of oysters here over lots of visits and no one has ever been sick. In fact, I’m not even the worlds biggest committed oyster fan but theirs are always delicious, light, fresh, delicate, a manageable size, and their own accompanying sauce knocks most of your mignonette or Tabasco options out of the park. The rest of the fish is very decent as well and usually very nicely cooked as well as served in imaginative and creative ways. The wine list is accessible and affordable whilst still having something special for that odd occasion too. The guys know what they are doing and do it well.

Buenas fichas, pero no lo suficientemente bueno para justificar el precio. 89 por unas fichas grandes que apenas pasarían por una regular en ningún otro sitio.

One of the best fish and chip shops in Cambridge. Sadly, it seems to be closed now. I hope they come back at some point

My wife and I had the Buffet. For drinks we ordered a Mocktail and the Godfathers Manhattan. There were two options of steak served at the buffet. One was Medium and the other was blue. Both were cold. After somehow finishing our food our drinks still had not come. When finally getting our drinks, my wife recieved a Strawberry Mojito Mocktail (this was fine) and I got a Coors that looked like it had been sitting out. (Rim was sticky and the beer was not cold, let alone NOT WHAT I ORDERED) Overall Food was subpar at best Service struggled but I think they seemed understaffed so, I dont fully blame them.
