We stayed one night at The Victoria while cycling coast to coast (23/07/21) The landlady Tien was fantastic, she was welcoming and helpful-even taking me to see a local cycle repair man to arrange to fix my bike (at 10pm!!!) despite the pub being jam packed during the annual music festival. The rooms although basic are clean, the bed comfy and shower hot-nothing else was required! Highly recommend this place for a top quality stay-it's not five star in the luxury department but the customer care is unmatched. We will stay again.

We visited here while away for a few days after Christmas for a few drinks and a curry, and we certainly wasn't disappointed . We were warmly greeted at the bar by a lovely friendly lady we got reasonably priced drinks a red wine and larger, locals were friendly too. We had a few games of pool and a couple more drinks then went in a room at the back for our meal, warmly met again by the chef and we order told him how hot we wanted it and it came freshly cooked and just perfect, we have eaten currys all over the uk and in India and this was one on our top currys list, thank you Victoria spice loved our night out thanks to you

This restaurant is now known as Kazana and operates out of the back room of the Victoria pub. The whole place itself is nothing to write home about and looks in need of a good refurbishment and decoration. We were warned about this by some locals who said that the food is worth closing your eyes to the decor for. After eating there we can confirm that the curries are really very good and the chef is exceptionally keen to ensure that you are enjoying his food. My wife's curry was not quite spicy hot enough for her so he whipped it away and within a couple of minutes it was back with her entirely to the taste she had requested. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and went away very happy.

I'm sorry to write this really. We had been recommended this place from the apartments we were staying in. We called earlier in the day to book and due to a larger booking we were asked if 8pm was ok of which we said yes. When we arrived it took a short while to be served a drink at the bar and this was very limited in drink choices. However thought ok it's a small village pub/restaurant so gave it a chance We finally got to sit at our table around 30 minutes later than we booked for. We sat at the top of the room with a group that were in from 7.30pm. We ordered and waited for our food. The popadoms came relatively quick and were nice enough. The group that were in before us hadn't even had their mains and I saw them order before we sat down to the table. Starters came, they missed 1 of our 3 starters off the order. Then we had to wait that to come. We had a long wait for mains. They missed yup that as well, the tandoori grill came and he said he had added some prawns on it as a sorry for being such a long delay. Now, had this been my husbands dish it would not have been a problem, however I have a severe allergy to prawns! I was horrified to see they added prawns on without asking first. So after some discussion me and my husband just swapped dishes so we didnt wait any longer. By the time we ate it was gone 10pm by the time we got out mains and to be honest we had gone past the hunger as we waited so long. I have marked it as a 3 as the food was tasty and from what I can gather they chef rents out the kitchen here at the victoria spice. He would do so much better having his own place. With staff he can train as the bar staff here were serving behind bar and taking orders for food. Alot of chaos and not organised at all. The waitress was friendly and very apologetic but with a little more organisation it would be so much better. I actually walked out and left my husband to deal with the bill as we were waiting such a long time for this too. I have to add the group of locals that were at the table were lovely and friendly, they actually made the teuo more bearable but as a couple on their mini moon I was not impressed by the place. I dont usually write bad reviews but I'm struggling to get over the long wait and the flippant adding of prawns to my dish even though they meant well. I hope they can keep up the good food but mkrenis needed here. Great reviews before our visit so feel very disappointed indeed.

14 of us ate here last night . Food was excellent. Living in the north east we have an abundance of fantastic Indian restaurants and take aways but the food here is up there with the best of them. Very reasonably priced , generous potions and quick service . Highly recommend.

We ordered a takeaway over the phone and went to pick it up. Its a pub/bed and breakfast its a little out dated when you arrive but not bothered by this as the reviews were really good. Well I must say the owners and staff were lovey and very welcoming ,so we stayed for a pint The owner was talking to us about the chef and he was a great chef from Bangladesh, the food was amazing fresh and great depth of flavour definitely recommend.

We arrived late into Alston and the spice was the only place said to be open and serving, we literally walked past the chef heading to the local co-op. When we got to the pub he’d shut a little early due to it being quiet that night, he thankfully and with much gratitude opened up again and sorted us out, I went for my default masala rice and keema naan. Great price and it was good food.

Reliably good grub at very reasonable prices. The vegetarian range is sufficient to present us with our only difficulty - we're spoilt for choice.

This place was recommended by the owner of the apartment we rented. We had had a long day and found we could have an Indian takeaway from this pub. We probably arrived at the busiest time as there was a 60th birthday in full swing but this wasn't an issue, we were greeted by friendly welcoming staff who took our order quickly. We decided to have a couple of drinks while we waited, talk about cheap spirits, wow we pay double that in Yorkshire! There is no denying that it could probably do with a bit of a makeover but this said it did not detract in the slightest from the welcome, the drinks and indeed the food. We got the food back to the apartment and we were not disappointed, the poppadoms and pickles for two were delicious, we shared a peshwari naan and peshwari rice, absolutely gorgeous. I had the chicken balti, the flavours were really good and my husband had the chefs special of chicken jalfrezi. It was £30 in total for our takeaway probably about right I would say. If you love a curry and are prepared to look beyond the decor, I would definitely give it a try because you will be pleasantly surprised.

So having read the reviews I thought it was worth a visit. Walking up the High Street in Alston it doesn't exactly look like an Indian restaurant but don't be put off by that! The restaurant part is at the back of the pub and again is nothing amazing but wait until the food comes out! The staff were very attentive, the chef came out to talk to us and overall it was a great night. There is an excellent choice on the menu and like other reviewers have said the food really is fab. Take away seems very popular as well so although the restaurant wasn't busy the kitchen was. Don't be put off by the outside, when you're on the inside the food and service is excellent.

This really is an unexpected delight! The food is very fresh, you can tell that it has been prepared and is not from a jar. I have never eaten in but have had take away 3 times and it was excellent each time

We visited this restaurant in May as a party of 6. Our first impression was "what have we booked here". The food serving area is room at the back of a shabbily decorated public bar. We had pre dinner drinks in the bar.

The place looks unappealing in the extreme - the back room behind the bar of a tired pub with only 18 settings and no hint of the normal Indian restaurant atmosphere. The food. however, was as good as any Indian meal I have had in a long time. Some interesting dishes, well presented and served with a smile. A genuine pleasure. The meal itself was 5 star. Only the decor stops it getting the full overall mark from me.

Great to find the Victoria Spice finally open again. You would not believe how good the food can be at a small 14 seat restaurant at the back of a small pub. I ate here several times a few years ago and always thought it was the best Indian food I had ever had. So glad to be able to say that the quality is still the same. Although there are some standard dishes, there are many more you will not have heard of and all are cooked fresh to order. If you are in or near Alston and enjoy Indian food, do not miss this. Superb.

The dishes were colourful, well presented and very tasty ! The restaurant has had a spruce up and was bright and comfortable. Service was good and prompt. I would recommend a visit or two!
