Viceroy Derby in Derby

Visited on a Friday evening with a friend, from walking through the door until we left the staff were warm, friendly and helpful. I can honestly say that the food was possibly the best Indian food I have ever eaten. I can't recommend this restaurant enough.

Food was good, service by the staff was amazing as nothing was too much trouble, they catered for everything we asked for. Disappointed in that we had a wedding tea party which was pitched to us as a high end experience by the manager over and over again. On the day we were promised to deliver particular trays with glasses which were non existent. Luckily I didn’t rely on it and bought it from home as a back up. The tea was served in some cheap cold drink cups that were too big and were only half filled (not the best look) The idea of not getting what you paid for and the response from the manager wasn’t great. Although we settled thanked the team and left. Wouldn’t be arranging anything here for the future, clear differences in what a good high end experience looks like…!! Wouldn’t have an issue if it wasn’t pitched as high end. That being said staff on the day were brilliant.

Great authentic Indian food. Our server, Jay, has excellent customer service and made the whole restaurant experience more enjoyable which is one of the reasons why we keep coming back!

Thursday Special at £20pp, food absolutely gorgeous and freshly cooked/prepared. Only grumble is that I did feel slightly rushed when ordering my food. But overall our waiter was friendly and funny. Actually felt welcomed when I arrived up until I left.

Pre- booked a table for 9 and had excellent service from start to finish. The meals were lovely, good portion sizes, and the best chicken korma ever! Kaleb and his colleague looked after us well

Absolutely couldn't fault the whole experience here. We were made very welcome right from the moment we entered, drinks were reasonably priced at the bar, the seating was comfortable and when we were shown to the table the area was classy, it was modern and felt airy and spacious. The service was very attentive, suggestions were made for those who were not as confident ordering from such an authentic and varied menu. The restaurant was very clean and the table was impeccably laid out. The pickles tray and papadum starters were fresh and extremely tasty, very generous quantities and presented beautifully. The starters were generous in portion size, hot and absolutely delicious. The salad garnish and dressings were fresh and added another level of taste to the dish and were not just there for decoration. The curry main dishes were absolutely steaming hot, a good sized portion which was absolutely packed with tender chicken or lamb., the size of pilau and naan breads were absolutely some of the best fluffy rice and flavoursome breads I've ever tasted. The quality was outstanding for the price. The service and attention to clearing away was extremely efficient and friendly. It was a lovely gesture to have received a cake with a candle for the birthday girl (myself) and even down to the little chocolate at the end, there was nothing too much trouble. Even as a group of 9 we were made to feel very welcome and all of the food came out very quickly together on each course. Everyone commented how wonderful it all was and we would be happy to return again soon. Special mention goes to Kallum, our server who made us feel so very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you so much for making this a night to remember, for all of the right reasons. When there are many choices for this type of meal out, it can be a minefield knowing where to go but I can reliably say that this restaurant delivers fabulous quality and service at a wonderful price...and no they didn't pay me to write this!

Was seated immediately next to a large group but that didn't impact on the service which was, as always, perfect here. Mandatory poppadums to start. The hot chilli fish for starter was perfctly spiced (hot, but not too hot, and perfectlt sweet & sour) and chicken chetinnadi for main with vegetable fried rice which has a superb combination of large pieces of vegetable.

Arrived and not friendly very dissappointed as it was a special occasion don’t normally like to be negative but certainly not the best Indian restaurant in derby . No apologies

We were a large group at the viceroy on a Tuesday evening and the staff could not do more for us! They were extremely accommodating and the service and food were exceptional. Kalam was particularly fantastic and made sure we were well serviced and wanted for nothing.

Came to visit for work. I mean, it’s ok, as long as you remove the creepy intense guy with a pencil line beard. Lovely punjabi waitress saw to it I was well catered for and needed no interruption from him. I learned that the manager takes all the tips and the staff get nothing. This is disgusting if true and the manager should be named and shamed. If I knew this was the case before I arrived there’s no way I would’ve eaten here, not least the tip I would’ve given would’ve been in cash and under the table so the actual waiter got the tip. I’m leaving a review purely because I want to and not because I was ushered to desperately from the guy with the pencil line beard (I do remember his name, but would rather not name specifically) Place was very nice well kept and the service I received from the Punjabi waitress and as a whole was fantastic! (I’ll try to keep up my learning of Hindi, thank you for my lessons!) Curry was very average and very expensive especially for the dodgy area the restaurant is in. I was on my own; one drink, curry, rice and naan came to 30 quid. That’s pricey even for London. Will I come here again? No, I’ll go the pub up the road next time I think. Lots of potential, just not quite perfect.

Ordered a takeaway last Friday,14th feb, placed the order at 8.50pm , by 10.30 there was still no sign of the delivery, we phoned and were told that it would be with us in 15mins the driver was leaving straight away, it’s a exactly 15min drive to the viceroy . 10.50 still no food phoned again said it’s on the way it would be 5 mins , still on the phone at 23.10. Tried asking for a refund as we had gone past the point of being hungry, was told that wasn’t possible till Monday , kept repeating hot fresh food was on the way , 2hrs and 20 mins after ordering. Was then told it was acceptable in the uk to wait two hours for a meal(not in any place I have eaten is that classed as acceptable) , person we spoke to was rude and arrogant, we order from the viceroy once a week , but after this episode and two bad previous experiences we won’t be coming back , also didn’t realise that back in November they had 1 star hygiene rating, this place is going down hill fast . Late food and food missing out together with poor attitude towards customers. Avoid !

Been in the past and had no trouble. Went last night. I've been sick as a dog all day. They were advertising the 20pp but then gave a completely different menu and said they were not doing that. Brought out the wrong starter, and tried to tell us to just have that, explain it wasn't what I asked for. Then came out with the correct one and my prawns were still raw and blue. They were not apologetic about it, waited ages for drinks. The main was cold. The service wasn't great they. Absolutely awful experience

Ordered food online at 8.50 pm , 11pm still no food, phoned at 10.30 pm was told it would be15 mins , phoned at 10.45 said it would be 5 mins , 11pm still no food . Asked for a refund was told it wasn’t possible until Monday ,this is probably the third or fourth time we’ve had missed orders or late deliveries, was told next time we can have a free meal , this won’t be happening as the attitude from man on phone was very unhelpful, blatant lies being told , definitely won’t be ordering anything from the viceroy again , terrible customer service .

Did the 20 pound meal deal was good value . The food was 50/50 some would be really nice and then I’d get served the wrong and burnt naan bread . We asked for the bill 5 times before we got it . Service and food wait times is so slow . Kept getting told to “relax and enjoy my evening and not rush the bill” it was like they wanted to delay so we would spend more . Just wanted to leave . Also if you like personal space you wouldnt like this , they open every door for you, tuck you in , put a napkin on your lap . Bit too formal for me . And also polish your plates in front of you before serving and yet still served me a dirty plate

We came here for my son’s 21st birthday. Food was amazing, tasty well presented and staff were very attentive to our needs. They even bought a dessert out for my son and sang happy birthday. Will definitely eat here again. Highly recommend. 😀👌

90 minutes spent at the table with no food in sight apart from 4 popadoms and dips which were taken away within 10 minutes. After waiting for so long we complained and the food came out all be it with no explanation why it took so long.

I was part of a group of 14 people on a very busy night for the restaurant. The service and friendly attitude of the staff was excellent. We were not rushed in any way like some other restaurants tend to do. The food was also excellent. In my opinion the best curry restaurant in Derby. Looking forward to returning soon

Attended a Christmas party. The staff were friendly. Food quality and taste was good. Starter platter was huge. Mains were tasty and they kept bringing food all the time. There was plenty of time between starters and mains for people to relax, socialise and enjoy.

On a business trip to Derby, the Viceroy was recommended to me. Incredible food, last time I ate Indian food that good was in Rajasthan in 1996. Kalam was an excellent waiter, very professional and attentive, an asset to the company.

Evening set dinner was £20 and the food was plentiful, delicious too. There was enough left over for the next evening.

We went here on our daughter's birthday. Food was lush and presentation was amazing. Great staff with welcoming smile and fast service. Definitely recommend to those who haven't tried yet. You will not be disappointed with the taste of food.

I normally do not write reviews, but in this case I wanted to! Excellent dinner with an Indian colleague at the Viceroy! The chicken was as tender as it can be, the spices perfect, the green chillies a hit and Jay and the other staff looked after our every need. Would definitely come here again.

Attended for my nephews 30th so we were in a large group, but all of our food came out together, all hot and absolutely delicious! Menu clearly states which dishes have dairy in which is always helpful for me. Jay was brilliant! He took the large order without a fuss and ensured we all had what we needed.

We had a lovely 4 course meal at the Viceroy. All the dishes were scrummy and flavoursome! The staff were extremely professional and welcoming. We had a lovely meal out at the viceroy, the best curry we have had in a long time. The food was 10/10 and Jay was so accommodating to our party and really went the extra mile to look after us and make sure we had everything we needed, will most definitely be returning, and recommending! X

Never, never order from here direct. Place an order at 6.30 it's now 8 30 and still no food. We love this place to eat in but, it cannot be that difficult to deliver an order within 2 hours. I will never order again for delivery

Previously they provide good food and services but I think chef change noore food tasty and previously they use to give papodam and chutney as complementary but now they stopped doing that as well. I recommend don't go there better find some other restaurants for food. I think management got changed and chef also changed.

Delivery is a Joke. I ordered from here a few months back and had the worst experience. It was over 1 hour 45 minutes late and arrived stone cold. I must have called 6 times to chase, and was told each time it will be 15 minutes. Half an hour went by, and I called again. To be told the same thing. "Another 15 minutes". This went on for almost 2 hours. I gave them the benefit of the Doubt, and decided to order from here again this evening. Suprise suprise, it happend again... I even pre ordered at 18:30 to ensure it arrived on time. At 20:40 I had still not received the order. They just LIE and tell you the drivers on their way. Don't bother ordering online, there are plenty other Indians that will deliver you a curry in a reasonable time. Scroll past, there an absolute joke.

Rang for a refund and all they wanted to offer was bring the food again.. haha like I will let you spit in my food.. no thanks. I ordered food to be delivered through a well known delivery service online. The arrival of the food was timely. The food was tasty but the only reason it got 4 stars is that is was not very hot and my expectation was that it needed to be warmer as it arrived.

All round lovely place, the food is beautifully cooked, the front of house staff are lovely but the issue I had tonight is I asked three times does a certain dish contain nuts? which was responded with a "no, we don't handle nuts in this restaurant" whilst I started eating this chef's special, I started to feel like I was getting an allergic reaction. I then asked the waiter again, does this definitely not contain any nuts? Which he said no. So I started to dig in more into my meal. He then came back 5 minutes later and said I'm sorry but this dish contains cashew nuts. At that point I panicked and my brother had to rush me to the hospital. I am going to assume, There must of been a miscommunication between the chefs and front of house staff. I feel this needs to be looked into more, as both front of house and back of house should know the vital information if certain dishes may contain a common food allergy. Luckily I'm alright now. But if that was someone else it could have been a lot worse! We came here for my Dad's 60th birthday and I feel like it's been ruined unfortunately. Careful with this place if you have allergies!

The best tikka masala we have ever had! Stopped in the restaurant for a late dinner and the food did not disappoint. The service was amazing from all the staff and the pricing of the meals was great!

The garlic chicken curry is exquisite, the chicken full of flavour that I enjoyed in each bite. Would definitely recommend coming here and ask for the curry desi style of which was accommodated by the lovely welcoming staff at this restaurant. Also this is the first Indian resteraunt which I have been to that had more than 3 different sauces for the poppadoms as we were given 7 different ones which complimented each other.. Would recommend for all parties to attend!

In my opinion, by far the nicest Indian restaurant in Derby. The food doesn't just taste of spice and nothing else - you can taste the individual ingredients without any overbearing the others. The price is more than reasonable and although I have only used their takeaway service, the inside of the restaurant looks very nice and well taken care of.

We ate here on recommendation of our hotel and it didn’t disappoint. The curries were amazing, served with yoghurt/cuc as standard and the side dishes were also outstanding (mushroom / cauli bajis). We were so impressed by the whole experience we decided to return for another meal on the second night of our stay in Derby - where Eddie took care of us admirably. Highly recommended; around £30 each.

Take aways are always hit and miss - they seem to care more about the money than the quality of the food. The curry and rice arrived cold, naan was over done and the chips were barely cooked. There has been multiple occasions where they have forgotten an item from our order. We’ve been a loyal customer for over 1 year - tonight was the last time we will be ordering from there.

I took a group of sixteen people here last night, the food was excellent! good portions, a large variety to choose from the menu, all food was served together and everyones piping hot. The seafood sizzler was AMAZING! And excellent value for £35 between two people for 6 or 7 types of fish/seafood, naan, chips, salad and curry sauce. There was a good atmosphere as there was decent a number of diners for a Monday night. We'll be back very soon!

Ordered a curry for delivery for the second time, and once again it did not disappoint. Ordered poppadoms with 5 pickles, Chicken Chettinadi, Goan King Prawn Curry, Pilau Rice, and two different Naan Breads. Delivery time was about one hour which was reasonable considering the order was placed at peak evening time. The food was hot, superb, very tasty and plentiful. Will definitely be ordering again.

Came here after Download festival for the ninth year in a row. Absolutely amazing food and great welcome. Fantastic service and great visit all round .Will be back again next year.

Rohan was our waiter and was attentive to our every request. Food was quickly sent to our table, and we was never left thirsty for a drink. We dined for the 4 courses for £20 and I highly recommend as the portion's are perfect and light. Will be back very soon thanks for a great evening.

Been going for over 15 years regular customer takeaway and restaurant. ordered my usual tikka masala takeaway tonight and was like dish water . . very disappointing to be told to deal with it through just eat after compaining it was no where near your usual high standard after spending thousands of pounds through your business through the years i wont be returning very disappointed this is how you treat a loyal regular customer

Not many people eating in, but then again it was a weekday! Food excellent and tasty. Service was very good and nothing was too much trouble re waiting for our order and a free bottle of wine as special offers night. Would definitely visit again. Also do not be put off from the exterior...inside stylish.

The food is wonderful, absolutely no quibles there. However, when we visited the service was absolutely shocking. We actually laughed about it later because it was like being in an episode of Fawlty Towers. I counted two waiters and the owner/manager Ali (Fawlty?). Getting attention was difficult, drinks were missed, we were given prawn curry instead of the duck we ordered though Ali poked it around a bit with a fork and insisted it was duck. It wasn't. They took the prawn curries away and came back with duck after the rest of the part had finished their meal. We asked for the bill twice and nothing arrived so we headed for the door and finally got, you guessed it, someone elses bill! The poor waiter who was passing got it in the neck from Ali for all this but he wasn't involved at all! More parallels with Fawlty Towers :) The final nail in the coffin was when Ali (or was it Basil?) insisted we were all nice people except one of the party who he had taken a dislike to. The really weird thing about all this is that we visited six months ago and the experience was a perfect night out. Never again, there are many other great Indian restaurants nearby.

Ordered delivery 2 hours ago and it’s still not here. Instead fed a load of lies when called the restaurant multiple times.

Our waiter, Jay, was great, helpful, informative, and attentive without being obtrusive. He didn't hover but noticed if we needed drinks or anything else. The food was served in good time and was lovely. The portion sizes were good, We couldn't finish it all. Jay asked if we wanted take away trays, which he bought to the table, then put the meals in them. We will definitely go back to try other dishes.
