Been coming 3 times yearly for 25 yrs.Sadly won't come again.Has Verrill family left the establishment.They would not have served the food we had today Grey thin fish.Sogggy uncooked batter under crisp outside Grease laden chips also underdone.What on earth has gone wrong ??

1st time visiting Verrills after being recommended. Long Que outside, but goes down really quickly as plenty of polite staff serving. The fish and chips were beautiful accompanied by some curry sauce. No card payments excepted. Had to drive around to find a cash point. Next time I’m in Hartlepool i will definitely be back. I would highly recommend. The people alongside me in the Que were all lovely and friendly too.

There was a long queue round the shop and down the street for good reason! Good quality and quantity for the price is great value! It was well worth the wait. The queue isn't because they're slow. Far from it! A brilliant local chippy. Shame its not my local

Queue at 17:15 on Friday, out of peas by then. Local favorite, apparently. Scraps are leftover bits of batter.

This is the best chippy in the country by far. No question. The queue is regularly half way down the street. How often do you see that?

Called in just after 1pm , I had cod and chips. Service was quick , no queue when I went. It's cash only , no cards. The chips were very greasy but the cod was delicious, at £10.10p for fish and chips so it should be.

Delicious fish and chips served here closed at 1.15

Back to being the best Fish & Chips. Far better than the Magpie at Whitby. Cash only though. What's that all about these days? HMRC

Food absolutely vile! Over cooked chips done in oil that tastes like it is weeks old. Battered sausage was just pure mush. Whole thing unedible!! Whole hated hated!

Best Fish and Chips I have ever tasted. White fish, beautiful light crisp batter and perfect chips. All had different sizes and combinations. All fantastic!! Live in Leeds where they have the worst fish and chips in the country!! This felt like the best meal for a long time

Arrived around midday on Saturday but queue moved really quickly. Service war polite and efficient food was fabulous - generous portions and lovely Haddock and Chips x 2!

Proper old school fish and chips. Big portions of really tasty food. Had to queue but quick service. Window round the side of chippy for a tasty ice-cream to finish.

We were recommended Verrills by some friends, so called as we were only 10 mins away. We parked just behind the chippy there was loads of space. When we got there we saw a queue of about 4 people outside and maybe 8 inside. The queue when down very quickly and the service was excellent. We got our fish chips and mushy peas and sat in the little park over the road to eat them, as many others were doing. The fish was massive, thick and fresh with lovely crispy batter, the chips were scrummy and not greasy, and proper mushy peas, and lovely scraps. I would happily drive 30 mins from home to go there.

Have been trying to get a fish from here for ages, but have always been thwarted by work hours and their opening time..Not today! Finally got in to see what all the fuss was about and was not disappointed. Huge fish (might have been a small whale) and delicious old fashioned style chips. Absolutely delicious and very filling. Best I've had in Hartlepool by far. Regular visitors now and never disappointed.

Born and Bred in Hartlepool some seventy years ago we always remembered Verrills as the place to go for really good Fish and Chips after a good day out at the nearby "Fish Sands Beach". Although that was half a lifetime ago we did look forward to re-acquainting ourselves with Verrills last Saturday when the sight of the long que stretching out along the pavement did bode of good things to come. However, what a disappointment. The best way to judge our Fish and Chips would be to give each component individual marks out of ten, so here goes. I watched in dismay as my quite large piece of Fish was was lifted out of the frying pan, placed on the "display ?" shelf and immediately placed, visually dripping with Fat/Oil on top of the Chips already waiting in the "take away tray". I should have objected there and then, but the shop was packed with many "first name termed" customers so I didn't. (My Mistake). We retired to the nearby Croft Gardens with some apprehension to sample our first Verrills offering for some years. Marks out of ten. The Fish. 6/10 (Soaking Wet Batter, Quite Large Portion.) The Chips. 3/10 ( Overcooked, Very Soggy, Sweet Tasting indicating a change of Oil/Fat long overdue, lots of small scrappy bits. The mark of three awarded to the Chips is only given only as their sustenance value to a starving person. Very, very disappointed.

I've heard about Verrills for years from people I've worked alongside from Hartlepool. As I'm from the Boro me and my good mate went there to try them for ourselves we both had cod and chips with mushy peas .And after tasting them we both strongly agreed they are the best we both have ever tasted .in fact we both went back the following week for the same and can't wait for the next time. Absolutely delicious 😋

Well, we were in the area, had heard about verrils many years ago, actually went. Lunchtime and it was rammed, but a fast moving queue, staff were all over it. We got fish and chips to share, and I got a battered sausage. The sausage wasn't needed as the fish was essentially a whale. SOOO BIG, so delicious. Was absolutely out of this world.

Huge fish portions, freshly cooked with crisp batter. Chips not crisp enough for my liking but very tasty.

Best Fish and Chips we have had in a long time with a batter recipe that reminded me of my childhood days at the seaside at Old Hartlepool. All five of us thoroughly enjoyed our fish and chips and thought that the portion sizes were well worth what paid but all of us would’ve preferred to be able to use contactless payment rather than cash only.

We walked just over 3 miles from the marina side as we had read good reviews about this chippy and we really fancied fish and chips by the sea. During the walk we didn't pass another person, but turning the final corner we were greeted by a line of people queuing down the pavement! The queue moved very quickly as the staffed worked very efficiently. I have to say it was worth the walk and wait as the fish and chips were fantastic and the fish was a really good size.

Very friendly staff. update we went last Saturday Febuary, 2024. the fishbl was tasteless with soggy batter and cold chips. fish patty had never seen a fish. disgusting. wont be hoing for a while now its put me right off. I dont know if its changed owners. but something is not right.

Great fish and chips and lemon top ice cream you can get full lot or half lot 6 of us in today still best fish and chips in hartlepool prices are also very reasonable choice of food is very good also now do tea and coffee to take out would highly recommend to all

Went here with family on a cold winter's day after not visiting for a lot of years and my Auntie ordered me a portion of fish and chips. Little did I know that she'd ordered me a large portion so a small whale turned up. Looking at the menu, I thought £9.50 was a bit expensive at first but, now I've had them, I will be back for another portion at some point. The fish was so big that I had to eat a decent chunk of it before I even got to the chips. The fish was a perfectly cooked but thick fillet of cod which just flaked apart whilst the batter was thick and crispy (borderline crunchy to be honest). The chips were soft and so tasty. Well worth a visit if you're in the area and I'll be thinking up excuses to make the trip up to the headland especially.

Awful, greasy fish and chips. Used to be so good, definitely not any longer. Chips were brown, poor quality, so greasy and no taste. Really gone down in my opinion.

Took the dog for a walk and then decided to pop in the fish shop for some dinner absolutely first class nice and hot and not reheated over and over again like some fish shops would definitely recommend to all

Not local to this part of the country but received a recommendation to visit Verrills. Arrived at 12 noon and there was a queue out of the door. Plenty of staff serving and our order was taken and paid for. We had to wait for our fish which was freshly cooked, and took up the offer of 'scraps' to accompany our fish and chips. Beautiful thick white cod perfectly cooked was enjoyed sitting nearby at the headland. Chips were a little bit small but we're well cooked. Very enjoyable

The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. I had take out fish and chips in a box, both were delicious. There is ample nearby parking, well worth a visit and I will be back!

My father started using Verrills in the 1930s. He returned for a visit about 15 years ago and they are as good now as they ever have been. We visit every year when in the area and we wouldn’t go to any other chippy. Excellent food, great price. I wish we could get fish and chips like this in the Midlands.

Often get out half lots and drive over to the promenade to eat them.

Lovely large portion of fish and chips (£9.10 Dec 2022). The fish was large and moist. The chips were chrispy and plentiful. Best of all there was a large queue outside when I left. I went on a cold bitter December day to watch the football. The chippie is around a mile from Hartlepool United's ground.

Food is hit or miss and today was another miss. Chips were very very greasy I three everything away.

Lovely tasty fish and chips. Good portion size and freshly cooked. They didn't have all the items we wanted so it may be better to go earlier rather than later. There were queues so you need to be patient. It is nice to sit by the sea to eat them as a special treat. Definitely worth a visit.
