The Almighty Cod in Hartlepool

Orderd a sausage and chips for my son night time very quiet. waited 20 minutes to be cooked there hadn't even put a sausage in terrible service must of been at least 5 staff plus the server sat gabbing terrible service and coms asked for a refund in the end shocking place now .use to be good not even a apology

The Cod was Large and delicious but expensive

First favourable impression is the venue decor. Then the cleanliness. The toilets are also amazingly clean. The waitress is most friendly and the service is excellent. The cod, which is so white and fresh, is encased in perfect batter. The presentation of the meal adds to the experience and the portions are LARGE. We travel a 40+ mile round journey and it is the highlight of each month. Roll on our next visit. Thank you Howard, Ann & Rebecca

Great food but slow service with 2 servers serving one person Combined at a time made a queue of 10 people wait nearly 30 mins. Cannot fault the cleanliness or quality of the food as this was spot on.

I live in Inverness but visit family in Seaham, I have travelled all around the country including Cornwall and you cannot get better than this fish and chips for taste, value for money and fabulous staff cannot wait to see you all again later in the year .

Terrible Value For Money Never Had Such A Portion Of Fish Which Was So Expensive And So Small £8.00. For A Large Fish Which Was No Bigger Than A Mackrell Fillet. A Portion of Fish From Anywhere Else I Believe Would Be Classed As Small or Possibly Regular but Never Large The Fish Itself Could Not Have Been Any Bigger Than 350gr in Weight but was covered in Thick Batter which was approximately 500gr. Cannot & Would Not Recommend.

Great food at a good price, cooked fresh and could not fault anything, we ate in next door to the take away, bought cod and chips twice with drinks and came in under thirty quid.

Disgusting food. The patty was cold inside and the batter was not light and crispy but thick and stodgy. The girl then flooded the peas with salt so they were inedible.The batter on the fish was not properly cooked and the fish inside was brown. We were travelling and could not return as in a rush, but to be honest we should have taken the food back it was so bad. A waste of £10.00 to be honest. I would not recommend buying food here

Usually our regular but the last couple of visits have been extremely poor. Went to try again and it was worse. Chips like thin scraps. Over cooked fish that was small and thin. Very disappointing and not cheap. I don't believe in posting reviews without speaking to the owners first so I messaged directly to be completely ignored. Extremely poor customer service and obviously not bothered about keeping their regulars. Will avoid in future

Ordered large cod & chips twice. The cod filled the box. The batter was light and crispy, the cod was cooked to perfection, it wasn't chewy and was very filling. The staff were attentive and pleasant and found it no issue for more condiments. Best fish & chips I've had in a long time.

I've used the take away. After queing for 45min (at least) I can say that it worth the wait. It is the best fish&chips I've aet in 9 years since I am in the UK. Definetlly recommended.

Ordered three fish & chips at about 6.00 pm Friday 17th May cost £35.05 was not impressed fish was dry tasted like it had been cooked earlier and the chips were tasteless and scrappy wouldn't go there again

Best cod we have eaten but let down with no bread and butter instead they serve a taco no no no Tatar sauce delicious but food was served on rectangular plates which meant food was falling off we prefer round white plates which would make food look even tastier nice interior

I really can't understand the recent poor reviews. Have been coming here for years and the standard has never changed. High quality, locally caught tasty fish, cracking chips (not greasy) and very friendly staff. Yes there are queues due to the fact of it being so popular, and like all other fish and chip shops prices have had to rise, however for me, Almighty Cod is still the best in the North East.

What has happened to the Almighty Cod? This used to be the best fish& chip shop by far, but this past year it has gone back and back. We won't be visiting again. The fish was really tasteless, the batter wasn't crisp, it was really bland and soggy and looked pale and unappealing. They had a winning formula, so I'm not sure what's gone wrong or if it's under new management, but really, so bad and very disappointing. And all for £23, for 2 fish, 1 x chips, 1 x peas and a bread bun! Save your money and avoid, there must be better options locally?

The Almighty Cod is a lovely place to visit. It has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff are friendly and efficient. As for the food, the fish and chips are lovely and cooked perfectly. I would certainly recommend visitors to Seaton Carew to try the Almighty Cod, they will not be disappointed.

Old chios and need to be taught how to make decant batter, worst I've ever tasted.

Nice food the batter on the cod was nice crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside. Asked of they sold cod bites to be told they sold a small fish even though cod bites were on the menu which I didn't get

A lovely little resteraunt that serves both eat ins and take outs. This is our normal place to go when visiting Seaton, but the last time we were there, we noticed a member of staff was a little less friendly and rather rude when talking to customers and staff.

Amazing patties! Always have to get them when in the area. Very helpful staff who boxed up several patties for my wife's Mom to bring back to the West Midlands for us last week. Best chippy in Seaton.

We travel from Inverness regularly to Seaham to see our boys tried loads of fish shops but nothing compares to this place it's fabulous fish worth the travel been using it for at least ten years just don't go at 12 to 12-30 mega que . The quality and quantity is just amazing and it's every time never been disappointed yet keep going Almighty Cod.

Fancied a ride out from Sedgefield - a walk along the sea front and some fish & chips , by chance we selected The Almighty Cod , best thing we did - they were excellent, I asked for large cod & chips I could hardly close the tray. Will definitely visit again.

The batter has changed as it was flat and abit soggy. The fish was also dry.

Well the chips were quite tasty but far too much batter on the fish, didn't use to be like this, waiting time when only a few people in the shop seems to be longer but the end result is not getting any better. All this for £10 a head.Definitely gone downhill as of late. Maybe look across the road.

I have regularly used The Almighty Cod for years, both sit in and take away and never been disappointed until now. The cod was grey and dry , the batter too heavy and overcooked. It was like a different product, so much so I thought it was under new ownership. I don’t know what went wrong but I doubt I’ll be back if standards have slipped that much.

Almighty disappointed … visited on a wet Friday at 14.57 for a fish & chip takeaway for two. I choose the establishment on the basis of other positive reviews. Unfortunately my experience was one of quantity over quality. The pros were quantity if that’s important to you, tasty/hot curry sauce & clean chips. The cons were that the f&c lacked any freshness/crispness, the batter was too thick/chewy and the fish fillet was dense lacking any lightness/flakiness. I personally feel this was because the fish & chips had simply stood too long since cooked. My recommendation to the proprietor would be to cook to order when the shop is quiet. When customers pay £10 a person for a takeaway they deserve better. After all if you’re after fast food there are plenty of cheaper alternatives.

Found this little gem next door to the Might Cod takeaway it’s part of the Fish n chop shop. Friendly staff and amazing fish and chips, well worth the money!

Excellent value for money and great food. Staff are an asset to the business. The best cocktails in town from very knowledgeable mixologists.

I wish we had takeaway instead as that's always lovely. Instead we went sat down. It seemed we were waiting for ever to get the food we ordered . When it arrived the fish was only warm as if left on a plate the batter was soggy fish was gray inside chips seemed only half cooked .Will not eat again in restaurant .we have since started using chip shop just over the road and cannot fault it .

Be careful when you order food here. I ordered 2 small cod, small chips and a small tub of curry sauce. I was told that they didn't have any small cod, only large but they could split one. Fair enough, except when it came to payment, I was charged for 2 small cod instead of 1 large! Had I not already worked out what I should have been charged and just accepted what the young girl behind the counter said, I'd have been overcharged by 60p. Be careful. Don't just take it for granted that they're charging you the right amount.

Used to be really good when the restaurant part was open. We tried for fist time in fish shop part wasn't the same. Just one young lass serving. Miss what it used to be like. Fish really nice chips ok.

Fish and chip shop on the seafront. The portions were good but they did not have all the options on their menu. Fish and chip were ok but not outstanding the corn beef patty was not something we would ever order again.

Avoiding like the plague moving forward. Been coming for 5 years often and tonight has seriously annoyed me to a point where I won’t be back. Teach your servers to not stand off with customers in a shop when they ask for something that is right there in front of them but you say no because someone from the restaurant might order it. Asking me to pay an additional £5 for food that won’t be eaten? No. It’s not acceptable. Thanks for ruining my last night with my partner for a while and also the only food I have looked forward to since becoming very sick. You might be able to speak to the tourists that way and get away with it but not the locals who see you through winter. Get a clue about business and customer service. To think we queued for 30 minutes because you took an age to serve 5 people in front was also pretty appalling and never worth the wait again.

Absolutely vile, fish smells weird and has like bleach/chemicals smell, also theres a pool of grease in the tray which I've never seen when served fish and chips... this is actually the second time this has happened too. Wont be returning

I odered 2 large chips from the take away and I thought the girl had not heard me .she said what i got was large. I swear there was about 15 chips. I should have taken a picture. I know there is a cost of living crisis but when the chippy starts to skimp on the amount of chip you are give it's really bad.

Food really tasty but service shocking no more than 16 people eating including us the fish and chips come from next door but waited over 40 mins from placing order to receiveing it then ask for a bowl of scraps the waitress went to get them but never returned maybe went on a bad day

The Almighty Cod is my favourite Fish and Chip shop in Seaton. The chips are not greasy and the Fish is beautifully flaky with a lovely batter. Quite often there is a very large queue outside (as there should be with all good chip shops) but I assure you it is worth the wait. You can ring an order ahead too to save some time. A fantastic vast menu with lots of special items too (battered Mars Bar, Halloumi Fries and a great selection of homemade brownies) If you've not been here before I urge you to give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Didn't really enjoy food, chips were like scaps, bottom of the barrel. Fish was nice but son didn't enjoy chicken bites. One person serving yet plenty of others behind counter. Stood for ages yet only 2 in front of us. Atmosphere was not the best. Very disappointed 😞
