Venus Fish Bar in Stoke-on-Trent

We found ourselves here desperate for food after a long day enjoying the fabulous Alton Towers fireworks. The fish was excellent and the chips were good (though a little large for our tastes). Service was friendly and welcoming. Plaice (ahem) is cash only but conveniently they also have a cash machine offering free withdrawals. Incidentally whilst we were there two people dropped their food all over the floor. We were beginning to suspect it was some sort of local custom. Whatever, it provided entertainment whilst we dined in.

I buy food from here 3-4 days/week . Highly recommended 👌

Food is ok, service can be a bit hit n miss, not really had a smile or had much conversation with the staff. They keep themselves to themselves.

I won’t go anywhere else for chip shop! Staff are great and food always good! Portions are a little on small side but quality makes up for it😊 atmosphere is lower just for outside lingering people that make you feel uncomfortable at times

Without a doubt the BEST Fish & Chip shop in Hanley. The chips are fabulous, thick and crispy, fluffy inside. The fish is delicious and cooked to perfection. The bar also offers many other types of food on its menu including Gyros and kebabs and salads (Slads 🤣) . The prices are in keeping with other such venues. The staff are lovely and there is also plenty of room to eat inside the shop. A great asset to Hanley 👍👍🎏

Had food there last night the chips were awful greasy ... which is surprising as previously the food was good.? Really disappointed

Very good portions, great value, brilliant service. Parking available and plenty of seating.

I've noticed a trend where the quality of fish and chips is going down nationwide, but this was where I'd had my chips, perhaps for the last time...huge chips (always a bad sign because they don't always cook well in the middle) with skins on (yeuch), and mostly hard inside. Threw most of them away. That said though, the curry sauce was great, the premises were clean and service good.

When I visited this shop it was very busy but they had lots of staff on so service was quick. I had donor meat and chips the portion was massive and the chips were cooked perfect and the donor meat was very tasty, you have a choice of sauces and they have a few tables where you can eat your food.

Beautifully cooked fish and chips. The chicken wings were very good, slight peppery flavour to the coating. Comfortable seating, very clean and the staff were chatty and very friendly. Parking right outside which is useful as it is near a,very busy roundabout.

We ordered fish and chips, the chips were fine but the fish did not look clean and it still had the skin on which i haveng seen before when i went here the last time and i definitely wasted my money on that fish because it did not have any taste and it did not look appealing to eat so i threw it away

First few times I went were great but the standards seem to be slipping ever so slowly... This used to be my go to place... Hoping it's just a coincidence that the last few times have not been the best and food gets back to the standard it once was.

Good fastfood, offers a good amount of fried foods and side dishes with drinks. Good to feed yourself after a few beers. A little dirt on the tables doesn't make me give more stars to the environment, but the food was good. Chicken cooked well and sausages always hot. Excellent homemade potatoes with salt and vinegar, typical English.

Absolutely delicious food. The fish and chips was cooked to perfection, golden and crispy, flakey on the inside. The portions are generous. The staff is upbeat and friendly. As an American, I found it to be a real gem. Seemed they had loads of other delicious options too. I look forward to trying them.

Well under principle I write this …I felt like I was robbed by woman serving the order wasn’t what I asked and she charged more I said I didn’t want that she more or less said I had to have that as others won’t like lemon on ….what happened to the customer is always right! Didn’t taste bad although greasy so watch your change I won’t be going there again

Fast mooving ques, fast service

First of all, the person serving my mum couldn't even get our order correct. A small fish when she asked for a large fish, and a small peas when she asked for a large peas. Luckily the rest of the order was correct, just a shame that the fish was cold, the peas were cold and very obviously watered down with probably water and you could taste vinegar in them too. The gravy wasn't very nice, the chips and fishcake were okay, but I wouldn't recommend. Update from 8th May 2024: Usual chippy is closed so ended up going this one. Honestly barely worth it. The chips are nice, the fish has the skin on it (underneath the batter) which isn't to my personal preference but still can eat it. Fish just kinda tastes bland. And the mushy peas, oh my gosh the mushy peas🤢 they are just pure water, not at all appetizing to look at, smelt off and just not what you expect when you ask for mushy peas.

This place has gone down hill prices gone stupid and the size of the portions have gone ridiculously small avoid, need some competition in the area.

Curry and chips gone up by 50 p,going by how many you get a bag of spuds must have gone up 50 quid and Curry sauce was like water,I think they have lost my custom,hurry up and open old mother Hubbards

Just a passing visit, but very nice,a mixed naan bread, plenty for your money, very nice

40 minutes I had to wait, then she put a cod on for me , which took about 20 minutes more, she was trying to fob me off with a haddock, I insisted I wanted cod, she wasn't happy about that Bad attitude, told them the service was really bad and they were grinning at me. My opinion, the staff will bring that business down in the future, by the way food was really bad , I don't how they get away with it, burned chips and the fish was raw, , the mother daughter and duo, its really bad staff, they think they own the place, if you think this food is good, then you definitely not been good food places, never going anywhere near that place.

I have been using this Chippy for more years than I care to remember food as always been great wide choice of menu very clean and great staff. I have never had to complain about the food. I would say that Venus is one of the best in Stoke-on-Trent and I have been in a few as I have lived in Stoke-on-Trent all my life and am now 74 young now. So keep up the good work gang.

Very popular place . Busy at times . Cash only . Used afew times . Always plenty of chips. Good valve for money. We had two sausage and chips curry sauce. Staff always friendly. Recommended

Worst chippy ever! £21 for 2 mixed meat kebabs, we had one piece of donner and a small quantity of some bland chicken meat, wrapped up in a "naan" which was just a wrap that was cooked so hard I could have knocked some sense into the woman serving us, who was a few pennies short to say the least

Food and value is good but the one negative is that if you order online it says come in 15 minutes, 3 times I've given it 25-30 and all 3 times they don't actually start the order until you get there, so you're awaiting another 5-10 minutes. They should make it clear on the app that it won't be ready until they start the order when you get there. Thats the only poor point, so be prepared for that. Other than that it's nice food and the value is good.

Quality of potato is probably one of the best in stoke-on-trent.

Excellent,well cooked food at a reasonable price ruined by the ridiculously slow service in spite of their being numerous young ladies serving. At least 50% of the time when I go to Venus for food I leave before getting served due to the excessive wait and end up eatinh elsewhere.

Always busy but the staff work as quick as they can to get everyone served as quickly as possible, because it's so busy the food is always freshly cooked & nothing stands for to long

Ordered a meat box had from here before but tonight meat hard burnt , chips bad bits and tomato relish taste like vingar been added, onion rings greasy and burnt batter , battered sausage overdone burnt ends the meal was totally disgusting , if traffic wasn’t so bad I would of took it back and got a refund , I totally understand why it’s cash only so you can’t get your money back notice you don’t get contact if you leave negative review, neither do you get a courtesy text back ,, this place takes your money, and doesn’t give a dam about it customers. Perhaps a requalar visit from the food hygiene or council may sought this out in the near future

Our fish and chips were absolutely inedible,the worst food I have ever purchased from a chippy,fish and chips both nearly cold and I only had to go I street away I think they cook too much at one time ,I can't wait for the Vicky road one to open,I have used this chippy for years but feel as I have just thrown a tenner away,most gone in the bin

One of the most clean place around. I use to get delivery of whole sale as part of cash&carry business. Been on back of many kebab shops, pizza shops and fish and chips. This one one of most clean ones. So when had to buy some fast food if not too far always collect from this place. Food fresh and cheaps not frozen and fries, it's done from fresh potatoes that day. Inside there sit and eat tables as well. Really nice place, recommend to visit.

Chips consistently very good and enjoyed by all. Pies sometimes not as warm but pukka. Chicken and chips loved by one daughter. Kebab chicken tikka my sons fave, tender and crisp outside goes brilliant with mayo and very generous portions. Family that runs v friendly, aided by variety of extras as so popular. Guaranteed nice meal.

Bought a double cheeseburger today and it was that badly cooked it was rock hard and taste very bad other than that the chips are good

I'd AVOID if you don't want to waste money or food.. This place Very Nasty and a pure Waste of Money ADVICED NOT TO BOTHER .. Chips are hard, dry and have eye's and bits of pealing left on them.. And chips are always re-warmed the next day wich makes chewing them feel like plastic chips. No good for people with false teeth. STAFF are rude they chat to each other about their customers treat their customers with disrespect.. The dinning area is always filthy.. Anything you order they've never got available. They can't cook right it's why they never give out a receit. So there is no refunds available...

I love this place. Everything is Halal first of all. They literally prepare their food in 2 seconds in front of you. The food is really delicious and always Piping hot.
