Had a super casual meal in the new Allamby’s Brasserie. The food was delicious and the menu had plenty of choices. I enjoyed the Prawn & Avocado starter, Seabass in Lemon Butter for main course and the Spiced Apple Tart Tatin. The staff were friendly and efficient too. Great choice for a meal out whether you are a golf club member or not.

We visited for a Sunday roast dinner and the whole experience was great. The beef sirloin is highly recommended, I can’t remember the last time I had beef so tender and tasty. A good size roast dinner at a very reasonable price. The atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant and the service is second to none. Jamie on reception, Henry at the bar and Stuart the restaurant manager were all so helpful and attentive. We will definitely be visiting again soon!

Booked early an evening meal on Sunday . With 4 friends . Beautiful refurbished decor. The Dining room and bar area is very tasteful. Lack of staff very evident . No one manning bar . Waited to be seated,no greeting from anyone as no staff around . Found a table and then the menus . Eventually a lovely lady came to ask if we were ready to order food. We asked if someone was able to serve drinks first before ordering food ! Meals were ok . Food average . Two meals were cold or just Luke warm . One was returned to be heated up . Lack of gravy for the roast beef meals extra gravy requested a very small jug of gravy brought out to share 3 meals! ,the Yorkshire pudding on each meal was VERY hard and crisp like! Disintegrated on trying to cut it . The three fish dishes were acceptable …..not a particularly great meal experience, considering the venue . Wouldn’t return . Shaw Hill needs to up its game regarding meals. The setting is very lovely

Have a very acceptable early dinner post a great round of golf at Shaw Hill GC, which I would also recommend. The staff on arrival were very pleasant and service was extremely good throughout. Emails in our group included steak n frites, fish and chips and I went for the burger which was huge and came with two patties, bacon, cheese and a couple of crispy onion rings to top it off. Large bun was soft and not at all soggy, which can often be the case. It was served with a substantial portion of skinny fries. The atmosphere was pretty poor as we were the only ones eating but I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and would recommend this place if you are in the area.

We had both an evening meal in the bar restaurant and attended a wake afternoon tea in the formal dining room. The food was good throughout, tasty and excellent quality. Service was poor in the bar (we ended up having to go up ourselves to get menus, drinks, place orders etc when it should have been table service throughout). Not sure if they were just understaffed? The server was pleasant when delivering/taking plates. Staff at the funeral wake were excellent. One frustrating incident was that staff didn’t have a key to open the double doors to let a wheelchair in (we asked multiple people). This needs to be rectified and hopefully already has been; we were able to work around it with difficulty but someone in a motorised scooter, for example, would not.

We returned to our wedding location for a meal to celebrate our 20th anniversary. Recently refurbished Allembys restaurant at Shaw Hill was an absolute gem for what we considered outstanding food, nicely presented with a modern twist. If you are looking for somewhere serving great quality food then I would thoroughly recommend giving Allembys @shaw hill a reservation to discover for yourselves.

We celebrated NYE 2023 at Shaw Hill’s gala dinner. Although the decor is a bit tired and dated, and the drinks were expensive (nearly £10 for a single glass of prosecco, and £32 for a bottle), the evening was really enjoyable. The DJ was great, and we loved the piper at midnight. The food, however, wasn’t good for £60 a head. The single tempura prawn on the starter was cold and the batter soggy. The roast beef for the main was very overdone, yet the accompanying tenderstem broccoli was so undercooked you couldn’t chew it. Some portions disguised this by drowning the whole plate in gravy, and others had barely any. The staff served 6 of the 10 people on our table, and then moved onto serving other tables, so half of us had finished eating by the time the rest of us had our plates. This happened for all three courses. The dessert, apricot bread and butter pudding, was quite frankly inedible. Descriptions on our table ranged from “like sweetened quiche” to “a cubed omelette with slimy fruit chunks”. It came out cold, already deeply submerged in custard. Like the gravy, the amount desired is really subject to taste and it would have been better to have a jug on each table to pour your own. However, when we left at 1am we all agreed the food had been balanced out by the brilliant atmosphere. Fast forward to New Year’s Day - by mid-afternoon, all 10 of us had been taken out by food poisoning. I’ll spare the graphic details of the symptoms, but it was clear that the main course had been to blame as it was the only food we had all eaten most of, and we weren’t drinking that much because of the cost of the alcohol. Today on the 2nd, I'm one of several off sick from work, so the £60pp we paid before drinks, taxis, unpaid sick leave etc no longer feels like particularly good value for money... It’s a shame as we really enjoyed the evening, and I don’t usually bother to write reviews as I know how tough it can be in hospitality, but hopefully the hotel can work out from this what went wrong - so no one else in future spends the first day of the new year stuck in the bathroom!

We had the parfait to start which was immaculately presented and full of flavour. For mains we had the pleasure of having the duck dish and the lamb dish. Both were presented in a colourful and attractive fashion, were cooked to perfection and tasted magnificent. The live singer, Martin, entertained the whole room all evening. We have dined here on many occasions and have enjoyed our experience. Sadly not this evening. The eveining started with no gin glasses - they had to use wine glasses instead. We waited 25 minutes for someone to take out food order. 3 meals arrived 25 minutes later, and the forth 10 minutes after. They had clearly forgotten this order. We had to ask for a wine cooler, water for the table and butter for the bread rolls. The food overall was barely warm, tasteless and over priced for the ingredients served. We never got offered coffee. The restaurant was busy, and again there didn't seem to be enough staff. Overall a very poor experience. The good thing is my money can be spent elsewhere!

I've previously enjoyed afternoon teas at the hotel restaurant, but the Festive Afternoon Tea served this year was not as advertised on the hotel website. The advertised delicious warm cheese scone was replaced with HALF a very unfestive plain crumpet! No explanation given. When queried, the waitress insisted that the afternoon tea was exactly as advertised, with no substitutes. I accepted this not wanting to cause further fuss, but I checked online when I got home, only to find that I'd not been told the truth. The half crumpet was, of course, not on the advertised menu. While the rest of the Festive Afternoon Tea was ok, overall it just wasn't worth the £19.95 I paid. Worse still, when I emailed the hotel, I received no acknowledgement of my complaint. Nor did the family member who also, on my behalf, queried the restaurant management's indifference to customer satisfaction. The hotel, at my request, merely cancelled another Festive Afternoon Tea booking I'd made for myself and a friend later that week. Due to the poor customer service on this occasion, regretfully, I am no longer inclined to recommend this hotel restaurant or its advertised Festive Afternoon tea.

We were recently bought afternoon tea for two with prosecco as a present for our golden wedding. We've had several here, and they've been very good, especially the warm starters. Today we were disappointed, the starters were good. But the sandwiches and cakes were a disappointment. I've never had a quarter cold bagel before, rock hard, uneatable. The other fillings were cheap, apart from the coronation chicken which was nice. But who thought up egg mayonnaise on a beetroot wrap, which squidges out when you try to eat it. We left the scones with jam and cream, looked like a todler had made them. Enjoyed the one inch square sponge cake. Poor today, not worth £50. Will not revisit.

What a dreadful experience from start to finish. I booked sunday lunch at 2.30, got a call Sunday morning to say last booking was 1.45 - was afternoon tea ok?!? We couldn't get there earlier and had already made arrangements to meet so I agreed. On arrival the receptionist was clearly having a bad day - there was no greeting...it was almost as if we were a nuisance just for turning up! Then the afternoon tea experience started...there's no point in complaining to a young waitness who simply didn't know better...but it really was awlful! Who in the hell serves tomato soup with toasted tea cakes and crumpets - as a starter - before the tiny plate of dreadful sandwiches arrives, accompanied by tiny cakes and the smallest scones imaginable. Oh yes, and you can have tea, coffee or 'fruit tea' - that was it...I asked for an espresso (and wished I hadn't) - coffee clearly hasn't reached Chorley yet! Then I got the bill - £20 per head! unbelievabe, .. but no-one to complain to, not that they would have been interested. It was a disaster start to finish and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone! Needless to say I won't be going back.

A work colleague, a guest and I visited the Vardons restaurant on Tuesday 5th March for lunch. Now firstly, for those who have not visited the restaurant before, it is based within Shaw Hill Golf Club Hotel and Spar. On entering the reception area, the directions to the restaurant are not clearly marked. We asked the receptionist for directions and she pointed to a door! The door takes you to the members/guests bar and then into another corridor. Better signage would help.On entering the restaurant you feel just how dated the décor has become and it is like stepping back into a 1980’s hotel film set. When we arrived (at our allotted time) there was no one on the restaurant reception, we waited a few minutes and then went looking for the staff. Once we found the maitre D' he greeted us warmly and asked did we want a drink in the bar area before being shown to our seats. The service from then on was professional and polite. Now onto the food. For a starter I had the Black Sticks Blue Cheese & Pork Belly Bon Bon with a Black Pudding Puree (please see picture). The dish was presented well, but the cheese flavour over powered the pork and the black pudding puree did not look very appetising. For my main I had the Pan Fried Cod Loin, Charred Little Gem with a Soft Lemon and Black Pepper Mash (please see picture). All in all the dish was ok, but if you don’t dry out the lettuce sufficiently it turns soggy very quickly and this unfortunately was how the lettuce tasted. So in summary, the restaurant needs to sort out the internal signage, update the restaurant décor and pay a little more attention to the food served.

We have been visiting Vardon's restaurant for quite a few years for both lunch and dinner as well as for New Year's Eve and so have noticed over time the changes that have been made.On our most recent visit last Friday night we were very disappointed - not with the food, nor the attitude of the staff but with the level of service. Now I should say from the start that on this particular night there was a function on in the Penina Suite which, no doubt, had an impact on the restaurant. The evening did not get off to a good start when there was no sign of any staff when we entered the restaurant and we had to stand around waiting to be greeted. We then ordered drinks while we perused the menu but, to quote the website, "Start your night with our Head Chef’s hand crafted Canapés and peruse our award winning wine menu." neither appeared.Eventually we ordered our meals and as I said the food was good but most of the time there was nobody to be seen in the restaurant and why when there were only five tables booked that night did everybody have to be sat on tables next to one another so that all conversations could be overheard?Having finished our meals we elected to have our coffee in the lounge but that entailed waiting for about 10 minutes before it arrived with another five minute wait for the chocolates to arrive. The final straw was then not being able to find anyone to pay - in fact I was on the point of walking out without paying! Eventually one of the staff went to find the "manager" who was elsewhere in the building helping with the function, but again another wait ensued. Now I know that the response will be that the hotel was very busy that night and resources were stretched but that is the business that you are in and you should be able to cope with it and not ignore the paying customers. With this level of service this restaurant cannot be considered "fine dining".

Vardons restaurant at Shaw Hill hotel & Spa has always been my favourite venue. Visiting here over many years enjoying luxuriously elegant dining served with courtesy & a smile the most delicious meals of high standard. What is going on? I booked a table for 2 over the phone directly with a member of restaurant staff for 7:30 pm. We had a problem booking a taxi which meant we arrived at 7:45. On arrival I spoke with a member if staff I know well to apologise for our late arrival. A new Manager appeared & asked who we had booked with because we were very late & our details were not listed. I am a member of Shaw Hill Leisure club. I was made to feel very uncomfortable & wanted to leave. Apertifs were served in the form of cocktails. The menu had pages missing & no recommendations given. The meal lacked attractive presentation, food was run of the mill. Fruit unprepared. Rock salt on plate with 2 bread rolls. Menu description promised interesting food which was not served. Dauphinoise potatoes were overcooked roasted potatoes etc. Coffees & petit fours pleasant. We received no member discount & the bill was £100. Both of us left with a bad taste of salt & total disappointment. Shaw Hill hotel is in a stunning location with a beautiful golf course. The restaurant serving medeocre over salted over priced food from a misleading menu is unacceptable.

Dined here Sunday evening from the Sunday menu. The Food & service were fantastic, all staff very friendly & efficient. The food was fantastic, we dine out a lot & this was the best Sunday lunch we have had in a long time. The roast pork & dripping roasties tasted amazing & the accompanying veg was perfect. We will definitely be returning to try the other menus.

A birthday gift.I'm glad I didn't pay for this as it was quite expensive for what you got. It was very traditional and boring.A toasted currant tea cake with soup?Don't get me wrong the food was tasty enough just not good enough for the price. The food is the restaurant is usually outstanding so I was expecting something more exciting

We were greeted by the maitre de, Paul and was ably assisted by Sue. There was nothing that was to much trouble. Proper table cloth and napkins, The food was delicious with good menu options and do have a coffee with some chocolates to finish on the sofas rather than at the table. We will be going back and would recommend this place for a special event as well as a cosy lunch/dinner for two.

Went for Sunday lunch here. It is a little more expensive than other restaurants in the area. The atmosphere is old fashioned and the food is good if a little uninspiring. It gets a 4 (just) for its location which is quiet and peaceful. There are better restaurants locally but it was the right venue for a quiet Sunday lunch. £16 for 2 courses was moderate value. I had the roast dinner which was decent beef and standard potatoes and veg. The dessert was more special with a chant illy cream meringue with winter berries.

Beautiful restaurant and fabulous service without it being overbearing or pretentious. Maitre 'd was expert and judged customers superbly. Enjoyed a Saturday night dinner there. Wife rang in advance as now having son's 21st there and response back next morning as promised was excellent, checking dietary requirements and no problem dealing with our many requests. For two of us the cost was £86. This was for two courses, wine, drinks and coffee and a liqueur. Sounds a lot but was great value. We shared a seafood salad as a starter and that was brill. I had the belly pork with the best crackling I've ever tasted and the wife's chicken was ace. It was really garlicky but we like it like that. Flavours and seasonings were confident and may be too strong for some palates, but to me, it shows the chef has confidence and understands food. Food fresh, hot, seasonal and local. We had our coffees in the lounge at the waitresses suggestion which was a lovely idea. Nice comfy lounge and bar. Really looking forward to our special family celebration in 2 weeks.

We had a fantastic evening, the room was set out beautifully, the service was brilliant... nothing was too much trouble. The food was absolutely beautiful, cooked to perfection and everyone in our party of 16 commented on how wonderful it was. I cannot recommed it highly enough the restaurant manager looked after us and attended to every detail from start to finish, including seeing us all into taxis at the end of the evening. The atmosphere was very relaxed. Thank you Vardons for making my parents Golden Wedding a wonderful occasion. Can'w wait to return.

We only booked an hour before arriving at Vardon's, it was a last minute treat for my new husband, we have had an incredible weekend, got married on Friday, celebrated and surprised a lot of our evening guests at Mark's 50th party, this was a perfect way to end our weekend, the staff could not of been more attentive, compliments to the chef as the food was top class, but to finish it off was the charming manager Craig, he came over chatting and gave us a little tipple to end our meal, can't recommend this restaurant enough and we will definitely be returning. I visited this restaurant on a Bank Holiday Saturday night with my Wife.Upon entering we were shown to pre drinks and supplied with menus to peruse over with our tipples. After some time, Craig, the manager came over to see if he could be of assistance and I was taken aback by his knowledge, not just on the menu, but of wine.He spent time with us sharing his experience of the different wines on offer, even bringing samples from behind the bar for us to try. We were not pushed in any direction i.e. expensive etc, but given neutral advice taking into account our spend and wine tastes. We were shown to our table, and within minutes our starters arrived served on slate with presentation that left nothing to be desired.Attentive staff were soon over once we had finished our starters and brought on our mains. Again presentation was superb with the food being hot, complete with hot plates. I must recommend the Dauphinoise Potatoes, a taste to behold !Now I am not usually a man for desert and on this occasion as usual nothing on the desert list set me on fire. When the waitress came over to see if we wanted desert, my wife made a passing joke that if I do have desert it is apple pie served cold with single cream – which was not on the list. With this the waitress went to the kitchen and then returned to the table to tell me there is a small amount of apple pie in the kitchen and it was promptly brought to my table with a jug a single cream !!!You don’t get that at every restraint and I must make special mention of Craig who is a top manager and welcome for dinner at our house anytime !

We loved the food here. We had all three courses and not one of them was imperfect. I highly recommend the cheese board. It took me ages to finish because the cheese was exquisite, and I had to savour it all! The service was outstanding. Everyone was so attentive and friendly and we had a few chats with the staff. We were there till the staff we cleaning up around us but we didn't feel like they wanted rid of us. On the contrary Craig tried to keep us at the bar by offering us drinks, not that he was a bad influence or anything hehe (and his cheese and wine knowledge was amazing, I was in awe.) Honestly it was an amazing experience and we hope to repeat yearly.

I booked our meal in this restaurant on the 1st March for a 7.15pm birthday meal for my wife on the 1st May. We arrived at the restaurant 30 minutes before our meal, and was seated in a pleasant waiting area. All was fine. Within 10 minutes of sitting down, the head waiter came over and informed us that 2 golfing parties had finished their game late. They had booked for a 5.30 meal, and had now arrived at the restaurant for their meal. I was informed that our meal booking in view of this would be late. We were given a bowl of olives to enjoy whilst waiting for our table. At this point the menu arrived. On reading this I saw that it was just the Sunday lunch menu. When I booked the meal I looked at the restaurant menu on line, and having looked at the al a carte menu I liked it and so booked the table. As this was not the menu I wanted, I approached the head waiter and asked if I could see the al a carte menu, and was told we don't do it on a Sunday. I said this is not mentioned on your web site, he said oh well sorry but that's the only menu we do on a Sunday. Not a very good start for what was a romantic birthday meal for my wife, in that we were second place to a bunch of golfers who were 1 1/2 hrs late for their booking, and to be given a roast dinner which I could have got for less money and in any restaurant. In their defence, when we did get to our table, the Sunday roast was very nice. Had I not got a taxi to the restaurant I would have cancelled our meal, however we were somewhat a captive audience. Would I go again yes, would I expect to be second place to a bunch of golfers No, if they can't arrive on time, they should be second place not us.

We got a voucher for a 3 course meal for 2 with processco. When we arrived we were seated quickly, drinks order taken and menu provided. We were told about the extra supplements for 1 starter, 2 of the mains and 1 dessert! Drinks came quickly and we had barely touched them before being offered more. Eventually the order was taken. We ordered all three courses at once. It was very slow but the food was lovely. The goats cheese tart to start was delicious. We both had suppliment mains (steak and duck) but they were really nice and the sticky toffee pudding was out of this world. Somewhere that actually gives you enough toffee sauce! Amazing. We enjoyed it, with drinks (2 diets cokes and 2 alcholic) and the supplements it nearly doubled the cost of the voucher but we enjoyed it.

From the minute we walked in we were put at ease. We were offered two different areas of the restaurant a quiet one and a slightly rounder one where there were some bottomless brunch going on . Opted for the more atmospheric side and they picked us a perfect table . The evening we were served by Matthew, Max and Alesia. I’m a pretty fussy eater, but no matter what we asked for a little tweets here and there to the menu everything was done without a fuss. The food was lovely, and I can’t wait to go back. Our first visit and it won’t be our last. The manager was lovely also . We had gammon and carbonara with a garlic tomato and cheese bread to Start . All was perfect .
