Boars Head Hoghton in Chorley

We visited on a Saturday evening. It was our first time and we really looked forward to the food. Unfortunately, the quality and taste was not great. The burger was very plain and dry. The fries were soggy. Very disappointed. The pork belly starter was small and flavourless, definitely not worth £9. For a pub defined as a gastro pub this was not a good experience for a foodie like myself. I would not be visiting again.

We visited on Mother’s Day for the first time. Busy as expected but service was good. We all thoroughly enjoyed our Roast Dinners. Top notch ‘proper’ Yorkshire puds and tasty gravy (our request for lots was met with a huge and much appreciated jug!) Desserts were lovely too, sticky toffee pudding 👌 We were all impressed and will be happy to return again when in this neck of the woods 😁

Booked last minute for a Wednesday evening, 2 adults & 1 child. Wanted to visit here for a while as I had heard good things. I ordered fillet steak stroganoff off specials menu, husband ordered Boars Head burger and we ordered bangers and mash for daughter. Burger was good, fries were fresh, all in all as you would expect, a bit pricey but aren’t all things these days ? Now onto the stroganoff, totally underwhelming and gloopy, suspected no cream nor brandy was used although waitress insisted chef included, beef was chewy and the ‘panache greens’ consisted of limp tenderstem broccoli, very disappointing indeed and not what I would expect for a dish costing £17. Child’s meal was a single sausage, a portion of mash the size of a satsuma, and a small portion of gravy on the side, £7.. really !!! Returned the gloop to the bar as no one was for coming to the table to check if everything was ok, duty manager didn’t even apologise.. Idyllic location, however food is overpriced and underwhelming, would call for drinks but would not eat here again…

When we arrived the pub was in darkness. Power cut? But restored PDQ. Driver found carpark quite flooded. We went in & got the usual friendly welcome from waitresses. My attempt at humour:- name please. “Sparks”! was twigged. We shared the black pudding starter & opted for small f,c&mps & c&o pie! Good stuff, really good! 2 pints of proper beer & a glass of wine. Staff well welcoming, quite young? £55 with tip. Satisfied. Some items on specials pretty pricy:- £33 for Beef Wellington?

Well here we go again.After a walk out today we called in the Pub for a drink...... A pint of Peroni £5.60 and a glass of Turtle Bay SA £11.00,total rip off taking the you no what. Not only that our regulars at the bar effing and blinding like there's no tomorrow. I've mentioned this to the owners before,however nothing has changed.If you wont to go to a pub in a nice area avoid the foul mouth people that visit this pub and the extortionate prices. This pub needs to be in the real world. I don't need to visit this pub with my wife and listen to the foul mouth talk of idiots at the bar. Stay clear.......

Amazing food once again. I would highly recommend it. Been a number of times and look forward to going again soon.

Peppered steak pie was really nice. Creme brulee was naughty but 👌🏼. Venue has additional car parking. Modern but cozy feeling interior. I also went here for lunch and had the cod bites which i thought was overpriced for portion size and quality.

First time for me at this pub to celebrate my niece's 18th birthday. I opted for an offer on the specials, Venison bourguignon pie, as did my friend. We both agreed the best pie we had ever eaten, the food was faultless, everyone else all thoroughly enjoyed their food and nothing was left on their plates. Prices are very reasonable for such good quality food also staff were efficient and friendly. The pub itself is decorated to a high standard and I was surprised it wasn't slightly fuller for a Thu evening, but perhaps end of Jan is relatively quiet. I am looking forward to eating there again

An excellent lunch with a group of friends. A clean, atmospheric coaching inn with bags of character. The staff are attentive and make you feel welcome; I thought they were helpful and caring without being intrusive. The food was delicious, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their main course and desert. The peppered beef pie and the cheese and onion pie were notable; the fruit crumble was very good. This is great pub with quality food. Highly recommended.

We went for a birthday/family meal, food was excellent, everybody enjoyed their meals, very good quality food and value for money, staff were lovely, even when the young waiter accidentally ended up wearing a drink, sorry! Will be back again soon.

Food good BUT DO NOT GET ANY GIFT VOUCHER FROM THEM the proprietor would not except the £30 vouchers i received for a Christmas present even though i was paying a £90.00 bill he said it was at his discretion to take them or not , can you believe that

Delicious as always. I had the Steak pie served with home made chips and the best mushy peas ive had for years. Service always top notch. If youve not tried it you're missing a treat.

Absolutely beautiful food, cooked fresh & to perfection The steak was full of flavour & melted in your mouth & was fully complimented by the port & Stilton sauce The fish & chips were really delicious, everything we had from start to finish was amazing & the service was the best. Will be straight back once I have another day off The best chips around is a bonus

Friends having a meal on new year's eve! The pub has such a friendly vibe and so warm and cosy! The food was perfect, I loved my Korean chicken bites and steak pie and crumble, absolutely delicious!! Staff were run of their feet ,was very busy , excellent service!! They all deserve double money 👍😁. Every one enjoyed their meal , the roast turkey with all the trimmings was exceptional!! Will definitely be coming back!!!! Happy New Year!!! 🥳

Booking a table was easy enough, and I can understand why. There wasn't a seat left in the house. Complements to the chef and the team the food was brilliant, no complaints at all for all eight of us. Front of house too no complaints there either very attentive.i personally would recommend the Boars head,we definitely be coming back. As for pricing, you pay for what you get a big thumbs up.

Booked a table for 2 knowing it would be busy the Friday before Xmas. Food absolutely spot on as per usual, service we couldn't fault. Had 3 courses each (the tomato and basil soup was one of the best I'd had) and considering how busy it was, everything was flawless. We had all 3 meals and finished in around 90 minutes. Considering the quality of the food, this place is hard to beat.

We have been here countless times before and rarely had any issues however our visit last week was really disappointing. It started before we even got there - I emailed well in advance after booking on line to check about vegan options as they have removed a few options from the menu. It took them three days to get back to me to say there were options on the menu and offered another couple of options that could be veganised quite easily so I promptly email them back to say thanks and ask them if we needed to book any options in advance - no reply - not good customer service but we all have good and bad days so I didn't give it much more thought. I was the first to arrive of my party on the night and reasonably quickly greeted and shown to our reserved table. A waitress came over to take my drink order and this was brought quite promptly. The rest of our party arrived shortly after and likewise, didn't need to wait long for drinks. When the waitress brought the remaining drinks I asked about vegan options - she told me they were labelled 'Ve' on the menu - I could clearly see that from reading the menu but not wanting to sound sarcastic I had to politely point out that literally nothing on the starter section was vegan - disappointment #1. (I also noticed that a dish containing parmesan was labelled 've' - parmesan isn't even vegetarian let alone vegan! Whoever does the menus really needs to check these things). I asked if they could offer anything and she went off to ask coming back quite a while later letting me know there was one dish they could modify. She disappeared again and came back to take our order a little later. Mine choice wasn't difficult - one modifiable dish from the starter section and only a burger option from the mains section to choose from. The starter was nice enough but the rest of the party did comment on how long it had taken to get the starters although they did enjoy them (disappointment #2). Next course came and again was nice enough - nothing particularly special. The triple cooked chips were soggy but edible. None of us had puddings (again nothing vegan other than sorbet - which is hardly a pudding) but I did have an oat-milk cappuccino. The whole evening cost the best part of £100 for three starters, three mains and 5 drinks so not cheap but really wasn't worth it either (disappointment #3). Some of the staff were nice and friendly, one was very good and efficient, one looked like we were inconveniencing her. The place was clean as always (although the ladies toilets could have done with a quick clean and tidy). It was nice and warm too - important when it's cold and frosty outside. I can see both sides of not having a huge vegan selection - they don't want stock that won't sell but so many things are so easily veganised without a lot of weird and wonderful ingredients that places really need to re-think their offerings. If they don't have options, people will look - and book - elsewhere - and we generally don't eat on our own so these places are missing out on having larger numbers/more frequent customers. Make things and they will come...word travels fast. Last but not least - one of our party asked for a glass of tap water. It came with a slice of lemon. Mouldy lemon. The water was murky and looked like it had come out of the dishwasher. We're old enough to know that sometimes water takes a minute or so to clear when it comes out of the tap but if it hasn't cleared in 10 minutes - it isn't going to. We caught the eye of a waitress and showed her the water - and the lemon covered in white spots (really should have taken a photo of it) - she made an excuse about the tap water needing time to sit and offered to bring another - this time it cleared quickly and didn't have any lemon in it thankfully. Will we go back? - not for a while but everywhere has it bad days so we'll give it another chance - just not for a while sadly; I certainly won't be taking family and friends anymore.

We like the building, restaurant, bar and staff so here we were for a return visit. Overall a nice visit but with a couple of observations that could have bumped it up to a 5* review. The temperature of the mushroom starter was inconsistent throughout the dish - maybe they should have given kit a stir when they were cooking it. A bit odd really. Now to the turkey Christmas dinner. One meal came out with some thick delicious looking slices with (herb coated?) skin on. Yum, I can’t wait for mine to arrive. A minute or two later it arrived with fairly insipid looking slices (no skin) which were about one third as thick. Still turkey I suppose but disappointing. A whisker under twenty quid for the main course alone, which I thought was on the “top side”, for what I got. Anyway, tis the season to be jolly (apparently) so they’re getting 4*.

Mid week, rang the wrong pub to book, went to the right pub. Standard menu & festive! We shared a chorizo & prawn starter - chorizo hard to fine, half a doz decent size prawns! I had festive eg monster pie, wife had sea trout etc including dauphinoise spuds! Quantity & Quality really really good, 2 young waitresses admirable! Couple of drinks each - £72.50 with tip! If this is a chain pub - you couldn't tell! Should I write & publish a book more often? No!

I was staying nearby having travelled up from Devon, so it was my first visit; meeting a friend that was local. I was quickly taken to our booked table and the customer service was perfect. The food was tasty and served quickly. Nothing was too much trouble (I'm gluten free). Never felt rushed to leave our table as we chatted for a few hours. Plenty of free parking too.

Excellent service and the food was delicious. Would definitely recommend. 5 ⭐ all the way.

Visited family and went here. Pleasant staff welcomed us in with our dog 🐕 to the bar area. Everything was clean inside. I had the Ham and Eggs which was nice, everyone else said they enjoyed the meals and drinks they had. Would go again next time we visit family.

Excellent food and service. First visit today and it won’t be the last. We both ordered the black pudding starter. It was a really big portion and to be honest didn’t really need the dauphinois potatoes. The peppercorn sauce was lovely. I had the supreme of chicken and again it was delicious. My partner had the steak pie and it was so good to see a homemade pie. Again it was delicious and very filling, Sadly we had no room for dessert.

Amazing food Had the trio Sunday roast (beef / turkey / pork) And other was the beef roast Nice big portions with a pot of gravy, all cooked spot on and so tasty. Yorkshire puds are big and one of the nicest I’ve had (not your typical burnt effort on the outside and bland full of air in the middle like you get in some other places) . Also had the sticky toffee pudding with small jug of custard afterwards …. Absolutely delightful! From start to finish just superb. 30 mins drive for us but glad we went as we’ll be definitely back 🤌🏼🤌🏼

We went last night table booked for 7pm 9 adults + 4 children. Service was great, staff was friendly, pub was fairly busy, we ordered starters + mains, one of the starters had been forgotten about but staff was really apologetic about it + offered a drink on the house for the person who's starter it was, salt + pepper chicken bites are a definite must try, loaded fries was quite dry but tasty, black pudding starter is really nice aswell as pork belly starter. We all had a starter each + a main with plenty of drinks + the bill wasn't as steep as I thought it was going to be, we spent around 2+ half hours at the table + got asked if we wanted to see the desert menu but we was all to full from starters + mains... Haha everyone at our table enjoyed their meal + never found a fault with any of it burgers, sirloin steak, surf + turf, bacon chop, kids sausage + mash, kids chicken bites, kids cheeseburger, would definitely go back here + recommend. I only got two pictures one of the salt + pepper bites + surf + turf... Thank you to all at boars head for a fantastic meal + service.

Food was good. Great service. They did make a mistake an missed my meal off the ticket. But they resolved it really quickly and didn't charge for my meal. Will gonback again.

Called in for food following going to a Dog Show at the Village Hall. We had Starters served as main course with a side order of chips. Everything delicious and we will certainly make a point of eating here again. Staff very pleasant and helpful too

Just had a lovely lunch at The Boars Head at Hoghton. Nice Gastro Pub both inside and out. Reasonably priced, good food. Friendly, well trained staff. Will be returning.

First visit today, 19th October, and what a great experience. Excellent attentive service in a very pleasant and attractive setting and the food was 100% faultless.

Called here on the way back from Lytham St Anne's to see if we could eat. The place was packed and having 2 dogs we thought there was no chance, but the staff were amazing and fitted us in, in the bar. To add to this the food was exceptional. Highly recommended & we will visit again, next time without the dogs so we can use the restaurant 👍

Large car park and outdoor seating also Since we last visited a few years ago it has been refurbished and it looks lovely Decent menu although not much for a light bite Everything was ok with the food although the ‘triple cooked chips’ only tasted like they had been cooker once as they were only just cooked ! We were a large family group who ordered a variety of meals. Everyone very happy with their meals, generous serves and all piping hot. Kids menu good too. Prompt and efficient service, good atmosphere.

Food excellent, service excellent, drinks a bit expensive

We'd been to the Boars Head once before for a light lunch, which had been fine, but this time we brought the family for a proper Sunday lunch. The restaurant and bar were very busy, but we were given a friendly welcome and service throughout was unflustered, unobtrusive, prompt and excellent. Altogether, we had three different starters, six different adult main courses and five different desserts and every item on every plate was superb - well cooked, well presented and delicious. This is definitely our new favourite restaurant and I can't wait to go back.

We've been plenty of times, and always been pleased, however that has changed after our most recent visit. Food we had and service from our immediate server was nice but we were basically kicked out after just one course, unable to have dessert, it took them 50 minutes to prepare and serve a party of 7 Sunday dinner, 3 of which were children. We were fine with it, we just had a few rounds of drinks. However, after asking for the desert menu, a manager came over and told us we couldn't have desert because we'd reached the end of our 1hr45min timeslot. We were told we could eat desert in the bar, not really acceptable and really didn't make it feel like a welcoming experience we've previously felt here. Their excuse for the service delay? The kitchen can sometimes get really busy. I don't feel like it's fair to punish customers for the delays in the kitchen. They appear only interested in cramming as many covers in as possible, instead of having their guests feel valued customers. Very disappointed and feel like after years of eating here, we will definitely put it to the bottom of our list in future.

We booked a table in advance and due to bad weather. We were five minutes late. We informed the restaurant about this and reminded us that they needed the table by five. We were okay with that. After sitting down we decided that we weren’t going to get starters and headed to the first course. The food was nice enough, but we ordered a vegetarian meal not vegan. I was presented with a vegetarian meal without a Yorkshire pudding we inform the restaurant about this, and they gave us a Yorkshire pudding When we were hundred Yorkshire pudding, it was stone cold and felt wet like it was just out of the freezer. We understand you can’t always have fresh food but this doesn’t feel like it’s cooked so we asked for a new one that one was fine after we ate the rest of our meal Bearing in mind that seven people with a with a baby so it would be hard to eat in such a short time period after it took around 35 to 40 minutes for the food to even arrive after we finished eating the main course we asked for desert menus Then the head of site informed us that they had another booking and that we wouldn’t have enough time for dessert Even though we didn’t have any starters, so it wouldn’t of been able to provide a three course meal in the period of time we were given this did ruin our experience, as though we felt like they were bringing quantity over quality, which is a shame because we have been there before. Had an incredible time in the food been great

Stunningly furnished. Allocated a very small table for 2 near the open window ( not a hot day). It seemed to cause an issue when I requested a slightly larger table. However,, after the waitress checking bookings availability, we were directed to the next table. Ordered food for a quick working lunch - food arrived speedily but then, so did the swarm of flies. The waitress checked if all was ok, at the time we were being absolutely bombed by them. The response from the waitress was, she agreed that they were ‘particularly bad’ that day, ‘because we are near the fields. but we can’t close the windows as it gets too warm’. I lost the battle with the flies and my lunch. My colleague however, managed to guard his more effectively, as they waited impatiently on his head and shoulders waiting to strike. The price of my meal was deducted from the total. I explained why I hadn’t eaten, as they continued to crawl around my plate. Such a shame, as it is obvious a lot of money has been invested into this business, by someone who cares about impressions. The, so what attitude, of the staff, is questionable. I do hope that the kitchen area doesn’t have the same problem for obvious reasons. Disgustingly disappointed.

Excellent food , the presentation the quality and the taste was incredible. I visited with my two family members and all three of us said this is the best food we have eaten in a long time. Obviously a very talented chef. We'll done we will be returning again.

Stopped off for a bit of refreshment on an evening walk and dined outside. Decent ale and non alcoholic drinks selection. Food served to a good standard and priced reasonably.

Came here after a visit to Hoghton Tower. The beer was good and the staff superb. Special mention to the young barman who was exceptionally friendly, good-natured and helpful, who couldn't do enough for us with our slightly awkward combination of toddler and dog.

Went there last summer and it was very good.... This time however, we were very disappointed.... No hanging baskets like last year and the outdoor furniture is tatty and needs replacing. Seems that they are just relying on the all day sun rather than making it a nice experience for their customers. Bar food is mediocre ... and don't bother complaining as they already have your money!

Unexpected visit. We had been to the Houghton Tower Classic car show and the queue for the only food stall, with only 1 serving was endless!! Anyway, we got seated straight away, outside. Served very quickly, even though it was packed inside. The food was very good and plenty of it. Lovely staff who obviously put their customers first.....so thank you 😊

Unpleasant experience this evening. Did try and address with ‘manager’ who was absolutely not bothered. Was fobbed off by being told details were in my email confirming reservation but guess what… NOTHING at all in the email received. Friends food was less than adequate and all that we received was a refund of her starter when both her courses were awful. Not a good place anymore

Had a great time, delicious food, fabulous evening sat outside in the sunshine with my friend, young girl serving did ask us numerous times to confirm our order, maybe she was new, wasn't so much annoying just abit worrying that's all. Would definately re visit and recommend.

A busy, friendly pub serving very good food. Despite being late because of traffic problems, they kept our table on a busy Sunday afternoon. We were impressed.

We dined there Bank Holiday Monday. The menu choice was excellent - with some additional specials as well. We had three courses and all the food was excellent, tasty and piping hot. It was a great meal - made even better by the young lady who served us - so polite, helpful and 'smiley', in fact all the team there were really friendly. A big thumbs up from us and we'll definitely be visiting the Boars Head again.

Went bank holiday Monday at 7:15pm for a meal to try out the new menu and we were NOT disappointed! We had the charcuterie board to share for starters and for mains we ordered the moules mariniere , Seabass and the steak ciabatta with a lovely bottle of l’oasis provence blush which was the right thing to do as we all thoroughly enjoyed! The service was spot on and with a smile from Harriet and Emily! Will be back again and can highly recommend!

Rather disappointed with our lunchtime meal. We asked for a round table at the time of booking, but on the day of our meal we were told that it wasn't available, however, no one used the table while we were there! We had a long wait for our meal, which in fairness, we were told the pepper steak pie takes 20mins. Two of us ordered the pie, and when it arrived, mine was still in the baking dish. After a struggle scraping the pie out of the dish, I realized that was why it was left in - it was stuck to the sides.! The meals were all highly priced, and as there was no lunchtime specials option, we all just had a main course. The service lacked a bit of warmth, and we were generally left feeling rather disappointed, after having been a number of times over the years, and always been happy in the past.

Superb roast great service and beer definitely recommended.

Lovely, well priced light lunch today. Think somebody stuck a whale in my fish finger sandwich by accident! Huge, but yummy.
