Van Looy's Fish and Chips in Southend-on-Sea

Went there today honestly was very disappointed, the sausage was mushy meaning its low quality as in high fat low meat content, the chips were okay nothing special tho. Staff were lovely althought did confuse orders. Won't be going again. So as promised I tried it but was sadly disappointed.

We come here a lot…. Food is lovely…. And the people that own the place and staff are very nice and friendly…will be coming back again…

Fresh fresh cod, large portion of chips, big chips, gorgeous curry sauce & tasty mushy peas. Perfection!

We went on Sunday evening to this restaurant and it is the best fresh, delicious, tasty fish and chips I've tasted. Excellent customer services and very friendly. I always look forward to going to the restaurant whenever I am in southend.

Went to Southend with friends for a day out, and wanted some good fish and chips. These guys were highly recommended by locals when we asked people where we can get the best fish and chips, and we were so glad we went here! The fish was prepared and cooked in front of us, and we were given a generous sized cod and plenty of chips! The food was super tasty, staff were friendly and informative, and we would definitely eat here again! I would recommend these guys to everyone who visits Southend, it’s literally opposite the train station, and has a great vibe inside. Thank you again 🙏

Have tried all the chip shops in Southend over the last 8 years and Van Loo'ys beats them all consistently with quality food, generous portions and fair prices. The staff are lovely and they have recently refurbished the interior. The cod was cooked to perfection, not at all greasy or oily and the chips are proper chips, not half a bag of scraps and a nice sized portion as well. Top marks!!

Have not found another restaurant, with excellent good freshly cooked Fish & chips good sized portions with a nice glass of wine, and excellent service. They also have a varied menu. Thank you. Very good fish and chips and generous amounts (partner wasn't so keen on the chips and should have been salted more. Bit pricey to eat in though so headed to the beach.

25 minutes before earliest delivery time. Driver ignored delivery note. For so early I expected super fresh but chips were cold and fish luke warm at best. For a large I was disappointed. £25 first time order still hungry & disappointed. 4/10 today

This is the best traditional fish and chips in Essex/London. The fish frying is perfect. To my dismay there was no rock today but the chef offered me a skate middle instead that was just unbelievably good. A reason to visit Southend on its own. Y price includes wine.

Had a wonderful Fish and Chips and Mushy Peas Meal in Van Looy ' so today: The service was very friendly and the atmosphere was very relaxed: The fish was cooked to order and was served with a slice of lemon the fish batter was sublime, golden and lightly crispy : the chips were just right with a slight crispiness. It was served with sachets of Tartare, a small pair of scissors were provided to cut open the sachets, which I thought was a nice touch. With a pot of tea for one it came to £15. Best chips shop if I do say so myself 😋

This is our normal fave in Southend and generally excellent. Not sure what happened on this occasion. Usual service with a smile. One large cod and chips good. One medium cod and chips . Cod was dry. One medium cod and chips over cooked little fish and very very dry. 2 pieces of bread and butter given size barely room for one chip per slice. Complaint raised with staff and apologies given. No such luck when it came to payment. Full price taken despite acknowledging the one poor meal. Eating out is expensive. Won't be coming back

Extremely overpriced. I was overcharged for my food but could not be bothered to argue as we had been travelling since early. I won't be returning.

As always we visited southend on sea today and we went to the chip shop for fish and chips. We always go to this chip shop /restaurant for the best fish and chips best service lovely staff. Always service with a smile 😃 great milky coffee will see you all next year when we visit again thanks to all staff friendly clean great service keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍

me and my dad and brother travel a lot and try fish and chip places all around england. we came here around a week ago and it was amazing. the restaurant was clean and looked after and the food was amazing. The oil didn’t taste old and was super fresh along with the sides we got, curry sauce and the mushy peas were also very good and fresh. It was the fresh fish and shops that did it for me! Definitely recommend coming here for a non expensive very tasty meal!

My partner is celiac ( gluten free ) and she said she was 3 or 4 times even double checked to make sure it was and the person said it was took it down the seafront started eating it and it wasn’t gluten free as my partner had upset belly after eating some chips and some of her batters sausage so we had to rush home to rochford front the seafront won’t be going there again now as she won’t trust them anymore

£12.95 medium fish and chips and it was huge. We were a group of 9 and they reserved a table for us at lunchtime on a weekend.

We thought we'd try and support one of the other local chippies that we havent had delivery from before. Disappointed. Fish and chips for two £33.00. Certainly not cheap. It's chip shop stuff come on. That was our choice obviously, but you expect everything to be good. Fish looked like it had done a round with Tyson Fury. Fell out of box in a mess. Certainly not the best of the local chippies, but on the plus size they serve the biggest chips we have ever seen. 5 minutes over the outside time.

We always look for a fish and chips place a little away from the main drag as they have to make more effort for custom, and Van Looy's hit the spot perfectly. Spotlessly clean, quick, friendly service. Gluton free option, salad instead of chips option (for a little more). It was all delicious and light. Not greasy in the slightest. The nicest fried fish I've enjoyed in a long time. They also sell wine and beer. The wine was a bit of a strange choice, just a red, a white a rose. The red was a good quality Spanish, the rose was nasty Jack Rabbit. The red was a no brained.

One of the best fish and chip shops period! Best tasting, food not too greasy and not too dry just perfect. Highly recommend if in Southend and want fish and chips.

We had rock and chips here. The rock was tasty but very small. The large was no bigger than the medium. When we questioned this we were told we had been given two large, yet we would have called them both small. Adding cod roe, one soft drink and one other extra the bill was £40 but we were not full. Tasty but expensive.

had 2 cheesy chips and both boxes had the cheese melting into it so it was rock hard. the chips were brown and obviously bottom of the barrel instead of fresh. the fish was like elastic and the batter all stuck to the paper so that was also not edible. I've used this place before and never really had any issues but after last night and paying over £30 for food that I was on the verge of just throwing away it doesn't feel good enough. I won't be using again.

Love van looys but had delivered by just eat wanted Peter's pie but got pukka which I am not keen on so was disappointed as said on menu Peter's pie but fish and chips were great

The food here is always first class. Best fish and chips in Southend. The battery on the fish is amazing, and the chips are never soggy.

What a shame,this used to be such a lovely place to eat . Now overpriced, and it feels like you have inconvenienced them by being there.

Don't bother, over priced, under serviced, below basic presentation, below basic food, I was so disappointed I just left without finishing my meal. Outside I saw a sign for the takeaway which was a quarter the price with accompaniments! Pictures don't lie.

This takeaway-only restaurant offers fish and chips wrapped in paper, which unfortunately led to oil stains on my clothes. Prices are £8.95 to £9.95 for cod and £3.25 to £5.5 for chips. The freshly battered cod is fried to a crispy finish, but the fish was tough and required a lot of chewing. The chips were soft without a crisp crust. At £13, the price feels high for the location. The restaurant could also benefit from improved ventilation to reduce the strong oily smell.

Fantastic place. Had haddock and chips with curry sauce which was delicious and not only because I was hungry 😋. Very generous portions and perfectly cooked fish and chips. Chips not at all greasy and a fish fried to perfection flakey and moist. Restaurant very clean including bathrooms. Plenty of seating inside and out at the back in a patio area. Service very friendly and attentive. Will definitely go back when visiting Southend again.

Even though website said was open, we arrived and it was closed.

Delivery was late, food was cold and soggy, and the fish was extremely over cooked. There was also a missing item. Van Looys can be very nice when they’re good, but they are not consistent and today they were having a bad day.

We ate here as a family of four. We received a friendly warm welcome and food was lovely. Prices are different if u eat in but I think that’s everywhere in Southend. Will definitely come again when in Southend.

Was missing one cod roe .and cod bites were under cooked

Five of us sat in for fish and chips plus deserts. Excellent quality and service at a good price. Right next to Southend Central railway station and if arriving by car after 18:00 you my be lucky and get a free parking space just outside.

Medium cod chips and saveloy and 2 cans of diet pepsi. At just over £35 very expensive. No other items were ordered .I would say cod was small and a very thin fillet. However, it was perfectly cooked,not greasy and batter was the lightest and crispiest ever tasted. Chips were lovely. Piping hot. Service very quick and staff friendly. This is not a fancy restaurant, more casual cafe style.

Came out of the station a tad hungry saw this chippy got a portion of chips and a battered sausage asked if I could have two forks as sharing upon which the owner gave me another scoop of chips dressed with salt and vinegar found a walk to sit on and devoured everything it was beautiful chips fried to perfection crispy on the outside fluffy inside definitely recommend lovely

Down to Southend for Dexys gig (excellent!) at Cliffs Pavilion on Sunday . Free parking after 6pm (used to be 9pm huh????) now.. But Rossi Cafe stop hot food at 6..so googled Van Looy’s and had nice walk and warm welcome and great cod & Chips. Thanks for being open on Sunday!! If you want excellent fish n chips, in or out, just come here. 👍

Great fish and chips by Southend Central station. Friendly service by the manager, we were very happy with the fresh and delicious haddock fish and chips at £14 a portion (medium chips) to take to the beachfront. Would buy from there again!

The best cod and chips I have had in a long time. Nice and crispy, not greesy, fresh fish, and very tasty. Chips followed suit, will definitely recommend and visit again to try the haddock.

Was not a gluten free meal after I specifically ordered it to be via just eat app and even rang the chip shop as I knew it was not gluten free . I said to them my fiancé will be in hospital if it's not gluten free , there response was it is 100 percent gluten free with me knowing it wasn't as I had it the day before and call tell the clear difference . My partner is now in hospital and I will be seeking legal advice. Terrible . Avoid .

Everytime I come Southend I gotta have fish and chips... its a must! I found this place through researching best fish and chips in Southend... and honestly it ticked all my boxes... it was the best I've had... good portion, fresh fish, outstanding and friendly service... especially with my 4 year old taking time on making her mind up where to sit the staff were so patient... child friendly place. I got myself large codfish and chips and lil one kids meal cod n chips too... the batter on the fish had this crunch to it and melts in your mouth, not like a chewy texture, too good👌 ...im coming back here again everytime I come Southend... this will be my fish and chips spot now on.

We've been coming here for takeaways and to eat-in since they opened the Clifftown Road restaurant. And again today. Quality fish, perfectly cooked in light batter, chips just right and not too greasy. Still the best chippie in Southend as far as I'm concerned.

Best fish and chips in Southend IMO

Came here as my friend researched the best place for a gluten free fish and chips in Southend, and that is certainly what we got! The batter was absolutely spot on, and the chips were so tasty as well and not greasy. We sat in to eat and experienced amazing service, the restaurant was very clean and tidy and had a lovely calm atmosphere. Can’t wait for my next trip to the seaside for another visit!

Ordered 2 lightly battered, well done haddock’s. Lovely pieces of fish cooked the way we like them, generous portion of beautiful chips as well. A lovely meal enjoyed in our hotel room. The 2 members of staff ( probably the owners) were very friendly and keen to ensure that the fish was cooked to our satisfaction. Our thanks to them.

Unfortunately, it was not a good experience. We waited 25min for the food, which I would have expected the waitress to inform us before we ordered. The waitress argued with us for ordering a kids meal for my niece who is not a big eater. Finally, after we ate, within 2 hours, the 3 of us had a tummy ache.
