Came here for the Cinderella afternoon tea with a friend and it did not disappoint. This venue always really goes above and beyond with all the decoration and the little touches. The pumpkin soup was divine which I was not expecting.

The most amazing restaurant, everything about this venue was outstanding, the afternoon tea was so beautifully presented, in fact I would say the cakes were as good as those I had in the Harrods food hall, the decor has to be seen to be believed, wonderful service, I’ll definitely be back, a hidden gem in Essex

Took my girlfriend here for her birthday. A wonderfull expirence and an amazing atmosphere. Service was spot on and the food was fantastic. Will definatly come back

Wow, and Wow again, the setting is magnificent, you need to take time to look in all the little nooks and crannies. The sandwiches were well filled, a nice touch was the warm savoury muffins and chips. The scones were also warm and the best I have had outside of homemade. Beautiful cakes and mousse. We, like everyone else couldn't eat it all, but were sent on our way with exquisite little boxes with our "leftovers". I did find the booking on line confusing.the themes change every few months. We went to the Alice in Wonderland one, but downstairs was Wizard of Oz. They also change to Mum's Mia, the glass slippers, jungle book, Harry potter amongst others, so select your date according to the theme you want, apparently it takes about a week to change themes, so you may not get your exact date.

I am so disappointed with the service. I was due to visit with my pregnant daughter today for a Mother’s Day treat. Unfortunately my daughter went into labour during the night and gave birth seven weeks early. I called the restaurant this morning and told them what had happened and could we possibly move the booking to another day. I was told that this was not possible as it was a Mother’s Day booking! I then asked if maybe they could box it up for us and I could collect it on the way to the hospital. I was told that would be ok but would be charged full price and could I pick it up before 12. That was not possible because I had to shop for everything for the baby and wouldn’t get there on time. I therefore had to cancel the booking completely but was then told my daughter’s deposit would be lost! I do feel under the circumstances they could have been a little more compassionate and let me just move the booking to another day. Very very disappointed and will not be visiting again

Pictures don’t do this place justice! Absolutely wonderful afternoon tea for my friend’s birthday. We opted for the Alice in Wonderland afternoon tea. The decor is fabulous, really creates an atmosphere as if you are in wonderland yourself. Food was fresh and tasty, great value for money in my opinion. Staff lovely and attentive. Great for photo opportunities too! Would love to return to try another themed afternoon tea🐰🐛🍄🌺

Came here for early Mother's Day and grandaughters birthday, we had afternoon tea. Atmosphere was perfect although music a little loud over all a great afternoon, food was delious and presented well would high recommend.

Second visit to this amazing tea room based in Leigh on Sea. No additional cost for a Gluten Free option. Staff super helpful and friendly. Huge variety of sandwiches and cakes. Worth every penny for an amazing experience. Looking forward to returning.

We visited Mad Dogs and Englishman for our Engagement tea and photoshoot . The food was delicious and and so pretty, surroundings are magical . All the staff very very friendly and helpful. Had afternoon tea here many times but was very disappointed on this occasion. Basic sandwiches which consisted of cheese and brown pickle, egg, cheese and cucumber, I tiny pot of chips to share between three and a very tiny pot of coleslaw to share between three. Cakes were ok. Was very expensive for what we received and we all felt that although there has been a price increase the quality of the afternoon tea has decreased. What a shame.

Myself, sister and two nieces enjoyed a lovely Wizard of Oz afternoon tea today. The service was excellent - very friendly, efficient and attentive waitress. The themed decor was very atmospheric alongwith the music from Wicked and the Wizard of Oz. We thoroughly enjoyed the savoury aspect of the afternoon tea especially the warm cheese and chive muffins all brought out in a Dorothy style gingham basket. More than enough to eat. Plenty of fresh pots of tea too. The warm scones with cream and jam were delicious and quite large. We couldn’t eat all of the delightfully themed sweet treats so took some home with us. The attention to detail and friendly atmosphere made it all very enjoyable.

A wonderful experience with family this afternoon at the wizard of oz afternoon tea. At the time of booking I highlighted the need for step free access for my nan and received a call to discuss the options further. I have visited before for the Charlie and the chocolate factory afternoon tea and this was a completely different experience with different menus, decor and drink options. Both were outstanding. For a special occasion I would highly recommend Also had a look at the upstairs Alice in wonderland afternoon tea and although a smaller venue, the attention to detail was still of the highest quality. A much more intimate space with a lovely bar I would recommend both Thank you to everyone for a fantastic experience

😃 Just had a lovely surprise afternoon tea here in the Alice in wonderland themed setting. Even though I'm a 57 year old bloke I still found myself thinking "this is quite magical" (and thats not normally a word I would use). Great food and service. A massive amount of effort has been made on the decor and it is appreceated. Everyone that walked in immediately reached for there phones to start taking photos. So top marks to mad dogs and all the staff. I would love to come back to see what the OZ theme is all about. 100% recommended 😁👍

I visited Mad Dogs with my friends, we experienced the Wizard of Oz theme. It was such a lovely experience......the food was outstanding both in taste and presentation, everything was linked in with the theme and tasted as amazing as it looked. The cocktails were lovely and were served in an extraordinary style. The decoration inside the room was absolutely beautiful, lots to look at and overall the attention to detail was out of this world. The service was great, very friendly and accommodating and saw to our every need. Would definitely recommend and will be revisting very soon for a different theme. A.......mazing!! We had the best time.

I have been to Mad Dogs and Englishmen 3 times now and I have never been disappointed. After The Ritz this is the best afternoon tea I have been to. The themed decor is amazing and they think of every detail each time the staff redecorate it for the next theme. I was there recently for one of my treats for my 60th birthday with my 2 daughters or so I thought I was, on arrival 16 lady members of my family where there and my daughters said that the staff were extremely helpful with the arrangements in executing the surprise. The sandwiches and cakes are delicious with a fab variety. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend Mad Dogs and Englishmen and I look forward to my next visit.

My partner brought me here as a treat for my birthday. This is the third time I’ve been here and each time has got worse. The place a themed decor which is the only reason to come here. We started with four tiny sandwiches my quorn chicken option was disgusting. There was a tiny cup of chips that I had to share with my partner and a very small savory scone. I was still hungry after that course as it just wasn’t adequate. The cakes came out there was one warm scone and various sickly cakes not one of them tasted nice but they looked very pretty. For the very first time I was in the themed room. I was in the wizard of oz room by the kitchen. Although pretty looked like it wasn’t finished with wires poking out and slap dash decor. This place is so overpriced and you just don’t get enough savory food to fill you up. The only positive was the cocktails but at £12 each I expect a decent cocktail. Really disappointing

Celebrated my mums 75th birthday here on 31st Jan - 6 of us - the most beautiful afternoon. You are literally lost in an experience from the minute you step through the doors. Decorated beautifully, transported to Oz and there you stay! Food was outstanding, plentiful, too good to eat even, we all just wanted to look at it. Sandwich’s fresh, scarecrow fries delicious and scones were warm, fresh and so tasty…then came the cakes! Simply blew us away - delicious and as I said all looked too good to eat. Huge hats off to the chefs behind this 👏🏻 first class and top end! The attention to detail and thought that goes into this magical experience is fantastic, it must takes ages and ages. Emily was the perfect host and dressed up as Dorothy adds to it all, she was tentative, topping up drinks and tea and could not do enough for you. A huge asset to you there - telling us how lovely it was to come to work each day and that working at mad dogs is one big family, it certainly shows as she had a permenant smile on her face. Amazing value, you are not only paying for afternoon tea (that is such a high standard) you are paying for an experience. We will all be back again without a shadow of a doubt. Thank you for making mums birthday so magical Emily and of course all at Mad dogs.

Had a wonderful afternoon tea. Always wanted to go here and the experience didn't let me down. Wonderful details and service and food. So much love gone into this and it shows. We made a mess up of our booking day but they managed to get us in and we was grateful. Will definitely be back

I had high hopes when I booked for afternoon tea based on the experiences of others, but these were, unfortunately, not realised. It would seem that if you’re in a large group or sat in the centre, you will get excellent service, unlimited tea, and unlimited sandwiches. This justifies the cost. Unfortunately, if you are in a small group and sat at the side, you will get very little for your money.

My second visit in a matter of 4 weeks. First was the Narnia theme afternoon tea and today’s was the Wizard of Oz. Both were amazing experiences from the decor to the themed food. Service was faultless, with our waitress being there every time we needed something. Today I advised the restaurant of my friends birthday and the desserts/cakes came out with a candle for her to blow out which was a lovely touch. The whole experience is memorable and you can’t help take photos of the decoration which is very clever. Will go again as they cater for food I tolerances as well.

Went in the summer for their afternoon tea with the Under the Sea theme and it was incredible. We had multiple dietary requirements, one gluten free, one vegan, two veggie and one normal and they were all handled perfectly. Couldn’t be more impressed with the service too.

Absolutely amazing experience, afternoon tea in Alice in wonderland themed room. Loved the attention to detail in the room and the food presentation. So much to take in, just wonderful surroundings and the afternoon tea was delicious. We couldn't eat it all but they gave us posh boxes to take it home. Thoroughly recommend.

We visited for Afternoon tea and thoroughly enjoyed the experience I have been on many Afternoon teas and this was the best by far. The food was amazing, service warm and friendly and the atmosphere and decorations were brilliant. We will be returning. Would give this 10 out of 10

Overall my wife was very happy. It was a special occasion so I did not make an issue of anything as I didn't want to spoil the special 60th birthday for my wife. Actually, it was themed afternoon tea, I personally don't drink tea and assumed tea and coffee were part of the package. When asked what I wanted to drink I said coffee only to find when I paid, I ordered 2 coffees and I got actually CHARGED separately on the bill for them and they charged me for 3 coffees! Oh btw, on the online reservation there is a box asking about whether its a celebration and which type. Don't bother filling that in. I did. Waste of time. No one made a fuss or said a thing during our visit. Most places would have done something for a 60th birthday. You normally get something thrown in but here ....... nothing. No after Sales complimentary follow up either. Overall I left disappointed and won't return. £135 for afternoon tea for 2 is not cheap!

Went to Narnia for Afternoon Tea yesterday and it was MAGICAL ! What a truly comfortable and enjoyable experience. The decor , the detail....everything was perfect.......we really were in Narnia. You guys are AMAZING !!!!!!

We went when the Christmas theme was on and it was truly mesmerising. The staff were fantastic and didn’t mind having photos done. The only gripe I had was that the Christmas sleigh that the cakes arrived on lights didn’t work and when we pointed this out to the waitress and asked if it could be changed, she dismissed it, which was a shame as the table next to us sleigh looked magical. As with most afternoon tea venues, there’s always too many cakes and not enough sandwiches but this is what we expected anyway. It would be a bonus if you were given the choice. I would highly recommend a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Took my mum to the Narnia afternoon tea for her birthday and she was absolutely blown away. If you’re reading reviews before booking then definitely book, you won’t be disappointed. 5 stars just aren’t enough!

Having been to Mad Dogs & Englishmen previously, I had high hopes for their Narnia Afternoon Tea, which I had purchased for a family members special birthday. But unfortunately the outcome didn't live up to the expectation that you would expect at this price point for a local tearoom. Although their website states the experience is suitable for over 6s, when I said I had a 8 year old coming, I was told, that the experience isn't for children and the best they could do was offer plain ham or cheese sandwich - but it would be at the same cost as an adult @ £55.00. Considering most London and other local tearooms accommodate for Children, this seems very odd, but we were happy to pay for her to enjoy the experience with us. Our biggest disappointment was the service (or lack of) from the team. From bringing tea but no milk, food with no cutlery or plates to basic things like not clearing the table before bringing the next course out and forcing guests to balance what was on the table to make way for the the new food/drinks. It is quite simple that the current course should be cleared, cutlery/china replenished and then the next course to be served. At this price point you would expect this as a minimum. Both times the food was quite literally 'dumped' on the table dunking the exterior in our teacups or the food that was left. It really didn't live up to the experience that is expected. Coupled with this they brought out the dessert 'sleigh' when half of the table had gone to the toilet, with a candle to say Happy Birthday and once again dumped it on the table and didn't even bother to switch the lights on. Again the little touches such as waiting for the whole table to return and presenting the dessert would have been more fitting. Once we sat to eat the dessert, before even finishing the first cake each, we were asked if we wanted takeaway boxes, to which we said possibly after we have finished. And literally seconds later she just dumped the boxes on the table on top of what we were eating and balancing the boxes on teacups? I mean that is not acceptable and just rude which we are still eating and talking. Things like this can be learnt and in fairness we were told our waitress was new, but nevertheless, the series of errors and mistakes throughout the experience wasn't acceptable. Finally, something that we also found truly shocking for a business such as this and maybe something they should think about is that everything that is said in their kitchen/staff area can be heard from the customer toilets. I heard staff members talking about a particular customer in the tearoom and being very specific about this individual and rude. Maybe take note that all can be heard from the paying customer toilets. Considering the poor service, zero interaction from the waitress, the only thing that kept us was the exceptional food and beautiful decoration of the room. Unfortunately would not be recommending this experience.

We went for the Sunday session with a piano player it was lovely and peaceful. The afternoon tea was delicious, with 3 courses of savoury, scones and then cakes. Will definitely be back!

Came here as a birthday treat that my mum booked. It was the Alice and wonderland theme. Decoration of the room was very pretty and had a lovely cosy feeling and atmosphere. The afternoon tea was delicious and was good value for money. We couldn't eat all the cakes so they gave us a little box to take away. Service was great and staff were friendly and welcoming. Would recommend and will definitely be returning.

We did the Narnia themed afternoon tea today and it was divine! The decorations were amazing, the food and service were fantastic, would highly recommend!

Very nice venue with so many interesting things to look at. We went for afternoon tea - Alice in wonderland experience. Food was a little disappointing, especially one of the four finger slices with only slithers of cucumber in it. The cakes were lovely. My only complaint was I don’t drink tea so had coffee instead but was charged an additional £5.50 for 2 cups.

I had my birthday dinner here last night (jazz night) We probably wouldn't have booked it had it not been for a recommendation from a friend, but I am so glad we did! Amazing food, great cocktails, brilliant staff and atmosphere, and the music was awesome! A great night, I highly recommend this whether you know anything about Jazz or not (I don't)

The Chronicles of Narnia is so magical. The food is amazing, and the staff are superb. Transported for two hours into a wonderful world of fantasy.

Wow! What an amazing experience! Harry Potter afternoon tea was simply spectacular! All the attention to detail from decor, menu, robes, potions, cocktails and INCREDIBLE food blew us away! The soup and mini muffins were mind-blowing! The cakes and chocolate frog were so tasty! The staff were friendly and so helpful, even making a birthday plate extra special for our family. Can't wait to come back and try another theme.

We visited on Sunday for the Harry Potter themed Afternoon Tea. What can I say - it was amazing ! From the moment we entered and were given the secret password it was like being transported into a magical place. The little things like being offered a robe to wear - to the potions in test tubes to mix on the table really added to the experience. The food was delicious and unusual. Between us we had the traditional, vegetarian and vegan Afternoon Teas and each one exceeded our expectations. A taster of soup, savoury muffins, finger sandwiches on the softest bread, followed by warm scones, cream, Tiptree jam and wonderful cakes. We tried a selection of cocktails too which all had t to he wow factor. Presentation, the theming, the service and the food was all spot on and we will definitely be returning.

We enjoyed a fantastic afternoon tea, Harry Potter themed, it was magical. From entering the premises and being warmly welcomed and offered cloaks to wear to sitting by Diagon Alley. All the food was delicious especially the cheese muffins and variety of sweet treats all imaginatively incorporated into the theme, could have eaten more golden snitch tarts. Scones were soft and so fruity almost melt in the mouth. Cocktails were also themed and very theatrical, the Witches kiss was so good. Service, setting, background music, food, drinks the entire afternoon tea experience was so memorable would thoroughly recommend. Will be back again for sure ✔️

For an amazing themed afternoon tea this is magical, everywhere you look you spot something new. The time and effort put into decorating the tearoom is exceptional. When your tea comes out the detail of everything on the cake stand makes it exciting to try, don't know where they get the idea's. Unlimited tea or coffee is included in the price but speciality like cappuccino, latte etc extra.

Mad dogs has always been renowned for excellent afternoon tea but have recently started serving breakfast too. We went today for a birthday brekkie and I can honestly say it was the most delicious breakfast that I have ever had! Plenty of other items on the menu that I will happily go back and try. I’d highly recommend

Well just back from visiting Mad Dogs and Englishmen at Leigh-on-sea. We went for a birthday celebration to have an Whispering Woodlands afternoon tea. One world review? – Superb – very quirky location, tasty, generous food and friendly service. We had Pumpkin Soup, a Cheese and Chive Muffin, 4 different finger sandwiches, a warm scone with clotted cream and Tiptree Strawberry Jam, 4 different cakes and an Eton Mess. Washed down with tea made from leaves (not tea bags) and chilled champagne. Recommend thoroughly.

My Mum surprised me with a Harry Potter themed afternoon tea and the attention to detail, from the props and layout to the food and drink was amazing. Can’t wait to try another one with my friends.

Booked A Wizarding Wonder for a 50th birthday. For a non-Harry Potter fan, my better half (and myself!) absolutely loved every minute of our visit. Food was excellent, staff were friendly and professional throughout. So refreshing to not be asked every five minutes "is everything alright with your food" like in many restaurants these days. We were just left to enjoy a magical time..! Can't wait to go back to experience a different themed event. Highly recommended!!

Quite disappointed, I'd heard such good reviews so I booked months in advance for my big 0 birthday, loving flowers it was just what I wanted. Less than 2 weeks before I and my family were due to go I received a courtesy email saying it wasn't botanical garden themed now it was a wizardy enchanted forest. To say I was disappointed was an understatement, couldn't change the venue as they had 140.00 of deposits off us and at just over 1 weeks notice where else could I find for 14 people. Venue was done out quite nicely if you're a wizard/witchy fan, I'm not, we were squashed on a long table, seemed like an after thought, so difficult to get in and out. I couldn't get to talk to the people at the top of the table as I couldn't get to them. Service girls were lovely but conspicuous by their absence, they bought 4 pots of tea over, 25 mins later they came to see if anyone wanted drinks or coffee, which we did not being a tea drinker. Service very slow, nothing was explained, no room on the narrow table, just very disappointing. Downstairs was open, light and dressed out with lots of flowers, cooler not so claustrophobic, that would have been exactly what I would have liked so I've no idea why the put us upstairs in a squashed corner. Food was lovely, not many sandwiches which a few of us would have preferred(personal taste) lovely little cakes, and a lovely warm fruit scone, jam and cream followed. Its a family run business I believe and the ladies in charge knew I wasn't very happy, they watched us leave with no attempt at a goodbye. Ideal a tea if there's 2 or 4 but not a large group which is what it's known for catering for. Disappointed.

Decorated in the Harry Potter theme. Tasty sandwiches and delicious cakes all named and Decorated in the HP theme. We were handed cloaks to wear as we entered. A truly magical afternoon. They provided a full diary free option for one of our group. I can't wait to book the next themed offering!

Absolutely fantastic! I came here today with a friend who I regularly afternoon tea with and I can honestly say this was the best we’ve experienced for a long time. It appeared to have been created by someone who clearly loves afternoon teas and knows what is expected. The attention to detail with the deep sea, Little Mermaid themed room was on point, along with the table decor. Food was fresh, delicious beautifully presented and definitely plentiful. The staff member who served us was attentive, friendly and couldn’t do enough to help us. We will definitely be back!

My favourite place to have afternoon tea. They are always accommodating with vegetarian and dairy free. If they could accommodate for those with nut allergies then this place would be perfect. I would love to bring my Son who has severe allergies, but unfortunately it wouldn’t be safe for him. I would attend more regularly if it was safe to attend with my family.

We went for the Jazz evening, we arrived at 7pm thinking the jazz musicians would be already there or at least starting to set up but sadly not. It was a good 40 mins it felt before any actual live Jazz music had started and we didn't actually know when the music would start as it didn't state on the booking original form about this, the Jazz musicians were great performers but I feel Mad Dogs could have informed people actually when the Jazz musicians would play and how long the evening goes on for. The Jazz music actually stopped for a break about 45 mins in and this was when we had to leave due to booking a table for late dinner as none of food on the Jazz night menu was fulfilling due to only being small starter kinda platers not actual meals, they also didn't have enough vegan and vegetarian options. We did purchase some olives to nibble on due to being so hungry but would be alot better for customers and for their venue for the Jazz nights to cater a set menu with more options. The cocktails in the botanical room are always perfect and made with love and attention, the glasses they use are always beautiful as well. Just a shame they don't explain when the Jazz music runs on for and times and things when booking as well as providing better food options. I would still go back to the Jazz evening just probably eat before hand if possible rather than afterwards and just go for cocktails. This wasn't possible for me though due to having work before hand and only being able to pick the 7pm slot booking. Plus, the table arrangements for looking and viewing the Jazz musicians wasn't ideal, felt slightly awkward where we where put on a table for two and in the way of other people getting in and out their chairs.

Wow! What an experience! For me, I was a bit overwhelmed, as there was a lot of decor, but the detail they put in each decoration and theme, is amazing. The price was higher than I would normally pay, however, the food was absolutely sublime, and so filling. We ended up taking the rest home with us in a little box, which was cute. The toilets were on the other side of the restaurant, and there were lots of little stairs, so be careful. The staff were attentive, and when I needed a new cup, because I accidentally poured the tea without the strainer, they were happy to hand me a clean one. It's a lovely idea for a little birthday celebration or mother's day.

What a fantastic place. Beautifully decorated. Food was spot on, yummy savoury foods and lovely sweet treats for after. Cocktails looked amazing. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be going back.

Absolutely stunning atmosphere and treated ourselves to the Under The Sea experience. The food was exquisite and with a marvelous cocktail menu to match. We asked to have our tea and coffee in another room afterwards and it was lovely to experience another beautiful room. It is definitely not cheap and if having any other type of coffee you will be charged extra without warning! After spending a lot of money it was a bit of a shock. We would have stayed longer and made an afternoon of it but staff came to clear away and was obvious that they don't encourage that, which is a pity and a complete loss of income. I would recommend these with pre warnings.

Came in a couple of months ago for afternoon tea with my Mum to celebrate my birthday! We were fortunate enough to experience the Secret Garden themed room upstairs, and I was honestly blown away by the decor and detail involved. Every single inch was meticulously decorated with either flowers or greenery, and the addition of the garden gate at the entrance and the bird cage really made it feel like you were in the ACTUAL secret garden. The afternoon tea itself was delicious! Loads of options of both sweet and savoury bites, as well as sandwiches and cake too! There was actually so much that we both took a to-go box home to enjoy it later on. They even put a little candle on a cupcake for me as it was my birthday! I’d highly recommend you read or are familiar with the story of The Secret Garden before visiting, just so you can fully appreciate the room. Can’t wait to come back and try another room!

Came for a 70th birthday. The theme was Beauty & the Beast. When I say theme I say that loosely because other than a couple of bits of crockery and the music that was it. I could have had 3 perhaps even 4 cream teas elsewhere for the price they charged. I really don’t think there was anything to warrant the extremely high cost. I definitely wouldn’t recommend going.

Went for the Under the Sea Afternoon Tea with a friend, to celebrate our birthdays together and both of us were blown away. From start to finish it's all within the theme. The doors to go inside, set the scene straight away. The food was lovely! I personally hate mayo and normally just pass whatever has it on to someone else in my party to enjoy, but here I was offered the same with it left out. :) It wasn't a problem at all. :) All the food was just great. The cakes were so many, that we both brought some home to enjoy later on. :) Service was friendly, everything was explained really well. We'll def go again! :) I might even pop back for this one with my little girl! :)

A wonderful afternoon tea experience- have visited twice for Mary Poppins and Beauty and The Beast themed teas and both were equally wonderful. Theming and decor is incredible, food is delicious. Highly recommend!

This was our second visit here . The first was to the Mary Poppins tea and this time it was to the Beauty and the Beast tea. Both were equally amazing. As you walk into the room it is like walking into a film set. The attention to detail is amazing. The food each time has been first class and served in beautifully themed ways. Both times we have come away with a box of cakes that we couldn't manage. If you are looking for an extra special afternoon tea then I can definitely recommend Mad Dogs and Englishmen.

We haven't visited before but have heard a lot about the themed afternoon tea. Visited today for a celebration and were not disappointed. Brilliant atmosphere and very nicely themed. The afternoon tea was one of, if not the best we have had. Highly recommended.
