Beautiful place but that's it. Watered down drinks and trying to overcharge on several occasions. Poor bride and groom being charged for one of their guests drinking a bottle of there own vodka. Will never ever go here again. £7 for a pint of San Miguel. The staff should all be wearing masks.

We had the most magical amazing wedding at Vallum, it was the first venue we saw in person (covid planning!) but instantly fell in love. Vicky was great right from the start, really relaxed and there to answer all of our questions. It was a complete blank canvas we could make our own, but naturally is just so beautiful inside. Nick was absolutely incredible on the day making sure everything ran smoothly and we’ve never had so many comments on the food! compliments to the chef Jonny the lamb has gone down in history. Our day was so much more than we ever imagined, absolutely perfect venue. Thank you so much for the perfect start to our next chapter! Mrs & Mrs Ainsley x

What an incredible taster menu. Amazing flavours, food beautifully and intricately presented. Every one of the sixteen courses on the taster menu was exquisitely executed and a delight for the senses. Pure food theatre. The staff are wonderful, the music adds to the relaxed atmosphere and we had a fun evening.

We visited on Monday 21st February 2022 but won't be going back. This is a cafe we've visited many times before it was altered last year. Previously, seats were in a lovely airy room with outside views all around. Not any more. The tables were in a straight row down the side of the room, at the bottom was a door to outside which kept blowing open, the door to the kitchen was alongside us and a speaker blared too loud music above our heads. The display case for cakes etc. was virtually empty and it took ages for our scones and coffee to be brought, we were the only visitors at the time though other people did come in. Our small table was filthy. What a disappointment and waste of money. We asked for sugar for the coffee but it seems they only had one sugar dish as this was then taken for someone else.Only positive was that the scone tasted nice.

Vallum cafe at Wallhouses is a real treat - delicious tray bakes, scrumptious savoury dishes and bacon sandwiches to die for ! Set beside a working fitness studio set up by two fantastic entrepreneurs who have combined brilliant classes for everyone and coffee, brunch and lunches afterwards. They also provide speciality evenings too with the emphasis on well being ! What’s not to love - fitness - food -friends - and a family who care about you !

Visited with my son and husband. Limited menu due to Xmas period. The table was filthy. My hubby ordered soup which was left out on the side from the kitchen for ages whilst our meals were served. The waitress then took it back into the kitchen and clearly reheated it. No cutlery was given. Tables crammed in and no opportunity for social distancing. A really poor visit will not return sadly.

Very disappointing! No milk to make hot chocolate. Very limited menu, no veggie options. The tea pot and cup and saucer needed a good clean. The speakers near our table were loud with noise from a children's programme being shown. Rubbish service! Will not be returning.

The cafe at Vallum Farm used to be amazing - such wonderful homemade food. Since the reopening and renaming it is very disappointing. The cafe is now squashed into half the space, the pre-made sandwiches/salads are in the fridge not made fresh. There’s a counter heater with pies which doesn’t look appealing. The cakes used to be interesting but now not. Sad to say we won’t be going back. Why these changes have been made just baffles us.

It's obviously difficult for people working in the hospitality industry at the minute with increased pressure and additional restrictions that must be tough to get used to. However, it's not cool to be using it as an excuse for terrible customer service. Rude, overzealous staff barking orders at you is not fun. We're all being affected by this, not just you. Awkward and unpleasant. We won't be in a hurry to return.

We have been going to the Vallum for many years and always been very pleased but we went in late August /September and there must have been a new cook on. The salad was the worst I have ever experienced. In fact there was no lettuce on the place. It was a heap of cheese which had been pulled to bits mixed with red onion and masses of olives Tasted awful. The waitress even said it had been in the fridge since yesterday. How great is that? There were queues long and not many satisified with what they got. Pull up your socks Vallum or you could go under fast. Not good and sad really that you have allowed this to happen. Sack the chef.

Our grandchildren participated in the event today and found it organised in a hap hazard way. There was little organisation or effort made to give the kids a memorable experience. No one seemed in overall control and there was little up front management. It was rather left to a staff member to dish out games and material in an ad hoc manner.

Been here before for snacks, cakes etc. We intended to just have something light today. The Sunday lunch looked good though so we went for it (saved cooking later). We’re veggies and the sunflower loaf with roasties, veg and gravy looked promising. After over 30 years of being a veggie this was the tastiest restaurant veg roast I've ever had. Roasties were a bit soft and not crisp but the veg was really tasty from whatever they were cooked in. A little more gravy would have been welcome. Overall a very tasty meal.

Taken by a friend for lunch with my wife, daughter and grandson, aged 3 years. Adults with children have their own room in the tearoom. Our room for parents and children had toy kitchens and items that can be taken to the table. The menu is the same as the adult room, and there is acceptance if children are noisy.. A Sunday roast for the adults was delicious, and there was a good selection of cakes and coffees afterwards. Our youngster enjoyed items from the children's menu. The staff were good with him and he even got an extra free scoop of ice cream because he was 'cute'. (can't promise that they do this for everyone, however cute they may be).

Visited vallum tea room yesterday for Father’s Day. First time I’d visited although my family had been before. We hadn’t booked but managed to get a table. The young lady that served us was lovely and did advise there would be a wait for food and drinks as they were extremely busy. I could see very large tables of people in one of the rooms. We sat and were advised it was table service. Had outlet drinks order taken a few minutes after sitting and waited 10-15mins for them which I expected. Food took over 30mins to arrive but was well worth the wait. Absolutely beautiful Sunday lunch. Only thing that spoilt our visit was a rather obnoxious customer who felt the need to shout at the staff. It was very busy and they didn’t seem to stop yesterday so to yell at them seemed quite unfair. Yes there was a wait but that would be expected on a busy day.

We arrived about 2.15 and had to wait a least 10 minutes for someone to show us to a table. Another 15 minutes before waitress came to take our order. When we asked what cakes there were she told us to check at the counter- so much for table service. We did look then placed our order for 2 coffees I tea and three pieces of cake. We then sat for a further 30 minutes and then after noticing people who were seated after us being served and still no sign of our order, The 3 of us decided not to put up with this lack of service any longer and left. We also heard of others complaining of the long delay of. Wing served. Lots of very young staff who appeared to have no one to give them any customer service training or guidance. Could be a little gold mine but not if they continue to trade like this.

This is the second time we've been as a family and the second time we've walked out. The first time was after nobody took our order after 30 minutes, however I thought I'd give them another chance today. I had my 90 year old father with me as it was father's day and we arrived for a cuppa at 10.30. We were told that we would have to sit outside which should have raised the alarm bells and sure enough after 20 minutes of waiting we filed our first complaint. Our order was taken and we were moved inside as a way of apology. After another 30 minutes of waiting for 2 teas and a scone I'd had enough. Complaint number two to the manager was filed and we left. That's an hour of my life I'll never get back and I'll never return. It was my dad I felt sorry for as I had to get him back to the care home without his cuppa. Based in Bishop Auckland, it takes a certain kind of special to justify us making a 60 mile round trip - the beautiful scenery, passionate staff and beyond delicious food make Vallum restaurant absolutely worth the journey. Their Sunday lunches have ruined us for other Sunday lunches, the bar has been set that high. We waited quite a while to be served, although they did seem a little understaffed. I ordered the Coronation chicken open sandwich, which consisted of one small slice of bread with very little coronation chicken on top. It came with some salad (just green leaves) and coleslaw and was the most expensive sandwich on the menu. My daughters pack lunch box contained more food and was a lot cheaper. I did speak to a lady about the sandwich and she was nice about it and offered me some money off, but when we came to pay she was nowhere to be seen and nothing was done about it. We waited around for a good 10 minutes for her to appear but it seemed she was avoiding us.

Having had a great breakfast a few visits ago we tried to go about once a fortnight to enjoy another. However the last two unfortunately were poor. Our second last one was not as good as the first with the bacon slightly hard, along with the poached eggs. However our latest one was not very good at all. The bacon was that tough you couldn't cut it and it ended up on the floor. The poached eggs were not as they had previously been, which had been excellent on the first visit. It did not equate to the £21.00 it cost. It's a shame as we had praised the breakfast up to a number of our friends, suggesting they try it.

I pass the Valium everyday and over the years visited many times. On the whole it’s a good site with a lovely walk, dog friendly and a nice play area and space to let kids be kids. The food has always been a little expensive but the cakes, ice cream and coffee were great value and very tasty. But recently it’s all gone down hill it’s like the owners have got lost is it a tearoom or wedding venue or a camping site. The closure of the bakery and ice cream parlor has left a huge gap. The loss of the indoor kids area is huge to mums with young children during the week. The staff lack leadership and seam uncaring.

A bigger salad on the side would be nice but other than that no complaints. There was a gentleman there (presumably the owner?) who told us about a good walk around the land and was really helpful and friendly. Think it came to about £35 for all of us which i don’t think is over priced as many of the reviewers on here seem to think

I last visited the chalet tearoom at Vallum about a year ago, and it was pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good. This time around I was meeting a friend I haven't seen for ages. As I entered the chalet, I was greeted warmly by the strong aroma of what can only be described as dirty nappies. Not surprising as the first thing you notice are the toilets. As I was sat at my table waiting to order, there din't seem to be anyone in charge. To quote Warren G Bennis; "failing organisations are usually overmanaged and underled." My next niggle is that there is apparently a bakery somewhere on site. Where I don't know. The soup was fine but the bread did not seem to be fresh, convinced it was frozen. Same goes for the scone. The cakes we had were very dry and looked lifeless. The decor is a mismatch and doesn't suit the chalet exterior. The toilets are very unpleasant and are in desperate need of a refurb. All in all a very poor experience. The buildings opposite the chalet looked empty and souless on the way out, not what you'd expect from a wedding venue.

Vallum is 2 miles away from my house so really hoped it would be great but its just not. The location is fantastic and the split of kids room with toys is great for famalies but I must have been 10 times over the past 18 months and every time i go the experience gets worse. Today was "off cream" on a kids hot chocolate and when i complained about it, no apology just a "it will be 10mins if i have to whip some more cream"... Seriously.. My Tea cake also came 10mins after my daughter had already finished her cake. If you want a cafe locally check out the Hearth in Horsley, great food and service or if you need something on the Roman road the Robin Hood pub opposite has good food, friendly staff and worth a visit

Called in for a break on the way back home. Tea, coffee and cake were the main orders with a small ice cream tub treat for the children.

Callum Tea Room is part of a nice farm complex with deli & kids play park. Nice cafe menu, food good (grow much of ingredients). Ice cream choice used to be brilliant but only 3 flavours on our last visit.

Called here again - about 2.30pm - tired after a long walk at Kirkheaton. We were promptly served with our drinks - mug of coffee for me and a hot choc for my son. Our meals soon arrived, and had a little unexpected extra - pasta pesto. A nice little surprise. Not expensive and staff seem happy.

A definate improvement from what it was a while ago. The service has improved and the cleanliness by far! Staff seem much happier to help and more caring. Cakes are lovely, good coffee and the coronation chicken sandwich with lentils is yummy! Perhaps a little bit pricey, but ok for a treat every now and then. Adeqate parking and a nice (safe) outdoor play area for children and dogs.

This place is lovely. We went for a cup of tea and a snack, which was lovely. However we stopped in for breakfast another morning and it was amazing!!! Beautiful - plenty on your plate and lots of tea. There are loads of facilities such as the kids play area, decking, restaurant and shop and probably more. Nice staff and lovely place for food. Highly recommended.

If your doing Hadrian's Wall walk or your just out for the day, this is an oasis for the weary traveller. There is even a short walk down to a pond. It's great at this time of year because the kids are back at school. Its mainly snacks with ample seating with a decking surround.

Service wasn't great, the staff didn't seem to know much about what they offered. Decided since the tea room didn't offer a cream tea to just have a glass of water and a scone. Would have preferred clotted cream with the scone. And the tap water never actually arrived. All in all was very overpriced for nothing special.

What can you say about ice-cream? It's creamy. It's frozen. It tastes amazing. Where else can you buy licorice ice cream? Go there and find out for yourselves, you really won't regret it. If you want cheap ice cream, go somewhere else.

So we did the kick golf near and thought we had checked tripadvisor before but obviously we hadn't when we went in for a scone and coffee afterwards. We waited for the table and was asked if we wanted lunch which was about to be served we said we only wanted drinks and cake so took a seat outside. Once we ordered we both commented that there was no prices on anything inside, quick check of the menu online, weren't given one, and we nearly fell off our chair, £2.95 for a fentimans soft drink, now we liked those drinks and most I have ever paid is £1.95 in any tea shop we have been in but £2.95 unbelievable, went in and asked for two drinks to become one, according to the waitress they had no other soft drinks. Coffee comes in two sizes according to the website but we weren't told, had to ask for a mug which is pennies dearer. Scone was very good, but we had it with a thimble of jam, found out later that it was 80p each, it was nice but 80p incredible. Kids had cookie overdone and brownie very good but dad had a heart attack on getting the bill, only glad we put one of the drinks back.

Myself and partner out over that way today and decided to drop in .I had the Bacon Sandwich which was anaemic and my partner Scrambled Eggs on toast which consists of bread so hard could cut it,two eggs full of water and no butter. This took 20 minutes to arrive and during this time a group of 10 started moving tables to suit themselves! I live quite local and will not be returning to the Cafe as the standard of Supermarket Cafe food was better, cheaper and quicker.

My partner and I drove 15 miles out of our way home for coffee and cake. We were welcomed by an informative board instructing us to wait to be seated and that there would be 'top table service'. We were seated quickly, then waited 15 minutes, watching other parties being both seated and served and still we had not been served. On our way out we enquired what the problem had been and apparently they had not seen us despite seating us. It was really very disappointing as we had come so far.

Unexpected stop off whilst walking the wall based on a recommendation from another walker. The cafe was very busy on arrival and It did take a little while to get seated as the other guests were milling around the entrance with a number of prams in a tight space and a number of guests who needed to be seated for health reasons. The positioning of the check in desk did not seem helpful.

On the Military road, East Wall houses NE18 OLL We found what we believed to be a simple tea room, but we were surprised to find it was much more. In fact. There was a shop selling wonderful bakery goods a wedding venue with all the guests enjoying the sunshine and Northumberland landscape for a photo shoot, a park for the children and the tea room with an excellent menu from home made soup, pastries and salads and more, and we all had pudding. Lovely food attentive staff and choice to eat outside while keeping an eye on the children, and the view was wonderful. What a find.

After having a drive out in the lovely Northumberland countryside we stopped here to have lunch. My wife as usual opted for the Jacket Potato and I had the "Club Sandwich". Both meals came with an ample salad's and extra's on the side. The " Club Sandwich " was excellent. It had Cheese,Ham,Gerkins and dressings and was slightly toasted to melt the cheese and increase the overall experience. It is well worth a visit and for all you fit people out there well worth breaking your trek on the "HADRIAN WALL WALK"

Visited yesterday for a family meal, extremely busy so glad we booked. We had got salmon blinis, lovely but very sparse on the salmon. We all had roast beef, could have been hotter and carrots maybes cooked a bit more. However we were offered more roast potatoes if required. All stuffed afterwards although my brother did manage to eat a slice of brownie cake for which he enjoyed very much. Slow service but understandable due to being so busy. Would visit again when not so busy

Drinks took 45 minutes to arrive. We're now at 75 minutes and no sign of food yet. Two scones (to go with soup) arrived first (cold). When asked why not served with soup was told - they come from the counter not the kitchen, if you want them together you should have asked. We asked if food would be arriving soon as we'd been waiting ages, and was met with a non-commital shrug. Will not be back.

Nice welcoming staff. Good range of drinks . Food tasty and very good value for money. The decor is a bit tired but the good food and atmosphere outweighs this. Looks like the new owners are working at gradually improving its looks but making their priority good food, good drink, friendly atmosphere.

Its a while since we've been, won't hurry back. Went for breakfast, no egg on menu, no choice of white or brown bap, tea was bag in cup no pot, took so long to arrive our drinks were gone.

Lovely place great staff. We had sandwiches but was asked if we would like salad or crisps or coleslaw with them . Everywhere I’ve been to offers you all 3! Especially at £12 per sandwich. Too expensive.
