What a treat, the cafe has everything: delicious food and a lovely games / toy area for children. We had sandwiches, jacket potatoes and a wonderful lemon scone with lemon curd. Our dogs were made welcome. Would highly recommend 😊

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! Gorgeous place, fantastic vibe and absolutely awesome staff. Visited with family and two dogs whilst on holiday and were welcomed with opened arms. Staff had dog treats on hand ready for their four legged guests and a delicious menu for the humans. Food was absolutely delicious and there is an awesome selection of teas. I went for the extra strong tea and can honestly say it’s the best I’ve ever had. Wished I lived closer as would visit regularly. Thank you Valerie and team x

This is supposed to be ‘best cream tea in Monmouth.’ Scone was the driest I’ve ever had. Sucked all the moisture out of my mouth. Service average. WiFi dodgy. Loos closed. Cafe is open and shut at odd times. Place had no vibe. Coffee was ok. Would not recommend.

We stopped here for lunch while visiting the town. We received a warm and friendly welcome from the staff who were very helpful. The cafe had a nice atmosphere and there were lots of books and DVD’s to look at as well as lovely old pictures of Monmouth. The food and coffee were delicious, we chose a savoury scone with cheddar and pesto which was recommended and a tuna toastie. Both came with salad and crisps. This cafe is a gem and well worth a visit when in the area.

My daughter and I stopped in for scones and tea with doggy in tow. We felt welcomed and looked after. I loved meeting the owner and hearing about her grandma Valerie who the cafe is named after. There is a kids’ section of games and books to keep youngsters busy and plenty of adult reading too. Our doggy received a treat and was photographed to put on the wall. Our scones were large and soft - much better then the small, hard ones we get in the States. The strawberry and raspberry jams were delicious. The staff made sure were happy with our tea selection. Worth a visit!

Popped into this quaint cafe while on holiday in the area. The owner was friendly and very helpful. We enjoyed a variety of tasty sandwiches and lovely hot coffee. Decided to take away some of the scones which came with a small pot of jam and cream. The owner suggested warming them slightly. They were so delicious. You can even order some by post. Highly recommend this brilliant cafe.

This is a real gem. We opted for breakfast en scone . It was delicious , freshly made with high quality ingredients. There are lots of options to choose from. The scones have very interesting flavour combinations. We had sausage and scrambled eggs and sautéed mushrooms on cheese and herby scones whilst sitting in the sunshine with good coffee. We enjoyed the huge scones so much we subsequently ordered three sets by post. The service from Estelle and Kieran was brilliant, very personal and beautifully packaged scones arrived as promised the next day. All wonderful value for money. Do pay them a visit ! We can’t recommend this small independent business enough . Thank you . We will be back x

The gluten free cake was amazing and the lady was very knowledgeable, I felt confident in eating here (which when you are a coeliac isn't very often) My non coeliac daughter had a baguette, which she rated as "one of the best she's ever had." If I was basing this review purely on the staff, it would easily obtain a 5 star. They were extremely pleasant and friendly but the overall review has to include the food/drinks and value and whilst the drinks were fine and the Welsh cakes very nice indeed, the cost, I felt was very high. Whether this has anything to do with my age I don't know, but £8.60 for a pot of tea, cup of coffee, Welsh cake and cinnamon bun seemed very expensive to my partner and myself.

Having driven passed Monmouth on the way to places thought it was about time to visit and very worth it was too even on a grey March morning. So lunchtime approaches we need to find somewhere and lo and behold down a small alley at the top of the high street in the Beufort Arms you find Valerie's and what a treat! We (sadly) only needed a snack and went for the baguettes, when they came it look as if it was going to be hard to eat (as in a hard crust) but hey it was one of the best baguettes I've eaten and the fillings were plentiful and tasty. Lovely coffee too. We will be back because the scones and cakes looked delicious and home made, the staff themselves were very friendly and helpful. All this in a Georgian building, perfect

A wonderful afternoon in Valeries - the Scone Sharing Board is delicious and a great idea! Our choice was unique double chocolate scone, special white chocolate and cranberry, superb sultana scone and amazing hot cross scone. Visited for lunch recently. We had a light all-day breakfast and eggs on toast with beans, with tea for two. All very nice, brought rapidly. The decor is cosy and welcoming. After a 13km lap of the family cycle trail in the Forest of Dean, my 9 year old son and I popped into Valerie's to see what they had for breakfast. We decided to each have the breakfast baguette (egg, sausage and bacon in a freshly baked soft baguette, slightly crispy on the outside). We played one of their board games from a nice selection while we waited a few minutes for our food. It was delicious and we loved sitting in the room with its mix of cafe tables and small arm chairs. A very pleasant experience altogether. The staff were extremely nice and made an effort to chat. We stumbled upon this cafe after I read 'cream tea' on a pavement board out in the street with an arrow towards the court, which I didn't know was even there! (tourist!) I have to say, the scones were absolutely fabulous and amongst the best I have ever eaten, and I have eaten a fair few being a massive fan of a cream tea. I was suitably impressed with being presented with a choice of jams too! The lady serving was very nice and welcoming. I'm not sure if that was Valerie herself, but we had a really great visit and I especially loved that there was a reading room for children and a lending library! we popped in expecting to find the French inspired tea shop that we had visited a few weeks ago to find the name had changed and the style of food also so I assumed it had new owners. Liking to support local people we decided to stay. They have a limited choice of food mainly breakfasts, sandwiches and cake but we were not put off. My husband ordered the full cooked breakfast which was very nice if not over generous and I order the special of French toast grilled cheese and ham sandwich. It was French toast but the cheese and ham had not been grilled and were cold inside. The ham was straight out of a packet and the cheese sliced very thinly. It was not a bad meal just not as described on the specials board. Unfortunately my husband found the tea very weak which was a disappointment as he likes strong tea.

Another enjoyable visit to the Holland Arms. Usual friendly welcome and great service. We shared a duck starter from the specials board, amazing, especially the sauce. We then had lamb and steak as our mains. Both meats were delicious as were the accompanying vegetables. Good choice of wine (I enjoyed the Malbec). Couldn’t resist a bread and butter pudding for dessert - even though full. Look forward to our next visit - probably one of the Christmas meals now being advertised. Very reasonable bill.
