This was our first meal out after lockdown and what an excellent meal it was. Our Sunday roast was delicious as was Mum’s scampi & chips. The desserts were equally tasty. The service was very cheerful and prompt. We wish everyone at the White Horse a successful summer and beyond. Thankyou

Quite possible the best Rump Steak I have ever had, and only £12.95, with a free beer! Other meals are just as reasonable, last Wednesday 21st of October, great atmosphere with the locals, Beer is always well looked after, with first class table service.

Had an evening meal here, the service was very good and the bar area was also nice with the log fire. However the meal was extremely disappointing. The menu was very sparse with about 4 items to choose from. I ordered a steak pie and mash, it was very bland and it was a very small portion with no vegetables, I had finished the meal in about 5 minutes. It was also very expensive for something I could have just cooked at home, we will not be returning.

We came across this pub whilst staying in Minety over Xmas and we are so glad we did. The staff were so friendly, we were a family of 3 with a young child and he was made to feel very welcome. We ate here twice and it was good old honest food, really fresh and well priced. The locals were also really friendly, will definitely be back next time we are passing.

Lovely pub overlooking a photogenic pond so it would be rude not to sit outside. My wife had a bacon brie and red currant baguette, I had the chipolato sausage toasted wholemeal sandwich with whole grain mustard mayonnaise. Both were very tasty and well cooked. Washed down with a couple of excellent pints of Tribute ale. Only down side the seating is a little old.

Visited the Vale of the White Horse for lunch as a mid-week treat - and what a treat it was. We received a very warm welcome from staff and the owner. There was a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere so we settled down with a glass of wine to enjoy our food. My husband ordered the Gravalax of Trout which was amazingly good. The chef apparently prepares the fish himself. I had the burger - came with chips, onion rings, coleslaw and salad and was very tasty. It was great value - we will definitely be coming back and can thoroughly recommend it!

Discovering a real Pub Jewell in the heart of a county full of so called fashionable or trendy or visionary pubs is so pleasing . We came across The Vale of The White Horse by chance and boy oh boy was it a hugely well worth discovery . The owners and staff could not have been more welcoming and kind. We sat outside on the balcony with real countryside views and enjoyed a wonderful Lunch created by their brilliant Chef. The Gravalax of Trout was sensational , The Spicey Chicken Salad left my chum speechless, If The Vale Burger has been a girl , my other chum would have married her!! The Vale is very supportive of local farmers so our 8oz Rump Steak blew my socks off it was so beautifully cooked and tasted divine !! We all tucked into a wickedly naughty and delightfully fattening Homemade Dark and White Chocolate Brownie served with a Dark Chocolate Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream Washed down with two bottles of House White we finally left after two very very happy hours . We all recommend The Vale of The White Horse , it being a knockout pub!!! Will we be returning ?? You bet we will . What a great discovery !!

When entering via the car park you climb up a flight of stairs to the bar/ restaurant which looks out onto a spacious terrace with views of the surrounding countryside. We only wanted a snack and were surprised by the deletion on offer. We'll presented and ample portions prepared while we soaked up the atmousphere. Pleasant staff and good value good and beverage. Friendly, slightly shabby pub. We called in with 5 minutes to spare for ordering food on a Sunday. All fine, if unremarkable. Outside eating area is nice, could do with a bit of 'prettying up'. Large chess set outside, would be so easy to paint up a 'board' on to the patio slabs and would be a nice feature.

Visited this evening for a quick meal on the way home. I cannot speak highly enough of the food, staff and general ambiance. This is a truly traditional great English pub restaurant. All of our food was cooked to order and made fresh. The portion sizes were more than ample, neither my partner or I were able to finish our mains and the staff were incredibly attentive. What really made the visit was how friendly the locals in the bar were. None of the awful silence when an stranger walks in. Instead we were met with a smile and some pleasant chat. I would recommend The Vale of the White Horse to anyone. You truly cannot beat home cooked food served with care. A must visit! We have booked for Sunday lunch tomorrow!

Remembered seeing this pub as we drove to Cotswold Water Park and as all the restaurants around there were so busy we decided to venture elsewhere. The restaurant welcomes dogs which was a bonus as we had ours with us and they provided water for them without the need to ask. The food choice was great and a good vegetarian selection including a veggie special which was a nice surprise. The food was very good, fresh and tasty. The portions were large and some of the extras a nice twist such as the curried tartare sauce. I would definitely recommend and will go again when we next visit without question. If I had to pick one thing to improve, with all the food being so fresh the onion rings weren’t great.

There is nothing nicer than to come across by chance , a rather special and almost secret Pub. I was driving on the B4040 from Malmesbury to Cirencester when I spotted this rather elegant and rather reclusive Inn a few miles from Cricklade an imposing small town with a history that goes back to Roman days. The Vale Of The White Horse looked incredibly inviting so with an hour to kill where better to stop for Lunch . I loved the place . The food was really fresh and everything was locally produced . The welcome I received was wonderful and after a pint of rather challenging local beer I was all ready to tuck into a very yummy Lunch . Trouble is I forget what I ate though I can assure you that is was very very good. The Vale overlooks a pretty lake and come Spring I think Lunch beside it will be very enticing . Next time I’m down from London I have another date !! Where ?? The Vale Of Course !!!!

A colleague and I were down in the area on business for a few weeks and had to make more than one visit in the time we were down there. The building had character, the prices were reasonable and the drinks were good. The landlord was very friendly every time we were there, but the only thing need remembering is the food. Without a word of exaggeration, it serves the best pub food I have ever eaten. The chunky chips stand out especially as being soft and fluffy on the inside yet ridiculously crispy on the outside, just the perfect combination, I'm assuming they might have been blanched then fried but whatever was done needs to be kept the same. The burger in particular was very good, full of flavour. And the puddings are worth a try if you have time to make some room after the main (generous portion sizes). Even the little touch of a choice of chocolates after the meal tops it off. Overall, a fantastic pub with friendly staff and outstanding food, only downside is the location which is a little out in the sticks, but there is plenty of parking, would definitely visit again if In the area.

I passed this pub several times and thought it was time to give it a try. It's clearly loved by the regulars and the welcome was both warm and friendly. The restaurant was pretty quiet, being a Sunday evening and the food was served promptly. The pie was pleasant and wholesome although lacked any accompanying vegetables, which I found a little surprising. It was tasty although didn't live up to the "fine dining" promised on the external signs. More than adequate, pleasant environment and good value overall

We wanted to try somewhere new so went for a bit of a drive on Sunday evening, and hit upon this pub. The menu didn't provide much choice, just five or six basic pub food items like cod, scampi, steak etc. Not sure whether there was a specials board as well, if so I didn't notice it.Some of the things other reviewers have enjoyed eating certainly weren't on the main menu. We had cod and scampi, both with French fries, and both were perfectly ok pub food, but nothing particularly exciting.Service was friendly, atmosphere ok - it was fairly quiet when we were there early evening, and I'm sure would liven up later. Overall, quite satisfactory but nothing to really justify repeating the 40 mile round trip.

We came across this pub after a wet cycle ride in the area, and wanted somewhere warm and comforting for a late lunch. We weren't disappointed! The unusual building is interesting in itself (read their website for a history) but of course the food and beer were the most enticing things there, and both were excellent. My husband found the real ale one of the best he's ever had, and he is something of an expert on the subject. His fish and chunky chips and my chicken and noodle stir fry couldn't have been better. It has a big parking space therefore we didn't have any issue parking our car. The ambience was nice and homely. The staff was very welcoming and polite. Most importantly, the food was delicious. We ordered soup to start with. It was a cauliflower and carrot soup which was thick and appetizing. We followed it up with tastiest cottage pie and a Brie pastry puff. The only disappointment was the pizza we ordered for the kids. You can stay away from the kids menu. Overall, great place...will love to return!

I only went in for a couple of drinks, and my friend bought a bowl of chips too. When attempting to pay up front I was told that a card payment under £10 would incur a 50p charge, that's kind of crazy in this day and age anyway, most places concerned with customer service will waver this. Anyway, I started a tab. The chips took 45 minutes so we had to remind them at which point they said they forgot and the chips came straight out. When leaving I settled the tab and the barman couldn't find the bill, so I had to tell him what I had. The chips weren't on there so I decided to be honest and let them know, bringing the bill to £9.95. Without the barman telling me, I received the 50p charge, bringing it to £10.45; I was amazed! They couldn't even bring it up to the £10 to avoid the charge! All this was done with not necessarily grumpy service, but very solemn and unfriendly. They have lost my custom, I won't be going back.

We ( a party of four ) arrived around 13.30 for lunch having booked. The restaurant was deserted apart from our group and the bar was also deserted. We all chose the pea soup which was great and came with two slices of DECENT bread this course was enjoyed by all and tended to " fill us up " For mains three of us ordered smoked haddock with poached egg and the writer opted for the beef.A minor disappointment was registered with the fish course which was accompanied by a HARD egg. One wonders why a chef would serve up a hard poached egg !! especially when the place was deserted. The writer chose the beef which was nicely cooked and plentiful, due to partaking of the soup and bread the writer was beaten on quantity. Neither of our group could find room for the excellent choice of sweets. The slight disappointment with the poached eggs will not prevent us from returning as the staff are friendly and the menu is varied and the prices reasonable. We vowed to request soft poached eggs 0n our next visit.

Just come back from our fourth visit to the pub/restaurant. I think that my two and a half year old granddaughter summed up the food well after she tasted her home made pizza - yummy. The adult food is just as good. I have been twice in the evening and now twice for Sunday lunch and cannot fault the quality of the food and presentation, service or the friendliness of the staff. There always seems to be a good atmosphere in the pub with many of the locals drinking some of the quality beer they sell. For sunny days there is a terrace where you can sit idly in the sun and overlook the lake whilst enjoying the good beer or you can just sit in the garden. There is ample parking and you can play darts or skittles. Great pub/restaurant

We visit the Vale quite often, for both business and personal visits. The host, Jamie, is friendly and cares passionately about the food and drink he serves. There are specials each day - a special pie, a special risotto, a special sausage, etc as well as the "standard" menu items. My husband usually has the burger - enormous, home made from excellent beef. Yesterday we had burger, local ham egg and chips (philistine, I know!) and our companions had the special pie and a warm pigeon, brie and bacon salad. The choice of beers and ciders is impressive, and Jamie knows his beers and can recommend one that matches your taste and your menu choice. I'd married my wife during an extended overseas holiday towards the end of last year, so apart from a lunch with a couple of friends on our wedding day, we'd not had a big celebration. As my wife's birthday anniversary was on 16th February we thought that it would be nice to have some sort of joint celebration, so we chose The Vale of the White Horse. From the moment we contacted The vale and made our wishes known we received friendly, courteous, and efficient service. Nonetheless I was a little edgy as the event neared, as we'd asked our guests - 33 of them, besides ourselves - to make their own choices from The Vale's a la carte menu. Neither of us need have worried, as everything went smoothly - all the dishes were well cooked and served hot, and the staff who attended us were cheerful throughout. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the input of the Vale's staff ensured that it was a happy occasion. We'd recommend it to anyone, and will be visiting it again later this week with friends who were unable to join us on our big day. If in the vicinity of Minety (near Malmesbury) and wish to lunch or dine we doubt that you'll be disappointed with the Vale.

We were part of a party of about 34 guests, and, never having been to this place before, we were amazed at how well they catered for this number for a sit down meal, which involved a large range of choices, special requests & diets. The choices we made turned out to be very good indeed - the steak was the best we have ever tasted. The portions were extremely generous, and the service was pleasant, attentive and prompt. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble, and the only minus, in my view, was the room - in order to seat the number of people, we were downstairs, near the skittle alley, so the room was a little lacking in atmosphere. However, this is the only reason why I have not given an "excellent" rating.

Thank you to everyone who made our day so fantastic. A big big thank you to Jamie the landlord, Nikki the bar manager and Chris the head chef, we had such a great experience. The staff approached every task and request with a smile and could not have been more helpful which allowed us to have a stress-free day..Nikki took our booking and from there arranged and orchastrated every minor detail. The meal, in the evening, was of an extremely high standard with the kitchen serving winter vegetable soup followed by a choice of chicken and bacon or steak and ale pies with a light pastry top. All dishes were homemade, delicious and made with the finest ingredients. The cost was very reasonable which allowed us to include all the tiny details that made the day so perfect, such as three glasses of champagne per person and an evening buffett. Overall, I would reccomend The Vale Of The White Horse to anyone looking to have a wonderful experience whether its a meal with the family, a wedding day or a drink with friends by the lakeside. Thank you again to all at the vale!!

Plenty of parkingStaff always seem friendly enoughFood is average, nothing to write home about but if you want a quick bite and a chat with friends it does the job. Pricing is about average, though puddings seem a bit expensive. Atmosphere and decor is alright.

A super place for a drink with friends upstairs.....however, a disappointing visit recently with a family gathering where the food was served on the bar top by unhappy, bored looking staff. I am told it was pricey too. It's a shame because there was so much scope for this to have been presented more professionally and to be greated in a more welcoming manner

I have never written anything on TripAdvisor before, but often use it to read the reviews of others, so in the interests of alerting others to my family's recent awful experience with the Vale, I felt compelled to write this.As my Father was born in Minety and lived here all his life, it only seemed fitting to hold his wake here following the devastating event of losing him earlier this month. As a family, we have been customers of the Vale for years, and have held a number of large gatherings here, including birthday parties and my late Uncle's wake also. Particularly poignant, was the fact that we held my Father's last birthday party here, almost exactly one year ago.On this occasion, our budget dictated that I had pre-ordered only a small selection of refreshments, as well as one (increased to two at the Manager's suggestion) bottles of Greek brandy; a favourite of my Father's, and the perfect drink for our toast to him.I knew there would be a significant mark up on these, (66% profit, according to the Manager) and was prepared to pay this; everyone has to make a profit, and I do appreciate that. What I did not expect however, was to be presented with a bill that not only included charges for items I had not even requested, but also to be charged per HEAD for the aforementioned toast, bringing my total bill up to over £400- for three trays of sandwiches and two bottles of brandy. When you ordinarily buy a bottle of wine or spirit from a bar to share, do you then pay per glass? Of course not. I was of course shocked by this, and challenged it with the Manager, who was immediately defensive. He refused to discuss the bill with me and instead took himself and his bar staff away behind a locked door, stating that he would discuss it with me tomorrow. He was rude, dismissive and completely unprepared to consider our point of view. Treating us in this way would be bad enough in any circumstance, but this was a WAKE. We were all grieving and this was without doubt the hardest day my family has ever had to face; to add to that the absolute disrespect we were shown as well as a complete lack of empathy or compassion, made this day, if possible, even worse. My Mother was left in tears, and we took her away from the situation, utterly appalled.Several of our family and friends also tried to seek an explanation and justification of this extortionate bill, and were met with utter rudeness and a flippancy that was absolutely disgraceful. On highlighting the regular custom of several of the couples and families present, my Godfather was told by the Manager- "Well, I've never seen you before in my life." Whatever happened to customer service?!?!Furthermore, he implied that he was doing us some kind of favour by not charging for room hire- forgive me, but as this particular bar is not even open on a typical weekday afternoon, would the 80+ customers spending at said bar over a 4 hour period not make this more than worth the pub's while?! (And that's without even mentioning the inflated bar prices.)In the end, my Mother-in-Law settled the bill for us, purely to leave the matter resolved and to spare us any further hassle and upset. Several days later, the Manager tried to make contact with me, requesting to meet to "discuss this matter further and understand each other's point of view." He also stated that he did not feel we had been overcharged and was concerned at the fact that some of the comments made had been witnessed by a number of other regular customers and were causing "gossip and discussion." Unfortunately, this served to demonstrate how he was only actually concerned about the impact on him and his business, rather than the impact this situation had on my family. I have no desire to meet with him- quite frankly, we have far more important things to face at the moment. The Vale is a small country establishment, and sadly the only pub left in Minety- the Manager would do well to remember what keeps his business going. My family, as well as our extended family and friends, will never visit the Vale again. Failing to recognise the value of your customers is one thing, but on this occasion the owner and Manager also managed to disrespect the memory of my Father, by making a devastating day even more difficult for us. I cannot tell you how disappointed and upset we all are. Such a shame.

Went here last week for a family occasion , which we won't be doing again trip hazard as you walk through into the bar (loose floor board) covered by a mat.The drinks were over priced as was the food for the qualityThe staff made us feel like we were hastening them when ever we ordered or requested anything and had to wait for far to long to have any service. The management were rude and non helpful and had no concern for our custom with a "I don't care attitude"If you are thinking of having a family outing or event beware !! Our very large family will not be going here again!!!Large local custom lost mainly down to very, very rude management !!

It had been a while since we had last eaten here (poor staff service) last time and was happily surprised by the choose / price on the menu, the pork back rips were nice but the curry was bland. Overall still a pleasant place to eat until it came to paying. After 15 minutes of standing at both bars and being ignored by the staff, I was only stopped from walking out and driving off by my wife, who had to ask another three times to pay! Got a sorry from I guess, the manger, who had no ideal why he was saying sorry for!Shame, because we are local and eat out a lot, as there are plenty of good pubs in the area.took the tip and left.

A dear friends funeral , a private function, and it seems a green light for the Manager/Proprietor of this establishment to exploit the situation .....or so he thought !Consider ; 2 bottles of 5 star Metaxa ordered days in advance for a toast ..... £15 a bottle wholesale you’re probably thinking, plus a healthy 66% profit (that’s what he claimed) and good old VAT, say £30 ?....well, try £70 a bottle ! yes £70 a bottle !!!!Sick opportunistic profiteering upon people at their most vulnerable ! and I haven’t even mentioned over the bar prices ! believe me I’ve had cheaper drinks than this Pub at five star hotels ,pool side and with waiter service !This fellow would do well to remember two golden rules of business “Honest reputation is everything” and “The customer is always right “ .....I now know at least 50 local people that are never likely to frequent this establishment again..............Like the title says “YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED” !...................................................................

Being frequent happy visitors of the Vale of the White Horse, and after being let down by our wedding reception venue we decided to ask The Vale whether they would consider letting us have our reception with them in their function room. Everything went perfectly, we met with Jamie (the manager) many times during the months which followed and planned menu's and wine lists. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We had 66 sit down guests during the day, and up to 100 for the evening. The food was fantastic, and we got many comments on the great food & amazing portion sizes which were so much better than your average wedding breakfast. The atmosphere was great, we had our own band and then a disco later on. The staff couldnt have done more. I dont have a single bad thing to say about it, and i am so happy we came to the Vale for our wedding.

Fill up the car ,fire up the sat-nav,and set off to the vale for an out of town dining experience to remember.Look out for the flag in the searchlight,a sign you're getting close . Once the bentley is parked, take the stairs up to the village bar or restaurant.if you like your food with dogs, ale and much lively banter then the bars for you,but if a more formal or perhaps romantic setting is preferred then take the restaurant route. A wonderful terrace is the third option on those al fresco days .As a regular it was a pleasure to take guests down to the vale to enjoy a raging early friday evening session complete with cod wrapped in bacon with rosti potatoes, scampi and chunky chips along with several pheasent plucker ciders and cotswold spring stunner ale ,everything absolutely top-drawer, provided by staff who are warm and friendly (some would say lippy !) rather than fawning and servile. So if you like your pubs with personality, you could do a lot worse.....

Three of us arrived at the Vale of the White Horse at 2.05 on Thursday, expecting food service to have ended and assuming a packet of crisps would have to do for our lunch - we were amazed to be offered a range of interesting dishes, all with local connections. We all chose the marinaded spare ribs, which were served on the open air terrace, looking out over the pond and the squash court. What a lovely lunch! Very welcoming staff, very efficient service. A great find - we will be back!

On arrival inside we were met by a staircase, going upstairs, we were then gretted with an empty room. Hearin sound we followed through to the bar. now this we liked. So dont be put off by the arrival and lack of people about. Upstairs and to the left.Food was great, fairly large. We didnt think we would be allowed ala carte in the lunch period and especially not in the bar. this was not the case. which was exactly what we wanted.service was good, polite and fast. nice setting. furniture and atmosphere was fab.

I went to this restaurant for the first time with my partner for a meal together. As soon as we arrive we were greated by friendly staff who welcomed us in. They then took us to our seat and throughout the meal catered to our every need. The staff were extremely polite during the whole meal and were always checking that everything was ok. The food was exceptional. It was lovely big portion sizes, although you could have smaller if you wanted. There was also a large choice to suit everyone. My partner and I didn't have chance to look at the desert menu as we had filled up on starter and the main course. I will definatly be returning and recommending to others. The evening was fantastic here.

I visited the vale with a few buisness colleagues, i had been meaning to visit it as i frequenlty pass it on the b4040 on route to work it looks so cosy from the outside and its just as inviting within. I stopped for a light lunch and was amazed with the offers we had to choose from daily £5.50 specials were tempting, and i had a beautiful pigeon salad accompanied with a cheeky glass of house white. The staff were so friendly they made me want to stay all day, however work never ends! I would definatly revist this pub and prehaps at a time when i can fully take in all it has to offer.

Very accomodating staff - we arrived on a Friday evening without a reservation but they managed to seat us in the cosy restaurant area near the log fire. Not an extensive menu and wine list but there's definitely something for everyone and once it arrived it's clear the focus is on quality and not quantity. Everything we had was yummy - I had the butternut squash soup followed by the fillet steak and my partner the duck terrine again followed by fillet steak. We like our steaks cooked very differently and they were served exactly how we requested them. Definitely go and try. Lovely!

Arrived expecting to find a pub and found it had changed hands two weeks earlier and reopened as an Indian restaurant - we were obviously among the very first customers! We were given a warm welcome, the food was absolutely excellent and the service attentive. I would highly recommend the Goan fish curry, mild and deliciously seasoned.
