Not the best Sunday roast. The beef was cooked pink but was very chewy. The veg was tasty enough but pretty meagre and another roast potato or two wouldn’t have gone amiss. At £17.95 not gastro pub prices and there’s plenty of choice for those who don’t want a roast but I’d certainly spend more elsewhere for a special occasion. Great service though.

We waited around 35 minutes after placing our order for a burger and fish and chips. When I enquired at the bar a lady went to enquire in the kitchen. I was then told that, "... the order didn't go through." They said they were prioritising it. 25 minutes later we are still waiting. No attempt at customer service, such as free drinks while we wait, not so much as a packet of crisps to silence the hunger pangs. I don't even remember getting an apology.

I have visited the Milk Churn on several occasions in the past and have been very happy with both the food and service. The surroundings are very pleasant with a great atmosphere and the staff are friendly. Unfortunately my visit today was rather different. I booked a table for 4 ( myself, husband and 2 adult sons) at 2pm and we arrived on time. Our order for both food and drinks was taken within the first 5 mins and drinks arrived promptly. However, our meals did not arrive for another 50 mins after asking how long it was going to take. We all ordered a Roast which when it arrived, I could only say looked like a child’s portion. 1 half of a small carrot and 1 half of a parsnip, both soft and over cooked, on top of 2 slices of thinly cut meat. The “ veg” was I think a spoonful of chopped leek with processed peas. The Yorkshire and gravy was lovely but the roast potatoes were mushy which I left. My husband asked if he could have them as he was starving. I suggested we have dessert to fill us up but noting that they were approximately £6.50 each and seeing the size being given to other customers ,we decided to go to Tesco and pick up some cheesecake for £2.75!! I do not normally complain, but feel on this occasion I needed to. Today was a rare occasion for all the family to get together and sadly the meal was a massive disappointment, especially after expecting it as on other occasions, to be really enjoyable.

We have visited the Milkchurn a couple of times before and had an enjoyable meal on those occasions so we were expecting the same this time. Unfortunately this was not the case. The food portions across all 4 meals were appalling as the food just about filled half the plate. Both my meal and my friend’s meal had 3 mouthfuls of mash (if that) on the plate, the same for the veg!! My sausages were awful and looked barely cooked! The food has really gone down hill but the prices remain the same! The service was good, really friendly staff. They apologised when we complained and agreed with us. Nice interior. Food shocking though!!!

Service was great but we felt the food was over priced and poor quality. 4 of us ordered "pink beef" (as advertised on the menu) and 1 chicken Sunday roasts. The beed dinners came and we were given steak knives and we certainly needed them. 4 half slices of beef... not pink and really tough n chewy. 3 smallish roast potatoes, vegetables consisted of a small spoonful of tinned peas mixed in with chopped leeks which had no flavour, half a carrot & 1 piece of parsnip. The yourshire pudding was nice as was the gravy. We looked at our plates thinking we'd been given the children's plate. You could order cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets at £4.50 a pop. This meager plate of food cost £17.95 each. Overpriced low quality food. Certainly won't bother going there again. Off to cook some tea now as we're hungry!!

We were staying at the Travelodge in Melksham and booked a table at the Milk Churn for their excellent value £10 roast available after 5pm. When we arrived we were shown to our table and the waitress informed us that no roasts were available. It was 5.30pm on a Sunday! Very poor, Milk Churn, someone really messed up. No roasts, no stars. We chose not to stay, driving 10 minutes to the Toby Carvery in Trowbridge where we enjoyed a excellent roast.

Whilst staying at the Travel Lodge we called for evening food. The Sunday lunch was priced at £17.99 on the menu however on the website there was a special offer of Sunday lunch for £10 after 5pm. We paid nearly £36 for two beef Sunday lunch, one pint and one wine. If the food was £20 then the drinks were £16 very expensive. The Sunday dinner was very small with just one carrot, one parsnip and handful of peas and cabbage. The beef whilst it was paper thin, was extremely chew! If it wasn’t for the 4 small roast potatoes we would have been starving. Totally not recommended. The staff were friendly and the place is beautiful inside, shame about the quality of the food. We don’t bother with a pudding as thought tea and biscuits back at the hotel was better value.

when we entered we were quickly seated and told that a server would be with us as soon as possible which happened on entering we noticed that there were signs everywhere stating if you had a allergy to report to the staff which i did but was told that they could not remove it from the meal as they had been told by management that they could not remove any item from the menu they offered to bring me an extra plate so that i could remove the offending item myself , but there would have been cross contamination to the other items on the meal that i would have ordered it seems to me extreemly strange that the signs say one thing but you cannot remove the offending item from the stated menu so why have these signs about if you cannot change the menu all i wanted was to remove one item from the dish and not even to replace it with anything else this is the only time i have ever been told this most eateries i have visited have complied with my request not to have the item on my plate , what is the problem with your eateries ?

Haven't been to the Milk Churn for a long time, the menu never really inspired us and we'd had poor experiences with H&W pubs elsewhere. However, we're glad we popped in.. the menu had plenty of choice, what we had was delicious (although hubby had asked for a medium steak and got more medium/rare) and the atmosphere was great. We normally frequent another local pub, which attracts more families, so it was nice to come somewhere that felt a bit more 'grown up' as it were. I have frequented this pub many times particularly when I visit family in the area and for various other events in the past. The food is usually of a good standard, even though the service can waver a bit but has never been bad. However on my last visit on the 17/10/2024 I received a Parking Charge Notice of £100 despite following all the visible instructions on entry. On appeal I was informed I overstayed the 1 hour allowance. Now it was not clear that there was a duration limit for patrons and the only reason we were there that long is due to the service on our meal exceeded an hour and a half. This is not acceptable and I will be taking my business elsewhere the future. If you need to drive to the venue I suggest you also look at alternatives based on this information. I see from others responces you claim "4 hours free parking". Maybe you need to inform your Parking Inforcement company of that. As they are costing you customers and reputation! I have also seen un uptick in junk and spam communications so it is clear they have also sold my details on too. Thank you Again!!

My Mother visited Wednesday 16th October. Waitress asked about allergens and my mum said she had an allergy to lemon/citrus/vinegar and requested no lemon in her prawn sandwich or vinegarette on her salad. The waitress replied with “it is what it is and we can’t change stuff” Her sandwich came with a huge slice of lemon on on her plate…the waitress again replied..”we aren’t allowed to change ingredients and it has to be plated up the correct way” This is not the correct way to deal with allergen process and common sense would have told the chef to not put the lemon slice on the plate. Utterly bizarre.

There is a BUT to this honest review....Absolutely love this place, been numerous times over several years. Staff friendly, dog friendly, good atmosphere. BUT... being honest..... Such a shame they no longer serve value for money food. Took friends who were visiting from Germany. The meals were so much smaller than they used to be and very expensive. We are happy to pay these prices normally but what we received was truly disappointing. A piece of fish with a 'few' chips and peas. A tiny and quite tough steak with a bit of 'greenery' a handful of chips. A pasta dish with a weeny weeny salad. 4 drinks and it came to over £85. The fish was quite strong flavoured and my husband did not enjoy it. No staff member came to ask if all was OK, so we did not get chance to give our feedback. Definitely gone down hill. As we said staff were lovely but we think the company need to look at value for money to ensure people return. Hope this reaches the management.

Hall & Woodhouse, you’ve lost the plot! Your policy on allergens has ruined our special meal. Two members of the party purely asked for an item (ice cream) to be removed from a pudding and your staff were made to tell them this wouldn’t be possible; this is not their fault. Please use moderation when designing policies so that it does not impact on the experience of the diner whilst being practical and allergen aware. The diner should be allowed to make changes to their meal, e.g., ice cream or sorbet instead of custard, and not be refused when it has nothing to do with their allergy or intolerance. You’ve ruined our evening.

We know for a fact on the 01/08/24 we entered our registration on the pub touchscreen, on contacting the pub the staff were less than helpful unfortunately on this occasion and was adamant that the car park for there premises has absolutely nothing to do with them, though it's there car park. Very disappointing being that we have spent a fair bit of money here. Don't get us wrong the meals are great here and the staff are great when it comes to drinks and the food. Disappointing meals, while they were tasty, there were a few issues (some resolved eventually after discussion with the, very pleasant, duty manager) Large portion of smothered chicken was tepid at best, and we had difficulty it getting the staff's attention. It was returned to be reheated, but when the plate was returned, the skinny fries were cold. Another 5 minute delay to replace the skinny fries. In fairness to, Sam, the duty manager, this was resolved to our satisfaction. I had the fish pie, which was tasty and very hot, I was underwhelmed by the amount of fish and surprised by the excess amount of leeks/ greens in the rather small serving, given the price of the food.

Four of us and our dog stopped on a Saturday afternoon. It was reasonably busy, but by no means rammed. Beer and wine ok. Ordered food at bar. Starters arrived promptly and were good. More drinks, but no sign of our mains. After an hour and having seen others who ordered later being served we asked where our meals were. We were told that it was due to them being busy and they’d be out soon. We think they had been forgotten. Two fish pies arrived and they were good. However, when the steaks arrived we were underwhelmed. One was about three inches square and rather than medium it was rarer than the other “rare” one. Also the mushroom on each plate was pitiful. Steak was sent back and replacement was bigger, but still not cooked properly and not finished. The rare steak was ok at one end, but the thicker end was rare to blue. We did get a full refund on the returned steak and the waitress was very apologetic. Disappointing visit after a promising start. Surely, cooking a steak properly is a formality?

Met a friend here as was passing through from Kent. The two young ladies that served us were so helpful & friendly. A definite asset to your team. The food was good. Will be back next time I’m over this way. Thank you

Current burger offer on a Wednesday is great value for money. Tasty food and well presented. Not the first time we've eaten here so no surprise this visit was enjoyable again.

I am afraid I cannot give our experience at this restaurant more than two stars. We were a party of six. The surrounds were pleasant enough, but the food and slow service were a real let down. I and my wife ordered the beer battered fish and chips. For myself, I can honestly say that it was the worst plate of fish and chips I have ever had; and I have certainly had many. The fish I would say was about 70 per cent overcooked batter, and the actual fish inside was so dry as to be completely inedible. The plate that my wife had was not much better. The burgers that the rest of our party had was enjoyed much more; but the experience as as a whole was such a disappointment. I have never posted a bad restaurant review before, but I just had to on this occasion.

We went to have a meal to celebrate mum’s birthday, firstly there was not much Choice if you are gluten free for mum, I ordered the bear battered fish When it cam out looked good, it turned out it was mostly batter very little fish all of which was very chewy no flavour I was vey disappointed, although My wife and my mum did enjoy there meals. We had dessert which was ok however two of the desserts came with a scoop of ice cream it was more like half a scoop

The food was lovely, pub was spacious and well set out and staff really friendly. Having driven past loads of times, it was great to finally visit and we weren’t disappointed.

Menu could do with updating, but nice informal atmosphere and good staff. Overall, it's a bit pricey for a casual lunch

Halfway between the Cathedral and the bus stop for Stonehenge. Very nice staff and guests. Had a hot soup and sandwich which were great.

Nice enough room but no one turned up for breakfast. Waited for an hour in empty pub, gave up and left.

I absolutely loved my stay from start to finish, it was just me and the dog. Warm welcome, from reception, swift check in and showed up to my room. I was in the Library room which was so big, spotlessly clean, and a lovely big cozy bed. For a Tuesday night the bar was busy which is always great to see, I sat with two lovely gents on one of the long tables. Great wine selection, and tasty menu and I opted for the Miso Cod, which was absolutely delicious, massive chunky Cod portion with perfectly cooked crushed potatoes and tenderstem brocoli, i could literally eat that dinner every evening. Early night for me, the room is above the bar and you can hear every word spoken below, however as service ended so did any noises and I slept peacefully. Again great variety at breakfast and warm welcome, I would love to return.

Called the Bell whilst in the area to book Sunday lunch if possible at late notice. Not a problem even though sounded very busy. On arrival we were will received and it was busy as expected. Lunch was superb with excellent freshly cooked vegetables. Service from waitress and staff was attentive throughout, with large tables also dining at the same time. All round good choice of venue.
