I was so looking forward to Valaria after seeing all the hype on social media. Don’t get me wrong, the interior is aesthetically pleasing. We were originally sat at a table next to the door and were moved to a better area. It took some time for service and to place orders then a goooood while for our food to arrive. When it did arrive, the croque Monsieur looked lovely and I went for the salmon Benedict— now, for £14 it was a small portion & quite frankly didn’t look anything fancy. When I cut into the poached eggs they were both well done. I tried to get the attention of a member of staff for some time to no avail leaving me to get up and quickly get the attention of the greeter at the door. I asked if I could get my eggs runny she just replied “ok”, no apologies— I know that it wasn’t her cooking them but her customer service was shocking. Maybe she was just having a bad day, as she looked like she didn’t want to be there and her attitude reflected it, however, upon reading most recent reviews the service appears to be poor so who knows. When I received my replacement it was just put down to me with a “here you go” no apologies, sorry about your wait etc. This time around I was given more of the beetroot hollandaise which made the dish less dry. However, if I didn’t know that it was made with beetroot then I really wouldn’t have been able to say that it contained beetroot, it was rather flavourless. We ordered more drinks and both times the glasses came out warm and the waitress stated they were short on glasses? Perhaps this was the wait?! I was quite fed up by this time, however the cakes DID look good so we caved in and got some. My friend went for the sticky toffee biscoff and enjoyed and I had the cherry choux bun and I must say it was delicious and stuffed with cream. They did, again, take a while to arrive at our table which I couldn’t understand as they only needed to be put on a side plate- I would have been quicker doing it myself. I wish that I settled for a couple of cakes instead. I definitely would not do brunch again, and I know they do evening tapas now and my experience today has put me off. If anything, I would get a take away cake. Also, there’s an added 10% tip charge— I always tip anyways but what i have noticed in places which have this automatically added to the bill the service lacks as if it’s just expected now as I doubt many ask for it to be removed.

Beautiful cafe and the food was delicious. Service was mostly good apart from one awkward waitress who stared intently and kept giggling at us most of the time we were there. The place was quiet when we arrived, only one other couple in who turned out to be potential influencers who ruined the whole experience for us. They were very loud and constantly taking photos, pointing their phones right at us whilst we were eating. I get the place is instagram friendly, but it’s very intrusive.

Terrible service. -- I walked in with my friend, ordered a portion of soup to take away, the first staff charged me 8 pounds. She did not tell me they provide a meal deal:sandwich + soup+cup of coffee /tea only 10 pounds. My friend saw her friend sitting in having brunch, and talking with her friend. --A few minutes later, the staff took a bowel of leek and potato soup from the kitchen and poured the soup into two cups and gave them to me. --And my friend went to order, their other staff told her that they served 10 pounds meal deal. My friend told me they have meal deal. I asked the 2nd staff if I can pay extra two pounds to get the sandwich, she said yes but only this time. so I picked a sandwich, and waiting for my friend outside. --Another few minutes later, their 2nd staff told my friend I owed their money because I only paid 2pounds,my friend called me to come in the restaurant to explain. --I came in and told them I already paid 8 pounds for the soup and I also paid extra 2 pounds for the sandwich to make up the 10 pounds meal deal. --They changed their words and told me I need pay another extra 8 pounds for the soup and they would give me a cup of coffee because they gave me two cups of soup. I got confused, I paid 8 pounds for one portion of soup, they gave me two cups, I thought that two cups were for one portion, their 1st staff brought the menu and argued their soup is 8 pounds. I got two cups so I need pay extra 8 pounds. --I asked if we can call the police to resolve, they said no. --Then they changed their words again, they said the other cup of soup was for my friend, I need give it to my friend, but my friend was still waiting for her two cups of soup which was still making in the kitchen. --I told them I can give the cup back to them and they can bin it but it was not for my friend, don't mislead the thing. And I asked what kind of soup is sold for 8 pounds for a takeaway cup? --It was really terrible experience from this restaurant, they are cheating and shifting the blame to the customers, no responsibility - - who can spend 8 pounds for just leek and potatoe soup except me? Their first staff should have told me they have the 10 pounds meal deal. --finally I did not pay another extra 8 pounds for the tiny cup of soup and gave it to them and asked them to bin it, but they finally said I can have it. They can't take it back

The food is 5* I would say it's a little cramed seating wise, our chairs and the table behind us were touching with no room to move. At first staff were a little frosty, rolling her eyes when she saw us with a pram, as we were a table of 4 adults plus a toddler, each table we asked about sitting at we were told were reserved or we couldn't sit there as it was a walk way... despite it having 2 table and 3 chairs at them. But by the end of our meal they were more friendly. When ordering food the young lady was still having an attitude and asked what do you want.... i ended up moving my chair to the end of our table which seemed to infuriate staff as I saw them talking behind the counter and pointing... I totally did not notice the 10% tip... if I had known I would have asked for it to be removed. £60 for our food and drink which was alot for what we had i feel. I wouldn't say this was a toddler friendly place.... the first highchair was broken amd missing pieces so couldn't strap my 1 yr old in, the next on worked but my little one got very upset having to move highchairs so.... it got a little stressful. A few other mums came in whilst we were sitting and were turned away due to there being no more room for highchairs or pushchairs.... Definitely needs less tables, give your customers space to mive and enjoy their meals without feeling cramped as your being greedy for custom.

Lovely setting, lovely looking food and friendly staff BUT, as many have said here service and food is disappointing. 1st there are far too many tables and chairs inside. We went for an afternoon tea and my wife constantly got bumped into by people trying to squeeze past, very annoying. When the food came it looked nice but flavours were weak and cakes /scones were microscopic. Only 1 cup of tea or coffee with afternoon tea and pay for extra (most places are free refills). Service was friendly but very slow. Table next to us got soup but it was sent back as cold, also a coffee order was wrong and sent back, not a good day for them but seemed to be the vibe service wise going on, so over all disappointing and they can do much better. Something not working in this place but can't put my finger on it. For us, there are more places you explore so probably won't return to this place.

Agreed with most recent reviews - place is overpriced and terrible service. We were £16 for a croissant and 2 coffees. Sure the croissants are massive but who needs much anyway, I'd rather a normal size for a normal price. Staff too busy chatting to each other whilst I could see my pastry sitting waiting to be taken to my table. I had to get up and ask them to bring it over. Won't be back

Valaria lacks that bit of something special you expect from a place with such high prices (£7 for a pastry or cake). Been a few times now and, beyond the aesthetics, it feels a bit lacklustre...too many tables squeezed in together and staff doing their best but short on experience which really undermines the aim of being high-end

Nice decor. Food is mediocre at best but the hot chocolate is really nice and I haven’t tried anything else like it in Glasgow. Service is mediocre too had to get up and get my own knife and fork and the food took forever to arrive. 30 minutes for pancakes seems somewhat excessive. Then of course you get the bill with the ever more popular automatic discretionary service charge. It was £2 so didn’t quibble it because the staff were nice enough but surely if you want to add an automatic service charge the service should be good? Even in McDonalds I don’t have to get my own cutlery! Anyway would probably skip this place and go elsewhere next time.

Went here for the first time for lunch. The food was ok, but £38.50 for 2 small sandwiches with soups and 2 small diet cokes was a bit pricey (included a 10% service charge which I wasn't expecting in a cafe - they always say it's 'optional' but they know most people won't dispute it out of politeness). Service was friendly but a little slack as we had to specifically ask for the basics like napkins, cutlery and condiments. We thought about getting a cake but not for £6/7. We're glad we tried it but we probably won't return because of the prices and the unwelcome service charge.

This lovely place has really gone down hill since first opening. Our first view visits were delightful but Iver the last few months standard's have slipped and seemingly continues to do so. Had to wait for longer than ideal to be acknowledged by a member of staff, no menu given, had to ask to order food, coffee and "hot" chocolate cold served cold. The food was nice as best, but certainly won't be back. As a company if you belive you merit high end prices you need to have staff trained in a way that reflects that.

I don’t visit cafes as often as I should, considering what I would do for a sweet treat; this French café in the west end of Glasgow reminded me of that. Valaria is gorgeous and intimate, perfect for couples or chats with the girls! The music choice really surprised me as it was more modern, but it still perfectly suited the quaint café. We were greeted and seated quickly despite being walk-ins and the waitresses were very attentive. They made sure to keep an eye on everyone in the event that they needed something. I found them all extremely kind and helpful. I ordered some fresh orange juice to drink and their focaccia BLT, which was enchanting. It tasted fresh and the waitresses even warmed it up for me. Despite thinking I would still want a nibble after the sandwich, it was surprisingly filling, and I felt amazing afterwards! My friend ordered a flat croissant with smashed avocado and poached egg, which was equally as nice as my meal, if not more so (I stole a bite). Of course, there is always room for dessert. We ordered two of their special Valaria cakes, the cherry and chocolate and the blueberry and lemon cake slices. This is what life is about; I could’ve eaten ten of both portions if given the opportunity. The bathrooms were also very lovely; it was one bathroom for all genders with an old-fashioned design and I was stunned. It was very clean, and the mirrors were perfect for selfies! I would definitely recommend this little café to everyone; its perfect for a quiet brunch and is only a short walk from Hillhead subway station.

Good food and service… but I think they must need to pay their staff better? As someone who does always tip, I was pretty unimpressed that they took it upon themselves to automatically add a 10% service charge to my bill, and then informed me that I would have to request they remove it if I didn’t want to pay it…? That’s really impolite. While I was happy to pay on principle for the service, I think it’s a (rude) hidden charge that’s being passed to customers and perhaps they should just pay their own staff better! The price is already quite high - paid £12 for once slice of French toast…? Won’t be back.

¡No volveré!

Then they overcharged by £35 ( total bill £59 for two soups and sandwiches ! ) and if I hadn’t been there to notice my elderly mother in law would have paid that accidental bill. Croissants were delicious (I had almond, YUM), and the hot chocolate to-die-for! Probably could have had the croissants warmed up, although this is likely down to us not actually asking for that. Would be back again as the rest of the pastries look amazing! Staff were so friendly and efficient too. To the other reviewer who complained about not getting a table after calling to say they were running just 5 minutes' late - you rocked up 20 minutes' late, what do you expect?

Went here today for the first time with 2 friends for brunch.. I didn’t know what to make of the menu really… strange mix of little dishes to order Tapas style. Nothing tasted bad .. but I wouldn’t rush back personally. £15 for 3 small dishes . Service was very slow.

Popped in for a snack purely due to proximity and what looked like nice croissants I had spied in the window. Had an almond croissant and a hot chocolate. Croissant was dense and heavy. Most of it was almond paste, which accounted for the weight, it was v. greasy and any layering of the pastry that had maybe existed, had likely been crushed because there was nothing to be seen. Hot chocolate was okay, although v. small and overly sweet. On a happier note, the two stars given are for the nice £9.50 pastrami sandwich had by my partner. Coffee was fine apparently. Very Instagrammable interior (if that's your thing) and staff were nice but wouldn't recommend if you have a sweet tooth and are in any way discerning.

I went Valaria today and was disappointed with the overall experience. The staff were very friendly on arrival and we got our food and drinks ordered quickly. The quality of the food was really good everything we had tasted amazing. However by the time we had finished eating and our plates had been cleared we had been there just less than hour and was informed that we only had 18 minutes left at the table and they would need it back. I had booked and no where on the booking did it say we would only have an hour and 15 minutes at the table. 5 minutes later we were then informed that they would actually need our table now and we would have to pay. Two of us hadn’t even finished our drinks and we were getting rushed away. I understand that if we were a walk in that they might need us to be quick but I booked this table and think 1 hour and 5 minutes is an unacceptable amount of time to tell someone they had leave. I am really disappointed in the whole experience as I was very much looking forward to coming and like I said the food was exceptional but I feel the whole experience was ruined.

This cafe could be fabulous. The staff are friendly and the carrot cake, I tasted, was delicious. It was disappointing to have the cake served on a saucer with a fork large enough to eat steak. Lift your game and buy cake forks and proper plates. Serve leaf tea and you will be first class.

My boyfriend and myself came for some lunch on a Saturday. We managed to book online before hand which I would recommend. We had a hot chocolate and a latte and we went for the 5 plates to share. The wee plates were ideal, not too much and not too little. The staff were also so lovely and attentive! We would definitely recommend and be returning!

The place was quite loud with music itself only. Decided to have the iced tea and blueberry matcha and it was okay but a bit overpriced for their “specialty drinks” given the amount also. Had their raspberry and lemon macaroons which the inside(lemon curd and raspberry jam/conserve and fresh raspberry) was lovely but the macaron itself was stale and definitely was not fresh. We shared one. All came to 16ish pounds so overall would say it was not worth it. We also sat in the back so had bad service and our experience of people being served first of whom had walked in after us definitely did not top it well.

I gave now been to Valaria x4 times in last few months. Food is pricey but delicious and high quality. Different with tapas style plates. Need to improve customer service..all 4 occasions very slow service..other tables served before me even though arrived afterwards. Feel like you are hindrance to staff. With the price of the menu plus paying for parking it adds to a high cost trip so I would expect exceptional customer service. Been to other brunch places in the area and got wonderful service…so Valaria you need to up your game!

Would not recommend the iced matcha latte from here. I ordered one and it was absolutely vile. The matcha was grey and grainy and not at all a vibrant green like it should be. Tasted like milk with a hint of green tea. However, cannot fault the staff they were very polite, and the actual cafe had lovely interior design.

We made a reservation at 11:30. As we were running late we called them to inform it will take 5 more minutes to visit the place. On the phone they told that, it is totally fine you can come in. Then we went at 11:50 and waited for 10 mins. Finally, rudely they said that we don’t have seats, if you want just sit outside. Worst experience we ever had

I've been here several times when it was the patisserie and always loved it. I went this weekend for the brunch and was disappointed. Changing it up to a brunch spot is a good idea in theory, but sadly, it is not well executed. Tapas style simply doesn't work with the layout; the tables are too small to cope with the myriad of small plates, and the selection of plates on offer is poor and didn't wow in terms of flavour. I had great plans for buying cakes and macarons to take home, but the cake selection, which is arguably what made Valaria popular to start with, has been cut down to almost nothing. So, a disappointing brunch experience, and I didn't bother buying anything to take away. Service staff were lovely but were too busy to be procide top notch service. Seemed to be a lot of staff behind the counter not doing much whilst a select few were run ragged on the floor. This made for longer waiting times, a cluttered table, and forgetting items. Plus: Parisian hot chocolate was delicious. Decor is beautiful. The staff doing table service were working very hard. I'd return if it went back to being a patisserie, but I won't be returning for brunch.

The most awful rude service we’ve encountered. Ignored whilst standing waiting for a table at lunchtime. We weren’t sure if we were to just sit and asked the waitress who was standing beside us but not acknowledging we were there, if we were just to grab a table? She said no, she would take us to a table…and then walked away. We stood for another few minutes and she came back, walked past and served someone else. The manager/owner then walked past and asked if he could help us. I said yes, we looking for a table and thought we were being attended to. He said “well she’s a bit busy right now”…we walked out. How places like this, such bad service can survive is beyond me. So rude, and if that’s the attitude of the manager or owner, than that feeds down to staff. Never got to sample the food, but with service that bad, we’ll never go near the place again anyway

This venue has decided that the pavement in front of their door is all for them, really, and they are happy forcing pedestrians into a busy Byres Rd road, especially at weekends when footfall is so high. How long until you are the cause of an accident? You happily alienate pedestrians like me who wouldn't dream of giving my money to a selfish inconsiderate establishment like yours.

What a weird experience! The place looks cute from the outside, once you step in you can see how cheaply and fast was made, that aside it's quite dirty, the floor would benefit from being actually cleaned once in a while. The playlist was absolutely disorienting, would be more fitting for a kid birthday party. I can't...Mambo N5 in a vintage kinda live love laugh place? Dear me.. oh well! The drink was ok, made with no interest but not the worst I had! The staff tho, I think it's their first job in front facing roles, or at all :/. They looked startled by the idea of talking to someone. Although I did leave giggling to the absurdity of the space which it kinda works in how bad it is? Will definitely not go back, but happy to have experienced the absurdity.

It felt as though I was transported to a French patisserie. The ambience is lively, the interior decor is beautiful and “Instagrammable”. We went for brunch and they recommend 3 plates for individual or 5 for sharing between 2 individuals. We ordered 2 French Hot chocolate. They gave us a huge pot of hot chocolate which we struggled to finish even half of as we didn’t realise how filling it would be and we had brunch ordered as well. The pistachio croissant that came along with hot chocolate was massive and extremely satiating, not to mention - delicious and flaky - very authentic! The brunch choices were eclectic and equally delicious. The portions were small so they were perfect for us as we had ordered 5 plates to share. Overall it was a pleasant experience. The service was top notch and extremely friendly and accommodating. Would recommend it!

My daughter loves the donner hoagie...lots in it weighs a ton would do two people. Got the spicy chicken n chips..now I love spicy madras etc but this was on another level. Two mouthfuls and my lips were stinging. Had salad with it and topped it with mayo to try and cool it down. Think you need to bring the spice levels down a bit guys just a tad too much. Anyways enjoyed the meal.

LThis place was the definition of underwhelming. The macaroni tasted like that cheap, tinned crap. Vom. I’m pretty sure I’d eat any kind of pizza. Even bad pizza has it’s time and place (usually on the way home from a night out), but this wouldn’t even fit that scenario. Slightly more edible than the macaroni, but still pretty dire. It’s a no from me.
