You can't miss Vagabond, a five-minute walk up Holloway Road from Highbury & Islington tube. Although the fascia sign is discreet, there's a delivery bike tethered to the front. It's quite an experience for the uninitiated. For a start, the achingly trendy decor looks like a bomb has hit it; pock-marked, scrawled-on walls like something out of a war zone. The table tops are largely cannibalised from wooden cable-winding bobbins, the mix of seating is all about the looks, not the comfort, and the floor is old and intriguing. You don't come here to relax, you come here to be seen and to enjoy superlative coffee.I tried a scrambled egg and bacon breakfast - superb flavoursome bacon, quite unlike the cheap tosh that is served in most greasy spoons. A small heap of salad adds greenery. But only one piece of toast, and those awkward, mean little butter sachets that you get at motorway services. The bread is top-class; really good stuff. But, come on. Perhaps one and a half slices? Maybe a little pot of butter? You order at the bar, then take your seat where you place your little numbered metal order stand. Pay up front, then sit.The counter is, presumably, ironic. It looks as if it was knocked together by a 12-year-old in his first woodwork class. And that's the charm of this place. Good food, a place to be seen, 'different' furniture, insouciant staff...A bizarre diagram of the human tongue and its taste areas is painted on the bullet-holed wall, there's a garden out back, merchandise is on sale. It's a cosmopolitan place too; you hear all accents in this Islington melting pot.A tinny little bell rings to signify that a new order is ready to be taken from the kitchen at the back to the customer - the kind of bell you might hear at a Victorian seance. It's an entertaining experience.

Great little cafe - lovely coffeehouse atmosphere with lots of tables and shared spaces and a garden dining area for lovely summer days. Coffee is done well here, shown by the lines out the door for takeaway coffees. On this particular occasion I sat in for breakfast and coffee with a few friends. We ordered the soft cheese omelette, classic fry up and DIY breakfast (eggs, avo, toast etc) - all very tasty and well presented. The refried beans are well seasoned and exceeded my expectations. Will be back!

This is a small, uncomfortable café, serving bland food and an overpriced, rather bad, coffee (as do, to be honest, the rest of the industrial chic cafés in Holloway Rd, to the point one can barely tell them apart, and often wonders whether they are not actually owned by the same person). If the self-proclaimed Franconian sausage had some flavour, that'd be the defining feature of this café; as it is however, that honour probably falls on the rudeness of its staff, that will do all they can to keep chatting amongst themselves while you wait in front of them like an idiot, hoping to order and pay.

I used Islington Central Library once a week to study and would take lunch at Vagabond, because the have simply the best BLT sandwich I have ever tasted with fresh ingredients: rocket, tomato, lovely bacon and a bn drizzled wth olive oil (amazing). If I was lucky, I would manage to grab the last almond croissant as well - not sure where they were baked, but simply incredible. And the coffee was fantastic as you would expect from a place that roasts its own beans. I only give 4/5 because quality control is a bit sketchy - they burned the BLT bun once, the toilet is not fantastic and the service could be a little better organised.... but I do miss those almond croissants....!!

I again had a first rate coffee here - I have never had anything less whether a flat white or a brew coffee which is my personal favourite but takes time. When I read the recent reviews of some patrons who feel that it is ok to insult this place and suggest that the coffee is poor quality or to recommend that clients go to a coffee chain instead (reviewer from a well known coffee haven in deepest Wales) I feel I need to add some balance. The coffee is some of the best, the staff are eclectic and interesting to talk to, the food is great if a bit limited for choice and the loos are quite ok.

One of the best english breakfast you can have in London! This place is just amazing. Great selection of breakfast/brunch with No 1 their Vagabond breakfast. Beans that are properly prepared by themselves (not the usual canned ones from groceries), spicy sausages, crispy bacon, fresh oven-cooked potatoes and tasty black pudding. The vegeterian alternative is full of freshly choped/cooked veggies. The space is a bit tiny and the seats are becoming sometimes unconfortable, but the environment is so cosy. Flat whites as they should be with coffee beans that distinguish from the ones used from other coffee shops. Totally recommended!

Very poor breakfast and the most awful coffee. Please read on for a full run-down.I organised a breakfast here on Saturday for a couple of friends. The place was not busy when we first arrived, so we ordered a couple of Latte's while we waited for the others to turn up. The coffee was served in a small glass tumbler. But the coffee taste was off whilst being not hot enough...not a great start. But was still looking forward to my Vagabond Breakfast.I ordered the 3 breakfasts, 2 coffee's, a special coffee brew (which was £1 more expensive and took a while to prepare) and couple of slices of cake for afterwards. £42 which I thought was reasonable.First off the special coffee brew was disgusting. It came on some special board and a little jug. It tasted like half a teaspoon of some cheap instant coffee mixed with too much water. The three Vagabond breakfasts came and mine was missing the sausage. While I was waiting for the waitress to come back my friend got stuck in and cut open his sausage. It exploded with oil when he cut in. At least 2 tablespoons off clearish oil seeped onto his plate. Could this morning get any worse? The mine came back with its sausage and it looks good!My sausage was fine but the whole breakfast was ruined but serving it with some fancy Mexican beans. It kept on repeating on all of us some hours later. The bacon was streaky and undercooked. The egg were a bit snotty but I don't mind that. The beans killed everything. And then the final straw!I went to the toilet. Jesus Christ its one of the most disgusting toilets I have been to in a while. I would feel sorry for anyone having to sit on that seat. I lifted it for a piss and underside was black. If look closly it hadn't been property cleaned for a least 6 months. Every time any waitress came out with food or drinks, they hadn't a clue as to what table it should be on so most of the time headed back to the kitchen. The guys on till are not very welcoming and informative. Bit frigging clueless actually. So my advice, NEVER EVER go near this place. Poor everything, sorry guys but you have lost my custom and i hope by writing this you have lost a load more. I could swear a lot about this place, but it is a ----hole.Goodbye and good riddance!Oh and by the way, forgot to mention the CAKES were RANCID as well.

Scrambled eggs were good, bacon too, avocado was unfortunately overpowered with too much lemon or lime - menu didn't mention the side of avocado would be adulterated. We sat in the back room. I was lured in by the detail given to the daily filter coffee and, upon entering, was confronted with a list of the coffees and their origin, farm name, processing method and variety; good stuff. The filter coffee I had was delicious and full of flavour. The prices are reasonable (£2.20 for a filter, £3.50 for an aero, £2 to £3 for an Italian, espresso-style coffee) and the food looks good for the price, although I can't vouch for the taste. Not so sure why (some of) the guys working here are always angry at their lives, but the coffee and the place is really good and a nice addition to the neighborhood and Im always dropping by when I can.The place closes ridiculously early though, and I once tried to order a pour over around 5 mins before they close and they refused, offering something else instead. Fair enough they had to close, but I think in that scenario customer comes first. But enough with the bad stuff. The top end of Holloway road has been gradually gentrifying for years now and Vagabond typifies this - great contrast to some tired old Italian restaurants that are its close neighbors. It sells good quality brunch food and also tea/coffee/cakes. Wooden tables and chairs - bit hipster but only one sad person on a laptop when i was in there and some other people were ACTUALLY TALKING in a cafe! I didn't like the wooden tables as although they weren't dirty the unfinished surface makes them look dirty. Service was not speedy but the place has a great calm atmosphere - my food was good and interesting my tea was tepid. Staff seem a little dreamy and drifty. Got the impression that the owners are genuinely interested in food - based on the menu and the drinks on offer. Cakes were the usual fare - lemon drizzle cake and home made brownie - dullsville! One to return to, as its so handy for the tube and highbury fields.

What drew me into the place was the promise of an excellent expresso, made from good beans and a shiny Marzocco machine (while the latter has nothing exceptional in London). The promise was kept, although by its strength and texture the expresso rather belongs to the Australian than to the Italian family. What made me a regular customer (I go there at least once a week) is the atmosphere of the place. The place is never really packed but never empty and there is a lot to like: the meticulously chosen furniture, the wonderful tiny garden, the excellent music choice, and they distribute the fantastic free Loud and Quiet magazine. The quality of the food is remarkable: the pies, the scrambled eggs and the banana bread are delicious (the only criticism I would express would be that portions tended to be less generous over the last year, especially for the egg meals). While there is quite some turnover, the staff is usually nice, welcoming and competent as regards coffee.

I came in here for lunch with my wife today and it was heaving so I could not have my favourite 'brew' coffee as it takes too long to prepare so had to settle for a flat white which was very good as usual. To make a change we had their home-made soup which was vegetable and served with rye bread and was really excellent. We followed this with a large portion of excellent veggie quiche and a very well executed and dressed salad (special of the day). At £4.50 for the soup and £6 for the quiche we though this very decent value.I notice the last reviewer was not happy with his coffee - although he does not say why although Italian coffee lovers I know tend to go for very very short espressos as opposed to filter so that may be the reason? I am sure these guys would be disappointed if any customer went away unhappy so if I had a bad experience I would tell them and I am sure they would make you something else for me.

I have been coming here on a fairly regular basis for more than a year. These guys are serious about their coffee which is excellent and few cafes can compare. Their flat whites are particularly good. I have eaten here many times. Their sandwiches are high quality and reasonably priced. Their hot food is also very high quality - I especially like the scrambled eggs and have also tried salads which are lovely but not huge so you may need a cake as well - which are also rather good. There is loads of room at the rear and a garden which is nice in the warmer weather. Inside the decor is trendy as opposed to comfortable and the clientele are varied and interesting. Out I went, for a thoroughly intense knees-up with Janto, Chunger and Big Mervyn. After drowning our sorrows with Big Merv’s inheritance from his deid Mam, and ingesting some lighter fluid avec workerman’s glue, we headed to The Joker for a knees up. First in, Chunger got in the pints which were all exceedingly tasty and helped wash down the acrid tang of glue at the back of my throat. It was only after Janto repeatedly and brazenly kept impersonating a couple on a date next to us, by doing the young man’s lovely, soft posh accent that things really got funny. ‘WHAT IS SO FUNNY?’ He boomed. ‘Please let’s just leave, these men are savages and I think they’re on something, they’re out of their heads!’ said his date. We laughed some more and Merv said, too right, we’re out of our heads on good times, and also a heavy dose of my deid Ma’s dosh. ‘You sick freaks’ intoned the gent. ‘You think you’re so funny!’ It was then that Chunger stood up and roared with the strength of a hurricane into his own pint glass - ‘I AM TRYING TO HAVE A LAUGH. MY FATHER WAS NOT VERY NICE TO ME’ We fell about the floor laughing and ordering more pints which flowed as fast as the beautiful currents of the Arno. Things became decidedly ugly when I took a gulp of the young gent’s gravy which was on his plate, but Big Mervyn settled accounts by leaning on the man’s shoulder and whispering a few sweet nothings. Overall, I had a cracking night and the craic was 90 as we Ho Ho Ho’d all the way home with the young couple’s umbrella which they very kindly gave to us, as well as £50, which was very generous.
