This is our go-to destination for their wonderful and consistent coffee courtesy of their excellent barista team. Very friendly and knowledgeable baristas who know their coffee well – flat white is always perfectly texturised and velvety with luxurious microfoam and subtle creamy taste. Despite their skills, the team are really down to earth and welcoming without the attitude that typifies so many London artisan coffee joints. Anika the owner is always charming and hospitable – its obvious she genuinely cares about her customers and the place has a real community vibe. And if that wasn’t enough, they have just appointed a new chef, who has already created some culinary masterpieces. Not often I get excited about porridge but I am now addicted to his porridge with mince pie chutney concoction. And their cheese toastie with nduja is out of this world – literally oozes flavour - words won’t do it justice – you just have to try it for yourself!

Visited here after discovering the place when searching online for somewhere that served brunch in the Islington area. From the outside, we were a bit worried the place was full as the windows were so steamed up but once we went inside, we discovered there was space at the back. I like the way they were encouraging laptop users to sit on certain tables together which meant co-working was an option, but there was still space free for people who wanted brunch / lunch / a coffee. The interiors had a quirky vibe - school style chairs and milk jars. Being from Brighton, it reminded me of home! The staff were lovely and chatty - especially when we said about not being local. I had a really nice smashed avocado on toast, and enjoyed my visit.Would happily return if in the area again.

Coffee tastes ok but poor service - difficulties getting the order correct and long wait (disproportionate to the amount of customers) - same experience on more than one occasion so unlikely to rush back given the selection of decent spots on the same row.

This cafe treats their staff horribly, pays under London living wage, does not pay on time and bullies itś staff members. They take your first weeks pay as a 'deposit 'if you should not last an entire month. Then they try to bully you out of the job. Most of the staff has never seen a contract. I have it on good authority that they have withheld payment from staff as well. There is a tipjar that the locals use frequently but noone knows where these tips go. There are plenty of places with good coffee in Camden passage so do not give your money to this place.

Guy at the counter took my order (which I recited clearly), then proceeded to receive the wrong order (I ordered the scrambled eggs, was given poached - was given the option for the kitchen to make the right one but felt extremely patronised - not my fault buddy learn how to do your job!), then was missing extra sides from my meal. They're bloody good at taking your money but poor at actually doing what they are supposed to do - it's a cafe people get yourselves together.

It’s not hard to find disappointment in a cup. It’s even easier to find it in North London and easier still to find it a stone’s throw from the Northern Line. Appestat, however, strives to undercut the market for over-iced, under-flavoured, and over-priced cold coffee that emerges in the heat waves of London’s summer months.

I've found the coffee to be unreal, and the food to be relatively decent if not slightly overpriced - but this is London after all. The two guys making the coffee, and the lady running around making sure everyone was seen to aren't the problem. The oriental lady barking orders at the staff made for an unpleasant atmosphere, and the constant sour look on her face made us feel unwelcome. With the added unpleasantry of being told I couldn't have a receipt on my second order of coffee because she 'didn't know how to print it off' (although I got one on our first order of coffee) from the same person. I must include as well that if you want somewhere to go to complete some work or browse the internet or anything including a laptop, ensure you avoid this place on the weekends as they have a sign glaring in your face making you feel about as welcome as a turd on the bottom of your shoe. We'd missed this sign and instead of one of the staff just telling us, we were made to feel looked down upon and extremely unwelcome with the agitated removal of our cups before we were finished, and the constant brushing past us to make us feel like we were just in the way when there was firstly, plenty of space; secondly, other ways to go around; and thirdly, no reason to go past us as she just turned around and came straight back. Numerous times. However, the coffee is fantastic and the food is decent. This place is a 10/10 if you enjoy being spoken down to and don't plan on doing anything on a laptop during your weekend visit. Otherwise, it's a solid 4/10 from me and that is purely on the basis that the coffee is one of the best I've had in London.

My husband and I stopped by here for brunch late this afternoon. Pros: cosy place, cheerful manager, menu not too expensive. I ordered the mushrooms roasted in garlic butter on toast with kale. My husband got the pancakes with berries and creme fraiche. I also got a chai tea latte and two energy balls. My dish arrived even later than my other half's, so the manager graciously offered me a slice of cake in recompense. I got two other energy balls- coconut and almond- instead. Both are great; dense and chocolatey with lots of date flavour. My chai was super weak. Sad face. As for my meal, I liked it quite a bit but... the bread was overtoasted so it was hard to cut. Even my husband had trouble cutting the bread! The mushroom flavour with the eggs was very good but not amazing. I think adding avo to the dish would improve the taste tremendously. My husband said his pancake dish was satisfactory but I found the berries overtly sweet; like a giant sugar bomb.

I've been to Appestat a couple of times before, once for coffee only & again for a quick brunch of toast. Popped in for a bite to eat for lunch after visiting the Business Design Centre & ordered the poached egg on homemade beans, along with my usual Americano with hot milk. I do love the atmosphere in here; although the seating is fairly limited & some might think it a little cramped, I quite like the cosy feel & the shared table seating, particularly as I was here by myself. They were fairly busy, so service wasn't the speediest, coffee arriving quite a while ahead of my food, but that wasn't too much of a problem. When lunch did arrive however, I almost wish it hadn't. It looked good, and I tucked in expecting it to taste as good, but was disappointed. It lacked any real flavour, was lukewarm, giving me the impression it may have been standing in the kitchen a while. I love places that go to the trouble of making their own baked beans; I make my own, so know how much nicer they { can } taste, but on this occasion I almost wish they'd have served up Heinz's finest.Such a shame as I do like this place . . .

I was in London on holidays and my London friends suggested that we should meet up for breakfast at Appestat in Angel. It was a Sunday morning and we were the first customers to arrive at 10 am. The cafe is small and we head to the back of the cafe and grab the large wooden table in the centre of the room for our group of four. Our mistake was to not placing our order soon after arrival, we hadn't noticed that the cafe was full by the time we decided on ordering. Because we were two couples we ordered and paid for our meals at the counter separately one after the other. The coffees all arrived at the same time but one couple was eating their breakfast while we had to wait over thirty minutes for ours to arrive. The meals were delicious, full of flavour and generous sized portions, very filling. No complaints with the coffee, it was good quality and made well. WIFI is available, just ask at the counter for the WIFI details. Appestat was a good recommendation and very well priced.

On my last visit for food I had to send my breakfast of soggy bread, badly poached eggs, poorly presented yoghurt decor and flavourless school dinner mushrooms back. I ordered a full English. The eggs were perfectly cooked but lacked seasoning. And there was no salt provided to adjust. The baked beans were supple and well prepared. The mushrooms were cooked very well but also lacked for seasoning. The toast was the big let down. Made with sourdough it was a tough piece of bread. No condiments provided, it made for a dry part of breakfast.

I did not find it hard to get a seat, however I can see why it might be difficoult to find one since the place is small. Amazing coffee. The Green Lean was so nice! I recommend getting one of these breakfasts! Friendly staff, the women remembered that I pop in for coffee a few times and offered me a loyalty card as they just got the new stamp for it - check out the design, I haven't seen another loyalty card I like as much. Great atmosphere, clean design, nice pictures on the wall behind the counter that look like they were made by the staff! I sat in the window for this visit and felt happy to be part of the busy vibe of Islington - it is not a very cosy place so I wouldn't recommend going if you feel the need for privacy and comfort - it is best for days when you're on the go, and want to feel part of the hustle and bustle of London. Also best for days when you need a tasty and nourishing breakfast!

Our early afternoon brunch was less than what I had anticipated. We were held up in a queue at the till by a waitress who struggled a number of times to get an order correct that she was writing down from the people in front of us (without intending to be rude I'll add there was no language barrier). She apologised for the wait but then begrudgingly took our order. Despite the waitress asking where we were sitting, the waiter did a tour of the room every time he brought in any food or coffee asking "who had the...". As such our coffees and food were given to people who ordered after us and so we waited twice as long as we would have liked (though you would have thought they would have cooked enough if the other people had ordered the same...?!) Content with the food and coffee (eventually) but disappointed by the lacklustre service.

The staff were really friendly and when we ordered, our drinks arrived very fast. However, my friends' breakfasts came out before mine and by the time mine arrived, they had finished. However, I hardly cared as the atmosphere in Appestat was so nice that we just sat and chatted for ages! A member of staff apologised profusely and informed me that there was only one chef in the kitchen. When my brunch arrived, it was so delicious - the organic baked beans were full of flavour and the eggs were poached to perfection. Two girls next to me ordered shakshuka (baked eggs) which I will definitely be ordering next time we visit for brunch. Approaching the till yesterday I was 'greeted' with a grudging hello by a surly girl at the till. Every basic question I asked was answered with an aggressive grunt. When I asked if they had a flavoured syrup to put in my coffee the response was 'we DON'T SELL flavoured coffees here'. Okay then. I handed her two paninis and realised she had put them straight into the paper bag. I asked her 'oh, you aren't going to heat them up?' to which she replied 'you didn't ask me to heat them up!' I'm sorry, I didn't realise that a mozzarella, pesto and tomato panini could be eaten cold, and that I had to ASK for it to be heated up. She then turned to the girls making coffee, "I have to go heat these paninis up' like it was a massive inconvenience for her. The staff seemed to be more concerned with chatting to each other and trying to look cool than actually serving any customers. Eventually my paninis did come (hardly heated, shocker) which were what could be aptly described as dumped into my paper bag and she sauntered off to be rude to the next paying customer. I have been told that she is the owners' sister, seriously, staff need training pronto and management presence. Also the paninis I chose were the last two in the fridge, at 1pm on a Saturday they should definitely have more selection. Oh and the coffees were both luke warm, had to go home, re-heat my panini and put my coffee in the microwave. Needless to say I won't ever be returning.

I have been here quite often, they make a really good latte and mint mocha. They are always lovely and chatty and I feel welcome. There's a beautiful view of the garden.

i only had a coffee here recently but it was a real find tucked away from the busy roads of Islington , but the food and sandwiches looked delicious.

I love these kind of cafés where organic food is a must and the atmosphere is simple and kind. My family and I decided to have breakfast at Appestat in Islington, London, and the first impression we got was unfriendly waiters who weren't interested in us, as customers, at all. The food we had was great and super tasteful but the prices, quite expensive compared to similar places. We didn't repeat that shop because of all of these circumstances. I won't probably repeat when I go back to Islington.

Best cafe, and coffee, in Islington. Delicious Chai lattes, and yummy cakes too (the red velvet and carrot cakes are amazing). Plus they sell some really nice deli bits and pieces that I'm always tempted by. Staff are always friendly, and the owners are really lovely too. Art work on the walls is cool and changes regularly. Nice to see such a lovely independent coffee shop in a city full of boring chains. 10 out of 10!

And like David, it's winning the battle. This is a small independent and I've found the staff to be friendly and the coffee is very good. If you have a sweet tooth, I recommend the jam donuts - they're only available at weekends, because of the risk of obesity if an everyday treat - and have the best raspberry filling ever (fact).

Why eat factory food when you can eat fresh? Why drink coffee when you can drink COFFEE? Why face a forced smile when you can be irradiated by the warmth of a genuine welcome?

If you're in London there is no excuse to be drinking chain coffee. There are so many wonderful independent places to go for a great cup, and Appestat in Angel is certainly one of them! Located in Camden Passage, a little enclave just off Upper Street, I popped in for a quick breakfast as I was dashing to the train. Wish I could have sat in as the atmosphere was very casually chic. The latte was incredible and the service friendly! Don't forget to order a croissant. This caffeine addict will be back.

Good coffee.... But that's about the only thing going for this place! And there's plenty of fab coffee places in islington! Unfortunately our experience here was quiet a negative one. We found the Staff rude and arrogant which is off putting when you're just looking for somewhere relaxing for a coffee! Decor and style didn't lend itself to a relaxing experience either. Beautiful cafés and warm, inviting staff in many of the cafés further on down!

Appestat is the best new coffee shop in Angel/Islington. In addition to the amazing coffee from Climpson and Sons, they offer a wide range of cheese, meat, and speciality food products from the best suppliers in Europe. Can't wait to go back!

Great staff, especially the guys running the place; great coffee; great food - it might be a little bit pricey but when you consider that everything is sourced from the best producers, home made on the spot - that they are in N1 where rents must be astronomical, then it's actually a "bargain". Having said that, coffee prices are very affordable. I've been there a few times for a treat. I get a hot meal (soups are delicious) or a sandwich (delicious - home-made bread vs "supermarkets", it simply doesn't compare, home made taste is superior); juices freshly squeezed (important to me - made on the spot, not prepared earlier); coffee (top of the range at competitive price); I have not tried the cakes... Water (tap) is free and plenty - you don't have to ask for that, it's just there - which is a nice touch, they're obviously not greedy, they let you have that if you want - there is also bottled. Highly recommended.

I visited Appestat in December 2014. It is in a great spot, right in the heart of Islington, Three minutes from the tube. A very warm welcome from the owner's themselves who make a mean cup of coffee with beautiful quality teas and hot chocolates too. Plenty of space to sit. Lovely pantry items, honey, chocolates, bread, antipasto, coffee beans and a good cheese and charcuterie counter. There was a range of eat in or takeaway sandwiches, hot soups and wonderful cakes. The key notes here are the authentic vibe and the high quality of both food and service. A class act in N1.

Out I went, for a thoroughly intense knees-up with Janto, Chunger and Big Mervyn. After drowning our sorrows with Big Merv’s inheritance from his deid Mam, and ingesting some lighter fluid avec workerman’s glue, we headed to The Joker for a knees up. First in, Chunger got in the pints which were all exceedingly tasty and helped wash down the acrid tang of glue at the back of my throat. It was only after Janto repeatedly and brazenly kept impersonating a couple on a date next to us, by doing the young man’s lovely, soft posh accent that things really got funny. ‘WHAT IS SO FUNNY?’ He boomed. ‘Please let’s just leave, these men are savages and I think they’re on something, they’re out of their heads!’ said his date. We laughed some more and Merv said, too right, we’re out of our heads on good times, and also a heavy dose of my deid Ma’s dosh. ‘You sick freaks’ intoned the gent. ‘You think you’re so funny!’ It was then that Chunger stood up and roared with the strength of a hurricane into his own pint glass - ‘I AM TRYING TO HAVE A LAUGH. MY FATHER WAS NOT VERY NICE TO ME’ We fell about the floor laughing and ordering more pints which flowed as fast as the beautiful currents of the Arno. Things became decidedly ugly when I took a gulp of the young gent’s gravy which was on his plate, but Big Mervyn settled accounts by leaning on the man’s shoulder and whispering a few sweet nothings. Overall, I had a cracking night and the craic was 90 as we Ho Ho Ho’d all the way home with the young couple’s umbrella which they very kindly gave to us, as well as £50, which was very generous.
