Urban Angel in Edinburgh, City of

Lovely cafe serving food made with high-quality ingredients. I had the bacon and Maple syrup French toast and added scrambled eggs. The bacon was so crispy and tasty, I loved it! The French toast was so light, fluffy, and full of flavour. It went so well with the bacon and maple syrup.

Urban Angel’s website explains that it was founded by Gilly Macpherson, inspired by the vibrant café cultures of Australia and New Zealand. That might be why, as a group of Aussies, we felt very comfortable and at home here. I got the BLT, it had chili jam, garlic aioli, red onion, and gherkins. The gherkins were large, thick cut, good gherkins but, after the bacon they were a big, overpowering flavour. I love gherkins but some people might not expect them to be that dominant in the dish. In the US, you will often get a side of pickles, that might be a better way to serve these so you get a more traditional BLT. Others got the baked eggs in tomato sauce with goat’s cheese, chili-infused honey, and fresh basil, served with sourdough toast, they looked good and were enjoyed. We also got the Eggs Benedict, featuring chorizo, spinach, and chipotle hollandaise. I was thinking the chorizo would be thin slices as a way serve it a bit more like how a traditional benedict comes, but the flavours worked and if it sounds good to you, you’d likely enjoy it. I enjoyed the bits I had. The za’atar spiced scrambled eggs on toast, it came with spicy hollandaise, fresh coriander, spicy salsa, and an added side of halloumi. I guess this dish is another nod to the idea of what some Australian cafes try to do: fresh, bold flavours, trying to put a spin on dishes and having a go. Australian cafes also usually have great coffee at a higher standard than lots of UK cafes, we don’t lean into the franchises as much and lots of our baristas take their craft very seriously. The coffee here was great, so we got a takeaway for the morning sight-seeing. Being Edinburgh, the cafe also had Scottish Breakfast Tea instead of English. Similar enough, but I appreciated this patriotism, and liked the flavours of the style. Urban Angel has a nice vibe in the space, it is nestled in a building that feels like it has some quirky history. The café retains elements of its past, and creates a warm and rustic atmosphere. The staff were friendly, good-humoured, attentive, and the way they go about their work definitely enhance the overall dining experience. Urban Angel’s website and menu promote an ethos of good food, done right. Sustainable and responsibly sourced, etc. It’s in a pretty part of town and has some parks and shopping areas nearby. I’d recommend visiting Urban Angel and grabbing some breakfast or brunch and a coffee. Order flavours you like and you won’t go far wrong.

I literally just finished my breakfast here and am feeling very satisfied! The breakfast smoothie was absolutely delicious. My partner and I went for the French Toast with Bacon, Scrambled Eggs, and Maple Syrup. Came with so much bacon, and I have it say, it was delicious. Very nice cafe and I would eat here again!

Delicious breakfast and friendly service. Price quality was tip top in order. Unfortunately we were sitting under the radio and the music was too loud which made it a bit less cozy.

Urban Angel is a delightfully boho cafe in a super central spot. I do think it’s trying to simultaneously be a relaxed cafe spot AND a place for a bougée brunch. Unfortunately this means superrrrr expensive pricing for what you get. food and matcha were yummy though - so if you’re looking to spend £££ and enjoy a nice atmosphere then here is the place!

Found Urban Angel cafe online and decided to try it out based on the positive reviews. Inviting atmosphere and staff found us a table pretty quick even though they have reserved signs on. Ordered an iced latte with oat milk and a mocha as they don't do any syrups sadly. The iced latte was good but mocha slightly disappointing as tasted a bit like grit due to use of cocoa (?) and it not mixing well at all. Had the French toast with apple and while sweet, wasn't over bearing and overall tasted yummy. Also ordered eggs benedict with chorizo but was served the bacon version for some reason. Mentioned to the staff they brought out chorizo but not spinach. After querying again with them I said we ordered the chorizo eggs benedict to which she replied yeah you've received the completely wrong dish. She did offer to take the dish away and supply the proper meal which we were grateful for but seemed silly at that point as half off the egg / muffin had been eaten while waiting. Another disappointing factor was the eggs were over cooked and more like full boiled eggs. After good reviews online our experience was a bit of a mixed bag sadly.

Urban Angel is a great cafe find in Edinburgh - am always on the lookout for a I good coffee and they do a very decent one there but it's the food that is standout - no one seems to make salads taste so good (and for this unashamed meat eater to order vegetarian is saying something). Try the trio of salads with the hummus dip, you won't regret.

Gorgeous independent cafe, it offers a wide selection of sweet and savoury. My mum and I went for some lunch and can't wait to go back and try more of the menu.

Amazing brunch with friends! The service was fantastic and we all said how lovely each member of the team was, it just made the experience something we talked about fondly afterwards! What a find! After some online searching for the perfect breakfast spot in Edinburgh, I came across Urban Angel and we booked the last available pre booking slot for 11am. We arrived to see the place bustling and a queue outside - as we had our online booking we were quickly shown to our table. Inside the place is fantastic. A tastefully converted old house with original stoves along one side and old photos around the room. It was busy and full of people enjoying brunch or catching up with friends. Our drinks and brunch were exceptional. The attentive staff couldn’t have been more helpful - observant, quick and plenty of their team bustling around to provide fast service in this very popular spot. We are so pleased we found this place and will be sure to return on any future visits to Edinburgh. Thank you all for a great experience and wonderful food.

A super cute and cozy breakfast diner with greetings from super friendly staff! We got lucky and got the last seat, and then watched them turn away people constantly after as it was full. This was just before 9am on a Friday. So plan agreed. I had the eggs benedict and a croissant, both wonderful! My husband had the French toast with granola and he loved it. There coffee is also really good here, both the cappuccino and mocha! We will love to come back, and recommend to anyone to give this place a try!

Everyone who works here is crazy nice, cool, chill and attentive. They get every detail correct, are accommodating of your needs and give spot on recs. Honestly, I don't like to repeat restaurants when I travel, but this place was 💯 with it - we were back 2 daysi n a row...and had planned it for a 3rd lunch (but got sidetracked). That good. Different items ordered both times and everything was delicious. Big love to all the Urban Angels 😇 here!

If you want a plain breakfast, go to any boring chain restaurant... Now, if you want your food to kick start your day the right way, get yourself to Urban Angel. The food was insanely good, the staff were lovely and the service was fast, cheerful and nothing was a bother. I can't recommend this place enough. I would not miss the opportunity to taste the cuisine at Urban Angel Café. It is absolutely delicious. The service is wonderful. Highly recommend the Eggs Benedict with chorizo - it has got to be the best I've ever eaten.

Ten years ago this was the place to eat, recently gone down hill, hasn’t kept up with the competition, asked for a spoon twenty minutes later had to go get one myself, got an açai bowl, which just tasted of frozen banana puree no other flavour, had a powdery residue, despite telling staff and me having left 95 percent off it no alternative was offered, I know menu said £4 for toast I was charged £7, I did not leave tip as food was mediocre and service was below average, staff were annoyed tried to ask me to pay it, even though it’s discretionary

£7 for two slices of sourdough toast, butter and jam. Far too expensive. And then to have the cheek to add a service charge!

Аn absolute must visit breakfast /all dining place. The staff and service is 5 stars and the food is amazing. We tried a couple of the breakfast options and the Bannoffe French toast is a must, divine !!! ❤️

A hyped up place on lots of GF/DF Edinburgh blogs. The staff were friendly and accommodating, Coffe was good, but sadly not a great review from me. Party of 4, prebooked. We arrived hoping for some yummy or interesting breakfasts as the menu seemed to promise. Their gluten free options were limited and the bread served was horrendous quality, not even toasted or buttered?! We paid between £11 and £17 a head. The food was mediocre at best. Would've liked to try the french toast as that looked and smelt amazing!...but it is only available with dairy. Poached eggs tasted of vinegar. I would not recommend the items we chose: za'atar spiced scrambled eggs on toast with spicy hollandaise, fresh coriander & jalapeno salsa - very meh and surprisingly flavourless. poached eggs on toast, + mushrooms + gf bread - tiny mushrooms grilled into oblivion, possibly the worst gf bread ever, untoasted and unbuttered. hummus on sourdough toast with cherry tomatoes, pickled shallots, za'atar, salda verde, capers & crispy chickpeas - the most interesting of all that we ordered, but really needed more salt! Anyone else of hummus being the go-to for vegans?

We stumbled across urban Angel cafe and we were so glad we did. Beautiful decor and the service was excellent, Erika served us some really tasty mock tails and cocktails. I had the banana pudding pancakes my husband had the Nashville hot fried pork chop sammy they were both delicious. I would highly recommend.

This cafe is very cosy and the service was friendly and quick. I had the plum French toast which was lovely. I feel the price of some menu items is quite high, such as the hummus toast for £15, as it was one (very small) piece of bread with some toms and chickpeas really. I don't see how those ingredients amount to that price. Not many vegan choices

Really good coffee. The banana pancakes could do with fresh rather than dried banana. Avoid sitting near the door, very few people are capable of closing it.

A favourite place from a previous visit to Edinburgh. Went twice on this trip and was no less impressed this time around. The food and drinks were delicious and the staff were friendly and accommodating. Looking forward to next time! Update 2025, as above. Just as good as ever

Eggs perfectly poached, flavoursome eggs Benedict. Halloumi burger tasted great & home made fries was perfect. Carrot cake was flavoursome but a little on the dry side. Friendly service :)

I’d heard a lot about Urban Angel cafe and know it’s a popular brunch spot, but I found it to be overhyped. The food was just okay. I had the eggs Benedict with black pudding and spicy Hollandaise, but the poached eggs were overcooked, and the dish felt lukewarm. At £13.90, there are much better brunch options in terms of quality and value. The staff were friendly, but we were rushed out at the end, which felt a bit rude. I wouldn’t hurry back.

Came here for breakfast once while on a 2 week holiday/vacation November of 2023. Out of all the places we ate and drank in the UK this place had the best lattes. I very much enjoyed the french toast and my wife liked her benny with blood pudding (It was our 1st time and better than expected). This establishment is one of the few we remember fondly that ends up in conversation, more than a year after visiting.

The food portion is large, the toast is delicious, the bacon in the eggs Benedict is a bit hard; the milkshake is delicious, you can try it

I had the Greek yoghurt with granola. It had the potential to be really good but unfortunately it was kind of a dry experience. The granola failed. I wasn’t sweet or crunchy at all… felt dusty in my mouth. I wonder how they call it granola? The curd was amazing though. Coffee was great and staff extremely nice.

I absolutely loved this place! The za’atar eggs were delicious.Their matcha was better than I expected, and the ginger shot did not disappoint. I would definitely come back!

Fantastic food, drinks & service in this quirky cafe. The best Birthday breakfast. We had Baked eggs with goats cheese, Banoffee French toast with great coffee, ginger shot & a healthy flavoursome smoothie. A must visit we will be back

The haggis and black pudding with chilli jam was out of this world.

A little gem really. Food was very good and different from the standard food you see everywhere. Coffee was decent but a tad bitter. No syrups which is always disappointing. Forgot one of our drinks but apologised. Staff were all very polite.

The most incredible breakfast!! And my sister specifically said “the best coffee she’s ever had” The staff were full of beautiful energy and did their best to get us a table. Lovely experience would 100% recommend :)

Amazing food! My boyfriend got the chicken burger and the chips and aioli and they were unreal! I got the walnut and pear porridge and it was class. Definitely worth the prices.

Perfect! One of the waitresses is Spanish so it was very convenient! Everything so delicious!

Service was so lovely and we absolutely devoured our breakfasts. If you happen to enjoy artichokes and coriander, I cannot recommend enough the artichoke lemon toast with chimichurri butter beans, it was absolutely scrumptious!

Magnificent service, super friendly and the dishes are super delicious. We ordered a za’ atar spiced scramble toast and it was pretty good. We also ordered some baked eggs with goat cheese and they were sensational. I ordered a banana pancake with a chocolate edge. It was delicious. They have breakfast all day and the bathroom is pretty good.

Love, love love! A gem of a place. We tried for an hour to find a nice brunch place to sit and relax it without a reservation. They had a lot of customers but were super accommodating and friendly, did not rush us at all and the food was delicious and fresh. We had just come back from another restaurant that had super rude staff so this was so refreshing to experience.

I wanted to go to this place a long time ago, and just got the chance a couple of days ago. It is a wonderfully cozy and rustic spot. The atmosphere is charming, and the setting provides a perfect place to relax. The food and service are both excellent, making it a delightful experience overall.

Worth a visit just for the almond croissants. So good, I was in town from London two weeks in a row and made a point of visiting 😋 Also one of the best coffee shops in town. The 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 rolls are also v v good 😍

Urban Angel is one of my favourite spots to go for a breakfast/lunch. The staff are almost always positive and friendly, despite how super busy they get. The food is absolutely fantastic with so many good options and the coffee is good also. I honestly haven't found another breakfast place that's better. I never come away smelling like fried food, which happens in most other cafés. This place really is a credit to Edinburgh 💜

Great little place for brunch. Got here at 8:30 and was told kitchen would not be open until 9. No problem I enjoyed a lovely coffee and I am glad I waited! The food was amazing and kept me full for the whole day. I enjoyed the banana French toast and a roll however I had it over spinach instead of the bread. It was very delicious and boy they were busy! By the time I got my food they already had an hour wait. The locals must know this is a good place to go. Very fresh ingredients with great choices to satisfy anyone's desire.
