DISGUSTING!!! Ordered 1/4 duck but had hardly any meat mostly skin. For one of the most expensive meals on the menu we were extremely disappointed. Spoke to the owner who clearly didn’t care and told us that’s how he received it. Appalling attitude towards what was a regular customer. I will never use this Chinese again.

I have used this takeaway before, but not for about a year or more. It was always, in my memory, ok. This time the food was just dreadful. I am used to duck having a bit of a crispy skin, not this time, that was like a piece of rubber. Under the skin was a thick layer of fat then a little tasteless meat, and far more fat than meat. Cooked with mushrooms (fine) but the gravy or sauce was not good. Tasteless chicken in a batter that was soft and cold. As it was early in the evening I wonder if the fryer had actually reached a temperature to cook it? The rice was acceptable but I was tempted to order rice with onions. However, both were cooked at the same time. Rice cooks quite quickly so the onion was taken out almost raw. Most of the takeaway went in the bin. Will not be back again in a hurry. £20 wasted.

We ordered : Chicken Schezuan which was in a sauce the consistency of water and lacked flavour. Garlic Mushrooms which again was in a watery sauce with no garlic flavour!!! Onion Rice was just about okay, can't see the point in having onions in it except for the visual content. Salt and Pepper Pork was the best dish. Unfortunately I won't be ordering from here again just because they got 1 out of 4 dishes right........I should have enjoyed the whole order.......waste of money, can cook better myself!!

Used for years, love the food, I can’t understand the bad reviews on here. I can recommend the duck dishes and set menus are really tasty

Having been a customer for many years, one time a driver lied about calling us for directions to our address, the owner now asks for payment before delivery which I really don’t mind at all, except that their drivers still , for some reason find my house, everyone else can! Despite me telling them to call for directions. Tonight I ordered, cash on delivery, 1.30 minutes, after said 1.30 minutes they call and say they can’t deliver until I’ve paid, then tell me they can’t guarantee delivery!!!! Perhaps another 1.30 minutes Manager won’t speak to me, I’ll encourage my friends and family to go elsewhere unless the manager recognises that delivery driver made an honest mistake and I’m being made out to be a difficult customer , absolutely disgusted with this, and running a restaurant ourselves would never treat a customer like this.

We use Upton chinese often and tonight's was by far the best chinese takeaway we've ever had!! No1 chinese takeaway in the Bay hands down.

Lady on the phone lied about wait times. Told me it would be up to 1 hour, rang after 1.5 hours to be told it wasn't near being started and would be at least another hour. Dreadful service, I understand its busy but she didn't care and was rude on the phone. Wont be ordering or recommending you again.

Nice food but dreadful service. I have used Upton many times and nearly every time they say a delivery and then take double that to arrive. Tonight was an hour and a half. Don’t trust what you are told just use another place.

We ave used this Takeaway whenever we run out of time to cook. Always good, fresh food. Te owner as also added some dishes from is village in china to te menu.

Too much noodles less chicken which was cold 2 small mushrooms waste of money and dinner 2 bites and it went in the bin I will know in future not to have this again

Had salt and pepper Ribs and Chips and Curry sauce. Very good quality. I shall return. The Ribs were very tasty and not dry. The Chips chunky and freshly cooked. And the Curry sauce although different from the norm was very nice. All in all a good experience

I have travelled the Country, Living in most of the Big cities but never discovered a Chinese takeaway AS GOOD as Upton Chinese.... I use it on a weekly basis & wish I could cook like this.. The Flavours & Quality is THE BEST..... Without question THE BEST!! Looking forward to tonight's delivery

Suppose to be special chow mein with a mixture of all meats and prawns with beansprouts too.... Not a chance worst one I've ever had... 2 prawns.. plastic chicken.. 1 small piece of beef I guess.. 2 mushrooms about 5 beansprouts... Terrible wouldn't recommend again... Been here before won't be going again...

Ordered from here last night, we usually order from the willows but it's closed on a weds, delivery time was fairly quick considering some of the reviews... Ordered sweet & sour king prawn, prawn toast, special chop suey & prawn toast... again food wasn't too bad, a little soggy & bland but do find this with some chinese food, wish I hadn't bothered... I was woken in the night with awful stomach cramps & had 2 run 2 the toilet 2 be sick! I was then hugging the toilet for the next few hours throwing up... I will never ever order from here again!

Rang at 6.25pm to order a delivery and was told within the hour. An hour and 10 mins later I called again. It was being delivered to the wrong address AGAIN (same happened the week before!). He rang delivery driver and rang me back to say he was on his way. When I chased it again and asked for some money off as it was 45 minutes later than they said and would've been cold they said no! They are more expensive than our usual takeaway and food isn't anything special so will go back to our usual one. Very disappointed.

Have tried this Chinese a few years ago and remember it was good so decided to have it again tonight. I asked for just bean sprouts in the chicken chow main vegetable wise and it came with more bean sprouts than noodles and waaaaay too much sauce so pretty gross. I also ordered chicken balls with bbq sauce and arrived with sweet and sour and phoned back to be told she had repeated the order.. yes and repeated the fact I said bbq so not sure why i ended up with the wrong sauce. All in all won’t be using this Chinese again.

This take away has been run by the same family for many years. They have built up a strong customer base in a densely populated working class area by producing good quality meals with a varied menu. All items are reasonably priced - by Chinese take away standards. I would happily recommend this outlet.

We have used this Chinese before for delivery and it has been ok but this time was an absolute disaster! The food took 1 hour 20 minutes to arrive, we were told it would arrive within the hour.

Ordered a Chinese for myself and my partner for the last night in our home before we moved, delivery man called because he couldn’t find my property and as I was trying to explain to him where to go I got a really rude response saying ‘I’m sorry luv but I don’t have time to mess about I have loads of Chinese’s to deliver so you will have to come out and meet me’... absolutely disgusting chavvy driver with an appalling attitude which is a shame because I really rate this Chinese and their food is amazing but unfortunately their choice of so called delivery driver that makes you go out in the cold in your pyjamas because they basically can’t be bothered to get out their car really lets them down. He did end up walking up my drive, gave me one bag then said ‘do you want the rest?’.... just rude and not a very nice man. I hope the restaurant makes him aware of this because if he carries on like that all the time the reputation of this Chinese will go downhill very quickly!

Best chinease in Torquay been getting it here for over 20 years always cooked well and hot and they deliver

I Have had food from here many times but have always collected with no issues , this time I decided to have it delivered, huge mistake after 30 minutes on the phone to the delivery driver it had still not arrived with him telling me he was at the other side of town, the delivery driver was unable to find me at a basic address in the willows ! After driving to collect from the takeaway I was met with hostility when I requested a fresh Chinese being told it was still hot ! After 45 minutes obviously it wasn't being 45 minutes after the original was first cooked , they agreed to re cook my food and I waited for it , on arrival home I served it up to find it was all cold except the barbecue sauce, it was clear they had given me my old food and pretended to recook it , I had to reheat it in the oven , the food was bland with no flavour at all a huge disappointment when you've spent so much money on it , I will never go here again awful customer service awful food .

Never get Chinese from anywhere else in Torquay. This is by far the tastiest. Food always cooked fresh to order & tastes bloody good! Prices are good too. Staff are friendly.

Ordered from here Tuesday night, absolutely terrible, the beef in black bean was the same colour as curry sauce yet tasted like dishwater with a hint of washing up liquid, and the beef was slimey,no black bean and no chilli. I paid nearly £12 to end up with a bad stomach for 2 days! Please don't waste your money or risk your health

11/10 would Chinese again. Not as greasy and Yuen Mei. Ordered the crispy beef -- pretty damn crispy.

Have ordered from here quite often as I'm only round the corner, it's my Friday night treat night, and I'm never ever disappointed with their food or service! Best I've been too!! :)

Lovely takeway food is excellant, we normally get a delivery which is normally an hour wait which we dont mind cause the food is great.

service is always good the food is always tasty ....cooked fresh ...and they deliver .......take phone orders if u don't want to wait ....

Food was spot on as usual but the 1hr 30min wait was rubbish the lady said 45mins to an hour wait was OK but when its later than you have been told is not good. Why take phone numbers a short call saying food is running late would be appropriated next time

We had a very enjoyable meal from this takeaway which we have used on and off for years. We eat about 6 o'clock and by 3am two of the family where not at all well and we may be unfair in assuming this was a fault of the takeaway,but from reviewing all that was eaten over a period of time it certainly looks likely that hygiene standards may have slipped and made two of the family Ill. Prior to this takeaway we have all eaten the same food and the takeaway was the only food where two of the family had different meals to the other two and both were quiet Ill at near the same time of approx 9 hours after eating the food. We will stress this is only our opinion and maybe being unfair with assumptions but for us it all points to our conclusion and notice another review in relation to hygiene. For us we won't be returning as we generally have good health and can't remember the last time we had two of the family having the same symptoms at almost the same time .

Excellent Chinese, great menu. Service is good, though on a weekend it's best to collect your own order and there can be as long as an hour to wait on deliveries. Recommend the curry

This is the 5th time we've had problems with this take away. We ordered our meal from them again tonight and got told it'd take between 40/45mins. My partner was a bit hesitant to order due to problems we've had previously but we decided to try them again, well much to our surprise, our meal came an hour and 25mins after we ordered, i had to call x3 to ask where it was and when it'd turn up and they kept telling me they were on the phone to the driver and thats she was 2mins away, when our food finally got here it was almost cold and very small portions. The delivery driver was very blunt, it may not have been her fault the delivery took so long but we had a very blunt and rude apology. The chicken in the chow mein was very dry and also very, very greasy. Such a shame because this used to be such a nice takeaway but I think its safe to say we will not be ordering again!!

Whenever we fancy a takeaway, this place is hard to beat.Great food, tasty and with the right amount of spice and seasoning.Staff very polite and reasonable prices.Well done guys!

We have been using this takeaway for several years and have never had a bad one! Lovely, tasty, reasonably priced food. Definitely recommend this place. Have tried other takeaways in the Bay and they never compare to Upton.

Been quite a while since I last used the Upton.The previous owners must have passed on the business to the next generation.Unfortunately they have no idea of customer P,R. and it shows by the number of people in the shop.I pass the Upton every day and noticed how few people are in in compaired to a year ago.The food was good tasty large portions but on the expensive side for a take a way.John & SueTorquay

I've just enjoyed a really nice couple of dishes - salted pork dish with Chilli and a Ginger and Onion chicken dish. Both really fresh with no sticky sugary sauces or congealed gloop you get in some places. In contrast to previous reviews the staff were all helpful and the place looked really clean. Kitchen staff in sharp uniforms with paper hats so maybe things have improved! Call it like you see it - my experience was very good.

Rude staff, food was over cooked, cold when arrived. Wasnt allowed to exchange mushrooms in dish for something else as its already cooked. Will not use again!

The food is rubbish, everything tastes the same and is over spiced.The waiting time always seems to be over an hour and the food hygiene rating has sealed the deal for me never to eat there again! It scored a 1...how is that even possible!

Useless chap took order, but wasn't paying attention, very inflexible with dishes and couldn't even add a few cashew nuts to one dish saying they were pre prepared. He finally said order would be delivered in 20 mins. 40 mins later I spoke to another lady who said the previous chap didn't know what he was talking about as he was only training. She told me my order was on its way and gave me delivery mans number who said my order wasn't cooked so I cancelled order

0 stars if it were possible. The worst Chinese, no, the worst food we've ever had. Completely inedible beef, grey mush that was supposed to be duck, and the wrong sauce with one dish. All topped off by a rude and obnoxious manager who hung the phone up on me.

We have used this takeaway for many years, and only recently have encountered issues.We placed a small order, which arrived an hour later (after being told it would be 30 mins max) the sauces were missing, as was a portion of rice. Rang to complain to be told it would be a further 30 minute wait. At this point asked for a refund. We received a part refund as we had eaten the chips that had arrived.Unfortunately due to how they dealt with their mistake, I would not use this takeaway again.

hello id like to remain anonymous about my name but il say Im male 23 and have eaten out this places many times over the years nothing regular or anything but quit a few ... mostly its ok to good nothing special atall! but a couple of months ago I ordered a special dish salt and pepper crispy chicken sound familiar? well this turned up and I had what looked like a hair clip wedged in the middle of it due to colour of the meal I nearly missed it I then found out it was a 2 -3 inch long piece of thick wire which I would of surely chocked and maybe something serious could of happened when we rang and went down to complain the old Chinese owner/chef jus told us to get lost saying it never came and were full of rubbish we didn't even want a refund jus to let them know!!! that's just 1 time to mention so if you want to be healthy yano not to get ill regularly or possible head to a&e then I suggest do not eat out this hideous place it might just be your last meal .

The food I must say has always been good, when you get it! I write my review on the delivery, I had experienced in the past a few LONG delivery times, but tonight passed extreme. Ok its a Saturday night so I phone at 5.30p.m. and I am told food delivered within the hour, ok so I make that food delivered by 6.30 p.m??? 6.45 pm still no food, so I ring and ring and get told its on its way and will be delivered any min, ok live 5 min drive from take-a-way, yes ok I understand they have other deliveries, but 7.30 P.M still no food, and ring again, just as there is a knock on the door! sent him packing as the attitude stank, I mean 2 hours for a take-a-way! I would like to say the delivery was a one off, but am afraid it isn't, it has happened before, if it wasn't for the fact the food is good I wouldn't bother, and why bother with the delivery, cos its a Saturday night, and like most you work hard and want a drink at the end of the week along with a treat, so if you want your Saturday night treat to be an Upton take a way, GO FOR IT YOUR SELF, or don't bother!

Got a delivery while staying at a friend's. Ordered quite a bit and turned up on time (even if the car was full to the brim with kids!) Hot tasty and would defo use again. All the people moaning about this place need a slap. The food was excellent and totally enjoyed it. Good work keep it up :-)

Used to be my favourite chinese takeaway in torquay, but recently has gone downhill fast. The food just isnt very nice anymore.

The food was tasty, inexpensive and plentiful. The staff were very cheerful and accommodating

had crispy duck pancakes wouldnt roll they broke , duck was like chewing an old boot , plum sauce was just a dollop from the fridge still cold , prawn and pineapple tastless , just steamed prawns added to pineapple and over cooked white rice , phoned and complained was just told i have been here twenty years and wouldnt take any notice of what i said dogmatic and unprofessional !!!!

I agree the prices are slightly higher but this is offset by the large portions and as for the food in my opinion is as good as other Chinese.Even though my preference is Indian we use the Upton because it is near to us and keeps the wife happy. On 6/12/2011 I had spare ribs in spicy sauce ( £5.60 enough for two) king prawn curry with rice ( £6.25) my wife had chow sam sien ( £5.25) two pancake rolls ( £1.05 each absolutely gorgeous )There was plenty left over for a extra meal which makes the prices reasonable.As I like curry hot and spicy the chef always makes mine hotter.Would recommend this takeaway to anyone.If you are not near enough their delivery service is excellentJohn and Sue Torquay

Upton Cantonese provides both delivery and collection options. The delivery is always as per their estimate of delivery times and I can't fault this. The food is always hot and packaging is satisfactory. The food has always been of average quality, I've eaten a lot better takeaways, likewise I've eaten a lot worse takeaways! I can't sing and dance about the quality as too be honest it's not five standard, nonetheless, if you just want to be fed with hot and relatively tasty food this is the place! I generally get four dishes, this feeds two people and your not left feeling hungry. The price I pay generally is about £25 obviously this will vary depending on what you buy! My personal opinion is that for the price you don't quite get the standard you'd expect, don't let this put you off as the food is perfectly enjoyable, I just think there is lots of room for improvement, especially at the prices they charge! On the whole I'd recommend this place, I keep going back but do question the prices they charge!
