Our second lunch before the end of pier show matinee & once again it was great. Most of the tables have a sea view. The service was attentive & both our starters & mains were great With some wine, one dessert & coffees the bill came to around £100 which these days is good value. Better value & better quality cooking than the White Horse at Brancaster Staithe. Allow a couple of hours for lunch and it sets you up well for the 2:30 matinee performance on the pier.

We were really looking forward to our take away fish and chips from here tonight and we can honestly say it's the worst we've ever eaten! £24 for 2 haddock and chips that ended up in the bin is an expensive mistake. The haddock had a strange flavour with a limp but oily batter. The chips also limp. On the plus side it was a big portion and the staff nice.

28th August 2024 2 Adults, no booking, late afternoon, we were made very welcome by the young staff, who found us a lovely table with a beautiful view. We chose the seafood platter, £80 for 2, but it was our wedding anniversary so we wanted a special meal. OMG it was amazing, beautifully displayed on a platter & you could taste the freshness of the fish. We ate everything! I'd absolutely recommend this restaurant, clean, with friendly staff & excellent food. If we lived locally we'd definitely frequent this place.

Visited many times over the years, used to be the best Fish & Chips! Not anymore, gone down hill. Won’t be going back again. Stop trying to be an up market restaurant and get the basics right, stick to Fish & Chips, such a shame.

Good position on the sea front with views of the pier and the beach. Staff very nice, pleasant and helpful. We chose the sea food platter for two and were than told that there was only a half lobster left but it could be augmented by the addition of half portion of scallops, this we chose. the platter was lovely but I think a little over priced. Allin all a good meal with good service. Will be attending again when in Cromer.

We were so impressed we went twice. The view is to die for, the Gaston’s No 1 beer was probably the best I had any where in Comer all week, and the food was simply superb. The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Tartare starter was absolutely magnificent, and I want the recipe! The standard of service was exemplary and Becky, in particular, excelled in her standard of customer service. The prices are entirely justifiable when measured against all the very positive attributes which Upstairs @ No 1 has to offer. A very pleasant and rewarding dining experience.

We were recommended to go this restaurant for their fish an chips. What a disappointment! The fish were small, totally over cooked and dried out to the point of being barely edible. The chips were average. All for the price of £21 for 2 portions. I can’t believe food of this standard would be served in the restaurant but perhaps they feel, with takeaways, when the food is presented in a closed box, they can get away with it!

Were warned as we sat down that the food would take some time to arrive. It was a long wait too!Floor under the table very messy with food debris. All looked excellent, but the chips were barely warm. Staff offered to replace chips and appropriate action was taken. The fish was beautifully cooked and delicious. All the food choices were very good and but for the chips the meal would have been excellent.Staff friendly, polite and helpful. But the place did look rather tired and grubby. Floor a bit slippy.Covid staff problems?

The best fish avd chips in Cromer by far. We did have to wait an hour to be seated but it was well worth the wait. We both had the fish and chips and they were fantastic, a lovejoy pot of tea washed them down nicely. We also asked for a bread roll to come straight to the table as my partner is diabetic and due to the wait he needed something to eat and the waitress was lovely, she was really controlling the restaurant, I don't know her name, however, she was dressed in black. All of our servers were great too. They were cleaning down every table after the customers had left, this included seats and all. You were asked to sanitise as you entered too. Overall a great experience, well done all!!

Went for late lunch and shared haddock and chips and battered cockles. Haddock was nicely cooked although chips were sparse and seemed to be all leftover end bits. Battered cockles was a large portion and tasty.Servers all very sweet despite being obviously inexperienced.Wouldn’t rate this above any other reasonable fish/chip shop but it’s fine.

Couldn’t comment on the food. However, waiting to be seated the staff did not acknowledge us at all. We understand in this climate that tables need to be disinfected in between being seated and they may have had limited staff but we patiently waited and would’ve been very understanding if a member of staff had even acknowledged us. Always go here and have to say its usually very good, last week there was a small stone in my chips, but gave them the benefit of the doubt having worked in hospitality for 20+years stuff happens, but yesterday evening we decided to go upstairs, we were sat at a dirty table, under the table a drink had been spilt and there were crayons all in it so we mentioned it and were moved whilst it was cleaned, perfect, but then the fish and chips came out, the fish was overcooked but they were busy busy so forgiven but my partner then said I don't know what's up with the vinegar?? It wasn't malt vinegar so I said it might be pickled onion vinegar so I smelt it put some on the back of my hand and tasted it, no flavour, looking round the vinegar bottles had obviously just been filled all at the same level, all the same colour, it tasted like water and I believe that's what the bottles had been topped up with, not great. Not good form. Clearly they were having a bad day, having said that the staff were lovely as always.

This place has a great reputation so it's not surprising that we had to queue for 20-25 minutes to enter the restaurant on a Sunday lunchtime. Once in we were led to a spotlessly clean table with a view over the north sea. We ordered haddock and scampi with chips and beer and cider. The fish and chips were PERFECTLY crisp with no hint of sogginess - well worth queueing for. The service was friendly and efficient. The family left feeling pleasantly replete. My only gripe was that a 250ml glass of red wine would have cost £9. Everything else was reasonably priced.

No 1 Cromer Fish and Chips. This restaurant has a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the sea / Cromer Pier. The restaurant does both dine in and take away service. Because of the excellent food quality both restaurant and take away get very busy, I was talking to a local who always uses No 1 and he said some times the queue is right down the road, but don't let this put you off, believe me, any short wait is worth while as the quality of fish and chips is second to none, and at an extremely good price. My wife and I had a take away Cod and Chops, and Haddock and chips, both meals were well cooked and full of flavour. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals, I am very particular about fish and chips and I can honestly say these were the best I have tasted in a long time. Well done all at No 1 Cromer, and if I lived local or even nearer, I would be there a number of times a week, but a 160 mile (each way) drive is a bit far.

We visited on the last day before the second lockdown, and waited for an hour in an orderly queue to dine in the restaurant. It was worth the wait. The restaurant was well managed with lots of space between tables. Some tables were free, but staff were not pressured into filling these even with a long queue of customers waiting. Hand gel on arrival, and T&T details taken. Cod and chips and haddock and chips were perfectly cooked and delicious. The takeaway was also busy, and I suspect they will continue to be during lockdown. Well worth a visit.

Really nice food let down by service. We ate Upstairs at around 7.30 in the evening. Upon arrival we walked to the top of the stairs where we found another party at the top of the stairs waiting for a table. We were asked by the restaurant host if we could go back down to the bottom of the stairs so only one party waited at the interior restaurant door which we were fine with, as she said she would come and get us when it was our turn. After around ten minutes ( not long) I wandered back upstairs and found the prior party had long gone, ( the last 5 minutes I heard their chatter disappear), so I then had to look for someone to admit us into the restaurant which they did straight away as there was good availability. After scanning our new nhs app to scan in our contact details we were shown to our table meanwhile being asked to record our details again on their form. From that point there was no warm welcoming friendly service evident, it might have been coming to the end of a long day but there was no attempt to engender any warm feelings towards the customers. We were chastised for not having written our menu choices on their piece of paper to hand to her, ( though I don’t understand why they couldn’t write the order down themselves?), so we were then left to write out our order to re attempt to place our order at a second attempt when she came back. I understand masks make things more difficult but normal customer courtesy would go a long way to help in what is a challenging time for everyone. Fish and chips were excellent, best lightest batter we’ve had, but the overall experience was let down by the ‘officious’ customer handling. Lighten up!

Visited this restaurant today following an excellent recommendation, only to be deeply disappointed by the experience.Waited outside for over a quarter of an hour, during which I asked a staff member on her way into the restaurant with ice cream if I was waiting in the correct place, which she confirmed. After a further ten minutes wait, during which two other potential diners behind me and my wife gave up and went elsewhere to eat, ventured warily upstairs to find the same staff member apparently oblivious to the fact that she could have come straight back down from the half empty restaurant to call us forward. No apology, and somewhat curt instructions followed, and that set the scene for the meal!Menu dumped in front of us with the meal I had in mind deleted, and command given to fill out form for track & trace and menu choice - I'm not complaining about what was done, but the way it was done. No explanation or apology given for missing items on menu, or that there was a specials board from which we could have chosen. Service was snail speed in every respect and I was only prevented from walking out by wife's desire not to have to look for somewhere else to eat! Some members of staff in this restaurant seem to have no idea whatsoever what good service or common courtesy entails, and no-one asked us whether we had enjoyed our meal. My wine was served in a glass which was not as clean as it should have been but, given the length of time it had taken to obtain it, I didn't have the inclination to put myself through more frustration waiting for a replacement. The restaurant was probably less than half full for most of the time we were there, and I shudder to think what the standard of service would have been had it been full! Should we pass this way again, we will give this restaurant a miss.

You have take away, eat looking over sea beach side and then upstairs resturante. We decided yo return a few hours latter and iam glad we did. After an unnecessary wait outside we were shown to our seat after hand sanitiser - all seemed very good Covid-19 wise - food ordered and very polite staff. Most people coming to eat were asked to sanitise but we were alarmed that at least 2 people came up the stairs to use the toilets and were just let in to walk right through the restaurant with no sanitising, the elderly gentleman needing to use his hands on a number of surfaces to steady himself - surely this can’t be right?? They made a good attempt to clean tables and chairs between customers but the condiments weren’t being cleaned. Apart from that we felt safe, food good, view good and staff very helpful and polite. We have just returned from a large family holiday in this area, and one of the highlights was to be a visit to Number One. Although it was only 5pm, there was a 50 minute wait, and we had to be seated on two tables as there were 9 of us. The meals were very nice and the restaurant was a pleasant environment with helpful staff. The Covid arrangements were all in place and we felt comfortable and safe. However we were not given the full Eat Out to Help Out discount, only £40 was deducted from the bill. Unfortunately we did not realise until we had left the building. We think it may have been because we were on 2 tables but paid for all meals on one bill, then presumably only got the discount for one table? The chips where over round the corner, so we ended up paying more to eat out on the promenade with the numerous black rats, feeding from the bins. The chancellor has suggested we eat out on mondays, tuesdays and wednesdays and bribed us with money off, but it seems this didn't apply to us when we spent nearly £23 on three small meals. Myself and my partner ate here tonight 08/08/2020. Small queue outside with about a 20 minute wait, the system I have to say is managed very efficiently by a very pleasant and friendly young lady. Once in the restaurant we sanitised our hands and were shown to our table. Very good idea with the paper menu where you mark off yourself what you would like to order. Food was beautiful, fresh and so tasty, we had the cockle popcorn and the whitebait to start followed by haddock and chips and cod and chips......absolutely delicious, the batter on the fish is so light and crispy! This restaurant has got it so right in the current circumstances, well spaced tables, staff are extremely thorough in sanitising everything once a table is vacated including the backs and seats of the chairs, really nice calm feel about the place and that is down to the staff who are really smiley and cheerful (even though they have probably been rushed off their feet for 8 hours!) They just seemed to run everything seamlessly.?.....i hope management appreciate what an incredible, polite and professional team they have......an absolute credit to the restaurant We really had a lovely meal........thank you. Having visited a year ago and thoroughly enjoying both the food and atmosphere (excellent service too) we decided we must go back on our weeks stay in Cromer. Sadly we won’t be visiting again. Awful service despite being almost empty (and having to queue outside for about 20 minutes) only 2 staff serving. The food was also less than average with one meal being inedible due to how salty it was, which we sent back to the kitchen. We weren’t given cutlery and when asked for this still had to wait a number of minutes before it was brought over. The scampi was similar to that out of a packet from your local supermarket. Hugely disappointing all round.

Light and crunchy batter on the cod and chips which were great. Curry sauce was spicy and hot and the largest gherkin ever on the side. COVID secure and all tables cleaned down with social distancing. Would highly recommend for your fix of seaside fish and chips

We ate at Upstairs No1 Cromer at the end of July and had a very nice meal. They were very Covid secure with offering a write on menu to order. The food was big portions and tasted lovely. The kids meals came in a small bucket and spade, which was a nice touch. We decided to eat early (4.30/5pm), which was great as we missed the evening ‘rush’. We we came out of the restaurant there was a waiting queue; it appears you cannot book.Overall, a good meal with a wonderful view of the beach.

We visit here every time we visit Cromer. Fish and Chips still the best ever. Lockdown hard and queued for 30 mins to get in but worth it. Service was great and excellent vfm. Will definitely return.

I visited with my husband for dinner this evening. There was a short wait, but it wasn't busy upstairs. The fish and chips were first class, but the service was very average, poor choice of ice-cream and the bill was incorrect- not even corrected when we pointed out the mistake (too little discount taken off for the "eat out to help out") - a pity because it reflected poorly on the restaurant, and means we wouldn't visit again

We went the first week of summer holidays for a lunchtime family meal having seen queues on the previous days. There was no queue and the restaurant was not too busy. The service was pretty slow and only 2 staff servicing the floor. Food was ok but nothing special for the price and wish we had just got a takeout and eaten on the beach instead.

This restaurant overlooking the sea is painted in restful minimalist style coloured blue, grey and white - not like any fish and chip shop eating place I have ever visited before. Besides the traditional fried food of fish, sausages and burgers, the crab salad offered a healthy option served with dressed salad, new potatoes and a bread roll.Attention to detail, because of Covid was exemplary. Tables were spread out, there was hand sanitiser everywhere and as guest left their table, seats of chairs and backs of chairs were sanitised. Guests had to tick off on a menu what they wan ted and even the pens were sanitised before the next use. This restaurant was reviewed in last Saturday’s The Times and deserves a very good rating - highly recommended!

Perfect crispy chips, haddock cooked to perfection. Lots of choice for other things, some of which were healthier options but we were there for the fish and chips! Good service thanks to friendly Quamay.

Had lunch here today, we had the most amazing food probably the best fish and chips we have eaten. The chocolate brownie and ice cream was amazing too. The staff were friendly, polite and made you feel very welcome. Also great views whilst enjoying a great meal. The place was very clean and had covid measures in place for a safe environment. We will definitely return on our next visit to cromer. All the staff are a credit to the restaurant.

Fish and Chips were nice, but service and attitude were poor....this is simply one of those eating establishments that believes charging more makes them better. Certainly not true in this case....For me it’s an expensive chippy with bad attitude.

I had the mini cod and chips which was just right. I don't know how they were cooked but they were the lightest most delicious fish and chips I have ever tasted. We had to queue whilst tables were being sanitised, but it was well worth waiting for.

My wife is a coeliac (allergic to wheat & all gluten) so if we have fish & chips she carefully removes all the batter before eating the fish. When we ordered at this restaurant, Quame, who took our order told us that my wife could have her plaice grilled in order to make it easier for her. We really enjoyed the battered and unbattered meals that we had. We were offered a window seat as soon as one became available so that we could enjoy the sea and pier view. Wonderful fish and chips and very personable service from the staff: Rosie, Emily and Quame. Many thanks

Popped in No 1 on Saturday 11th July. I’m a coeliac and not many places offer gluten free fish and chips so usually just have to enjoy the smell. Oh no..not on this occasion. To my delight they offer everything on the menu as a GF option. Ordered fish, chips and onion rings. My partner started to dive into the onion rings thinking they were his non gf sides and commented on how lovely they were...only to then find out they were mine (normally you can tell the difference between gf and non gf batter). The portions were huge, the view from upstairs in the restaurant was beautiful, the service was fantastic and prices were reasonable. Without a shadow of a doubt THE best fish and chips I’ve had (even since before I was diagnosed as coeliac). Dribbling at the thought of returning.

Seeking out a well-regarded local fish and chips meal i was recommended this place / plaice by a local shopkeeper and resident. I called to book to be told that it was just turn up and hopefully get a table. I needn’t have worried. I turned up at 3pm on a Wednesday and was warmly greeted and shown to a table within 5 minutes. After an easy registration for track and trace and selecting menu options there was a wait of about 10 mins and starters arrived. A generous portion of halloumi sticks and squid pieces with an excellent helping of sweet chilli sauce and a side salad. The appetite had already been whetted. The mains were of course fish and chips. What arrived did not disappoint. A generous fish portion hanging off the plate with a light and crispy batter and delicately seasoned - which was a great touch, accompanied with a plate full of crispy chips. Added on was an excellent and spicy curry sauce, hot and tasty mushy peas and a thick and creamy tartare sauce and a rich ketchup too. Some 30 minutes later i finally put my knife and fork together and savoured the tasty food i’d just managed to squeeze in. This restaurant lives upto it’s name as ‘No1’ the food and service is by far the best in Cromer. Cod and chips for 2 with peas, all the sauces and drinks was £46.00. Recommended.

I’m not one for writing reviews but we stopped off here whilst having a wander round Cromer with the family and wanted to praise this little place for its food. Chose to eat inside upstairs and all the correct measures were in place for COVID 19 including asking all guests to sanitise their hands at the station on arrival and we felt very safe and at ease. Service was fantastic too, would highly recommend!

As I travel alone, I choose very carefully where I eat. I visited Upstairs at No 1 Cromer for a lunch and it was a great experience and one I will be doing again within the next few weeks subject to Covid 19 of course. Could not fault anything, Food a real treat with plenty of choice. Staff, very friendly and welcoming, views so relaxing. Quality the best! Thank you to everyone and I will support you again, even if I have to queue as it is worth it.

We had been trawling through TripAdvisor looking for somewhere to have lunch the night before we visited No1. Without actually settling on anywhere we made the short journey from Sprowston manor to Cromer. After a lovely walk round this quaint little town we entered the doorway to the stairs leading up to the restaurant upstairs at No1, from the minute we walked in until we left the service was attentive but not intrusive. Kwame is a fantastic front of house manager & host, guiding us through the small plates - we had 3 as starters. Let me tell you the popcorn cockles are an absolute revelation, we liberally dosed ours in the chefs special chilli vinegar - they are a must for any future skeptics. Alongside the cockles we had herring fillets with a pepper crust & the haddock scotch eggs, both also amazing. For our main dish both myself & fiance opted for the crab burgers - well you can't visit cromer & not sample the local crab!! These to were outstanding, however they are big portions, a classic case of eyes bigger than out bellys soon emerged & we both had to concede to defeat over halfway through! If you have the opportunity to visit upstairs @No1 I would suggest small plates for lunch & straight through to a main for an evening meal. We noticed a couple of other couples indulging in the sweets menu, that too looked fabulous, we only wish we had more time in Cromer to explore the menu further.

After a great lunch some months ago, decided to return for a pre Cromer Pier show dinner hoping that the standard we experienced before had been maintained. We were certainly not disappointed! A great welcome from the front of house manager, a lovely table overlooking the pier at night, a recommended wine which was very special so all we wanted now was great food. Disappointed we were not! I decided I go for mushy pea fritters with mint jelly, wow, something very different and yummy whilst my wife had smoked haddock scotch eggs which were equally amazing. Wonderful tastes with great presentation. We both had fish dishes for mains which were equally impressive. The very high standard has certainly been maintained and we look forward to our next visit. If you’re looking for a meal with that extra special ‘wow’ factor then please give this restaurant a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Had dinner here on our last visit to Cromer and it was a must for a return visit. We certainly weren't disappointed! Friendly welcome and service. As a non fish eater I opted for a starter of Korean style chicken wings, followed by belly pork from the "Bites" menu. The manager who took our order advised that was a very small portion and recommended a second dish from the "Bites" menu of chicken drumsticks one naan with raita. The chicken wings were massive and there were 4 of them in a delicious spicy Korean sauce and the Bites were excellent - a great recommendation, and i still has room for one of the best desserts i have ever had - lemon posset with coconut ice cream. My partner had duck pancakes starter followed by cod a chips. the duck superb and the fish and chips - an enormous portion - was deemed one of the best he had ever had. The only disappointment was Galton's real ale, which he declared undrinkable! and there was no other ale choice, only lagers However, this did not spoil our enjoyment of the evening and the very reasonable bill at the end of the meal was an added bonus! Would highly recommend for anyone who enjoys good food!

Booked a table for early evening prior to a trip to the lovely little theatre at the end of Cromer Pier. Food and service were exemplary. Had a fantastic crab burger with sea salted chips and a tasty relish followed by Crunchie dessert - all washed down with the in-house ale (brewed by local brewery Moongazer). Table overlooking the pier was an added bonus. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere but with top quality food. Will return!

Had a quick Valentine’s Day out at Cromer and decided to try No1, having been impressed with our visits to Morston Hall previously. Nice friendly restaurant space, sea view, which on a sunny day will be brilliant and the food was great, “fine dining” quality in an I fussy but lovely setting. And the service was prompt and friendly.I had scallops wrapped in pancetta on a pea purée, pan-fried skate wing (an absolute fave of mine and done to perfection) and then a lemon pannacotta. Really good and will return

A couple of years ago we enjoyed a meal at No. 1, so when we stayed overnight in Cromer, we returned - only to find that the quality has massively improved. We shared the scallop and the mussel starters, and I cannot remember eating better quality mussels. For mains we both had specials - stonebass with an aoli sauce and chorizo crumb, and skate. Magnificent quality fish, marvellously cooked - as were the vegetables. Excellent champagne at £42 a bottle went down very well, and we shared a deliciously decadent chocolate crunchie dessert to finish. I also have to praise the service. It was an absolute pleasure to chat with the staff about anything from the quality of the food, to cocktails, gin and South Africa. Overall one of our best ever experiences in a restaurant.

We visited Stevenson’s Fish Bar in Sheringham after hearing it was one of the top-rated places for chips in the area, and while it mostly lived up to its reputation, there were a few bumps in the experience. To start, the shop is quite small, which can make it feel cramped on busy days, especially when you’re waiting for an order. Though the staff behind the counter were friendly and welcoming, we did have an unusually long wait. Unfortunately, it turned out our order had been overlooked, so several people who arrived after us received their food first. It wasn’t until we flagged this up that they realized the mistake. A simple ticket system could make this process smoother and help avoid any future mix-ups. Once our chips arrived, they were served piping hot, which was a big plus. The chips were well-cooked, with a satisfying crunch on the outside and fluffiness inside. Portion sizes were just right—not too skimpy and not overwhelmingly large. Overall, Stevenson’s Fish Bar offers a good product with a warm, friendly atmosphere, but a bit of improvement on the ordering system could make the experience more enjoyable.

The Good - the fish and chips were lovely, when you eventually get them (see The Bad). The Bad - their food is made on order, so not like a conventional fish and chip shop where the food is pretty much already made and the service is fast. I was in the queue for probably 3 quarters of an hour (no exaggeration). As soon as you’re inside the shop, you’re asked what you want, which gives you a false sense of optimism. It just means your food is made on order though. Meanwhile, all the customers in front of you, once they start being served at the till, take about 10 minutes each. There is only one person serving and two people cooking. I understand why they’re doing this - it’s to increase their margin and avoid wastage. But all that comes at a cost to the customer who suffers awful service. Maybe think about having two people on service and see your reviews regularly scoring 5.
